Coming from the US and Canada where signaling is very straightforward, this video really helped me understand the idiosyncratic approach of Brits. Thank you!
Guys, just want to say very big thanks to you! You are more helpful than teacher I had lesson with. In 3 hours she could not explain easy things which you explained in 9 minutes! And also it is not just quicker but also for free. I subscribed your channel straight away. Oh, yeah, and also I put like on each video I watch :) Thank you so much and good luck with your channel :)
At 8.40. I noticed (and i`d do the same [in that situation] ) that the `learner` driver didn`t look in the direction he was moving when reversing but relied on mirrors alone. I think this is a much more controlled way. You have better vision at all times looking one way and it`s also done in the best seating position. I understand the need for all around observation checking but surely once as you begin is enough, then carry on exactly as you showed. Yes? No? On my test soon I will be looking mainly in the way i`m going (if I have to do it) but I do recon it`s more awkward having turn around in contorted positions sometimes when it`s much safer not to. Not turning around (*all the time) you have much better vision forwards when looking into your mirrors surely. Your videos are probably the best online, thanks.
We must keep a good awareness of what is happening all around our car as we manoeuvre, and since there are blind spots the mirrors don’t cover we do need to look around with our head through the windows during the manoeuvre. The part of the video you mentioned isn’t a great example of how to observe actually - we’d look around more than that ideally, even if it meant stopping the car for a moment if needed.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Good answer. And tx. for the honesty when you mentioned "that it probably wasn`t a great example". I ran that by my own instructor and he said exactly the same. That it`s a good idea to always look around .... NOT just check the blind spots once at the beginning then rely on mirrors. (I think people get mixed up (or don`t know at all) about the TRUE blind spot in a mirror..... and looking over your shoulder Thanks for clearing it up (and I WONT be doing the same [in that situation] now! : ) )

Hello. I’m beginning to learn the Highway Code, road signs and info like this before beginning scooter driving lessons. I’m unbelievably nervous. Just watching these videos is making me literally shake with nerves. What techniques have you used to make it easer to revise and remember all these hundreds of road safety rules? I really want to be confident on the road. So I’m not trapped in the house 24/7 and not having to rely on my parents for transport. But my nerves and my Autistic Spectrum Disorder is making this road confidence I want seem like an impossible task.

I lived in the US for almost 20 years. When I returned to the UK, I could not believe the number of drivers who nowadays see indicating as a sign of weakness - or just too inconvenient. Why has this happened?
Of course. If the lack of indication suggests they are going straight ahead, then another driver may pull away when it's not actually safe to do so. To stay safe, we always wait if we aren't sure - but it's really annoying when we see we waited for nothing because they didn't indicate. If only everyone was considerate to each other driving would be a lot safer and enjoyable!
We should indicate if it will help someone else - but it's OK not to if it won't. Consider that the road position of our car is another method of signalling what we are doing - and often that makes it clear what we intend to do. This video explains this: Signalling with our road position: ua-cam.com/video/FxhXX0EaI5Y/v-deo.html
I don't understand the British mentality about driving around parked vehicles. Signaling can very rarely be bad. However, the people behind us may not see what we have in front of us. Will we just suddenly move to the other lane? Furthermore, it can also help them by telling that there is a vehicle they will also have to avoid. We always have to indicate that we'll move in the other lane no matter how much of the car moves into it. P.S. Your videos are great, even though we have some things differently where I live.
+TechnoBacon55 Yes, there are differences in regulations about this - for us in the U.K. signalling around parked cars is optional, so we can do it if we want to or if the situation needs it. Glad you like our videos!
Have the driving test requirements changed since this video was posted because I have sometimes been asked whether a signal is necessary by my instructor and advised not to signal if nobody will benefit (when stopping or pulling away) because a signal deemed unnecessary can apparently be measured as a minor driving fault?
No, the test requirements haven't changed. It is still true that we only need to indicate when someone else would benefit, but there is no fault given if we choose to indicate even when there isn't anyone around.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool the problem with the "someone would benefit" rule is that what if there is a danger you are not noticing? I know, you should be aware of your surrounding, etc, but signalling should be mandatory, end of. Also, what I keep seeing (and this is a bigger problem) is quite a lot of drivers are not signalling when changing lanes.
I really enjoy your videos, but to suggest you dont need to signal (at all??)to leave a mini roundabout is, in my eyes incorrect advice. There are many mini roundabout exits on various angles and often a signal would greatly benefit other vehicles coming on to the roundabout from the exit after yours. eg a 3 exit mini where following the rd ahead is at about 10 oclock ( assuming approach at 6 oclock). The traffic coming from 10 oclock turning right 2nd exit ( for them 2 oclock), will be looking at your car for a signal to come off, so they can proceed with some progress.
+Graham Thanks for your comment. I take your point, but the exits are so close together on a mini-roundabout that there is probably only time for our indicators to flash once before we steer into our exit - which doesn’t really help anyone. However it is perfectly legal to indicate to leave, so if a driver thinks that it would be of benefit to others they are free to do so.
I fully understand the concept of mini roundabouts and the close proximity of each exit, my long winded post should have simply implied that at 5.55, the comment may have been more appropriate if it suggested..... We don't NORMALLY need to indicate to leave a mini roundabout. Love the videos!!
Wording on this part of the video is poor. Treat it as a normal roundabout. It’s not the top of a t junction for a reason, that’s why there’s a roundabout there. There are still exits, therefore you indicate when you leave the roundabout.
Not enough time to signal for subsequent exits at mini R/B's (traffic police advanced training endorses this view). You would of course signal left on approach for the 1st exit (even if it's straight on) & right for any subsequent exit more than halfway round - you don't however change to a left signal to leave, but maintain the right till clear of the mini R/B & in your new road. Straight on 2nd exit is no signals at all.
Thank you for this video. It’s very informative 😃 I would like to know, why is not important to indicate when we are going ahead, at a mini roundabout??
When leaving a mini-roundabout there would only be time for the indicators to flash once, so it wouldn't really help anyone else understand what we are doing - as we would have already left the junction by then!
We like to, to confirm what we are doing. Even if there are only pedestrians (that don’t understand the road layout) nearby, it would tell them where we are going. 👍🏼
How should you signal when going straight ahead at a roundabout. I didnt quite get it whilst this question came up as a practice question in my theory test app that I use to practice as preparation for my theory test
May I ask why you say turning right is an ‘always signal’ scenario?. Good observation is a foundation of safe driving and where that observation confirms no other road users present, then no signal is necessary. The term ‘always use’ leads to automatic and unconscious actions and contributes to non focused driving. Not signalling automatically, but being ready to signal where the traffic situation changes, contributes significantly to continual driver awareness. Signalling to pass parked cars (with other traffic in the vicinity) helps promote the Take Use Give method and is also a confirmatory signal further reducing uncertainty. To maintain focused and aware driving, give a signal where it would benefit other road users.
We indicate so anyone nearby can benefit - not just road users. If our signal helps a pedestrian understand that we are driving towards them and that they shouldn’t cross the road then that’s good. Of course we need to observe as well as we can, but we are happy to always signal at junctions just in case it helps someone that was out of our view previously.
+Fatiha Leddad Hi! We are based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk so have no knowledge of the Wood Green area. Maybe ask your driving instructor for extra lessons if you're not feeling confident?
5:16 Isn't it kinda a wasted effort to signal right when all there is to go is about the roundabout and in the end you are going to signal left when taking your exit?
No, we should always indicate right to confirm where we are going. If we didn't, others might wonder if we were going ahead (some roundabout use the right lane to go ahead) or if we are just lazy with our signals. If we cause confusion that might lead to danger so always indicate if it would help others understand our intentions.
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool ahh I see, also if I were going along a road that had more than one lane of traffic and I needed to switch lane would I be able to slow down below the speed limit potentially holding up cars behind in order to switch lanes?
Suppose the car before me is signalling towards right, does it mean he wants me to overtake through right or that he himself is going to change lanes to the right ?
We should only indicate to say what we intend to do. Don’t try and tell others what they should do, as it could cause confusion. The car in front of you was probably saying what they were about to do - so overtaking them might have been dangerous.
Please, Is it mandatory to use the signal indicator when the road is only one way direction? Example you’re on the road and there’s only one direction either to the right or the left?
Our reverse lights show that we intend to back up, and we generally indicate as well to show which way we need to steer. Just imagine you’re the driver or pedestrian behind your car, and do whatever you think is clearest.
Advance Driving School hey got a different question tho, you know when doing the reversing from the bay manoeuvre should you steer when the mirrors are pretty much level with the park line - sorry if this isn’t clear. My instructor said that you can steer way earlier but are you not supposed to treat it as if you have cars on Both sides of hence you’d have to steer much later to avoid hitting the cars. What’s better during an exam if the spaces next to me are free - should I just steer as nothings next to me or do the other thing ?
If the spaces beside you are free, then steer straight away, but when there is a car next to you wait until you are half way out of the bay. So in real life and on the test, just steer when it's safe.
Can someone let me know this: If I'm driving and I want to turn left into a side road (90 degree turning), I know I must signal. However, about a meter to the left of the turning (just before) there is another turning. Do I signal left before the first turning regardless of the fact that I'm turning into the second road and not the first. (The distance is so close, I honestly do not think it will make a difference to the driver behind me because the distance is hardly nothing). OR, do I wait till I'm next to it, bare in mind this will NOT leave me enough time to break softly and will result in a harsh braking. All answers appreciated :)
+island jr We should only indicate when our turning is next, so we don't mislead anyone. In your case I would brake early and gently, as your brake lights will then warn traffic behind you that you are slowing down. Then finally indicate once level with the first turning to confirm that you're about to turn.
We’re not sure it’s worth filming a video about hazard lights - as it would be about 30 seconds long! We should only use them to warn others of danger - such as when we can see an accident ahead, or if we break down and can’t stop in a safe place.
Advance Driving School okay, you’ve cleared up my confusion thank you very much. I was skeptical as to when to use them, since no one has ever actually told me how to use them.

Then finally indicate once level with the first turning to confirm that you're about to turn.
thank you so much! :) The turning is on a main road, so I was sure that the instructor would make me turn down it at some point in the test
Would depend whether anyone was waiting at the 1st turning - but brake lights should be enough normally.
can you do a video about hazard lights? because im confused
My indicators aren't easy to turn off what do i do
What's wrong with them? What difficulty are you having?
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool well when i turn the left indicator off the right will turn on
Ah - you will need to be more gentle when you indicate then. It's a fairly common problem on driving lessons!
8:08 Manoeuvres, not manoeuvers
Yes, we noticed the computer had used the US spelling just after we had uploaded the video - but didn’t feel it was worth correcting... 🙄
Most drivers in our area would not pass a driving test, no one indicates or very few, it is very annoying 😡
I would still signal even if no one is around
What happens if we drive a BMW?
You OWN the road of coarse.... didn`t you know? Especially the cool ones in clapped out 12year+ old models, They get full on diplomatic immunity ;D
The rules still apply.
thanks even you don't now the erea thankyou
Car model please
We always list the car used at the bottom of the video description 🚙👍🏼
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool thanks for your reply
I’m here because I failed my test today yes I made a serious fault but signals were in my minors which I don’t get
It’s easy to get minor faults for indicating too early or too late. This video might help: How To Indicate Precisely ua-cam.com/video/rHDS-S1qXCU/v-deo.html 👍🏼
Ver
You forgot about buses..
Wrong video if you're driving a BMW
Excellent thanks ✨
