In the jail cell standing next to Eddie was a very young Giancarlo Esposito.
I always thought the white guy in the jail cell was a young Bill Pullman, but it's not, looks like him though
Along with Eddie and Giancarlo Esposito in the jail scene was also a young CLINT SMITH (wearing red bandana), Eddie's best friend from high school who was also with him on SNL, and in 48 HOURS, and he also plays Sweetwater, the 3rd barber in the barbershop scenes from Coming To America.
I grew up on this and had it on VHS 📼. A classic that never gets old.

The cop sitting behind the desk talking about angel dust is Frank Oz. He was the long time voice of Grover on the show Sesame Street, Ms. Piggy on The Muppet Show and Yoda in all of the Star Wars movies.
And Giancarlo Esposito was standing behind Murphy in the jail cell.
…and a terrific director (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Little Shop of Horrors, HouseSitter, Bowfinger).

The guy in the pawn shop was Bo Didley, a fantastic Bluesman guitarist.
Trading Places came out in 1983, and also Eddie's stand up comedy show Delirious also came out in 1983. Coming To America came out in 1988. The Duke Brothers have a cameo in the middle of the movie when Akeem and Lisa go out on their first dinner date.
So glad I got to grow up watching some of the best comedians.

Let’s not forget Senator Al Franken. The shorter of the two drunk train employees eating bananas with the gorilla, went on to become senator from Minnesota until he got forced out of office over some really weak sa allegations.
The train loading supervisor was played by Stephen Stucker- Johnny, the crazy air traffic control worker in the "Airplane" movies. It's weird seeing him being so serious in this movie.
Franken and Davis, they did comedy bits on SNL from time to time in the 70's. Franken became a senator later on.
Don't know why, but Beeks saying 'cloakroom' is hilarious.
Love this movie.. it's fun and perfect happy ending. I'm glad you remember the Duke's cameo in Coming to America.

This movie was supposed to star Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor. But just like the sheriff role Richard was supposed to play in "Blazing Saddles", he was cut out of the part that was written for him, due to his addiction behaviors causing him to be deemed too risky for the studio to hire.
So that's two planned Richard and Gene movie pairings that we all missed out on. Obviously, "Trading Places" was a great movie even without Richard and Gene. But it also would have been great WITH Richard and Gene staring. And in all likelihood (in my opinion), probably even better.

I liked your statement about how they 'could do that' back then, in reference to the cell phone. Yes, cell phones were conceptualized back in the 40's by AT&T, and in the 70's, was developed into a workable system by Motorola (the first call was to some guy at AT&T to let them know they were receiving the all via a cell phone....lol), that was around 1974 or 1975 I think, by the time this movie came out in '83, cell phone towers were built out enough that in the more populous areas, one could get cell phone service... analog, not digital, no digital anything back then, and it was about 50 cents per minute if I recall. (about $1 per minute in today's dollars. By the late 80s it had dropped to $0.35 cents a minute, and by the 90s, monthly (affordable) service where you received 'x' number of minutes per month, followed by 'unlimited' like we have today probably happened around 2000.

To you young'ns....Jamie Lee Curtis's 'special guests' is known as one of the most paused VHS moments in history. Mind you back in those days, you watched that on VCRs. No DVD's yet....so that pause button came in quite handy.
A cameo that predates you guys is the famous Bo Diddley as the Pawn Shop Owner. Also the balding cop is Frank Oz that says 'Opera' voiced many of Jim Henson's Muppets and Star Wars characters
The 'N-word' was not very acceptable even in those times, and Don Ameche wasn't comfortable at all using it. He also didn't care to curse either so he only allowed one take for the 'F* him'
Black Face was not a big deal. At least I don't remember it ever being an issue by any race. Of course Dan Aykroyd regrets it now that times have changed. However, back then it was just comedy.
Even when the movie was new, most of us had to settle with pay cable a year after release and before getting those VCRs.
The "blackface" was not perceived as that unless someone was actually doing it in the classic derogatory showbiz manner. People had more of an understanding of context (and they do now; they just know they can make a fuss and get attention and see timid people cower to it.) I'm sure there are some pseudo-intellectuals writing papers or editorials at the time who made some kind of rant about it.

Edit: You saw Coming to America and got the cameo. Trading Places was first. Eddie Murphy wrote the Dukes back in as a thank you and for fun. Trading Places was when Eddie Murphy was just starting his career.

The 80's decade gave us the best Hollywood comedy movies; the Legends of Hollywood comedy movies were: Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder, Steve Martin, and Eddie Murphy. I highly recommend the following movies you should watch:
1) SEE NO EVIL HEAR NO EVIL.
2) BOWFINGER.
3) FATHER OF THE BRIDE.
4) ROXANNE.
5) PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES.
6) BREWSTER's MILLIONS.

So many lessons in this funny film..I quit a decent big Corporate job because as much B.S. they talk about "Family and Frrendship" they are the most phony people in the world and will backstab you in a millisecond. Second, it's really like that with stockbrokers--Experts say only 10% will really work to make you any $$..The rest don't care. Winthorpe learned the best one--The ally/freind he found in Valentine was something he never got from his snooty-blue-blood pals.and he got a more real love with Ophelia while..society gal was just a gold digging snobbette.

This movie helped transition Jamie Lee Curtis from just the girl-next-door screamer in "Halloween" to a "sxx symbol." She also sort of played that role over the next couple of years in "Grandview U.S.A." and "Perfect."

34:26 Winthorpe must really have touched Ophelia’s heart at this point. She is acting dang near like his wife. Ophelia is a real ride or die chick and much more loyal than Penelope.
Of course given her line of work and the time of year, Ophelia was probably feeling lonely as well. So she and Winthorpe saved one another.
Actually for the snobs she dwelled among Penelope was pretty loyal. She went herself to jail to bail Winthorpe out but when he got kissed on the steps of the building, by a hooker no less, made her too scorned. She felt betrayed by the man she just rescued. Yes her reaction in the club about the drugs was petty but all in all...Ophelia has a warm and caring heart even in her tough upbringing, but who knows how she became if she was raised rich in that elitist little world?
Coleman the Butler was played by Denholm Elliot. He also played Marcus Brody in the Indiana Jones movies. If they remade this movie today the "blackface" scene on the train would have to be written out or changed. Maybe Winthorp could be dressed as Santa Claus (hopefully with a clean beard and costume).
So ridiculous. I don't recall anybody from any race getting offended at such stuff in the 80's. I'm not sure if that makes it right or wrong. However, comedy was just that. No rules other than trying to make people laugh.

@@lexiburrows8127 those were the days. I didn't grow up around today's racism. I feel like my generation, and the time I grew up in cared about one thing. Are you entertaining? Can you sing, dance, act, bring something different to the table.....and if that something different was cultural, even better. Nowadays the arts and entertainment and almost all the rest of society puts skin color and sexuality at the forefront. It's being shoved down everyone's throat to the point where entertainers are instantly unlikable. They act like they're here to save the country....it's like 'none of you are groundbreaking'....we had this all already.

6. GOOF: Where did Louis get the gun AND all those drugs for only $50?🤑Even in 1983.
7. Don Ameche's strong religious convictions made him uncomfortable with swearing. This proved to be a problem for the scene at the end of the movie, where he had to shout out "Fuck him!" to a group of Wall Street executives. When he did act out the scene, it had to be done in one take, because Ameche refused to do a second one. He also had an issue with the N word.
8. There's an Easter egg in "Coming to America" with the Duke brothers. Eddie Murphy at his best.
