      To be exact its the hunter (you) coming to meet the original hunter (gherman) who was your guide to this point. Its a dream void that you are stuck in and the only way to get out is to let him kill you, he also wants to die but does not want to force you to kill him, while if you kill him you take his position until the next hunter comes

    "Beware the old man in a profession where usually men die young" fits Gehrman the First Hunter perfectly. Also a common theme in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring is that long-lasting happy outcomes are never heard of. Bittersweet victories at a great cost of life and sanity are much more commonplace. Gehrman's fate is no exception.

    This plays for the final boss, and its a very tragic song.
    Basically, the boss you fight is a pseudo-mentor to you cursed with eternally serving this eldrich God, and you are finally putting him to rest.
    Think of the song as a dirge, as you are finally putting this tormented soul to rest.
    It's someone that you are supposed to feel hesitant to kill, but the more hopeful notes of the piece sort of symbolize the bosses desire to rest.
    The arena is a beautiful field of white flowers, in this dreamlike space. Literally, since it IS called the hunters dream.
    When you mentioned it sounds like a dream, or a death, there ya go. It's both.
    Of all the souls games, I love bloodborne's soundtrack the most. There is SOO much meaning in every piece, every note is deliberate. And it has this haunting cosmic horror vibe games have struggled to recreate sense.
    While there's debate over which souls game is the best, most would probably agree that the "vibes" of bloodborne are the most enrapturing.
    Finally, I've mentioned this before, but I think you would really REALLY like the souls games. It has a heavy focus on gameplay, so there is a decent overlap with fighting game fans.

    • @darkpyro786

      Cosmic horror is definitely something I feel mainstream media hasn't been able to convey properly, at least from the things I've seen/played. Until I played this game. It's really easy to see why there are people who aren't even full soulsborne fans but consider this game as one of their favorites of all time. You just don't get that same experience anywhere else. Closest thing we got in Elden Ring was Astel, but I still desperately need Bloodborne 2 or a spiritual successor ugh

    "What was it," you ask me? It was neither the Hunt, nor the Blood, nor the Dream. It was the insight... the insight that you've sacrificed yourself and suffered for so very, very long for the sake of everyone else... But I can take it, Old Hunter. I am still young compared to you. My heart and mind are unburdened compared to yours. And when the time comes and I, too, am driven to despair by this horrible, wonderful dream, I will look for a successor to take my place... But for now, I know we must dance. Because I know that even though you long for release, and even though I am willing to sacrifice myself for your sake, you cannot allow me to take your place and suffer your torment... So come, Old Hunter. I invite you to dance this last waltz with me... and then, sleep... sleep, unburdened by dreams and nightmares... free of torments, free of sins, free of suffering, free of cretins, free of sorrows, and free of tomorrows, free like the sparrows, leaving their shadows...

Gehrman, the first hunter and last/second to last boss depending on ending is a man who has been there for the entire game, and at the end offers you a choice: wake up and forget everything that has happened on the night of the hunt and move on with your life leaving him where he is, or live eternally within the dream turned nightmare he is stuck in, freeing him in the process.

    I am very new to Fromsoft gsmes. Started with Elden Ring, and now just recently finished Bloodborne.
    As a string player I have made a habit of listening to scores and as such I listened to this before completing the story. This theme can go over your head because of how subdued it is in comparison to the rest of the boss themes. Very pared down to mostly string section that will reach its climax to that choral section that gave that extra emotional kick to it. Now once you get to this penultimate final decison in game and go back to this theme afterwards, it will hit different.
    From what I have gathered of Soulsborne games, endgame bosses often has this theme of fighting warriors who are mere shadows of their former selves, who are way past their prime, and Gehrman is a great example of this. The theme really gives that gravitas to the end of his, and your journey.

    It's because the lore, the narrative and the whole world building of fromsoft games are so elaborated and well taken care of, that you can feel, and almost kind of grasp the stories through the music itself, the music is that unseen narrator that fromsoft implements in their games, because the story telling method they use, is FAR from straight forward, every piece is important, from the details in the level design, the environments, the SUPER INFRECUENT cutscenes, the item descriptions in your inventory, and of course; the music/boss themes, I know it's highly unlikely, but I do hope that sometime in the future, you could give this game, at least this one, a fair try, it's also not THAT long, like a JRPG could be for example, so hopefully that helps you making the decision, thank you very much for the reaction Jesse ❤️

    Then you come to the dream, like many who have before. But unlike others, who willingly die in the dream to wake up in the waking world, you refuse that offer, wanting to remain in the dream
    Then Gherman, the first hunter, takes it upon himself to free you from the dream and the madness he believes you've just displayed, as no man or woman would ever willingly subject themselves to such a fate. Only a mad beast, like so many that already infest the dream

    I'm a little familiar with some Bloodborne, I've always appreciated the songs like classic pieces more than something I'd put on for fun.
    A lot of pain in the strings and it gets more potent with the addition of more instruments, it almost sounds like the character doesn't want to do this but has to. The bass gives some darkness to the piece reminding you it's not just sadness and tragedy. I like the fake buildup and the choirs are standard but never unwelcome. Not a lot of things I can say about this but I do like it, this type of music I much prefer listening to with a live orchestra in person. I'm sure that this song has some interesting music theory stuff going on that's going straight over my head.

  • @Mr-Draco
    @Mr-Draco Рік тому +2

    The music in the FromSoftware games is indeed an important part to set the vibe and atmosphere. The boss music also emphasises the lore and character of the bosses. There is usually no overworld music in the games, besides subtle ones in Elden Ring and Sekiro, what makes the boss music even more special in Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 and Bloodborne. I assume it's to make the worlds feel even more dark and decrepit, until the action comes back in with the bosses or music plays in some special places.
    The community around these games is truly dedicated, that's something to keep in mind when the games are played and footage is shared. But I would still highly recommend to give these games a try. It takes some time before they click to new players, but when they do it's just an amazing feeling of accomplishment.
    Great work with the video too, the analyses of the music definitely hits the point. It is a boss theme indeed and the emotions behind it you described certainly suit this one.

  • @Mrinsecure
    @Mrinsecure Рік тому +3

    When you describe the song as sounding dream-like, that's very much apropos. The central hub of the game is called the Hunter's Dream, a sort of alternate realm that is constructed within the dreams of those who pledge themselves to the Hunt (like the PC). Indeed, much of the game takes place in a sort of dreamlike state, where the Hunter is clearly seeing things that others cannot, and as you go through the game, more and more things that were hidden from you become visible, increasing the sense of unreality.
    This song embodies the intrinsic tragedy of the Hunter's Dream, as well as its keeper, Gehrman. It is a safe haven, but only so long as you fling yourself out into the waking world to die a thousand miserable deaths. It is a place where you can increase your power, but only by feeding on the blood of countless others who came before you. And ultimately, it is a place you must forget when you finally awaken... for if you choose not to wake up, you may stop being the Hunter and become the Hunted.

So this music piece plays when you are at the end game and you face your "Guide and Mentor" and your faced with a choice: either you surrender to him and wake up from the dream(vague, I know), or you don´t and Gehrman, The First Hunter, founder of hunters no less, that will make you submit by force. By doing so, you will battle a harden veteran who is very fast, very agile and very deadly in a Moon Lighted flower field while listenning to this amazing muisic piece. And he will do it, he will defeat you as a maning of mercy so you won´t have to suffer his fate. It is beautiful and tragic at the same time, one of the more reasons why I, and many others, love this game so much.

    Also do check out Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring sometime!
    Soul of Cinder, Abyss Watchers, Iudex Gundyr, Vordt, Dancer of the Boreal Valley... Elden Beast, Margit the Fell Omen, Godskin Apostles. There are SO many great tracks!

    Gehrman is the keeper of the hunters' dream and also your mentor throughput your journey, when you reach the end and complete your objective and become in his eyes "too strong for your own good" he offers what he sees as "mercy" which is to release you from the dream which in reality is another nightmare, even though he wants that to himself to a point he starts weeping in his sleep, yet he still fights you to stay behind for your own sake

    The part you mentioned about orchestral ambiance struck me because you mentioned you're often lacking the full context to really understand those songs when they are suggested to you.
    A noteworthy thing about the Soulsborne games is that they all feature a cryptic form of storytelling where you need to puzzle the events together by - among a bunch of other things - pieces of dialogue, the environmental design, item descriptions and the music as well.
    It's easy to miss the context in Soulsborne games and in fact a decent portion of the players do miss it (perhabs even the majority), which is why the games rely on really thick atmosphere or conveying the story of a boss through the music moreso than what might be typical of other games so that even players who missed the context still understand that something of significance is going on here.
    It uses the environment, atmosphere and music to give the players a sense of "This sounds really sad. Why is it sounding so sad? Why is the game telling me that me fighting this guy is tragic? There's something more to this." And then the player goes digging in the game and realises there is a whole story to this guy they fought when they put all the pieces together and it all suddenly clicks.

    5:23 to me , this part always sounded like the part in movies where the villain reveals he was good this whole time trying to protect the main characters, and now the villain sacrifices himself to save the MC while the MC also wants to save the villain. only in bloodborne whoever wins, loses.

  • @LillyTensei

    So this is one of the three possible final bosses in Bloodborne. (the true requires you to eat 3 of a specific item and fight this character, the normal requires this fight, and the early you say yes to this character, and don't fight him.)
    The reason it's called The First Hunter, is extremely literal. He is *the* first hunter, and he appears a lot in the game. It's tone as a theme is so melancholy because neither you nor him actually want to fight each other. He wants to set you free from the curse, and you want to set him free. Each only possible by killing the other and waking them from this endless nightmare.

    • @LillyTensei
      @LillyTensei Рік тому

      I will note that for me personally, he's one of the easiest bosses in the entire game lol. I use a set based on another character named Lady Maria, and I don't think I've ever lost to the First Hunter, in the 8 playthroughs of BB I've done, but for a *lot* of players, he's considered extremely difficult. He's fast, moves around a lot, has all the options you do as a player, and has a ton of AoE attacks. So you're hearing this music while this man with a scythe is aggressively hunting you down to literally cut your head off. It's a frantic fight full of emotion and more like a dance than probably any other boss besides maybe Lady Maria and the Orphan from the dlc.

    Curious thing, they just got a massive success with Elden Ring, but previous to that, Souls games were not that "famous". Even with the success of Elden Ring, they are still rather small Devs in comparison with titans like Ubisoft or Bathesda, but new people are exploring previous Soulsborne games thanks to Elden Ring 🔥 Miyazaki said that they don't want to be only associated to just that, and they enjoy doing what they like, so this is a great moment for them to soon release Armored Core 6 (they know it won't be a commercial hit, but they are in a safe position to take some risks).
    Also, their composers are in-house too! And they have a band called FreQuency

    I’m in love with Bloodborne’s music. Dark Souls 3 has some bangers too apparently, but the only one I’ve heard was Slave Knight Gael, which was absolutely incredible. Definitely recommend giving that one a look.
    But for Bloodborne? Oh man. Lady Maria is a certified banger on the level of Ludwig, Laurence is nearly as good, Living Failures is great and The One Reborn is an underrated gem. Can’t go wrong with any of those four.
    Side note: I hate that people have made it so Souls games are only known for being the “difficult, gatekeeped” games. They offer so much more than hard bosses. I play for their grand music, atmosphere, and unmatched design. It’s beyond any other gaming series ever created.
    And you’re right that basically every Souls game is loved. Some of the earlier ones are considered less polished, but you’ll find a very vocal fanbase saying each game is the best. I’d say the most popular ones are Elden Ring (as it got so many new fans into the series) and Bloodborne (among people who actually got to play it since it’s a PS Exclusive to this day). But Sekiro, DS1 and DS3 have many, many diehard fans who will argue their game is the best, and even a few would argue for DS2 or DeS. They’re all pretty much 9/10 games.

    The final section of Magna Insomnia from Final Fantasy XV has a similar feel of percussion-less menacing choir.

    Bloodborne exists in a world where people stooped to immoral lows through the use of blood medicine that ended up corrupting many and turning them into beasts. The things you fight seem to menacing and evil, until you realize most of them are victims of the affliction from the world around you. You play a hunter tasked with ending the nightmare, and bringing on a new day in Yahrnam (both literally and figuratively).
    Gehrman is a tragic character because he guides all hunters on their journeys, most of whom either die, give up, or become beasts themselves. At the end of your journey, he offers you mercy by killing you and waking you up from the nightmare. You only fight him if you refuse his offer…
    He basically says that you (player character) would have to be mad to want to continue to exist in a world as awful and grotesque as the one you’re in. The fight is essentially, two hunters fighting to save each other, and neither wanting to do so.
    What’s worse is that, depending on the ending you get, after killing him, you end up taking his place

    TBH, a lot of Soulsborne music kinda just blends together in this sort of... orchestral blob that can become hard to tell apart, especially after DS2, but there are a few big stand outs, and this is definitely one of them. One of the most beautiful boss themes Fromsoft has put in a game, and it's even more beautiful in context. It's this amazing back and forth, like a waltz to the death in a beautiful flower field and its sad and melancholy but also sick AF... Man... Vidya games.
