They didn’t lose the crowd. With the Sphere technology it tends to risk over shadow the band’s talent. Making the event all about the video display and not the music. It was nice that they dumbed it down a bit and let the audience connect with the band only. Then when the video came on it was even better. All good shows are like a roller coaster.

I’m a diehard and my favorite songs( listening to livestream/watching videos) were So Cruel/Acrobat/Ultraviolet/Love is Blindness!
I totally get what you are saying about the hits.
Yes, there’s nowhere for him to run! Stage is small, no runway, no small stage. He sweats massively during every tour. People are comparing him to all the previous tours.
They always play about 2 hours.

I'm not a diehard but I love U2 and there music, I'm 56, I grew up with them. Bono's voice is strong as ever and can still belt out his music. But his lower sense of mobility came after a bike accident in Nov 2013 in NYC where he broke 7 bones and fractured his eye socket. He once said in a BBC interview "I feel I may never be able to play the guitar again".

This was the perfect band, album, and concept to open this venue. If you're not familiar with Achtung Baby and ZooTV, the concept will be lost on you, as the tour for that album, in the early 90's, was extremely innovative. I'm looking forward to the show and the interactive experience, and hearing the entire Achtung Baby album. They've done this before where they toured for the Joshua Tree album a few years ago.

This was a great experience. Hands down a 10/10. I was on the floor opening night and the crowd was great. I didn’t notice the crowd being out of touch. There were 98% diehard fans the rest were their kids who didn’t know them well. I think it was a great night and a huge win for the band.

@@vkuperman I was maybe 5-7 “rows” from the stage which was great but I went back towards the divider to rest my back and the view of the screen was better. I think the secret best spot might be the 300 level. If you want to appreciate the visual effects. I spoke with people who told me they were in the 200 level and it was good but the further back you get obstructed from the 300 level blocking the view of the screen at the top. I know long winded but if you haven’t gone yet and gotten tix I hope this helps.

Great review. The whole point of featuring Achtung, Baby was the anniversary of that album. That was also the album where they stretched the boundaries of visual experience on their tour supporting it back in the day. Bono said in their interview with CBS that it was fitting that this tour was a new step in visual experience that was similar to that original tour for that album. Great video!

I went on Sunday night Oct 8th. (concert #5 I believe). It was unreal. My 12th time seeing U2. They are my favourite band of all time. I was apprehensive that the sphere would overshadow the band. This concert surpassed my expectations. It was life changing. Setlist was perfection, band was perfection. The visuals only added to that, but at the same time it felt intimate because of the energy and emotion that Bono gives. This has taken over top place of my favourite concert ever. Bono sounded better than he ever has. Having said all that, the overhang SUCKS. Why would they design such a building to focus on the screen, and then block off the screen for rows 22 and above? And sell overhang tickets at a premium? Bad move on the sphere's and live nation's part. Definitely avoid the 100 sections in the higher rows., but if you get the chance to see this concert, just go!

I could not agree more. Enough with the 80's hits. they did the JT revival already. I mean, I loved them in the 80's but they peaked in the 90's. Their best decade. Although I have been a fan since the early 80's, I only listen to their 90's stuff these days. So I hope that they will skip most of their 80's hits in favour of Zooropa and pop tracks and more 90's album B side tracks to replace their hits. I know it won't happen but still..

Your welcome Joe I found your review honest and informative. I grew up in Ireland with U2 so am slightly bias and a big fan but not a blind one. I love music all types and will listen to most and give it a listen. Musicians are gifted people and deserve to be appreciated more as they feed our soul and to experience live music is an essential part of living and can heal & change the world. I love the new concert venue The Sphere and I agree it’s a game changer I have followed it’s development from when information on it appeared in the media. I hope to get to visit it whenever I get to revisit Las Vegas which I was only in once for a long weekend back in around 2000 as a guest of an industry provider. I wish the venue all the best for the future depending on what artists appear and other events they hold there I hope that it gets into a profitable situation in a period short enough to allow them to continue. I know an accountant would have never allowed it be built but an artist and history maker would and did. I compare it to one of the new wonders of the World hats off to all concerned. In Hamburg Germany they build a new concert hall for their orchestra and it’s exactly a game changer and an architectural new wonder of the World and also a project that had huge over spends but got built and opened. Those that can afford to be entertained need to support these new venues to experience live music of all types and the multi genre of technology that is improving the experience into the future. U2 were brave I feel to be the first at the new venue but they have made it and this is like a rebirth for them. The energy will come I know the day before the opening night Bono was not happy with the rehearsal, all new venues have issues which they learn from and improve the more they use them. The Sphere is the future here and now. U2 will always be know as a Global Band of 4 boys from Dublin , the Irish are there greatest critics but we still love them and are very proud of what they have achieved but maybe don’t like to tell them particularly Bono as we find his head is big enough. I am glad he didn’t use the event to push his causes he is getting on like all of us and I think politics needs to be left to the next generation now he has done more than his bit. I wish all concerned with The Sphere every success long into the future and I agree there should be at least one on every continent in the World to allow the audience’s experience the game changer in live entertainment. Live It Love It Like It 💪🇮🇪🇪🇸🇪🇺🇺🇸❤️😎 D

I've watched several of these video's three times now....at least 80 different minutes of the new Sphere with U2. The first time I watched the first one I was blown away;....amazing. Each time I watched them again, I was less impressed....not about what I was seeing because it is an impressive achievement, but because of what I like about concerts....and that is watching the band, the musicians! At 79 years old, that will never change. I was a drummer for a long time. Like you Joe, I love going to concerts and want to get as close to the band as I can. Watching the musicians is as important to me as listening to them. I wouldn't pay an arm and a leg to watch a concert where the band is lost in the graphics. I wouldn't go to the sphere after watching these video's because any band will be lost in that postage stamp style stage. I saw U2 live in 2006 in Honolulu...they were awesome.....I'd pay to see them again.....in a normal venue....not in this place. I wouldn't pay to see anybody in the Sphere....unless the price was normal and I was less than 100 feet from the stage so I could watch the reason I went.....to see the band. I wish the developers the best.

Thanks for that great review. I've been with U2 since they came from Ireland. So soooo many great shows and being this is the anniversary of Auchtung Baby and all that, I'll get to my point.
I had cataract surgery on my eyes, I was left with severe retinal damage. I don't see colors correctly, I see contrasting colors, which makes me very confused and I'm legally blind. Besides needing a babysitter technically to get me through airports and then to a seat, I'm sad that seeing this show would be such a challenge for me to even sit through with all the sensory overload.
Remember, retinas are connected to your brain. I've begged people to come with me, I'd pay for everything, but in my world these days, U2 isn't anyone's cup of tea, since it's mostly younger people who would have the ability to bring me. I think just for anyone to be in that Sphere no matter who is there would be great. I tried to "watch" it on my TV and it was hard to take in. They lost me around the acoustic parts though.
I would like to put an even stronger hex on the Dr who fucked up my eyes and never had to be accountable. I feel like I had to be there for this show.
Unfortunately, I have to pass but thanks to all who have reviewed this and to those who made videos of this show that I was at least be able to at listen to them again.
    Thanks everyone! 😢❤

Great review! I’m sure in person it’s such a great experience. For me after watching the videos, I feel the screen problems are the main issue. Bono looks better than he has in recent years and looks up to the task. Some songs are a little obscure but they are good songs. Like with Vertigo, I don’t know why they chose to not use the red trippy imagery that they usually use. What a missed opportunity. Did they even show the baby inside? And also the band has to be shown a little more on the screen. I like the no politics and philanthropy, that’s refreshing. All in all I think they are going to quickly fix the little problems. Should be fun to see. Regardless, love U2, and it’s only gonna get better.

Saw the show on 10/5. It was amazing and I was grateful to have gotten tickets for opening week. Really great song choices - with the knowledge up front that we know it was going to be based on Achtung Baby. I've seen U2 play live in five decades - the 80s, 90s, 00, 10s, and now the 20s. This was the best show since Joshua Tree. All the best songs off Achtung Baby, plus many of their key hits from earlier and later albums. I would have enjoyed them finding a way to get Bullet the Blue Sky in there, but at a certain point there is a limited amount of time to work with and choices have to be made. Plenty of other early hits didn't make the cut either, but I thought that would have been a good one. Vertigo, Elevation, and Beautiful Day were excellent choices from the later catalog. The visuals were fantastic and the band did a great job. I hope I'm still rocking out when I'm their age... which leads me to the important question: how did all those old people get into the concert? Especially the one I keep seeing in the mirror? Also, the new drummer was great and Bono's comments about Larry were perfect. That even three of the four of them are still doing this 40+ years later says a lot. I wouldn't spend the money I spent on these tickets again, but I'd go again if I could.

    MY LETTER TO U2-1987
I saw you guys on the Joshua Tree tour in 1987 at MTSU-Middle Tennessee State University Saturday November 28th 1987. The Bodeans opened up for you. I remember at the time Larry had a crush on Wynonna Judd and she came out and sang a duo with Bono!
I didn't have tickets to the show. A friend of mine drove us 3 hours from East Tennessee to see the show. We bought tickets at the box office for $18.50. We ended up 8th row center stage!
I remember back then the band held back tickets for fans who were willing to make the drive and couldn't get tickets via phone or record store locations.
Thanks again to Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr for making a special album and tour! I was 18 and had just graduated High School that year!

Wow, great review! I've only seen U2 twice (not recently) but they could be-or close to it- the greatest live rock band ever. I think they benefit from their larger stage when they tour. I'll be in Vegas in December. It's my fourth trip there this year so I was trying to get by very cheaply. But I might have to pop for a ticket for this show however!

Love the review and footage , thanks for sharing. Nothing Compares To You is actually a Prince song. U2 publicized that these shows would be Achtungcentric , so it’s no big surprise
Inevitably popular “hits” would be absent from the setlist. The larger he catalogue and longer the history of a band, makes it like trying to get 10 lbs of stuff into a 2 pound bag. Along with the time constraint , nearly impossible to fit them all in. 🎸👍

It was difficult to see the sphere have a bigger stage than the band. I couldn’t separate myself from them and bought the 100 section tix and shouldn’t have. The view was slightly obstructed but I told myself it didn’t matter if I missed the graphics, I wanted to be closer to the band but it was impossible to focus on them. It was an older crowd. Im not even sure most of them were there for the band. Totally agree that concerts will never be the same after this!

I bought what they said were unobstructed views only now to find out now i'm in some of the worst seats in the place. I suffer from migraines so maybe not getting the full view might save me from a catastrophic neurological event (lol) but i'm still very upset with stub hub for misleading me into buying the tickets. of course the show is now sold out and seats going for thousands. i keep telling myself i'm there for the music and the band but after your review i'm wondering if it's worth it.

I think playing Achtung Baby entirely is correct as this is the changing album in U2 career, they shows all that they could do besides basic rock and roll. Then they started the big tours with cutting edge tech, so it is perfectly suitable. No other band could open better this venue than U2.
The off screen set is normal on ALL U2 concerts. We had this in all U2 big tours, I went to Pop Mart tour in 99 and the screen was huge, the biggest ever. Joshua Three, this is the moment U2 shows it as a band.
The disconnection can be due to the fact Larry isn't there. We couldn't ever imagine U2 playing without one member, can you even realize how the band felt that moment? For me, this is the only error, Vegas could wait for Larry, for the full U2, instead of showing us that money always talk louder. A line that should never be crossed was.
Even though, I hope I can see this concert live as your review was really amazing and showed me everything I was wanting to see.

Glad you enjoyed the show, thanks for sharing your thoughts. The venue looks very impressive for sure. I am sure a lot of people were taking notes that night. Engineers were likely looking to see what worked and what didn't work, the show directors were likely noting what worked on the setlist and what didn't (you mentioned that the band veered off into an acoustic piece that also didn't have a lot of visual flair - likely to give everyone a bit of a stimulation break) but perhaps they will shift songs around. As for the band, I think it was likely a bit nerve-wracking. They haven't played since 2019, they were missing Larry and getting used to a new drummer, they were testing out brand new tech and there were a lot of heavy-hitters like Paul McCartney, Jimmy Iovine, Oprah, Oscar de la Hoya, Snoop Dogg/ Dr Dre and more in the crowd... I saw an interview the day before the show where Bono was coming down hard on himself as their last rehersal didn't go well (He felt the guys did well - but he was annoyed with himself!) I can't help but wonder - with reports of some people getting a bit of motion sickness... could it be distracting for the band too? Anyway - U2 are U2; consummate professionals so I have no doubt at all that they will be taking notes of their own and learning from experience. Sounds like they were pretty good aside from a bit of first-night jitters and rust; give them a few shows and they'll likely hit their stride. I admit it is cool to see the Fly again !

I last saw them in 2009. I had no intention of seeing them again because frankly, they could not get better than they were that night. They could only age gracefully. I’ve never been to LV and never had a desire to go, until now. I wouldn’t want to experience Sphere w/out U2, and I wouldn’t want U2 again anywhere but Sphere. I’ll be there end of the month. I’m rather relieved at your biggest disappointment, that there are some visual breaks. I’m kinda old and think I might need that, lol! I’ve seen video of the rope and balloon and I HATE it. It “triggers” my fear of heights. I’m in the 400’s already, I don’t need extra! The set list: If they played every song I wanted to hear, it’d be a 3 day concert. I’m prepared to be happy with whichever two hours worth they give me. Now to figure out how to get to the hotel from the airport…. You’d think LV would be better at getting ppl to the Strip than they apparently are.

I attended the Zoo TV tour twice in the early 90's. Technology overload was a theme of that tour. "Voorsprung Der technique" is a lyric from Zooropa, meaning ahead through technology, something the band has always embraced if you attended the Popmart or 360 Tour.
I think the crowd was just overwhelmed with the whole experience.
My feeling is that it's a still a work in progress. I told my friend it would be interesting to attend a show towards the end of the residency in early December.
As for the band, they were in good form, even with this new drummer filling in for Larry, which you didn't mention. The crowd welcomed him as he did a great job.
With the vast library of songs to choose from, there'll always be that favorite that wasn't played. I was hoping for Bad, or Stay, Lemon, Magnificent...but nope.
I went the second night, and there were some technical glitches. I didn't mind...meeting this deadline must've been a madhouse behind the scenes.
      Think your review was...a 7 out of 10. 😊

PopMart Tour 25 years ago was actually way more fun, innovative and awesome. 40' tall screens, DVI, chromakey, the miracle of satellite TV, an opera singing spaceman, cool costumes and a real grand entrance. They even had a giant mirrorball lemon that moved and they could hide inside. That was real creative thinking. That was truly groundbreakimg. Sphere is just a slightly higher definition IMAX theater that cost $2.39999 billion more to build. Like, it didn't even use the vibration or scent technology that Sphere supposedly has.

We had a great view of the band and 90% of the screen. But yes, fans were complaining who were further back in 100. Our seats were originally in 400 and we got upgraded unexpectedly due to a lovely couple who had two seats because their friends had to leave for a family emergency. Went to the Oct. 21st show and it was impossible to describe in words. The whole experience, from walking up to the venue, going inside and exploring the inside, to the claustrophobic and vertigo-like experience of finding your seats was amazing. The pantheon like feel of the LED light display before the show was mesmerizing as well. Anyway, for anyone who doesn't think Achtung Baby was U2's best album and wasn't around when it launched in 1991, you may not get the max out of the experience but that album is brilliant from start to finish and they nailed it during this set. It's like they went back 30 years in time. One reason I made sure to attend this show was my deepest personal regret not forking over $45 or whatever the cost was to see them on the ZOO TV tour. Was 16 at the time and couldn't afford the ticket. Have been kicking myself since. Feel like I've filled a hole in my life experience with this show.

Huge U2 fan here. And the precise problem with their shows often (because they are so big)... is they need to please the big fans... and the huge amount of people who just decide to go see U2. because their U2. So as a fan you are disappointed they don't play more obscure tracks and albums... and as casual concert goer... you may be frustrated that they didn't play more hits. Its a no win. But ultimately they put on a great show either way. Can't please everyone. The point of not using the screen for a few songs... is to show off... we're still a band without this screen. If they lose the crowd.... fuck em. In most concerts they do they will have a miniature set, without visuals etc. But yeah, a Vegas crowd of tourists... ick. I really want to go... but the crowd is the things I'd worry about the most..

Totally agree with your review, especially the 100 section. After about row 20 you start losing part of the screen, because of the overhang of 200. I am curious to know if the sound was better though as it looked like rows of speakers in the overhang and the sound was probably the best I have heard at a concert.

You nailed it “will the band get lost in the video” - yes, for a while. Remember when lasers first came out… (I’m old so 1970s) -then the huge lighting rigs. But it all comes back to the music after a while - though this is a tremendous tech step forward. Enjoy !

I think the reason they performed Achtung Baby is because the tour of AB was Zoo Tv which itself was groundbreakibg. It changed the game, even the stones threw their hands up. There were shows before zoom tv and shows after zoo tv. I think you are right , this will change everything. In fact there really isn’t another band that could have launched the sphere like u2 can. .

@@desertflower13 Zoo TV is U2's cliche for the tour of the album Achtung Baby. The album tour was called the Zoo TV tour, away from the usual album name tours. Zoo TV stands for all the things going on in the world that you see on TV channel after channel, and at the time its ever increasing attention to find entertainment on TV. All you have to do is press a button on the remote to get away from it. During the concert, a screen behind the band would show hundreds of TVs and sometimes they would merge to show one image and be separate to show an image a hundredx times. Their technology message was 10-15 years ahead of the time.

If think the stones would tolerate any degradation of their work just refer back to the rights issue of Bittersweet symphony by the Verve. The reason the stones threw their hands in air was that they are well acknowledged showmen and U2s Zoo Tv tour ( subsequently Zoomerang ) changed stage performances forever. As you’re a real U2 fan please share your experience of seeing u2 in the dandelion market. I’d like to compare notes

I am very sad. Been a huge U2 fan since before Joshua Tree. Saw them three times back in the 80's, paid about $18 for tickets. Show looks incredible, but looking at ticket prices, I am sorry but concert prices have simply inflated WAY past actual inflation rates and I simply can't see paying hundreds of dollars for a couple of hours of music. Some of these tickets are going for over $6000!!!!! That is just STUPID. I have a collection of concert videos which will likely remain the only way I will be able to see live performances going forward. Concerts have simply no longer been priced for the common man.

It's Vegas. And it depends on who you want to see. I saw Barry Manilow in March in Vegas, and it was less than $100 total for a seat if I remember. So many fees. But he was unbelievably good. I was amazed. Go see him before he dies. He made other bands/shows look like amateur garage bands. Saw Rick Springfield at the Strat on that same trip, and he wasn't as good that show as previous shows that were closer to home, but still was like $100 or less. Yes, these U2 ticket prices are insane. I paid $300 for Genesis tickets that were on the floor, maybe 16 rows back, in Cleveland and that was really pushing it for me. But - favorite band ever, last tour.

What about the music? I pick up it was all about the spectacle, as opposed to the music.., we all want a great audio and visual performance, but first and foremost, a concert is about the music, for me at least...
