I wish my instructor had the patience to explain this to me instead of shouting at me for being scared to proceed between a parked car and an oncoming car!!!! Trying this tomorrow 🙏🏾
Omg yes !! My instructor used to scare me when I was driving..'what you doing!' 'You cant fit in there' 'go' 'why you stopping' stop, go, you don't know what you're doing!! Left me traumatised that I didn't drive since I passed
pro tip: use the mirror closest to the curb, check the distance, where is the curb compared to your car, how many inches? or feet even? now you can place the car close safely, get used to that while checking often where your driver's seat is at in the lane so you can learn where that wheel is without even having to check the mirror. It takes some time before you'll automatically know. For me, driving various cars every week, it took probably a bit longer than people driving just their own car.
1st rule of driving: slow down if you're unsure. Narrow spaces/lanes, bad weather, light changing to amber, unexpected situations, etc. No test administrator will fail you because you slowed down in a difficult situation, that's what you're supposed to do. It gives you time to think and react appropriately, exactly what they want to see you doing.
Definitely among most important aspects and does deserves to be examined, especially for how one treats fellow drivers who go by this rule. Where I live, the main obstacle to this rule is the non cooperative nature of fellow road users who are very likely to cause road rage over petty issues.

However when I started to drive my own car it took, and it still takes! a lot of time to guess if I fit in or not. From my experience at the beginning I expected to take much more space than car really needs. It really takes practise and you have to allow yourself to that. Don't be too hard on yourself. Check side mirrors, lean over the window, open the door to see where the curb is, get out of the car and see how far you are from another. And if the bus or garbage truck can fit in - you will too with ease. Once I miscalculated and scratched, luckily only, my bumper against column in underground parking which leads me to another conclusion - if have doubt's - don't do it :D It's better to slow down or stop and get people yell at you, but that still better option than crash or scratch.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I have struggled with my spatial awareness my entire life, and found this aspect of learning to drive very difficult. But today I passed my test - not a single fault - I cannot believe it! This type of issue arose a *lot* during my test, so many times that I had to judge if there was enough space for both myself and another car to get through, and you do explain this brilliantly so thank you so much!
I've had my license since 15 1/2 and I'm well into my 50s lol Still watch the videos though . I have friends and co-workers who are atrocious at certain driving conditions. The worst is my friend who can't properly judge the gap so she will actually speed up , clench her eye shut and blow through hoping she fits . Needless to say, she only has one sideview mirror attached and it's shattered and dinged beyond use. She's hopeless 😭
I have searched for hours an explanation of how to know i'm in the middle of the lane (google, youtube, instagram, etc) and found no useful tip. However you have solved my problem completely. It is amazing your way of thinking and explaining. This has really helped me!!! Now I can focus my attention on other things than fitting my car in the middle of the lane 🤣🤣🤣 Your videos are pure gold. I am eternally grateful 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
This was incredibly helpful for an American driving in the UK. I avoid those tight lanes as much as possible. This instruction makes me feel like I can get through without my heart pounding wildly. Thank you for your excellent teaching skills.
Super helpful, I find as a new learner that confidence behind the wheel is my biggest hurdle so having these types of videos that go over basic scenarios that I'm likely to find myself in help a lot in instilling that confidence

ive been trying to learn for a long time in the us and my mother basically gave up and its because ive nearly destroyed the axle cause i for the life of me cant figure out where i am in the lane and it increases my anxiety and my mother tends to scream alot which makes me mess up more. suffice to say this has been the best instruction for driving ive recieved...ever. because most of the time people tend to just tell me "youre too close to the curb" rather than helping me understand how to tell where i am. THANK YOU
Thank you for the patient, understanding videos. I’m an experienced driver who is having a lot of anxiety adjusting to a new car and these tips are so helpful towards getting my confidence back.
You’ve helped me develop understanding of driving cars. I’ve taken my theory test today after plenty of times of watching these types of videos of you. I passed today 48/50 on multiple choice thank you

Idek how you got another test booked so soon? Did you already book it in hoping to cancel it if you did pass the first one? It would relax some of my pressure on passing next week if i had hope on the next test being closer than the due date of my baby ahahahah😅
Been driving for ~40 years and the reference marker technique was new to me, although I suppose I must have been doing something similar unconsciously. Really useful video!
I got my licence a few years back, and still this video was interesting. Sometimes you just have to go over the basics again. You may know and apply them without thinking, but watching this, I got in a state of relearning. So I guess that's a plus :D
Personally as a new driver i found that this came easier with time, if you can try and get your instructor to get a cone or something to help you practice the distance near an object, the knowledge you gain from that is amazing and in fact helped me stop scraping the wheels on the curb when parking as well as getting through tight gaps when on busy roads
This is impeccable, I had so many tutors who charged unnecessary money, even if they would have explained half of it, the way he explained would be amazing, extremely good video 🙌🏻👍🏻
Yet again, another amazing tutorial for judging the narrow gaps in meeting situations and especially passing through width restrictions. Thank you for sharing your useful tip on how to imagine yourself for your car's central road positioning. This really helps the new learners with their road positioning.
Really appreciated your referencing using the clutch. These are what I’m referencing for my son who is learning to drive. Never under estimate the power of reviewing skills for the road.✅💯🍀🦋
I've had my license for 20 years now and never had any accidents, just found this channel and find it super interesting, lots of things still to learn!
You are an excellent instructor. It is so true, right now I am concerned about judging width and length of car to avoid hitting something or someone. You are really doing a great job addressing the concerns and fears of new drivers.
I will always slow down on non highway roads and always let the other car do what it whats to do. I do not tailgate. If it takes me 2 hours to get home when I am only 10 mins from my house so be it. I am going to get home SAFE AND SOUND
Sensible. However I can't see a 10 min journey turning into a 2 hour journey because you're ensuring safety. Maybe it would be 30 seconds to a minute longer.
Beautifully explained. One hint that you can add is people can place stickers on the inner edge where windscreen meets dashboard for both and left to make it easier for newbie drivers who are not very confident especially for gap judgement on the passenger side.
Hi , Could you please elaborate on this because I am new to driving and feel very scared while driving .If you share pictures regarding this I will definitely going to do it ..Thanks ..
This is exactly what I was looking for. If you can show the movement of your steering that would be helpful. You did show it in one of your videos for right hand carb judgements and parking. That videos was super duper brilliant. Thank you
I'm glad you found the video helpful. When driving it's best not to think about how much you turn the wheel. Just turn it as much as you need to achieve your position.
I’ve recently changed from a citroen DS4 to a C class Mercedes and I’m finding judging the width and length a real issue especially without rear sensors. Thank you for your videos they help even experienced drivers 😄
I'm having Refresher driving lessons as I haven't driven for 25+ years. I will be driving a Citroën Dispatch van, so this video is really beneficial to me!!. Your videos are being extremely helpful. I love your clear & concise instructions. Thank you SO much for all the work you have put into producing your videos - much appreciated.
I’ve passed my test but I redo practice mock tests and love learning new things like this to improve my driving, it can be really hard to judge this sort of thing
Brilliant advice and teaching for all drivers, newbies and oldies alike. Sometimes, if we have been driving for years, we get complacent, it is good to be reminded about road safety and using our judgment. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. The leg left method helped a lot, i asked my instructor and he was like you can use the lines on the road which doesn't really help me visualise driving if I was in a bigger car
Create reference points by parking up on left and right side. Park against left curb, now sit in the car, find the middle bottom of windscreen and place a sticker right there on the dash just under the windscreen interior in the middle. This is the centre and exactly where your left tyres will be from your driving perspective. Call this sticker 0. Now place 3 more stickers equal distance between each other the left and centre of the windscreen, in other words you break up the left hand side of the windscreen into 4 quarters. Sticker A is closest to centre, then B, the C. Sticker A is now a reference for your left wing mirror plus a small gap. You can easily pass a small car/bike using this reference. Sticker B can be used for medium cars and sticker C for larger vehicles/vans/buses. You can also use sticker 0 to park forwards on the left while leaving a 4 finger gap against the curb. Perfect parking every time.
Commercial driver for 18+ yrs here. Interesting take. i like the leg trick to stay centered. How I learned lane control, and this will date me, was back in the day PacMan was a thing and while driving I would put the zipper (center line dividing the lanes) right in the crook of the wind shield where dash and side of the wind shield meet. To this 14 year old I imagined PacMan (wind shield corner) was eating his dots (zipper). Just another trick that may help.
You are an Excellent driving instructor. This video is accurate because it literally helped me to master staying in my lane. You also helped me to learn how to drive through spaces. Thank you and continue the good work.
Nice video. I've been riding motorbikes for around 14 years but only just started learning to drive. One of the things I was concerned about was this, so I brought this up with my instructor before we got on the road. He described pretty much like what you've mentioned. Don't think so much about the car. Look at the gap, is it big enough, then look ahead through the gap. In the end, it actually came quite naturally as long as I remembered that. Seems to actually flow nicely from riding a bike. It's a similar theory when riding a bike through tight gaps. You just look at the width first and then ride through the gap. If it's super tight, you have to go at walking speed through. The looking where you want to go, not where you are is very deeply entrenched already.
Absolutely fantastic instruction. So helpful as we have bought a new car, bigger than I have ever driven before. First outing today, I clipped the wing mirror as I was concentrating on the oncoming traffic as I tried to pass a parked lorry on a blind bend. Only a graze, I was lucky.
Dude, you're so interesting to listen to! I haven't even started learning to drive and I binge watch your videos 😆 everything is so easy to understand, thank you!
An amazing video. I will admit I did clip a wing mirror the other day despite having 50+ years experience. I didn't damage the other car and my mirror suffered just a slight crack on the repeater flasher. After watching this video, will take care not to do it again. I wish every driver who parks on a narrow road would turn in their mirrors. I replayed the video and counted. Less than 50% had done so. I believe some cars have mirrors which turn in automatically when the car is locked.
I finally got my license 2 days ago. Your videos really helped me with my knowledge about driving, and I think you are a great teacher for anyone trying to learn to drive as well.
thank you so much for this! I always thought it was just me who struggled with this and that it came naturally to anyone else, I honestly didn't realise that it's something other learners have to learn! thank you x
Caught these videos when I was getting a refresher before driving on the motorway again. I've been driving for years and I think putting my left leg in the middle of the lane has improved my road positioning. Thanks

I can’t help watching this guy’s videos. I passed my test two years ago but still find tips from him! And just love the way he explains things
Thank you so much, very nice to hear that.
Passed my test a month and a half ago and forgot everything I learned. Just go my first car and you're helping me not to crash. Cheers lad
Yeah, I remembered seating in the passenger seat for the first time, and having this perspective shock, wondering why we haven’t hit anybody
Watching when you're young helps you when you are older.
Me thinking to myself : Why the hell am I watching this, I'm already familiar with my car and I did well on the driving exam.
Video : "-because I remember sitting there thinkin-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"
Me : Subbed
Lmao he is cool mane 😂
Just started my lessons and this is my main problem! My perspective is all off, sooo glad it’s a common problem 😂 I felt like I was stupid. This video has helped. Will try in my next lesson ❤
ive been trying to learn for a long time in the us and my mother basically gave up and its because ive nearly destroyed the axle cause i for the life of me cant figure out where i am in the lane and it increases my anxiety and my mother tends to scream alot which makes me mess up more. suffice to say this has been the best instruction for driving ive recieved...ever. because most of the time people tend to just tell me "youre too close to the curb" rather than helping me understand how to tell where i am. THANK YOU
Thank you for the patient, understanding videos. I’m an experienced driver who is having a lot of anxiety adjusting to a new car and these tips are so helpful towards getting my confidence back.
I wish more driving instructors had as much patience and knew to explain all these aspects. Good job man!
You’ve helped me develop understanding of driving cars. I’ve taken my theory test today after plenty of times of watching these types of videos of you. I passed today 48/50 on multiple choice thank you
Congratulations! You're welcome.
i failed my test a few weeks ago on clearance from a car that was parked on the left hand side. i’m booked in for another test in a weeks time and your videos are massively helpful. thank you so much for taking the time and having the patience to make these videos. i have recommended your channel to a lot of my friends that are learning to drive. you are a gem😊
Good luck with your test next week!
Idek how you got another test booked so soon? Did you already book it in hoping to cancel it if you did pass the first one? It would relax some of my pressure on passing next week if i had hope on the next test being closer than the due date of my baby ahahahah😅
The way you explained it makes so much sense, I wish my instructor told me that.
Been driving for ~40 years and the reference marker technique was new to me, although I suppose I must have been doing something similar unconsciously. Really useful video!
Man I'd love to have this guy as a instructor!
I am very much comfortable with the language and getting somewhere now. What a powerful instructor
If you're watching this and you're in a country that drives on on the other side. Watching this off a mirror might help
Yet again, another amazing tutorial for judging the narrow gaps in meeting situations and especially passing through width restrictions.
Thank you for sharing your useful tip on how to imagine yourself for your car's central road positioning. This really helps the new learners with their road positioning.
Thank you.
What a genius idea to judge the gap using the surrounding cars.
Thank you very much!
This is my biggest fear, my first car was really huge & I scratched it twice scared me to this day
I will always slow down on non highway roads and always let the other car do what it whats to do. I do not tailgate. If it takes me 2 hours to get home when I am only 10 mins from my house
so be it. I am going to get home SAFE AND SOUND
Sensible. However I can't see a 10 min journey turning into a 2 hour journey because you're ensuring safety. Maybe it would be 30 seconds to a minute longer.
@@ConquerDriving Yeah, exactly
Id burn pass you
@@spopple88 ^ this guy can have fun we would get along
We don’t like drivers like you especially in 1 lane roads
Really a quality material. Local instructors just become angry on newbies, You are just awesome !! Thanks
This gentleman is so clear and straightforward in his explanations very easy to follow .
@@monarchsharma5313 are you better at driving now
This is exactly what I was looking for.
Im right-driver country, beginer, one year almost. Anytime I hawe think about the proporcions of my car, now I started to think diferently. Thank you!
Best driving instructor on UA-cam so far for me. Thank you, sir, Your content helps me a lot in learning how to be a good driver 🙏
Thank you for this video. The leg left method helped a lot, i asked my instructor and he was like you can use the lines on the road which doesn't really help me visualise driving if I was in a bigger car
Glad someone is teaching that. the amount of times i've seen people driving a corsa thinking it's bigger than a lorry is baffling
Dude, this is so, so helpful. This is my number one fear ahead of starting driving lessons in the summer. Thank you so much!
good luck!
i wish i had a 3rd person view like gta
This is actually the BEST video on safe positioning! I'm definitely using this on lessons. Thank you!
Thank you ☺
Create reference points by parking up on left and right side.
You are so intelligent you discripes the main problem but it gets more difficult in the curves
Definitely more difficult in curves as the road looks more narrow, if you're not sure it's best to slow down.
I'd love this "How to Judge" series videos! Carry on this kind of videos!
Thank you. I think next week is braking judgement. But I haven't decided which one to make available yet.
Thank you! That's original.
I haven't even started learning to drive and I binge watch your videos 😆 everything is so easy to understand, thank you!
brilliant video, when i was almost at the end of the video i couldn't believe it had been 15 minutes, didn't feel like it at all.
Thank you. You’re the best teacher ever. Everything you say makes sense. Soon as I mastered driving I thought that’s it Job done 😂😂😂 I was so wrong…
I passed my test a couple a weeks ago, still here watching. Thanks for your help! plus you're super cute 💋
Thank you for the compliment and congratulations on passing your driving test 😊
thank you so much for this! I always thought it was just me who struggled with this and that it came naturally to anyone else, I honestly didn't realise that it's something other learners have to learn! thank you x
Everyone struggles with it. Apart from farmers, they can drive from birth 😀
Most helpful informative videos about driving ! Thank you! New sub from Australia 🇦🇺 and about to start learning to drive as a 35 year old ✨
I hope you enjoy it!
This is the video about judging your distance to the cars on your both sides that I've been looking for! Thanks
Caught these videos when I was getting a refresher before driving on the motorway again. I've been driving for years and I think putting my left leg in the middle of the lane has improved my road positioning. Thanks
He's an absolutely amazing teacher and he's very hilarious and makes learning crystal clear and fun and easy to understand and apply !!! Thnx a million !!! 🙌💯👍🔥
Thank you, I'm very happy to hear you like the videos.
0:44 This is a really important tip
This is something important that we didn’t learn..🤩
Finally someone is explaining how I see the curb and the lane while in the driver's seat! It's hard for me to tell when I'm drifting to the right or left.
Driving from Arizona, wide and open now living and driving in England , this is helpful.
