  • It's episode 374 and are technical issues bringing us closer together? We're so sorry, UA-cam Boozers and Shakers, for the lag (we edited the audio separately so you won't hear the same overlapping issues there). We're making up for it with a new Compliment Christine segment. This week Em takes us way, way back to the origins and dark side of nursery rhymes. Then Christine covers the more recent Polish case of Krystian Bala. And has Em just dubbed Christine the "Princess of Pronouns"? ...and that's why we drink!
We wrote a second book! Pre-orders are open and super important for our ratings so treat yourself to our second spooky travel compendium, A Haunted Road Atlas: Next Stop here - bit.ly/HRANextStop

In response to Christine's Segment: It pains me, sometimes, to see the lengths ATWWD goes to in order to be as respectful and responsive to everyone, in particular their audience, in order to make everyone feel included as well as seen and heard. Over the years, I've seen them readily correct any missteps and admit when they may have inevitably gotten something wrong. And yet, it never ends. While there are people who have entirely valid criticisms/feedback and should feel empowered to speak up, there are also many who will project their own issues and try to somehow make them ATWWD's problem.
I learned long ago that when you bend over backwards too far for far too long, you'll end up injuring yourself the most.
It's vividly CLEAR how hard Christine and Em work to do their best by their audience. They can't please everyone all the time, on every issue, in every way. I listen to a lot of podcasts (and indie political shows) and I've never posted a comment in defense of the hosts. I'm doing so now because although there are plenty of good humans hosting podcasts in the true crime community, in my humble estimation, these two are the most consistent at actively showing how much they care. They're beautiful examples of what it looks and sounds like to be deeply in touch with one's own humanity.
P.S. Box Of Oddities, it occurs to me now, stand alongside ATWWD in their level of respect, integrity, and kick-ass character.

I tend to feel like nobody should be complaining (unrealistic, I'm aware), of the content of this show, or Beach too Sandy). My reason being that in all the years I've been listening, I've seen that these are very good people who don't intend to harm others in any way. I understand being upset about malicious intent. However, that's never been a part of these shows. Maybe that's just my protective, motherly side. ♡♡

I think that's what annoys me. People don't want to account for intentions. I see it happen all the time "Yikes they shouldn't say this" "they meant well but- yikess" it's so- I wanna call it entitlement honestly. It's this entitlement of "I'm better than them" that so many people hold as if they're immune to doing the wrong thing or coming accross the wrong way. The difference people don't seem to get is that their lives aren't filmed, while many content creators are. I'm sure if we saw the lives of most of these people trying to "call them out" on things, they'd be at least the same amount of mistaken and wrong at times, if not, more. They're so entitled thinking they're immune to being misunderstood or making a mistake and get such an uppity and virtue signaling air about them it drives me insane.

@@L33W1NT3R5 Yes Please!! I live in a very rural area where people sling around some depressingly derogative terms on the reg. I've never heard anyone bring up pronouns, I suspect the subject is likely unfamiliar to them. I think Christine is right when she spoke about just how normal it *should* be to discuss pronouns and that she doesn't mean to be flippant or disrespectful when she references them.

Not to be that person…but I have a huperfocus in womens fashion history. Lucy Locket is about literal pockets. 17th century pockets were a separate garmet. They look like a flat bag with a ribbon to tie around your waist. If it gets cut or untied, then you can lose your pockets. So Lucy’s pockets became untied, she lost it, Kitty found it totally empty thus “with nothing but the ribbons around it”…in conclusion womens pockets use to massive. Lets start a movement to bring back womens pockets! (Look them up, they’re really cute)

There is a difference between taking something seriously and taking it somberly.
Y'all *clearly* take pronouns seriously, which is good and important and exactly as it should be.
You don't also have to take them somberly. If we took everything somberly that we had to take seriously we'd all go nuts. And y'all are comedians, for crying out loud. Besides, having fun with things helps normalize them, doesn't it? You can't find be scared/mad about something if it's cute and giving you gigglefits.
That y'all's names rhyme with your pronouns is very fun. Please continue to have fun with it.

Also, in "Lucy Locket" - Pockets used to be a separate layer of clothing tied between the petticoats and the over skirts, so it was common for women to lose their pockets because they'd fall off! It's a double entendre about losing a john and the money he brought!

Also as a non binary person I have literally no issue with she/her schiefer and think a fellow queer person should be able to have fun with pronouns and normalize talking about them/using them 💖 I love and appreciate how conscientious you both are and think you’ve done a great job with your platform. I always assumed that breaking ones crown was to break ones title/pride/position in society. Like be careful of climbing the hill too high (following pride to accomplish too much), and careful if you're following someone up that hill, as you'll come tumbling down after them. A lesson on humility and following the wrong person/not going your own path.
