Check out this awesome 1972 Gibson Les Paul Recording Guitar with the original Gibson Hard shell Case…the case even has the key with it..Whoa!!
This incredible guitar has tons of player vibe, looks, and sound ...the guitar is Pro Setup and plays just great. The frets are freshly polished and crowned…
It plays great with whisper low action…
All the electronics have been gone over and everything is working on this cool guitar.
    Check those pics..
The serial number date starting with 1 dates this guitar from 1970 to 1975. I was told this one is a 1972…I cannot find any other information to conclude that date, however the earliest dates for the “Harmonica” Gibson bridge is 1972 so I am saying this guitar is dating from 1972 to as late as 1975.
Here's some cool information about the Gibson Les Paul Recording Guitar…
The Les Paul Recording guitar was a replacement for the Les Paul Personal and Les Paul Professional that launched in 1971.
All three Les Paul's were designed to incorporate innovative electronic features, and included by two oblong plastic-covered pickups and a more rounded cutaway horn.
In addition to the phase control found on the Professional and Personal, the Recording added a high/low impedance selector with an internal transistor and did away with the XLR output jack.
This guitar carries the distinction of being the Les Paul of choice of Les Paul himself.
    Years of Production: 1971 - 1980
Body Style: Single cutaway solid body
Wood Composition: Mahogany body, Rosewood fingerboard
Design Elements: Two oblong low-impedance pickups, trapezoid inlays, four control knobs, phase switch, tone selector switch, high/low impedance selector, bound fingerboard, stopbar tailpiece and Tune-o-matic bridge
Finish Specifications: Walnut was the standard finish on the Les Paul Recording.
    Notable Players: Les Paul
This guitar is all original including the case and case key!...
The guitar is in great shape as is the pick guard and tuners.. All the knobs, tailpiece, Bridge, Tailpiece, strap buttons..you name it...all original and in great shape.
Only superficial dings here and there. This guitar is in fabulous shape!
The controls take some getting used to. It has an out of Phase switch that allows in Phase or out of Phase. I believe it works in the middle position. I
t has a 3 way pickup selector switch, tone knobs with 3 settings and another tone knob that works in a couple of the selector settings. A lot of options for tonal settings on this cool guitar. AND, they all work properly!
I even have the original Hard shell Case. Its as nice as the guitar.
Beautiful Gold Plush interior and even the accessory box and Case Key still in the case! Check those pics..
There is nothing that detracts from the big booming sound of this cool guitar...It has super super low action and it sounds HUGE....If you have never heard these Pickups...you are in for a treat...They sound great!!..
It looks good, sounds good, and plays good... it will all be pro-packed by yours truly...I do this a lot and have not had one complaint....
It has a few nicks and scratches as seen in the pics but it is a solid 9 out of 10 Guitar.. But on a cool scale...its an 12 !!!!!!

I've 2 of these from the 70's they are certainly stand out instruments and Les' first choice of all of his available options, his mantre to obtain the cleanest sound possible.

I had one of these and I have to say it is the cleanest sounding guitar ever. I played it through a Marshall 100W head and a cabinet with 4 15's (believe it) and cranked it to 10 with no distortion. The other guitarist in my band plugged his standard LP in and it screamed half way up.

Thanks!! I had one, also. Agree with everything you noticed. Used the Les Paul Recording 1972 for a 1983 studio stint. Still remember Mr Paul praising the guitar, which Was his own axe. Great session. Sorry it took me 7 years to find this precious post. And thanks, LawMan. Sheesh..I'm too ancient. 😢😮😅

For future reference: the best Tone position settings for demoing the pickups individually are 2 and 3. In position 1, as in this video, both pickups are always on regardless of where the pickup selector switch is set, plus there’s an extra fixed cap/resistor tone network in circuit shaping the sound. In position 2 all the knobs and switches are fully active, with no extra tone shaping. (In position 3 the Treble & Bass controls are inactive, otherwise it’s the same as position 2.)
    Very cool guitars. I have a ‘71.

David Kieltyka Hi ! Could you please tell me if your 1971 Les Paul Recording has an ABR bridge ? - later ones had Nashville ( Harmonica ) bridges ( as in the Video ) .
The ABR posts go direct into the Guitar body in usual Les Paul fashion .
Bigsby fitted ones have ABR bridges post 1971 but non Bigsby ones changed to Nashville ones in 1972 .
I also have a 1971 Les Paul Recording , but many claim their one is but it is actually a somewhat later model - Gibson only shipped 236 in 1971 ! I am asking for verification purposes and not implying yours is not a 1971 version .
      Cheers !

My dad had the bass version of this. It was a beast! I lugged and played it for at least a year when i was young (12 yrs old). I wish to god I had a picture of me with it, decked out in my boy scouts uniform, as I would skip scouts and go jam with my band with this thing.

Now this is what I’m looking for in a guitar demo. This is a demo of the guitar the way it sounds, what it can do, how it plays etc, not a demo of effects used or a demo “look how good I can play”. Wish we had more of these demo’s like this. Great guitar by the way in collectors shape.

Saw one of these on a wall at a friends house a few nights ago, and had no idea what it was. Just when you think you know about guitars you find out they made another model you never heard of lol! Anyway, I have never heard a cleaner sounding guitar into a Fender twin in my life. Now I’m on the hunt. It says recording, and I believe every recording studio should have one of these for clean tones. Too bad under 200 exist. The re-issue I have not played, but I heard it’s nothing in comparison. Plus it’s called Les Paul recording II, So it’s not really a re-issue but rather an update. Nice demo!

owning a similar vintage LPR (from new), I _think_ the three-way pickup switch may have been turned around 180° - i.e. what you thought was neck, is actually the bridge, and vice versa. Just the warmth of the "bridge" position in your video makes me think that it's actually the "neck". likewise, the sparkle of the "neck" position feels more like the "bridge" pickup.

I had a 1974 from that year to about 1980. More for recording--as it says--low impedance switch for direct-to-board recording--than live performance. But I loved the variety of sound you could produce from it.

I have one of these from 1973 and love it for Jazz (summertime, all the things you are, georgia on my mind, moonlight in Vermont sort of solos) but it's also good for cleanish pop - quasi strat middle pickup or tele sound. Not the guitar though for Sweet child o mine.

  • @JacBico

If you put the phase switch to "out", it means it's out of phase, which gives the quacky sound. To listen to the normal sound, put the phase switch to "in".

les used the low impedance to go direct into the board because he wanted zero distortion
there are two models this one and the les paul "personal" which was actually more like the one he gigged with , it actually had an input on the upper bout for a gooseneck microphone, the "personal" also wasn't switchblade to high impedance it had to use a special cable with a transformer to change the impedance, the "recording" is great guitar and the switchable impedance is a vast improvement, the "personal" also had a slightly different more rounded cutaway than a normal lp they also made a bass version
they are quirky guitars but they are more like les used himself

I'm a sound guy and it seems that the low impedance setting also would work for the player to hear how the guitar will sound for the audience in a venue without being distracted by the return speakers.
Also, a question. Phaser, Flanger and Chorus are all effects that are gotten by shifting the phase of the soundwaves, do you think Les Paul just got sick of stomping some pedals and put that function inside the guitar to play more confortably?
Either way, great sounding piece, and awesome review! Congrats, Lawman.

    • @eddievhfan1984

I was gonna say, I though Les preferred a super-clean sound, and for the most part didn't bother with effects too much (aside from reverb and his Les-Paulveriser tape loop trick). The phase-inverting switch is more along the lines of allowing the low harmonics and fundamental to cancel when using both pickups together, brightening up the sound considerably (like Brian May of Queen did in a lot in guitar solos such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Killer Queen").
The low-impedance connection is more about plugging straight into the mixing console's low-impedance inputs without having a D.I. box in the way-I believe that there's an XLR out for low-impedance operation in addition to the phono jack for high-impedance output.

    • @jamesgeiger4795
      @jamesgeiger4795 6 років тому +6

They are low impedance humbuckers I believe, Les Paul's own personal design.

    • @hdocburns
      @hdocburns 5 років тому +3

I've owned and use a 1971 Triumph bass, the companion to the Recording guitar, since 1971, and they are Les Paul's own low impedance, stacked humbuckers, the same as he used on his own, (and Mary Ford's), guitars. The 1971 and 72 guitars and basses have a high/low impedance output slide switch. The earlier guitar has a low impedance output.

@@garycoates4987 from the Brochure: "The Les Paul Recording is the only guitar on the market with two humbucking, low impedance pickups. These pickups offer a new concept in tonal response. The pickup height, in relation to the strings, has been carefully adjusted to produce maximum performance. Maintain the factory adjusted string setting for best results"
see www.vintageguitarandbass.com/gibson/catalogues/1971_recording_2.php for the image of the brochure saying this - second column under the image, paragraph marked "Low Impedance Pickups".
Also, I have a 73/74 (the pots have 1973 date codes, but I bought it in late 1974 in Australia) LPR - it cost just over $700, which at the time, the AUD and the USD were pretty much 1:1. I have replaced the case handle - the original was plastic (what!?) with a leather handle, and as the guitar is starting to get old, I moved the output jack to the edge of the body (similar to 'traditional' Les Paul location) to avoid cracking the hard-to-get (and getting old and brittle) switch-plate. It has some buckle-rash on the back (I was 13 when I bought it - didn't know any better), and a ding in the front where a microphone stand fell on it - didn't penetrate the nitro though.
Dang it's heavy on these 59yo shoulders though!

I had one of these, later a "The Paul" plain jane version that was a perfect work guitar & also acquired a Chinese Epiphone
Les Paul that would also be a good work guitar if the fret ends were filed smooth. By work guitar I mean one suitable for
sitting in the trunk when it's -20 & being dragged inside to condense moisture, be knocked over, banged up & to have
drinks spilled on it by drunks at the neighborhood bar jam session ... & to make money & take it all in stride.

  • @greatreset3

I had to Les Paul personal 1969 low impedance pickups for low impedance give that Transformer to convert the output impedance they're still not high output which is why I sold it cuz I wanted to play rock music not jazz. The phase switch has nothing to do with the phase shifter it's goes to pick up salad buffets like position 2 and 4 on a Stratocaster.
