You can start a metal band TODAY if you know this stuff!!!
This lesson walks you through the basics on how to write metal riffs that sound like Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Pantera, and other metal classics. By combining our minor scale with two notoriously evil sounding intervals, the flat 2 and the tritone, we get a set of notes that is very easy to compose with in the metal genre.
If you like Metallica related videos, you MUST check out Andriy Vasylenko's channel. He was one of my first supporters and has an incredible knowledge of all things Metallica - / andriyvasylenko

Wow, I was close! My guess was Locrian + melodic minor) The C# (if in E) pops up here and there in Metallica songs, which sweetens them. Master of Puppets main riff, Creeping Death little bridge to verses, Spit out the bone interlude riff (the bass "solo") as a few examples of it. Great video Jake, and thanks for mentioning me! ;-)
Btw, if to analyse Megadeth this way, it might be basically the chromatic scale))

Megadeth likely would be the same, as Ride the Lightning and other such Metallica songs were written by Mustaine. Couple of Megadeth tunes with the same sorta thing off my mind: 1000 Times Goodbye, The Scorpion intro, Countdown to Extinction, Holy Wars, Devil's Island, Hook in Mouth, etc.

It's an E Natural Minor scale. You're thinking of E-Dorian minor. There are more than one minor scales you know. Here, try this Natural Harmonic scale used by Randy Rhoads: (E Natural Minor = E,F#,G,A,B,C,D#,E) It's the E Natural Minor scale only you sharp the 7th tone.

Men curious you talk about jazz, I noticed that the b2 and the b5 in the minor scale are the respectives sevenths of the 3rd and the 6th chords, used a lot in jazz. Isn’t it the same scale, but in minor for Metallica and major for jazz?

It doesn't necessarily have to be demonic.
It could just be human emotions, depressed, pissed off, anger, rage, hate, violence, war, or even just stress. Or it could be monsters from movies, fantasy and fiction, Godzilla, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Orcs, Goblins, dragons, vampires, aliens, those sorts of things. It doesn't have to be evil spirits or about dark spirituality. I don't know why people are so obsessed with that, or possessed by that? Could be sharks, or a car crash, or a swamp monster. Anything. It doesn't have to be Linda Blair or sewer clowns, or whatever. LOL. It's like Evil Dead was about deadites/kandarian demons, but in Army of Darkness it eventually was just Ash fighting a bunch of skeletons. Dark doesn't always have to be totally creepy. It can even be humorous. What is kind of weird is how many dark notes there are. Basically any note from the entire chromatic scale can be made to sound dark if you use it with the right combinations of notes. I wonder if that works in reverse? Hmmm...
Exodus have written about Piranha and even cannibalism, so that's a good thing. Satan and demons have become played out topics in metal. At the end of the day all we really want is good guitar playing and good musicianship all around.

Wow this was excellent!! As a long time guitarist and metal fan, you really nailed the simple theory behind the foundation of what you feel intuitively “just sounds good” and “metal” when you play. Basically it’s the minor scale + flat 2nd and flat 5th. That’s it! Then you can take it and run with it, mix it up, etc. But that nails the foundation. Thanks for explaining it in this way, adds a new level of understanding!

I got into theorie since 1year. I should have 25 years ago. It did so much to me. This is a great video as it introduce you to chromatic note (especially the evil dissonance) added to the minor scale. Music theorie is not rule to follow but, as mentioned a way to understand the music.
I recommend everyone to learn the diatonic scale and its 7 modes and from add the harmonic and melodic scale. I also use the neapolitan scale (it use the flat 2 et flat 5 and the major 7 notrs ...DISSONANCE).
Completing the scale arsenal you also need to learn the Diminished, and augmented scales.
    As simple as that \m/

I have a question about Scales. You mentioned in the Minor video that while playing in a minor key we should focus on the tonic as to not accidentally flip the scale into a major tonality. I'm curious to know if you know about particular modes that allow you to focus on different scale degrees without corrupting the root tonality of the music you're playing. I hope this makes sense.
Finally, thank you for all the incredible content. You are a great music teacher.

  • @StanAlter
    @StanAlter 6 років тому +48

I was gonna say the Locrian/Minor scale or Locrian modal interchange something like that. Since Kirk is a student of Satriani I can assume he's well knowledged about modes. I've also heard him say Wherever I May Roam is the Locrian mode with a Dominant solo.

    • @SignalsMusicStudio
      @SignalsMusicStudio  6 років тому +12

The solo in that song is mostly Phrygian Dominant. The main riff feels like phrygian but uses lots of extra notes, including the tritone and the major 7th. The verse as well uses a bV chord, way outside of any E key but fits fine in "E Metallica". The bridge goes through a straight ascending Double Harmonic Major scale, and its LOVELY!

The Locrian b4, Lydian dominant or phrygian dominant is over played.
The N6 = harmonic min b2 or melodic min b2 are also EMATIC scales
Joe wrote a song on Engine of Creation using an Ematic scales..
He went more in depth...rather than just playing linear
he study chords within them...after he got done noodling (fucking around.lol)
he was like...WTF..didnt people notice that shit was WEIRD.lmao
Never the less...You can play A double harmonic min with a b7...
it'll just be one of the modes from the N6...
Harmonic min b5 or Melodic min b5
From A as the root....for clearity
      A Harmonic min b5 = D dorian b2, #4,...F mix, #2, #4
      A Melodic min b5 = D lydian dominant b2...lmao
The F mix #2, #4 is just F Hungerian MAJOR
This way you can play is as Dominant too.lmao
      Half or FULL diminished.
      MAJ or min
You'll get use to it...if you play A lydian b3 over the minor's TONIC.
You can make it minor or FULL diminihsed...All b3 intervals.
      AKA the devils's INTERVALS...ya evil bastards.lmao
Or you can take the MArty approch....just FUCK the pentatonic scale.
Fuck it all up....What he meant was...play the other 7 notes too.lmao

Great video and thanks for including the reference to the locrian … that’s the bit where it motivated me to comment.
Understanding that we have a music system built on 12 semi tones in one octave and all the respective derivatives in scales, modes and chords is one thing, how to use them constructively, is what I find as the biggest challenge.
Thanks for opening the door for us on that schematic approach along with the worked examples you played.

You probably forgot an important thing in composing them, (or chose to omit because this IS a theory vid) which is the right hand technique included. Tho this is a theory vid, adding stuff like downpicking every note gives a lot of grit and at the same time acts as a sort of compressor, making sure that every note you pick is loud and has the same relative volume and attack as the last note. Another thing is adding the octave in your powerchord whenever a long duration of a single powerchord is played. It gives a ton of girth and sounds thick as fck. All that aside, great video and this makes me wanna pick up my guitar and write riffs again.

MiCaCasTuCaCa A good band to start practicing riff composing is just about as good as any other, but I do recommend starting off with the Big 4 (Met, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax) which are all great foundations for heavy, standard tuning riffs. If ya wanna take it up a notch, try Nuclear Assault, Machine Head, Judas Priest or maybe even 5FDP. They make some of the tastiest and heaviest riffs IMO, but who knows. The world is big and there are a lot of bands.

Old Navajo Tricks That's more like Guthrie Govan than Yngwie. Yngwie is more like "pick any key and sweep through the harmonic minor scale," or"play something insanely fast and technical, but call it 'blues' because it uses the natural minor scale, even though it doesn't sound like any kind of blues at all." 😜
