- It's episode 378 and this week's theme is: butter! First Em takes us to Flint, Michigan for the hauntings of the Capitol Theater (plus a fun little sidebar on photoplays). Then Christine covers the truly shocking case of Cari Lea Farver. And are you the Kirk of your county? ...and that's why we drink!
Don't miss out on pre-ordering our new book! bit.ly/hranextstop
Great retelling Christine. I was on the edge of my seat.
Butternanas got me
Random but Glass Animals always play the COOLEST places!
As a fellow Michigander, please come!!!
ohmygosh I love Tony, hero of the story
The pre-story intro discussion (because it’s too early and I can’t think of what it’s actually called) was very interesting, and kinda deep, this week. I approve!
Ps: I like going to the movies sometimes to see live broadcasts of plays and operas that are happening at the Metropolitan Opera. That’s a pretty cool experience
I agree! That is my favorite part. The "Why do you drink?" part often turns into very intriguing conversations.
11 on the likes 32 minutes in! I miss these days. Can't wait to get the second book and finally see you one tour. Ps come to Raleigh NC
I’ve had a really weird and kind of sad day, so after a hard night of work, seeing ATWWD popping up on my homepage really felt like a hug. It normally does anyway, but especially today. Thank you guys so much 💕💕💕
Xtine: Leona choosing one favorite color for each relative!! My oldest niece was the same way about names for people, so there was only one “Aunt” and “uncle,” so my sister was “Uncle Dee Dee” 😆
Shout out to the Louisville Palace, yay!! It’s absolutely stunning. I’ve been to events there and seen movies, concerts, and shows. Just breathtaking. (Btw Em nailed the pronunciation of “Louisville” 🙌🏻) Also, my sister and I were obsessed with the Mary Martin Peter Pan. We had it taped from TV, so that must have been the 1989 broadcast.
As to Christine's story, I had a situation in college where one dude was over and another dude came by. It was EARLY in the morning (like 5:00 am) and the new dude was staying over for the first time. The on-again, off-again boyfriend came by the apartment after he got off work at 7-11. No idea why he thought that was cool. I tried to get rid of him, but he would not leave. I HAD to answer the door because he kept knocking and knocking and was waking up my THREE roommates. When old dude wouldn't leave, it got a bit heated and new dude came out to tell him to get lost. There was a bit of a scuffle, blows were exchanged. old dude finally left. It was not great.
the only good part of my long work week and working overnight on saturday is that i’m one of the first to listen to the ep’s
It would be soooo wonderful as young humans if we were given affirmation for experiencing joy no matter what that joy comes from 💖
I loved it when Em figured out the twist in Christine's story!!!!!!! That doc on Netflix was WILD and so sad for Cari and her family!
Bummed we didn’t get to see Em’s face when they realized. 🤯
Christine's story is the first time I've audibly gasped and said "NO!" when she got to the twist. Wow, Christine really nailed it with this one. She's always a great storyteller but this one really got me!
Em probably grew up watching the 2000 taping of Peter Pan starring Cathy Rigby. Cathy played Peter for over 30 years and was alwayssss on tour in the 2000s. She most recently played Peter in 2015 when she was in her 60s!
Soylent must equal soylent green. "Soylent green is people " lmfao Tony's joke
Listening to the intro this morning & the discussion about color & clothing. My youngest brother was born genetically female. When he was very young he loved wearing frilly dresses & and had super long hair. The dresses & hair faded by the end of elementary school. Also, the color thing in my family we all love purple. Doesn't matter gender around here. My mom, me, my sons, my nephew. My daughter loves yellow.
What does brown mean?
I LOVE the longer episodes 🎉
When my nephew was a bit younger. Everyone's favorite color was orange bc its his. And as far as I know he still loves that color. 😊
I loved the Peter pan show. Pretty sure my parents still have the vcr tape of it 😅
I'm so excited 🎉❤😊
Please come to the capital theater!!! Me and and least 10 of my friends will be there!!! 🎉
Kirk!! My fav stars hollow townie 😂😂❤
The Kalamazoo State Theater in my hometown of Kalamazoo is one of John Eberson's theaters!. It's also hella haunted.
The ending got cut off in the Spotify. Had to come finish the episode here. Such a good podcast.❤ my absolute favorite.
"Ten Cent Sheds" sounds like an awesome Indie band lol 🤘😎🤘
second week in a row i’ve been up and been one of the first comments. so proud to be here!
This ep made me want some butterscotch
I'm pre ordered. Very excited!
My paternal grandmothers entire family (7 siblings) are Butterworths! From Kentucky.
There’s also a haunted Capitol Theatre in Moncton NB, Canada!
Hello from Alaska!!
Hello also from Alaska.
My favorite name that you two have come up with is "Owlameda Hootinannie" js 😉
You both did an amazing job. So glad they caught the real person! Yikes!
Tony is a homie. And soylent is bomb for nutrients your body craves
This was an edge of my seat episode. The way my jaw dropped. Thank you for this gem
I'm Definitely gonna need as many reminders to drink water as I can get this upcoming week... ☀️♨️💊🥵😅
OMG I WATCHED THAT PETER PAN GROWING UP TOO!!! That's instantly where my mind went when Em described the photo play!
Edit: JK it was a different, more modern (early 2000s) version that I think my grandma recorded on the VCR from her TV.
As a Council Bluffs Iowan i was so excited when Christine said Iowa Western! I’ve been wanting you guys to cover this case for so long!
I love yalls videos im not This far on Spotify but im close im on ep 290 keep up the good work
Idk about colors but when my daughter was like 18 months and found out her dress had pockets she was so happy thats definitely nature
Y’all with that dating scenario are stressing me out!!! The girl who just stops by needs to leave, you have company. 💁🏽♀️
Me screaming HIS NAME IS KIRK!
Or the Ray of Schitt’s Creek!
If you’re still little (aka under 30), please google Soylent and Soylent Green. Silicone Vally is a trip.
Yas
Omg. I knew it. I won’t spoil it for anyone else, but I had a fucking feeling this was what was going on.
25:52 i grew up going to events at a theater like this and it was SO magical as a kid i was like are you fucking kidding
The Louisville Palace is an absolute work of art! When I go to concerts there I feel so elegant and fancy😊 I did see THE QUEENS: Diana Ross and Wynonna Judd there❤
I have a tattoo based off the Mary Martin Peter Pan. I also grew up watching that.
The craziest thing is when I was listening to xtines story and the moment came in where hunnie no1 was at the house and hunnie no2 was coming over I was like oh no Liz is gonna torment this poor girl and then I was like oh god sorry Liz didn’t realise you were gonna be a the victim oH NEVER MIND LIZ WTF
I found my representation in volunteer IT guy, Tony. This is also how I describe myself. Except he’s much smarter. I’m just very transparent about being a little weirdo
yaaay!
So Allison knows that in another life time you and Trent were best friends. 🤣
I had the strongest sense of dejavu listening to this story. Eve the part where em says “ that’s some good story telling Christine.” So much so that when it was over I was sure I was going to see that somehow I started listening to an older episode. Now I need to go see if wine and crime covered it and I somehow mind melded the story tellers.
I had this same thought ???
Kirk ! 1:47:21
Fun fact! Color and gender preferences are purely societal. Before the Victorian era, the stereotypical blue for boys and pink for girls was reversed - blue was for girls because it symbolized Venus, and pink was the color of diluted blood for masculine little boys. It has changed over the years based on fashion and society and has nothing to do with the biology you're born with ❤️
ETA lol I paused the video to type this RIGHT before Em mentioned this literal thing whoops
1:35:50 this whole situation is absolute popcorn 😂
As someone with the last name Butterworth, it was wild to hear my own last name
I'm relistening with my husband, and I just realized that probably Liz was already spying Dave the first time he took Cari to his place😮
How else did she arrive with such good timing?
Omg the Peter Pan photo play! That’s the first play I ever watched! My dad rented it from the video store to show me 🫣
Em can you please please please please please cover the men in black !?!?! I’ve sent my request through yalls site but nothing yet !! I really would love you to cover it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can’t believe we didn’t get to hear about Christine’s appointment with a psychic in the beginning!! I wanna know who she’s seeing omg
I had a dream not long ago that my parents got a new dog and I named him butterball 😳
OK, I’m an hour and nine minutes out. My Spidey senses are tingling. Was it him the whole time sending those messages is he a murderer? I wonder how this turns out but that’s my guess so far….
While Christine and Em are talking about the situation with honey number one and honey number two if I’m the one that’s in the house hiding after all is said and done I’m gonna politely ask if I can leave because now I’m extremely nervous that somethings gonna happen to me because I listen to too many true crime podcast and I’m not trying to get murdered…..
This reminds me of when Daniel White killed Harvey Milk and the justice system entertained the theory that eating junk food triggered his bipolar. Mental illness stigma has such a massive sway on investigations and trials. Sometimes its helpful for context, but often it really muddles things.
i’m sorry but if i were liz this story would’ve flipped into john mf wick
oh… well this aged quickly and poorly…
I'm she/they and growing up female, I've always HATED pink and frilly and princess stuff. I still hate it tbh
I loved the episode, but can you please give us a trigger warning next time for animals deaths?
