- It's episode 374 and are technical issues bringing us closer together? We're so sorry, UA-cam Boozers and Shakers, for the lag (we edited the audio separately so you won't hear the same overlapping issues there). We're making up for it with a new Compliment Christine segment. This week Em takes us way, way back to the origins and dark side of nursery rhymes. Then Christine covers the more recent Polish case of Krystian Bala. And has Em just dubbed Christine the "Princess of Pronouns"? ...and that's why we drink!
We wrote a second book! Pre-orders are open and super important for our ratings so treat yourself to our second spooky travel compendium, A Haunted Road Atlas: Next Stop here - bit.ly/HRANextStop
In response to Christine's Segment: It pains me, sometimes, to see the lengths ATWWD goes to in order to be as respectful and responsive to everyone, in particular their audience, in order to make everyone feel included as well as seen and heard. Over the years, I've seen them readily correct any missteps and admit when they may have inevitably gotten something wrong. And yet, it never ends. While there are people who have entirely valid criticisms/feedback and should feel empowered to speak up, there are also many who will project their own issues and try to somehow make them ATWWD's problem.
I learned long ago that when you bend over backwards too far for far too long, you'll end up injuring yourself the most.
It's vividly CLEAR how hard Christine and Em work to do their best by their audience. They can't please everyone all the time, on every issue, in every way. I listen to a lot of podcasts (and indie political shows) and I've never posted a comment in defense of the hosts. I'm doing so now because although there are plenty of good humans hosting podcasts in the true crime community, in my humble estimation, these two are the most consistent at actively showing how much they care. They're beautiful examples of what it looks and sounds like to be deeply in touch with one's own humanity.
P.S. Box Of Oddities, it occurs to me now, stand alongside ATWWD in their level of respect, integrity, and kick-ass character.
Free Palestine, Ceasefire Now
I tend to feel like nobody should be complaining (unrealistic, I'm aware), of the content of this show, or Beach too Sandy). My reason being that in all the years I've been listening, I've seen that these are very good people who don't intend to harm others in any way. I understand being upset about malicious intent. However, that's never been a part of these shows. Maybe that's just my protective, motherly side. ♡♡
Everyone here does their best to be kind and inclusive. And its really hard when someone's intention is good, but it impacts someone in a way you didnt imagine you could impact others. Normalize pronouns ❤
Very well said
I think that's what annoys me. People don't want to account for intentions. I see it happen all the time "Yikes they shouldn't say this" "they meant well but- yikess" it's so- I wanna call it entitlement honestly. It's this entitlement of "I'm better than them" that so many people hold as if they're immune to doing the wrong thing or coming accross the wrong way. The difference people don't seem to get is that their lives aren't filmed, while many content creators are. I'm sure if we saw the lives of most of these people trying to "call them out" on things, they'd be at least the same amount of mistaken and wrong at times, if not, more. They're so entitled thinking they're immune to being misunderstood or making a mistake and get such an uppity and virtue signaling air about them it drives me insane.
@@L33W1NT3R5 Yes Please!! I live in a very rural area where people sling around some depressingly derogative terms on the reg. I've never heard anyone bring up pronouns, I suspect the subject is likely unfamiliar to them. I think Christine is right when she spoke about just how normal it *should* be to discuss pronouns and that she doesn't mean to be flippant or disrespectful when she references them.
You can't please everyone and you can drive yourself nuts trying. Grace. People need to practice grace.
seriously!!
From a she/they, I always appreciate your lightheartedness about pronouns while talking about their importance. It’s normalizing them, and that is how you are expressing your own pronouns. What a weird complaint.
Xtine, keep doing pronouns the way you’re doing them. Some people make problems where there don’t need to be any. ❤
Oh my gosh, y’all are so respectful of other people’s thoughts, identities, and cultures. We are all learning. If you’re trying, you’re making mistakes. And it’s ok.
❤❤❤
Saying she her shiefer wasn't even a mistake lmao people are way too sensitive
Eating Doritos, playing the sims and watching a new episode of ATWWD. Life is good.
It's a beautiful thing to find joy in small pleasures. It's a gift, really, to be someone who is so easily pleased. (and an emotional strength!) It reminds me of one of my favorite books, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn by Betty Smith.
Today is my birthday and I’m completely alone but I don’t feel it when I listen to you guys. Since I found your podcast it’s become the thing I go to to soothe my anxiety and distract my mind. Much love ATWWD ❤
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!! 🥳💞 sending you extra love and celebration from the whole ATWWD team!
Happy birthday! I hope you’ve had a nice day!
@@ATWWDPodcast Thank you! This literally made my day 🥹
@@FreakingFerret Thank you! It was lovely
Happpppppy birthday, sugarbuns!! I'm alone, as well. You're alone, I'm alone... hey! We're not actually alone at all. As long as I'm out here and still breathing, you're never by your lonesome! Deal? 💕💕
Em is breaking so much mental glass in my head rn 😵 "They use to say WHAT?!" "Thats what that means?!"
Christine, don't sweat it. Some people are just professional victims looking for a reason to be offended and cancel someone in every interaction they have.
Not to be that person…but I have a huperfocus in womens fashion history. Lucy Locket is about literal pockets. 17th century pockets were a separate garmet. They look like a flat bag with a ribbon to tie around your waist. If it gets cut or untied, then you can lose your pockets. So Lucy’s pockets became untied, she lost it, Kitty found it totally empty thus “with nothing but the ribbons around it”…in conclusion womens pockets use to massive. Lets start a movement to bring back womens pockets! (Look them up, they’re really cute)
There is a difference between taking something seriously and taking it somberly.
Y'all *clearly* take pronouns seriously, which is good and important and exactly as it should be.
You don't also have to take them somberly. If we took everything somberly that we had to take seriously we'd all go nuts. And y'all are comedians, for crying out loud. Besides, having fun with things helps normalize them, doesn't it? You can't find be scared/mad about something if it's cute and giving you gigglefits.
That y'all's names rhyme with your pronouns is very fun. Please continue to have fun with it.
YES this is the perfect way to explain it.
I love the nursery rhyme segment this week. I was born in England and my favorite book as a child was a book of nursery rhymes. I still have it, held together by duct tape, and now I’m tempted to dig it out of storage.
Emothy themothy.
Just bc one person is put off on the pronouns thing but it doesn’t bother anyone else and you know you don’t mean it in any negative way way I agree with giving yourself grace.
The person who’s complaining about the pronouns are in the wrong. We should be open about it and you’re not mocking them.
Been sick as a dog since Friday, tiktok had been my main solice and tonight Ems lovely tales of nursery rhymes have gotten me in the perfect mood for sleep. I just got to where they find the body and it’s tied up in Xtines story and I think I’m gonna have this for the morning 😅 love yall , be back later 🫡
You both/the team go to huge lengths to be inclusive and I love how you dont 'preach' about issues. Its all done with class imo. Ive learned so much since ive been a listener. Keep it up! 🏴🇬🇧
At this point, if someone is upset over a stranger making a lighthearted joke about something that isn't really that big a deal, perhaps the someone is the problem. Making fun of stuff is part of life. I make fun of things I love all the time. I make fun of myself the most. We all need to chill a bit.
Both nursery rhymes have the mulberry bush in them, so interesting, i have no idea what a mulberry is hahah
I absolutely used to be one of those kids de-limbing spiders and now I'm a huge animal advocate so I'm glad I turned that around
I recall the lady bird rhyme actually saying and your children will burn 😅 I can’t recall why I know some of these bc I’m pretty positive my mom wouldn’t have been the one to teach me
The people who have these complaints are annoying, period.
In regards to what Christine was talking about in the beginning of the episode. People will always find something to be offended by now a days. It’s RIDICULOUS!
And usually its coming from people who have the least to legitimately contribute. They don't have self value so they just identify someone who's "oppressing" them, then they don't have to be productive or prosperous because they're too busy filling the role of "victim".
Why does Christine look extra extra pretty today and I know I’m asking this in the very beginning of the show lol and it’s probably answered but I still wanted to put this out on the universe. Christine Face looks extra beautiful today!! Don’t worry I’m saying this as a gay guy. I’m not a creepy old straight man lol…
she never wears her hair up. She looks so pretty!!
Goosy Goosy Gander was my tooth brushing song as a child. I always felt bad for the old man.
Hey hey, the ring around a roses rhyme has always been sneezing rather than ashes with me, I'm 37 (recently 🤢) and Scottish, havnt heard the ashes til recently. I screamed Mary Queen of Scots at the next one 😂😂 loved this episode ☺️
Mary I and Mary Queen of Scots are not the same person...One was the older sister of Elizabeth I and one was the rival who was eventually beheaded on Elizabeth's order (for colluding with Catholics who wanted to assassinate Elizabeth). Ring around the Rosie was always atishoo for me too...didn't hear the ashes version until we moved to North America (originally from northern England)
@@cmk7278 my mistake...James and Henry are different folk 😂however, Mary Queen of Scots is possibly the Mary in the rhyme rather than the Mary described in podcast
❤❤❤❤ sending you all love and positive vibes
“Malicious? Or delicious?” How about maliciously delicious?!
I miss Creeps with Christine. I understand that there are only so many hours in a day, though, and there are so few free ones when you're a parent. I'm loving this nursery rhyme portion. ♡ PS- what's the best program for learning German?
WOOOOOOOW. Chris sounds like my grandfather.
Also, in "Lucy Locket" - Pockets used to be a separate layer of clothing tied between the petticoats and the over skirts, so it was common for women to lose their pockets because they'd fall off! It's a double entendre about losing a john and the money he brought!
I can’t remember why but my friend and I looked up the rubadubdub rhyme a couple days ago, apparently “rubadubdub” is basically just “tsk tsk tsk” so we have added that to our vocabulary! I loved this episode theme.
Also as a non binary person I have literally no issue with she/her schiefer and think a fellow queer person should be able to have fun with pronouns and normalize talking about them/using them 💖 I love and appreciate how conscientious you both are and think you’ve done a great job with your platform. I’ve been listening since around episode 20 and have grown and learned with y’all and appreciate all the hard work y’all do. Keep it up, much love for you all 💖
I always assumed that breaking ones crown was to break ones title/pride/position in society. Like be careful of climbing the hill too high (following pride to accomplish too much), and careful if you're following someone up that hill, as you'll come tumbling down after them. A lesson on humility and following the wrong person/not going your own path.
Minor fun fact about bumping heads! When my dad fell down the stairs and was in a coma for a week with a brain injury (he's totally fine now) he was knocked out cold, and was SNORING but sure enough if he didn't receive hospital care he likely would have died!
As long as you’re not malicious in making pronoun and gender jokes (such as “well I’m an attack helicopter”) you’re completely fine! Making jokes about that stuff helps normalize it and being somber about them just scares ppl away! As an any pronoun myself I saw no harm in your silly joke and found it endearing. It’s you expressing yourself and you’re on a very inclusive comedy show! Some ppl just need to read the room honestly
Is the audio not synched up between you two today?? I feel like Christine is replying like a millisecond too early to Em. Am I going crazy? haha Noticed this around the 50 min mark. Love you both!
I also noticed that!
yes there is a bit of lag in the recording, they mentioned it in the description!
There’s a new show out about George actually on starz called Mary and George that just came out in the US 👀
As someone who is part Polish with a Polish last name (that no one has ever pronounced correctly) Christine as least TRYING to pronounce polish names correctly is good enough 👏
just here to share a fun fact of my own: in regards to the Agatha Christie comment, the book is "And Then There Were None" and the rhyme was changed to "10 Little Soldier Boys"
also, if you sang any of the songs as a kid or to your kids, don't beat yourself up. just do your best to learn and move on. ❤
No matter what you do, you can’t please everyone. Some people really be quick to become triggered or cancel others, like be real.
Every time someone says "The Muffin Man" now I think of the Gingerbread Man from Shrek and giggle to myself.
Just a reminder that npd is treatable and someone with it can still live a good life with healthy relationships. Psychotherapy is usually the best treatment but mood stabilizers may also help. Not everyone needs treatment though bc some ppl were able to figure out coping mechanisms on their own while growing up.
I always heard ring around the roses was about Pompeii
Grew up in elementary school in the early 80’s and our school had tons of daddy long legs that crawled on the walls. At recess pulling their legs off was definitely a things kid did. (Not me, I actually like spiders) Didn’t know that was a “thing” outside of the kids in my school. Crazy!
Cracked in to my very first LD, that's what I'm drinking today 😉
A can of LD saved my life once Lol! 😅💦💀
Okay question are em and Christine’s audios off a little? It seems like Christine is a little ahead of em like we’re getting her responses a little faster than normal even before em has finished their thought? Could also be me still half asleep😂 regardless, love the ep homies!
Yes we had some technical issues with this episode so occasionally the audio is a little funky! ❤
There was a glitch in the recording- they mentioned that in the description!
@@screenspeak oops didn’t see that in the description, thanks so much!
It’s no lemon poppyseed, it’s a nooks and crannies situation 😂😂😂😂💀
You should do some UA-cam exclusive to get that last 30k
anyone know the name of the book Christine mentioned.
People are trying to make you feel bad which is so sad. You made a cute rhyme out of a pronoun SHAME on that person. They know what they’re doing. They’re bullying you on purpose
Normalize saying
I’m sorry what I said hurt you. It was not my intention. However, respectfully I feel differently than you.
Someone really got mad at that?😭 so annoying
Can you guys fix the audio? Seems like they are talking over one another a lot.
There was a glitch in the recording- they mentioned that in the description!
If you're not going to say the word on your podcast because it's an informational story then don't bring it up. Seriously I would be interested because I never heard any of these things but now I have to Google what it used to be called because you won't say it.
