Good idea for a video, many drivers do not use their lights correctly, for example not using dipped beam in the rain or fog, or having fog lights on when it is not foggy.
I just wanted to say a big thank you to your channel. Watching your videos helped me a lot. I have passed my test today with 1 minor fault and it was my first time. Again, Thank you and I will keep spreading the word to subscribe to your channel. 😊
I swear every video you have done for weeks is exactly what I wanted to know xD for example this video, learing about the car lights - I've just passed and its been the first time ive been going out at night and I dont really know what/when to use the lights and this video again has helped me alot! thankyou:)
Pretty good, but a couple of minor comments: Some models do not have the ‘3 seconds indicator display’ option (notably the Toyota Yaris) on the stalk. Some models have ‘automatic high beam’, which can be setup manually. To switch it on in my car, it’s necessary to move the stalk forward, thus it’s necessary to pull it back 2 steps to ‘flash’ the lights if required. Essentially, it only operates once away from street lighting. Some only display their ‘daytime running lights’ when the parking brake is released, even if the power is switched on.
Optimal AUTOMATIC light control settings: leave the control switch in the AUTO setting. Along with DRLs (defined as 80% of headlight’s high beam power) a light sensor on the dash turns ON all of exterior lights when in dark(er) environments such as Dawn/Dusk, tunnels, indoor parking structures and when drivers “think” there is enough light while driving but there is not! Thanks

A lot of cars are different so even when you get use to using lights in your instructors car, you don’t usually end up getting that car and when you get your new car, you realise you have no one telling you how to put the lights on 😂 I realised that I’m going to have to ask the car salesman how to put dipped lights on side lights because I literally can’t remember and I’m the kind of person who would accidentally go out with main beam on and blind everyone 😅😅
Amazingly helpful video, thanks guys! I've got the driving essential skills book which is really useful. I understood the reason for using dipped headlights, but needed to see it, along with all the other types of lights in action!

I've heard that truck/lorry drivers in my place use headlights to communicate whether there are hazards along the road (landslides, deep potholes, dense fog, and the like) by alternating the headlamps' low and high beam. Back in the day, there were no radio communication devices as those were costly.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool The good thing is, drivers here know that the light-tinkering actually means something, to the point of it becoming a "driving culture". Hi, i've just passed my driving test and bought a Ford Fiesta. Can you please help me to tell how your map on the screen looks so real and how to set it up like that? You guys are awsome. Thanks
Forward facing fog lights are little more than fashion accessories. If you turn them out they will pick out the curbs/sides of the road in bad fog. As anyone that has competed in night car rallies will realise, fog lights can be used as cornering lights on narrow, twisty roads. So they should be turned out at around 30 degrees, although some drivers prefer to cross the beams. They should be wired through a relay, controlled with a stalk switch that can be reached while your hand is still on the wheel, and wired to come on only after the sidelights have been turned on. Also, forget those fashion light covers as if you accidentally leave the fogs on you won't burn them out. A little out of the league of the vast majority of drivers, but it never hurts to raise your game. Jack, the Japan Alps Brit
7:13 "Just in case" makes it sound like as if everyone has to jump away when you put your car into reverse gear, which is obviously not true. Primarily the driver has to pay attention and stop if anyone is in your way, the lights are the "just in case".
Thanks instructor for clarifying the traffic rules I know my traffic rules high beams are for roads in the country with no lighting I get people in the city that will tailgate me with their high beams on trying to blind me. I wish people would follow the driving rules taught in drivers Ed.

Auto light systems work well when it gets dark, as it puts the dipped headlamps (and tail lights) on to help us drive. However, when it is foggy or rainy in the daytime the system won't spot the poor weather and we will need to manually turn on our dipped headlamps to ensure we are visible to others.

Yes, turn on your dipped headlamps whenever visibility is low, due to poor weather or darkness. Fog lights will dazzle others if misused so we must only use them when allowed.
What software and hardware do you use to get the data (gear, etc.)? Showing the gear drew my attention as I've noticed lots of people cannot show the gear directly from the data.
Our GoPro cameras make the speed display for us, and then we add the rest manually! We did consider using data from the cars OBD port but never got round to it!
I sometimes noticed that some cars like to use hazard lights when driving in the rain. They really irritate other drivers behind them. I understand that it is not in the highway code. Is it ok or safe to use it that way?
No, save your hazard lights for a real hazard. If everyone used them in the rain it would be impossible to tell when someone wanted to change lanes or turn!

Why doesn't the DRL function turn on the rear lights? I've seen so many people driving in the dark without rear lights on because they think their lights are on as they see light from the front.
Thats how it is on all cars - there must be some regulation about it. It is a real problem when it's foggy or rainy in the daytime, as people must assume that the car will do everything for them and forget they need to turn on their dipped headlamps manually.
The indicator always moves the same way as you would steer. For example, on a car with an indicator stalk on the left we would move it down to indicate left and up to indicate right. Of course if the car has an indicator stalk on the right, this would be reversed 👍🏼

Do some newer cars automatically turn on the fog lights when turning on the low beams? I see a lot of drivers using their fog lights when it’s perfect weather conditions at night. Why do people do this?
No car turns on both fog lamps automatically with the dipped headlamps, but many cars use the fog lamps individually as cornering lights. Who know why drivers put them on - but to be honest we don’t find them very dazzling so let them get on with it.
