Toby Fox created the entire game, visuals, story and the soundtrack. For a single person creating this game, not only was it praised highly for being one of the best games of the year by many people who played but also he created some of the most instantly recognizable soundtracks to come out of games when it was released. With most of his tracks you only need a couple notes and you know in a moment what it is. I love the game, but 100% one of the best soundtracks to be made. *From one guy*
This isnt entirely accurate. He did have some help from some people. A few enemy designs were made by other people as an example. Its more accurate to say its 90% toby.
Megalovania may be the most unbreakable song in existence. People have swapped the positions of beats, reversed it's beat order, reversed it's harmony, and even removed every second beat. And yet it is still always good. Highly recommend you checking out other tracks from the game, such as spear of justice and bonetrusle.
I'd totally recommend looking up Sans' fight to see the difficult gameplay that accompanies this great song. As for context, it plays during the last fight of a route where you kill everyone you possibly can. The figure you see there is the most powerful being in the game, but he's normally too lazy to fight you. Its only when he sees himself as the last line of defense against the absolute monster you've become that he steps into action. He knows you have the power to manipulate time (saving and reloading, or starting a new game), so he makes himself as insurmountable an obstacle as he can, in hopes you'll get frustrated, restart, and choose a different path. Bonus fun fact: There's a decent case to be made this isnt even Sans' battle theme. There's an unused song in the files called "Song that would probably play if you fought Sans" that sounds nothing like Megalovania. As a result, its a common headcanon that Megalovania is actually the player's boss theme
@@Conner3326 Dude asked for context around this song and the guy in the video (sans), so I gave it. I'm not the type of person who responds with "You'll have to play the game to find out... :)" when asked a straight forward question. Doubly so when he explained he likes getting the context from his fans in the same video I'm responding to.
I always thought of it like undyne. Her song in pacifist and neutral is different to the one in genocide. That's his genocide theme. But IF he fought you in another route, then the unused song would play
Having heard Megalovania so often in my life, I tend to forget how amazing of a song it is. Seeing someone hear it with fresh ears was such a delightful gift, allowing me to hear it again for the first time too.
Folks have covered the bases here on plot stuff, but something interesting about Toby Fox is that he lacks much in the way of musical training. I believe he has said he didn't learn much in the way of music theory before he started making music. I am not even sure if he had instrument training during his youth. He learned purely by doing. Megalovania is one of his earlier compositions he made while Romhacking Earthbound. It got reused here for the final fight against Sans in the "No Mercy" route. (The fans call it the Genocide route but Toby Fox has indicated some frustration with that as he doesn't love associating that word with this game, it is found nowhere within Undertale or its files). In his followup to Undertale, Deltarune, his music skills have grown and his compositions continue to impress. Here are my recommendations from his work off the top of my head. Undertale: Heartache Bonetrousle Spear of Justice Metal Crusher Death by Glamour Another Medium Spider Dance & Dummy (variations on the same theme) Bergentruckung + ASGORE (first one is a brief intro to the latter, listen to together) Hopes and Dreams + Save the World + His Theme (all in a row, essentially the finale of the game) Battle Against a True Hero (also from No Mercy) Deltarune: The Legend Lancer Field of Hopes and Dreams Rude Buster The World Revolving Roulxs Kaard Chaos King Don't Forget Queen A CYBER'S WORLD? Hey Every ! + Spamton + Now's Your Chance (again, listen to these songs in a row for full character experience) Pandora Palace Attack of the Killer Queen Knock You Down BIG SHOT Until Next Time I am sure there are other worthwhile choices but that's what I am leaving here. Great reactions!
He has even made songs for Gamefreak, a whole soundtrack for a proyect which I have no idea what came of it, and the Battle Tower theme for Pokémon Sword and Shield.
It should be noted that this song stands out quite a bit from most in the game, when most battles/events occur in the game you get a chiptune style goofy/upbeat type of song, where as with megalovania and some other select songs in the game you get the rare song that is genuinely trying to impress a serious tone of a certain type upon the situation, in this case being a intense battle with someone who actually hates you and wants you dead.
Actually megalovania is the theme of the player and or sans. It's not exactly for sans. The song that might play when you fight sans is for sans. But since Sans is one of the last monsters left and is the judge He is an extremely dangerous foe to you because of his KR Effect. So megalovania can go for either Sans (genocide) Or the player (genocide)
@@legendarytronic7774 actually it was vriskas before sans or the players. The scene it was used in hs was also badass and destructive. Full of hatred and death tbh 💀
Something I've always repeated about Undertale is that it is the *one* game(if I could only choose one) I wish I could experience again for the first time. Context helps a ton, but the tracks from it are something special. Thank you for checking this out!
You know, I never had an answer to this question, despite playing tons and tons of games, but I think you're right. I realize too that Undertale changed me, kind of mellowed me out and made me more empathetic, which is stupid to admit since I was already like 30 when I played it.
You've opened a whole can of worms now, all the bossbattle tracks are fantastic, and the area themes are more calm and what you were expecting. If you don't care for spoilers you should look up the Sans bossfight and record your reaction and put it here, I'd love to see it
Megalovania is sort of Toby Fox's signature song, and some rendition of it can be found a number of works he made or collaborated on. So far, its been in the Earthbound Halloween Hack, Undertale, Homestuck, & Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
@@dirtydan7479 No, the track Toby composed for Pokemon is not another Megalovania. I believe it's based off another song he made for Homestuck specifically.
@@zukamimotu..2071 ohhh I read the comment incorrectly, I thought it was listing what he has worked on, I just know he worked on sword and shield 😅, that’s good to know tho, thanks!
I highly recommend listening to Hopes and Dreams + SAVE the World + His Theme, they only come as a package deal they represent the perfect conclusion to all the emotions you feel throughout the game.
God how did I miss you reacting to this?!? Megolovania has been like a solid gym tune for me, and the impact that Toby fox has on the musical sphere online has been massive; remixes from many many talented artists that were inspired by him and the game. It was a goddamned feast for me to be honest! djcutman, game chops, sharaX to name a few of my favourites. The tunes are too powerful 💀
One of the coolest things about the entire Undertale soundtrack is that a good number of the songs are actually really short, maybe 2-3 minutes, but they loop so well that it can be difficult to see when a song actually ends because it will loop back in on itself in such a great way.
it's a beautiful day outside. birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, musicians like you... Just opened the Undertale can of worms.
Megalovania is kinda Toby Fox's personal stamp of quality. It's been in nearly everything he's worked on or made music for- the Earthbound Halloween rom hack, Homestuck, and Undertale was its rise to fame. All of the versions sound different! I recommend giving them all a listen.
Was surprised when you heard the first notes and DIDN'T immediately go "ohh, this song". Was a huge meme a few years back to just put the first few notes at the start or end of some other meme or piece of content..as sort of a rick roll type of gag. Neat to see people appreciate the whole song though. Awesome.
Undertale is filled with awesome tracks and leitmotifs abound. Toby Fox is amazing. I actually first heard Megalovania in a prototype form as it was used in a special video for the webcomic MS Paint Adventures. I assume a comment has already mentioned how Undertale takes a lot of inspiration from the Mother series (aka Earthbound). Undertale is absolutely a game worth playing.
When I learned about basic music theory in school I heard about "repeating themes" but never really got the concept. Because I didn't know Megalovania. The way Toby Fox takes those first ten notes and shifts, stretches, condenses, layers and develops them is pure genius. I love this song and I'm pretty sure even my stuck up music teachers would have been impressed.
Thanks for checking this one out. As much of a meme as the song has become over the years, it's still absolutely phenomenal and highlights the variety/skill the developer had when putting together the game. The man is a musician first before anything, so it's almost a given every track related to games he's working on (Undertale and now Deltarune) is going to be special. Hopefully this won't be the last track you listen in on from the two games, but you picked one of the best.
It's an interesting experience seeing someone with no familiarity with Undertale react to the OST, because within gaming and meme culture, this song was everywhere for a good number of years, and even resulted in this song being added into Super Smash Bros Ultimate along with a skin of Sans- he is the skeleton guy and this is the theme for his Boss fight in Undertale.
The song, for me, really captures the whole mood and context of this boss fight. Right at the start, you get a chiptune melody that puts you off for a bit after the shock of Sans' first attack, provided you survive, and makes you remember his quirky demeanor and attitude. He was a lazy and carefree skeleton until now... Then... at 1:17, the instrumental creeps in menacingly to remind you there's something very off here, and finally 1:25 drops and makes you realize you're in over your head and the skeleton you thought you knew is quite done with your shit and you are forced to face what you've done. Even the text between turns says things like "You feel your sins crawling on your back" Then we get to 1:40, where by now you've had a turn or two as Sans lectures you and the song almost takes a more upbeat but still sinister tone. That's when you realize, at least for a majority of the fight, he's being overly casual and looks like he's not even trying, but is still punishing you nonetheless. This song isn't playing for you. It's being played AT you. Then we get to 2:28, which brings it down to the gruesome reality of it all. This is your fault. You brought this on yourself, and the song reminds you of the dark and horrible events that has transpired. Sans isn't fighting you because he wants to, but because he HAS to. If anything he would rather you to stop and reset, because you learn that he KNOWS you can do this. That's when I broke. That's what I got out of this song, and it actually made me quit my genocide run, because this song really fucked me up emotionally and made me think about what I was doing combined with what Sans was telling me.
Soooo well explained dude. I feel like sometimes the fandom forgets just how powerful the layered messages in this song are ngl. It's been memed the hell out of it but damn, it still makes me feel things
Not just in Undertale either. In the Earthbound Halloween Hack, it plays when you fight the enraged Andonuts. You couldn’t just leave a harmless man alone to wallow in his sorrows, and had to pursue him into his nightmares to murder him. And he’s had enough of your bullshit. Yeah…Megalovania is the song that plays when you’ve seriously fucked up and are about to answer for it.
I had never heard of this game, and then my friend showed me Megalovania, and now I have played every ending in Undertale. This game is so incredibly balanced, it's so simple yet so complicated. 10/10
Megalovania perfectly represents why Undertale was so successful, it does NOT try to hide the fact that it is a videogame,it outright embraces it and uses it to it's advantage just like megalovania, that electronic beat is exactly like that from old videogames but remixes that tone into absolute perfection, also you asked what Undertale was and i have the answer for you,it is a fleshed-out world with detailed characters in every corner,a world that allows you to make ANY choice you want and where these choices MATTER infinitely, easter eggs all around the map, a world that is so happy with you not seeing something so fleshed-out and immersive,a world that KNOWS it is just a videogame and takes videogame cliches and classic things that gamers will do to a whole new level, but to join that world you need ONE thing, determination. That,my friend, that,is Undertale.
This remind me I was supposed to recommend some Touhou songs. Like Undertale, the games are made by just one guy (goes by the name ZUN) - besides a few side games in Touhou, where ZUN cooperates with Tasofro -, and music is a big part of the culture around both. Also Touhou has some of the best song names out there :p. Here's some potential ones to consider that I happen to like. Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat (from Double Dealing Character) - this one's funny because the boss this plays in the background for is a drum spirit, and I think it's possible to sync parts of the fight to the music Septette for the Dead Princess (from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil) Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (from Imperishable Night) Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome-Kagome (same as the above) Flowering Night (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody version) Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind (from Unidentified Fantastic Object) Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall (from Mountain of Faith) Rigid Paradise (from Ten Desires) The Traditional Old Man and the Stylish Girl (Hopeless Masquerade version) Broken Moon is also great but as a pre-boss theme it's quite a short and simple loop.
Starting Undertale with the one soundtrack that doesn't follow Undertale's leitmotif. Which also makes sense, since the boss battle this is in comes at the end of the path that you have to go pretty far out of your way to do. Also yes. I know Toby's had this song in his pocket from before his Homestuck days. I know I've heard him play this at meetupsduring Smash Melee tourneys.
Re: "That's how you're gonna end it?" This is a song that plays during a boss battle where there are places where the player can just stop and idle on a screen. So if the player idles too long, it revamps to play all over again
Context for this is that Megalovania in Undertale serves as the final boss track for the Genocide route in Undertale (Undertale has a whole quirk where you can choose to spare all enemies and it changes the narrative). Sans is a very laid back and lazy character, and will only make an effort to kill the player if they've killed absolutely everyone else in the world. He only has 1 HP, but actively chooses to ignore game mechanics. As for Undetale music recommendations: Anticipation + Enemy Approaching, Battle Against A True Hero, Death by Glamour, Bergentrückung + ASGORE, Almagam. Deltarune's OST is on a whole another level to Undertale, so i'd be a massive fool not to also throw out Rude Buster, Field of Hopes and Dreams, Checker Dance, Vs Susie, and The World Revolving as recommended listening too.
Every song in this game is connected in some way, except for this one, because to get this song you have to basically separate yourself from all connection to every character in the game. It’s nuts
Ah yes Undertale, the RPG that gets everyone with their pants off and jams one of the best OST down your butt, while least expecting it. Megalomania is just all over the place as an holistic banger and catchy tune, in 8 bits glory (or something like that).
I love this song, I remember watching a band (Super Soul Bros, you can find their performance that I was at on YT lol) that does game covers play this live with brass and everything it was so dope.
Undertale's soundtrack was popular enough to have its soundtrack played by an orchestra, I can't remember which orchestra exactly, but it was really fun. Orchestral Megalovania is pretty cool.
You feel like you're approaching the pearly gates, yet you feels your sins crawling on your back. Also, some Undertale songs come in pairs, like Nyeh Heh Heh and Bonetrousle or Burgentruken and Asgore with the first being an intro to the other.
there was a huge orchestrial score of this at a game awards show a few years back i believe, when it won multiple awards in several catagories. we're talking full brass, electric guitars, violins, the full works, and if anything it is not even better than the original since Toby Fox used that Classie game boopbeeps to mimic those sounds in the original anyway.
I would like to recommend something a bit different. "Razormind" by Simon Viklund. It's the Payday 2 battle theme. Pretty much everything from Simon Viklund is an absolute banger though. Other good tracks by Viklund are "I will give you my all" and "Alessio: Payday".
Recommending "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" from Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. It's the main vocal theme of the expansion and comes with an official music video (that begins with a spoiler warning for your convenience).
The confusion about what Undertale is and where this would even fit in leads me to believe that people's mental image about Undertale moght not that of the "zany, highly fluctuating in and energy level and emotion with absurdities galore" game that is absolutely is.
Having the hardest most grueling boss fight in the game accompanied by the best track in the game is genius since it makes you want to keep trying no matter how many times Sans gives you the business.
Legendary song. It even got itself into Smash Bros out of pure meme status alone. Still gonna request that you check out some of the high-octane tracks from the mmo Phantasy Star Online 2. My personal favorites are Borderless: Attack and Esca Falz Mother: Ridroid Part. But there are arguably better tracks in the game from episodes 5 and 6 that amp things up even more. This game has dynamic music that changes depending on what's going on in-game at the time, so some of the tracks are rather long if you stitch them all together. It's better to look for specific high points. Esca Falz Mother: Ridroid part in particular has one of the most finely crafted buildups of any game track I've ever heard, followed by exquisite chaos with ridiculous drums and guitar. It really feels like whoever composed it was a little bit insane in a good way.
Ey a fellow PSO fan. I still to this day say Over the universe is the penultimate final boss theme for PSO, gomoroth, sodom are absolutely amazing but over the universe, especially paired with all tge other falz themes is jusy so good. Also Shiva had a pretty good theme iirc.
Such a random request. And here I thought I was the only person who'd request ESCA Falz Mother's chase sequence. (Meaning, I put it on the list yesterday. Lol)
Megalovania is something of tobyfox's signature song. This is the third(that i'm aware of) published iteration of the song he's done. He did an earthbound romhack that had another version, and he did yet another version in like 2009 for a webcomic called homestuck.
"I feel like I'm approaching the pearly gates right now." Accurate. "I feel like this little ominous bastard is a laughing at me like 'how have you not heard this before?" Also accurate.
The actual fight matched the song, there are some really good fan made versions of this especailly the metal versions. Undertale was a pretty interesting game.
In addition to repping for the Undertale soundtrack in general (Death by Glamour is my personal recommendation starting off), I have to also suggest music from _Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne,_ which leans more towards less heavy tracks than, say, Mick Gordon's oeuvre, but has a wonderfully eerie feel. I suggest "Normal Battle" and "Fierce Battle" to start off with. "Normal Battle" is a pretty simple loop, but if you can find an extended version with all the solo variations, it would last about eight minutes. Oh, and final tidbit: They have lyrics. In _English._ Try and listen and see if you can make them out.
I read through all of Homestuck before ever knowing what an Undertale was, other than something that I heard mentioned was referenced in the animation set to 'Carne Vale', so... I can't think of Megalovania without astral-projecting back to my Homestuck days.
@@RoseOfNight I'm incapable of judging Undertale Megalovania without comparing it to Homestuck Megalovania, because I listened to the latter just so many times, it sounds like the "right" version to me now.
Oh heck you doin’ undertale now? Absolutely check out Spider Dance! That’s one of my favorites. I think one of the most simple lines ever in a game to hit me so hard emotionally is when you look in the mirror towards the end and ‘Despite everything, it’s still you.’
Also, I like how you said all the hard games when you described the song... It's apt considering that 'little bastard' is one of the hardest bosses in all of gaming.
You might as well just react to the full OST of Undertale and Deltarune at this point. A few things that you will pick up from listening to Toby Fox's music is that he is a melodic composer and heavily uses leitmotifs throughout them.
Undertale is great for its OST, but in its sequel deltarune in chapter 2 that just came out there is an even bigger banger imo called “BIG SHOT” but there are 3 versions that build up through the game leading to it, starting with “Spamton” then “Nows your chance to be a” into listening to “BIG SHOT” and listening to the build up is worth it 👍🏻
Oh Man you Just tackled another Pandora box :D if i may i'd like to recommend few pieces here : Waterfall area theme (it's sooo chill to listen), Bonetrousle, Asgore theme, Save the World and His theme :)
Short explanation: This game gives you the option to avoid hurting/killing the creatures you face in (almost) every possible encounter, and literally asks you to do so. You get to the fight in which this song is featured by doing the exact opposite: being a complete b*****d and going out of your way to kill every possible being you can in every area of the game until they just stop approaching you at all. It's referred to as a "genocide run," and features one of the hardest fights in the game. The game also calls you out on your shit before the fight begins. And it is *glorious*.
The entire Undertale OST is fantastic and would recommend checking it out (you'll also get it all plus context from playing it ;) Megalovania was not crafted for Undertale but for an old halloween romhack of earthbound Toby Fox did, if you want some banger Undertale tracks I would recommend: Asgore, A New Medium / Core, Spider Dance, Death by Glamour, Hopes and Dreams, and of course last but not least Undertale. They also held an orchestra concert for its 5 year anniversary last year and I highly recommend checking it out.
Probably the most iconic boss fight and boss OST in the past decade. Toby really blew it away with this track. The song actually first appeared in his Earthbound Mod and then in Homestuck before appearing as Sans boss OST. Each version sounds different and they're pretty interesting to compare.
Jesse at the beginning: "WTF is this shit?! Why are you making me listen to this??" Jesse at the end: "WTF is this shit?! Why didn't you make listen to this sooner???"
because their gameplay is often calm jrpg have very often some crazy epic music, after all more than in other games the music the music have a bigger role to raise the tension up and give sense of urgency where the gameplay doesn't do it
Megalovania is the ur-song for video game boss fights. Every kid who grew up listening to NES or SNES soundtracks heard Megalovania at one point, but couldn't remember where. It's a song that you've heard long before you actually hear it as a gamer.
you might enjoy the homesick version made a few years before this one. It was made by the same guy before he started work on Undertale. Toby Fox has a lot of great work in homestuck. you should really look into the music from it. similar to kingdom hearts, the story is hard to get into, but the music is amazing regardless.
Fun fact: this song didn't originate from Undertale. This was a remake of a song in 4 previous works. (but over-all been redone bout 8 times now) Megaolavia just so happens to be the title that stuck. Side-note: there's a Fan made version of this song called Disbelief. (it's a what-if about San's Brother fighting you at the end instead of him.) & let me tell you, it's crazier then this. the whole this is 15 minutes long but it's the acted called Backbone that make it shine.
One if the best things about this song (game wise) is EVERY song, and ALL the music in the game has been at a much lower bit rate... then THIS song kicks in, and you are like "What just happened to my ears?!" Lol!
Since despite this video's age I'm not seeing this answered in the comments at least how I'd answer it: The game's a retro-styled JRPG complete with turn-based combat that mixes things up via (mostly, some fights change how exactly it works) a bullet hell mini-game to avoid enemy attacks. It's the music paired to the boss fight that is simultaneously the hardest (The bullet hell to dodge his attacks are ridiculous on it) and easiest (he has 1hp. You just have to hit him once. Of course he's also the only enemy in the game who knows how to dodge) on a semi-hidden route in the game that gives the worst ending - This is the music that plays during the final boss fight of the game's evil route, a route that ends with you losing your soul to a demon child and which corrupts the best ending (not in terms of the game data, if you do the pacifist route which is how you get the best ending after doing this one the game shows that your character is still possessed by the demon child). Additional context on the character you're fighting while this music is playing - He's a friendly skeleton who likes puns, is a lazy bones, speaks in comic sans, and constantly wears slippers. Thoughout the normal route of the game he's there providing comic relief to the nonsense going on. His dialogue at the start of this fight, by contrast? "it's a beautiful day outside. birds are singing, flowers are blooming... on days like these, kids like you... Should be burning in hell ." What's also interesting to me is that Megalovania wasn't originally a piece of Undertale music. Toby Fox originally composed it for his Earthbound romhack. And then used it again when he did music for Homestuck. Undertale is the third time Toby Fox used Megalovania.
It's funny you mentioned Mega Man X at the end, cause there's actually an extra song in the soundtrack titled "Song that Might Play when you Fight Sans" made entirely with instruments from Mega Man X2. (Sans is the name of the skeleton dude Megalovania plays for.)
Just to give you an idea how well known this song is: It's a track in Smash Ultimate as a bonus for getting the Sans costume. It's one of the two tracks that are like this (the other one being a Cuphead track).
funny thing about the undertale and his other soundtracks as a whole, you slowly start to realise how much he Motifs his other songs into his music wich has resulted in the running gag that "he only wrote 7 songs and made a bunch of remixes of them" still one of the bests OSTs to come out of gaming tho
idk if someone alredy told it but, this song play when you kill every single monster on the underground, without leaving a single survivor sans comes to make you suffer for a long time while fighting him, and he dodges every attack- but he gets tired and you are finnally able to kill him. and his fight is also known as one of the most difficult battles in the game.
So, the thing about Undertale is there's two ways to play through the game. You can peacefully negotiate with the enemies you face - the 'pacifist' route - or you can murder them - the 'genocide' route. The bony fellow is Sans, a character you meet throughout the game but never actually fight - until the end of the game, where he appears before the final boss to judge your sins.. If you've fully committed to the genocide route and have killed everything you see (including Sans' brother Papyrus), Sans decides you need to be stopped at any cost, and presents you with the most brutal fight you've had so far. Megalovania is the music for that fight.
Oh no what have you done lmao Well I personally think that to listen to Undertale ost you need context for most of the tracks to truly appreciate them but there are also some like Megalovania, ASGORE, Spider Dance, Hopes and Dreams etc. which one can listen to without knowing what Undertale is and somewhat enjoy them.
You should check out the determination album. It’s the undertale songs remixed and remastered in metal and electronic and it’s an official product. More real instruments and less midi sounding if that’s your jam

Undertale:
Heartache
Bonetrousle
Spear of Justice
Metal Crusher
Death by Glamour
Another Medium
Spider Dance & Dummy (variations on the same theme)
Bergentruckung + ASGORE (first one is a brief intro to the latter, listen to together)
Hopes and Dreams + Save the World + His Theme (all in a row, essentially the finale of the game)
Battle Against a True Hero (also from No Mercy)
Deltarune:
The Legend
Lancer
Field of Hopes and Dreams
Rude Buster
The World Revolving
Roulxs Kaard
Chaos King
Don't Forget
Queen
A CYBER'S WORLD?
Hey Every ! + Spamton + Now's Your Chance (again, listen to these songs in a row for full character experience)
Pandora Palace
Attack of the Killer Queen
Knock You Down
BIG SHOT
Until Next Time
I am sure there are other worthwhile choices but that's what I am leaving here. Great reactions!
even better!!
You forgot Ghost Fight, the boss theme for Napstablook. It's a good swingy tune.
For a man with no training he sure does love to use a lot of FUCKING _LEITMOTIFS_
He has even made songs for Gamefreak, a whole soundtrack for a proyect which I have no idea what came of it, and the Battle Tower theme for Pokémon Sword and Shield.
You also missed my fave:
Your Best Nightmare and Finale
It should be noted that this song stands out quite a bit from most in the game, when most battles/events occur in the game you get a chiptune style goofy/upbeat type of song, where as with megalovania and some other select songs in the game you get the rare song that is genuinely trying to impress a serious tone of a certain type upon the situation, in this case being a intense battle with someone who actually hates you and wants you dead.
To be fair, it is usually at times when you've done, I dunno... untold amounts of wanton murder?
Actually megalovania is the theme of the player and or sans.
It's not exactly for sans.
The song that might play when you fight sans is for sans.
But since Sans is one of the last monsters left and is the judge
He is an extremely dangerous foe to you because of his KR Effect.
So megalovania can go for either Sans (genocide) Or the player (genocide)
@@legendarytronic7774 actually it was vriskas before sans or the players. The scene it was used in hs was also badass and destructive. Full of hatred and death tbh 💀
@@meow.4972 If we gonna do this kind of "Um actually" it was in fact Dr Andonuts theme from Toby Fox's Earthbound Romhack before all that.
@@meow.4972 also also, It is actually Aradia's theme. (proof of it is her pesterquest theme called "Yeah it is.")
This is how I feel about every Fromsoft soulsborne game.
May I recommend Outer Wilds (not to be confused with The Outer Worlds) to you?
undertale is never going to fully die sometime there is gonna be a remake i know it
Persona 4 Golden
You've opened a whole can of worms now, all the bossbattle tracks are fantastic, and the area themes are more calm and what you were expecting.
If you don't care for spoilers you should look up the Sans bossfight and record your reaction and put it here, I'd love to see it
Megalovania is sort of Toby Fox's signature song, and some rendition of it can be found a number of works he made or collaborated on.
So far, its been in the Earthbound Halloween Hack, Undertale, Homestuck, & Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
Also Pokémon
@@dirtydan7479 No, the track Toby composed for Pokemon is not another Megalovania. I believe it's based off another song he made for Homestuck specifically.
@@zukamimotu..2071 ohhh I read the comment incorrectly, I thought it was listing what he has worked on, I just know he worked on sword and shield 😅, that’s good to know tho, thanks!

@@astralbirthvoid02 oh no, it's something not nearly as innocent.
Undertale has mind blowing good music, my personal favorite track is Asgore's Theme "Bergentrückung" with the intro, its GREAT
YES. It's SUCH an underrated song!!!
Burger truck
I highly recommend listening to Hopes and Dreams + SAVE the World + His Theme, they only come as a package deal
they represent the perfect conclusion to all the emotions you feel throughout the game.
My favorite songs in the game. I agree they should always come as a package deal.
Jesse: I feel like I'm arriving at the pearly gates...
Sans: Well, kid... you're about to have a bad time.
This one still haunts me with that damn skeleton
This is the theme music of "You dun goofed now, buddy."
"YoU sOuNd LiKe SoMeOnE wHo DuN gOoFeD 57 tImEs!"
It's an interesting experience seeing someone with no familiarity with Undertale react to the OST, because within gaming and meme culture, this song was everywhere for a good number of years, and even resulted in this song being added into Super Smash Bros Ultimate along with a skin of Sans- he is the skeleton guy and this is the theme for his Boss fight in Undertale.
sans undertale
The song, for me, really captures the whole mood and context of this boss fight.
Right at the start, you get a chiptune melody that puts you off for a bit after the shock of Sans' first attack, provided you survive, and makes you remember his quirky demeanor and attitude. He was a lazy and carefree skeleton until now...
Then... at 1:17, the instrumental creeps in menacingly to remind you there's something very off here, and finally 1:25 drops and makes you realize you're in over your head and the skeleton you thought you knew is quite done with your shit and you are forced to face what you've done. Even the text between turns says things like "You feel your sins crawling on your back"
Then we get to 1:40, where by now you've had a turn or two as Sans lectures you and the song almost takes a more upbeat but still sinister tone.
Uh oh, first the FFXIV community, now you've summoned the Undertale one. XD
"Throw wide the gates" indeed.
Primordial Beat ~ Pristine Beat (from Double Dealing Character) - this one's funny because the boss this plays in the background for is a drum spirit, and I think it's possible to sync parts of the fight to the music
Septette for the Dead Princess (from Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)
Reach for the Moon, Immortal Smoke (from Imperishable Night)
Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome-Kagome (same as the above)
Flowering Night (Scarlet Weather Rhapsody version)
Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind (from Unidentified Fantastic Object)
Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall (from Mountain of Faith)
Rigid Paradise (from Ten Desires)
The Traditional Old Man and the Stylish Girl (Hopeless Masquerade version)
Broken Moon is also great but as a pre-boss theme it's quite a short and simple loop.
Awesome. Thrilled to see this here, Megalovania is iconic!
RichaadEB & ThunderScott did a really awesome metal cover of it. Highly recommend.
The full albums (yeah multiple) RichaadEB and Ace Waters have done covering Undertale's ost are incredible
Re: "That's how you're gonna end it?"
This is a song that plays during a boss battle where there are places where the player can just stop and idle on a screen.
As for Undetale music recommendations:
Anticipation + Enemy Approaching, Battle Against A True Hero, Death by Glamour, Bergentrückung + ASGORE, Almagam.
Deltarune's OST is on a whole another level to Undertale, so i'd be a massive fool not to also throw out Rude Buster, Field of Hopes and Dreams, Checker Dance, Vs Susie, and The World Revolving as recommended listening too.
Probably add BIG SHOT and Cyber World to that list now. Chapter 2 was even better in a lot of ways.
@@Golemie Yeah, I still need to get back to chapter 2, I did see its OST added like 40 more tracks.
I love coming back to this reaction :D
It's just beautiful!
Every song in this game is connected in some way, except for this one, because to get this song you have to basically separate yourself from all connection to every character in the game. It’s nuts
It's always such a joy to see you react to music I love
Toby Fox is an an insane genius. He programed this entire game and did all the music and graphics
temmie helped with a lot of the graphics
@@supercat4259 our unsung heroine
It's so wild to me in 2021 there are those that haven't consumed Undertale. Loved this.
I hadn't until this week! I am forever changed!
You feel like you're approaching the pearly gates, yet you feels your sins crawling on your back.
Also, some Undertale songs come in pairs, like Nyeh Heh Heh and Bonetrousle or Burgentruken and Asgore with the first being an intro to the other.
I think undertale ost is actually quite inspired by Jrpgs. Especially some parts of megalovania remind me of Dancing Mad from FF6.
there was a huge orchestrial score of this at a game awards show a few years back i believe, when it won multiple awards in several catagories. we're talking full brass, electric guitars, violins, the full works, and if anything it is not even better than the original since Toby Fox used that Classie game boopbeeps to mimic those sounds in the original anyway.
He was not prepared XD Also, Kirby has some of the best thrash metal of any video game series.
Thoroughlly recommend checking out the orchestral version of this performed by japanese orchestra
I would like to recommend something a bit different. "Razormind" by Simon Viklund. It's the Payday 2 battle theme. Pretty much everything from Simon Viklund is an absolute banger though.
Other good tracks by Viklund are "I will give you my all" and "Alessio: Payday".
would love to see razormind LETS FUKKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Recommending "Tomorrow and Tomorrow" from Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. It's the main vocal theme of the expansion and comes with an official music video (that begins with a spoiler warning for your convenience).
The confusion about what Undertale is and where this would even fit in leads me to believe that people's mental image about Undertale moght not that of the "zany, highly fluctuating in and energy level and emotion with absurdities galore" game that is absolutely is.
It was a matter of time for this to pop up, haha!
The fact that you gotta go out of your way to even hear this song in the game is just as brilliant as it is insane.
"I feel like I'm approaching the pearly gates right now."
Accurate.
"I feel like this little ominous bastard is a laughing at me like 'how have you not heard this before?"
Also accurate.
I love watching people experience undertale elements for the first time expecting something completely different.
I believe the technical term is "absolute banger."
I will die on the hill that Homestuck's Megalovania is better than Undertale's
@@RoseOfNight I'm incapable of judging Undertale Megalovania without comparing it to Homestuck Megalovania, because I listened to the latter just so many times, it sounds like the "right" version to me now.
Oh heck you doin’ undertale now? Absolutely check out Spider Dance! That’s one of my favorites.
I think one of the most simple lines ever in a game to hit me so hard emotionally is when you look in the mirror towards the end and ‘Despite everything, it’s still you.’
That moment when it finally dropped and Jesse's eyes widened.
I love coming back to this reaction
Both of Undyne's themes are great too
Just make sure you listen to "Spear of Justice" BEFORE "Battle Against a True Hero"
And it is *glorious*.
they way you seem to have emotional whiplash from listening it just shows how megalovania is..... "built diffrent" i guess lel
great video!
The entire Undertale OST is fantastic and would recommend checking it out (you'll also get it all plus context from playing it ;)
Megalovania was not crafted for Undertale but for an old halloween romhack of earthbound Toby Fox did, if you want some banger Undertale tracks I would recommend: Asgore, A New Medium / Core, Spider Dance, Death by Glamour, Hopes and Dreams, and of course last but not least Undertale.
They also held an orchestra concert for its 5 year anniversary last year and I highly recommend checking it out.
Man, I hope we get some more undertale this year. I would love to see your reaction to Bergentruckung + ASGORE or Spiderdance
Why are you making me listen to this??"
Jesse at the end: "WTF is this shit?! Why didn't you make listen to this sooner???"
because their gameplay is often calm jrpg have very often some crazy epic music, after all more than in other games the music the music have a bigger role to raise the tension up and give sense of urgency where the gameplay doesn't do it
You can tell a great artist is listening when their eyes roll up. They're really thinking.
Should be burning in hell ."
What's also interesting to me is that Megalovania wasn't originally a piece of Undertale music.
This song (and all of Undertales music) was done on a Sega Genesis sound card.
Easily one of the best boss themes ever written imo, love this track and love this game
Ok now you HAVE to listen to Asgore’s theme, it’s amazing!!
There’s a remix of this called “reality check through the skull” that is super dope, some people play that on beatsaber and it’s insane
One of my personal favorites from undertale is last goodbye
Edit: also you should watch the actual fight from this song and see how intense it is
idk if someone alredy told it but, this song play when you kill every single monster on the underground, without leaving a single survivor sans comes to make you suffer for a long time while fighting him, and he dodges every attack- but he gets tired and you are finnally able to kill him. and his fight is also known as one of the most difficult battles in the game.
3:51 My guy pulls out a bottle of cool water to chill out from the raw ENERGY this song emanates
The whole song is good but that breakdown with just the drums and the heavy guitar riff goes so hard
When you said you had zero expectation for it I was like "Oh buddy you're in for a ride"
Just fyi, a single man made this entire game and soundtrack.
temmie chang and a few other people made some art
This is the ultimate "Why do I hear boss music ...." that has ever been created ;)
I'd say to react to more of Toby Fox's music, but it looks like everyone and their dog beat me to requesting that.
Oh no what have you done lmao
Well
I personally think that to listen to Undertale ost you need context for most of the tracks to truly appreciate them but there are also some like Megalovania, ASGORE, Spider Dance, Hopes and Dreams etc. which one can listen to without knowing what Undertale is and somewhat enjoy them.
And towards the end he does this wacky thing were he just doesn't attack so you can't have your turn
After so much time, still a legendary ost.
You should check out the determination album. It’s the undertale songs remixed and remastered in metal and electronic and it’s an official product. More real instruments and less midi sounding if that’s your jam
