- This week we're checking out the winner of our Patreon Christmas poll, "Trading Places". For years I had thought this was just an 80's comedy and it wasn't until the last year or so that I heard it called a Christmas movie! This turned out to be a fun one and we're both glad we've finally seen it now!

The short answer on the ending...
1. They are dealing in OJ. The price would be expected to go up if the weather had hurt the crop, but to remain the same or go down if it did not.
2. The brothers, having a false report, think the price is going to go up, so they start buying as much as they can. Their buying drives the price up to 146.
3. The hero's are shorting OJ. So they borrow shares(actually contracts) which they sell at $146. Then, when the report comes in and the price goes down, they buy the shares/contracts back at 56, and return them to whoever loaned them to them, pocketing the profit of $90 per share.
4. Meanwhile, the brothers, have bought shares up to $146 per, using margin (or credit), and at the end of the day they still have to pay for shares/contracts at 146, even though they can only sell them for 56.
34:10 - Louis and Billy Ray start buying after the price had dropped to 46, and it closed at 29.
in a short short way our hero's sold before they purchased - charging $1.42 to later buy at $0.46
To clarify on points 2 and 3, short selling: The Dukes have false information, but they don't know it. They're thinking "if we buy up as much FCOJ as we can now, then when the crop report comes out, we'll be able to sell at a high price." Meanwhile the heroes (who know the Dukes' information is bad) are saying "We promise to sell you some FCOJ at $1.42 at some point in the future. We don't have it yet, but we're confident we can sell at that price." The other brokers in the pit are thinking, "Well, the Dukes are buying up FCOJ, so they must know the price is going up. No matter how high it goes, if I buy from the heroes, I'll get my buy-in price locked in at $1.42 and make a huge profit."
What _actually_ happens is that the crop report shows the opposite. There _won't_ be a shortage of FCOJ due to the weather. Therefore the price _won't_ be going up. Now the brokers in the pit are all thinking, "Gee, now my buy-in price of $1.42 is looking pretty high. This price is going to go down fast. I'd better sell as soon as I can to minimize my losses." The heroes are thinking, "Sure, I'll buy some FCOJ back from you, no problem - the same FCOJ that I just sold you at $1.42." The heroes end the day with 0 shares of anything in hand, just profit. The Dukes end up with a ton of shares in FCOJ that they bought at much higher prices than the closing price.
That's basically what short selling is: a promise to sell something you haven't got yet, because you think you can buy it for less than that in the future in order to fulfill the contract.
Eddie Murphy is far more than just a comedian, he's also an Oscar nominated actor, writer, producer, director, singer, and philanthropist and has been in entertainment for 47 years.
Both Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy were heart throbs during the Golden Age of Cinema.
Bellamy had a special distinction of sometimes playing second romantic fiddle to Cary Grant. One of my favorite lines comes from "His Girl Friday", where Bellamy is the innocent fiance to Grant's ex-wife. At one point Bellamy leaves the building and Grant, wanting to keep track of him, sends someone out to do so. "What does he look like?" the tracker asks. "He looks like Ralph Bellamy", Grant shoots back.
Don Ameche was in one of my favorite movies, "Heaven Can Wait", about a man telling the Devil the story of his life in order to figure out where he'll end up now that he's passed on. (This "Heaven Can Wait" should not be confused with the later "Heaven Can Wait" with Warren Beatty. That one is a remake of a 1941 movie called "Here Comes Mr. Jordan"). If you have seen "Cocoon", Ameche played a role in that one. He was a gentleman and had a lot of resistance to using the language he had in this script, apologizing to Murphy, and limiting the number of takes while using that language.
The police sergeant who finds the drugs while taking inventory is played by Frank Oz. Oz is known as the puppetter and voice of Bert from Sesame Street, Miss Piggy, Fozzie the Bear, and Yoda. He has also directed some fine movies (my favorite being Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). He also played a prison guard who is in charge of inventory in The Blues Brothers, directed by the same director as Trading Places.

Most everything in the 80's was in my opinion way better than today. I really miss the fun, cool and crazy attitude that more people seem to have. So many people nowadays don't know how to have a good time anymore. So sad but so true.

The pawnbroker was Bo Diddley (Ellas McDaniel), and one of his numbers was playing in the background.
The club's servant whose Christmas bonus was $5, was played by Avon Long, a great Broadway dancer. One of his best performances was as Sportin' Life in Porgy and Bess.
The shorter and drunker of the two baggage handlers was Senator Al Franken.
In the scene at the dinner party, showing that Billy Ray is now becoming quite a success among the financial elite, the Duke brothers' biggest investor mentions that he's thinking about putting his money into wheat and asks "What do you think, Valentine?", and instantly every single guest stops talking, the background music goes silent, and the whole party freezes up so they can hear Billy Ray's miraculous prediction on wheat futures -- that's a reference to, and a parody of, a series of TV commercials for the brokerage firm E.F. Hutton that were popular at the time. Every commercial featured some affluent looking character saying in a public setting "Well, my broker is E.F. Hutton, and E.F. Hutton says ...", only for everything instantly to go silent so people could hear the broker's predictions.
The two older gentleman are extraordinary Actors from the 40s & 50s. Both in many movies with many top celebrities.

Best one-second laugh: Woman on subway wincing at Winthorp biting into a hairy salmon. I laugh every time.
One of the best films of the 80s saw it in the cinema in 1983 everyone was in stitches watching it. So many funny moments too many to mention. A great film to watch at Christmas time.

In 1980 The Hunt Brothers tried to corner the Silver market.
Although they were heavily fined, the Hunt family is still one of the richest in America.
They own the Kansas City Chiefs.

The police officer that is going through Dan Aykroyd's belongins (Lewis) is Frank Oz. The voice of Kermit the Frog and Yoda of Star Wars.

Dan Aykroyd wrote Ghostbusters. It was originally planned for John Belushi and later Eddie Murphy. John Belushi died and his part went to Bill Murray. Sylvester Stallone turned down Beverly Hills Cop and it was offered to Eddie Murphy. That movie would have had a completely different look and feel and we don't get the classic 80's comedy, Beverly Hills Cop.
Inside Joke: When they are in the restaurant and ask Valentine for stock advice and everyone stops in the restaurant to listen. That is a play on a famous E.F. Hutton commercial. It was a popular broker house that did commercials. 'When E.F. Hutton talks. People listen.'
And that pawn broker was the great bluesman Bo Diddley!

Every bit as much a Christmas movie as "Die Hard". A lead character even portrays Santa Claus. Heh.

Classic film. Since 1989 it has been aired (usually) on Christmas Eve on Italian TV - after mass. It's one of those unexpected modern Christmas traditions.
Eddie Murphy coming into his prime with this one, Beverly Hills Cop put him there. He could do almost no wrong for the rest of the 80's. He was up there with Sly and Arnold for the biggest actors of the decade.

Regarding your ‘insider trading’ question - at the time of the movie this wasn’t technically illegal, however when the Dodd- Frank act was passed (in 2010) addressing issues that led to the financial crisis, that legislation actually included what was called the ‘Eddie Murphy provision’ - making the type of trading depicted in the movie illegal.

Feels like more a New Years movie
This was Eddie Murphy's second movie (48 Hours [with Nick Nolte] was his first) and the success of those films made him a big movie star so he quit Saturday Night Live. You should watch / react to Eddie Murphy in "Coming to America" there is a connection to this movie (although NOT a sequel) that is pretty funny and will catch you by surprise about 3/4 of the way through. You will LOVE it as well as 48 Hours I recommend them both.
Don’t forget the tie in and the nice Easter Egg in “Coming to America” when Eddie is walking along the East River. Eddie gives the Duke Brothers the cash and they announce “Were Back”

Nice! I work in the Duke & Duke building. They've maintained the boardroom as it was in the film, actually, which I find pretty funny.

most people miss the part about how actually evil the Dukes are. They also screwed up Penelope's life and she is their grand Niece.
I am happy to hear that you both said it wasn't a Christmas movie. It is weird (to me) that people think movies are holiday-themed solely because the action takes place during a particular season. And now you have to watch Coming to America because it follows up on this in a fun way. Toni needs to see Beverly Hills Cop as well.
I worked in commodities in the 90's, that scene is absolutely how it was in the old open outcry system. I think it's all electronic now. You had to be good to be on the floor, it seems like chaos but it worked.

it’s such a great, tender movie.
Eddie’s character comes to take care of a sickly young mother and her daughter, becomes part of the family!!
Eddie Murphy should be doing way more movies like Mr. Church. The movie didn't do well in theaters. But Eddie Murphy gives a phenomenal performance as man who helps a woman and her daughter. He even helps the daughter when she has a daughter of her own. Eddie Murphy deserves way more credit for he abilities as an actor.
What’s funny is that I hadn’t heard Lethal Weapon or this referred to as “Christmas movies” until I mentioned it in comments in the Die Hard debate.
I didn’t agree due to content and asked why this and Lethal weren’t also considered “Christmas movies”?

The Street is Delancey Street in Center City Philadelphia. In my Opinion, it's the nicest street in the City.
I love this movie and quote it from time to time. "Is that your purse? That's a nice purse", "quart of blood technique.", "and she stepped.on the ball" among many others.

Great reaction like always, i love this movie. A fun-fact the cop in booking that finds the PCP on Louis was Frank Oz, the famous puppeteer and voice for Yoda and many other Muppets and characters like Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Animal, Grover and Cookie Monster. He plays a similar role in Blues Brothers. Keep up the good work.

"Insider trading" only applied to securities at the time of this movie. Duke & Duke were commodities brokers. Insider trading laws have been updated to include commodities in the years since this movie was released.

If ppl insist on diehard being a Xmas movie, this for sure is, it has Santa's, snow, it goes into New yrs, it revolves around Xmas, diehard just had a Xmas tree and an office lol

@@allenslayman4272while I don't care one way or the other. I think the big difference is weather or not you can say the Christmas spirit is shown at all in the movie. This movie actually spans from before Thanksgiving according to the people in the jail cell thru past New Year. At no time is there a sense of family, love, peace to your fellow man or any of the above. It's basically nature vs nurture movie followed by a get back your revenge ending. Die hard however could loosely be called a Christmas movie because the entire movie takes place Christmas eve or at least very close to Christmas during a Christmas party. And ultimately the goal of the movie is for the hero to go threw hell just so he can be with his wife and kids for Christmas. So you can see why they call it a Christmas movie.
Not knowing what was on your poll, the Christmas movie to react to is "Klaus" (2019). It is not only a beautifully animated movie, but well done all around. Needs tissues, but well worth it. Instant classic.

This is a classic, it really is only a Christmas movie in that it occurs at Christmas time, but it wouldn't really be classified as a Christmas movie.
To answer your questions on the orange juice trading at the end of the show. This type of trading is the most classic commodity or stock trading. Most of the time for commodities such as this case orange juice (which really isn't a trading item, oranges would be the commodity) would occur in a trading pit and people will yell back and forth trying to get a sale or buy. Once you have an agreed amount and price both parties would write down the 3 letter identifier of the opposing party and then it would go to the settlement desk and that is where the price is recorded and displayed on the big board.
In this situation, Winthorpe and Valentine sold a huge lot of orange juice which caused the price to start going down. They did not own the commodities at that point they were borrowing it from another firm that was not buying or selling that day. So they will have to buy it back and return the borrowed commodities to the original owner. This is a short sale. Then as the price falls from 142 to 29, they buy back those contracts at the lower price, this is the short sale cover. They are making a profit here of the difference between the 142 and the 29 price, $113 per contract. But each contrat is thousands of pounds of orange juice, so they are making millions of dollars in the trade while the Dukes lost all their money because they thought the price would skyrocket. So the lost millions in the trade and they had to pay up right away. Some people have made billions in this type of trade, if you ever get a chance to see the Big Short about the collapse of the housing market in 2008, this is a similar situation. Keep up the great reviews, love it.
Trading Places is loosely based on the Prince and the Pauper novel.
One of my favorite comedies..... Eddie was on fire about this time. If you haven't seen it then a natural next one by him is Beverly Hills Cop and then a more dramatic flick being 48 Hours which is a dramatic comedy with co-star Nick Nolte.

What murphy and dan aykroyd are doing is short selling. Selling high and then buying the positions once the price goes down. Same thing as buying and selling but in reverse order.
Another fun fact-Actor Don Ameche played one of The Three Musketeers :D’Artagnan! In the 1939 movie The Three Musketeer’s! Cheers
Though he played a callous antagonist here, in real life Don Ameche was a true gentleman through and through. Before filming his final scene at the stock exchange he actually gathered the entire cast and crew together for a very solemn moment, so he could apologize to them in advance for dropping that F-bomb.
Just about everyone who appeared in this film was, or shortly would become a star in their own right. This was one of my mother's favorite films. While the plot was funny it gives you a good idea of how short selling works.

This is a Christmas movie as much as Die Hard is a Christmas movie, in that they both take place at Christmastime.
The baggage handlers were played by Al Franken and Tom Davis who did skits as Franken and Davis on the original Saturday Night Live. Al Franken later served in the Senate.
Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy (the Dukes) were well known actors from the golden age of Hollywood.Ameche was regarded as one of the last real gentlemen of old Hollywood and he felt bad about using the N word. He repeatedly apologized to Murphy for using it and Murphy had to reassure him that it was ok. You can see Ameche in Cocoon (1985), directed by Ron Howard.
A great Christmas comedy that really is about Christmas is Scrooged (1988), starring Bill Murray.
If Die Hard is a Christmas movie, than this is a Christmas movie. Lol
Fun fact, Landis also directed The Blues Brothers, and Jake's prison number was almost exactly the same as Winthorp's.

The officer that goes thru Winthrop’s possessions and finds the drugs. Is the same actor as the officer that gives Jake his possessions back when he leaves prison in Blues Brothers.

@@crimsonknight7011 That officer is played by Frank Oz, the Muppet performer. He played Fozzie Bear and Bert, among many others. He also performed Yoda in the Star Wars films.

There are several great Eddie Murphy movies to check out. His first movie was 48 Hours. He was also had The Beverly Hills Cop movies, The Golden Child, Boomerang, Harlem Nights, Coming To America, Life, and The Nutty Professor 1&2.
Yeah, Trading Places is not a Christmas movie, if folks pay attention they would see the movie actually takes place over a month and a half, beginning is right before thanksgiving, winthrop goes crazy and teams up with valentine on and after christmas, and they get the crop report on new years eve. Also Yes, the "open outcry" days are somewhat over on the stock exchange, everything is electronic and it's faster, it still does happen on rare occasions. Still stressful af.
I saw this in the theaters when it came out. We wondered why everyone was dressed up for News Years too. We all thought it was strange. So no, it wasn't an 80s thing.

This director pulled off some great comedies. How they never did a sequel to this is beyond me!!!
They didn't see a better way for the story to continue. The sad truth is most writers in Hollywood don't have the creative imagination to write great stories. We see time and time again bad sequels to great movies. Sometimes it's better not to ruin a good thing.
I mean Coming to America is sorta a sequel because of a cameo
@@vincecommando7575 normally I would agree. But these 2 alone are great writers. The original writer and director is still alive, plus they have access to other great writers they have worked with.
@@philmullineaux5405 That's not always a guarantee for success. Again other great movies have been brought back for a sequel and those movies were awful. Lest we forget Dumb and Dumber To (2014).

I've heard that rules for the way trading operates on the floor of the stock exchange changed because of this film. You'd have tp look that u but I believe it. I've also heard that this was Dan Akroyd's & Eddie Murphy's first film together. Up until this film, Jamie Lee's had only been known for doing horror films, and the studio didn't really want her to be involved.....but Landis insisted.
Not a Chrismas Movie guys, which is why I can watch it tonight, ala Die Hard etc. Yep, cute salt n pepper shakers. 🙄 A movie with Toni is always a new experience no matter how many times you've seen it. lol Yeah, you guys hit the jackpot kids. Here is a movie suggestion Trapped in Paradise with Dana Carvey and Nicolas Cage and John Lovtiz which has a Christmas theme and it's a romantic comedy but yet with a twist .
Beeks was indeed the teacher in "the breakfast Club". You did call the dog... but you said attack, not get peed on. LOL. 😀 Fun fact: When Randolph Duke collapses to the floor, after the "brothers" lost everything, "Mortimer" says "F him", well the story is the actor of "Mortimer" was Catholic, and felt really uncomfortable saying the F word, so at the last, he agreed for ONE take, that you now see in the movie.

Please add "His Girl Friday" to your list of movies to watch. Made in 1940, it stars Cary Grant as a newspaper editor whose best reporter is also his ex-wife, who is engaged to a man played by Ralph Bellamy, who played Randolph Duke. "His Girl Friday" is arguably one of the best screwball comedies ever made.
An all-time classic for sure. The "Ralph Bellamy" joke in it is one of my very favorite lines/jokes from a movie.
