Finally had a chance to sit down and record this over the weekend. It's funny, Ive been playing Metallica songs for years but only ever learnt the main riffs to songs. This one surprised me having to go back and look at the Tab just how insane James's rhythm playing is under Kirks solo. It's a real pain on the right hand and I choked hard on it but its a blast to play.

Everyone talks about the riff at 4:05. No one says anything about the riff under the solo at 4:27. That's just as good, maybe better.

Most people really don't understand how good Justice really is. It's the most intricate Metallica album with the best guitar tone and profound lyrics. And the drumming from Lars was phenomenal. The most underrated metal album of all time.
Diapason Dlvg completely agree mate, this is their Opus. Puppets is obviously a game changer, But this was a whole different beast. Some of the shit James was doing rhythmicallly and melodically at this time was just so far out there, it still just blows me away.

fr!! those gallops are so fucking hard to do up to speed! i can play dyers eve, blackened, damage inc, disposable heroes and others but that riff keeps me awake at night

This is what I was looking for. A cover that correctly does the rhythm under Kirk's solo. When I approached this song I wasn't really interested in learning the solo as I find it to be one of Kirk's weaker ones. The Hetfield part is fucking gold though. Thanks!
Mesimarch thanks man! I love Kirks stuff and I wish I was a solo guy but I've always been drawn to just rhythm stuff. Having someone like Hetfield to look up to for my playing style helps a lot! Dude is on another level rhythmicallly.
It's not a weak solo. It's harmonious with the rest of the song, especially with that rhythm guitar part that "accompanies" it

CWM I know this post is older but I just found it today and wanted to say you did an incredible job. I’m totally with you on James’ rhythm playing. I’ve always loved watching him play because he almost looks more like a machine than a man, the way his hand moves perfectly up the fretboard to the exact place it needs to be every time.

4:04 is sick! I used to listen to this album all the time when it first came out. My brother burned a copy of it on a cassette for me to play in my Sony Walkman. He had it on CD, which was cutting edge at the time. We used to listen to it while cruising with all our friends as well. We had all the previous 3 albums prior to that, so it was a very memorable thing when we put Justice in the tape deck in his car for the first time after school one day. That intro for Blackened and then the intensity of the first rhythm was electric. That was the last album that had that effect on us.
Tone is absolutely bang on.
This was when Metal hit its peak. Maybe the most important Thrash Metal album of all time woth the greatest Metal Rhythm guitarist of all time.

Alright, time to finally drop a comment after watching this video easily a few hundred times. Even die hard Metallica fans probably don't realize this is arguably James' best rhythm work ever. This song is insanely complicated, which is probably why they never played it live (or not until later and only by request). My sleeper hit from And Justice for sure. This is one of the best covers of all time: it is flawless and that's saying something because of the complexity.
