It is wonderful! I had the same kinda of love for a thing I did until it was all stripped away. And the person that did it had no soul and didn't care. A completely soulless inhumane purpose.

I don't know. For him to not have innovated or progressed past 1992, that he is still around getting into feuds with UA-camrs that are so much more proficient than him.... he was a hero of mine, and I just find him anything but compelling nowadays with his ruby slippers and anti-guitar solo thinking. The Metallica I know has 5 albums. Iconic solos, artists really pushing themselves and the limits. That band has been gone a long time and was replaced by body snatchers with painted fingernails and deep laziness.
After all this time he’s still in love with music. That’s truly incredible. Respect.
Well, he does have the luxury of not having to work a dayjob to be the rent. But that's no excuse, because there are plenty of other artists who have reached financial security and who then start doing complete other things.
Why wouldn't he be? It's his life.

Well, it's comforting to hear that my Les Paul isn't the only one that gets out of tune easily.
Let me share my theory:
There can only be a certain number of Les Paul guitars in tune in the world.
So each time someone tunes a Les Paul onother one goes out of tune.
This number is not known yet, but it's estimated to be between 10 and 37.
In the early days, with fewer guitars in circulation it was les noticiable, but with rising production numbers it's impossible to keep one in tune.

I can just imagine the tuning pegs turning by themselves and detuning right in front your eyes, while elsewhere another person is tuning up 😂😂 @impossivel2006

Yeah. Funny how musicians are way more open minded than some of their hardcore fans.
Most of them would choke on their beer hearing that their favorite guitarist actually appreciates Genesis works.
Usually though, guitarists more often refer to the solo of Firth of fifth rather than the strumming of Turn it on again.
One guitar part from Mike Rutherford that is also underrated in my opinion is Second Home by the sea.

I enjoyed so much listening to Kirk talking about the way he "sees" music and guitar playing. He is so excited and seems like someone who just learned things about music, but his career says something totally different 😂 his humility is almost disarming, yet he is one of the best living guitarists ever.

While not a big fan of Kirks playing, I have always thought he was a very down to Earth guy. I'll give his solo work a listen. Rick, you always pull cool interviews seemingly out of no where. Thank you.
I liked his playing in the early years, but they have been going for so long he starts to repeat himself sometimes I think. And they totally lost me after the Black album anyway, But I appreciate that the mighty Met is still around, even if I can't be bothered to listen to their stuff after say 1996.

@@vw1610When I say I haven't listened after 96, I don't mean I have listened to everything up until and through that time frame. Garage Inc, all covers, is my last favorite Metallica compilation. I listen to maybe 4 songs off S&M. What is this Outlaw torn you speak of? One of their country songs? I can't be bothered friend, they lost me, it's just not heavy enough.
In '96 my tastes had changed to heavier heavier heavier. Believe it or not, at this point in time, Metallica was going radio friendly, radio friendly, radio friendly. For those that are under 50, "radio" was how we listened to music before the Internet, usually, or on CD / cassette / vinyl. And it was sellout culture aimed at the least common denominator, which is what Metallica pivoted to. Loved them when they where my band, but they aren't anymore.

I remember when I was in 6th grade sitting down with my trumpet and watching the TV show called Strike Force and teaching myself the theme song for the show. I went into school on Monday and started playing it and the other trumpeters were very impressed but then starting criticizing that I was missing a note here or there. The point is, it's so cool to see that musicians outside of what band or whatever music they are supposed to play love to tinker as well and that is what keeps them enthused.
Really enjoyed his enthusiasm. Makes me like him for his fire and how much he cares & loves music.

I wish I had started listening to Jeff Beck earlier, I only became interested after he passed. Big mistake. I bought a few albums recently, and they freaking scorch. I'm a massive heavy metal fan (for my weight class) and Beck isn't metal in the current sense in 2024, but he's still totally fucking metal.
Kirk Hammett had a column in guitar world and he always talked about how Schenker was a massive influence on him

Finally someone has taken the time to talk about different woods for guitars, variants of sound and tones from different guage strings and even hand strengthening exercises using unusual chords. Absolutely class video.

I actually use a Hendrickx set of strings on my Strat with those gauges I stay in standard tuning, but still. Amazing. He knew what he was doing.

I never was a Kirk Hammett fan, but watching his interview I can definitely tell why he has mass appeal to the crowd.
He and Robert are the nice guys of the band. And because they are the nice guys of the band they get shafted by the a-holes of the band. But they have LOTS of money to comfort themselves and Kirk seems to be happy doing what he does, make and play music.
Well Lars comes across as a bit of a knob, but James seems like a nice guy tbh. I saw some live footage recently where kirk completely screwed up a part, a James put his arm around kirk like a loving brother, as to say its all cool bro. @@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623
i have seen a lot of comments on other parts of the interview that Kirk is mind altered a bit. I dont know him, so no idea, but i love his passion, excitement, and a bit of innocence he portrays. He is still having fun with guitar and still learning. it is wonderful to see.

Finding out about Jimi's strings sent me down a rabbit hole, spent a few years not even learning a new song or anything really related to playing because I was swapping strings just to play a few riffs at least a few times a day.

Jimmy was constantly tuning his ride during concerts. He was all over the tuning after every song.

I do this as well, recently I have been studying Kim Thayil's Soundgarden lately and I can't get enough of it. It's learning new stuff when you learn covers. I'm still learning, and hopefully always will be.
Thayil is a sonic shaman, so many weird tunings and the way he manipulates the guild bridge

I literally learned by ear, no lessons. I love his enthusiasm to just figure things out. Never stop the love for learning. I've written songs to the rhythm of the dryer, everything is in the ear of the beholder.

It'd be easy to be critical of this, but he's talking about trying to play things that he's not accustomed to. He's pretty honest and open about this stuff not being his thing (clean RnB/Jazz chords are obviously not at all what he does in Metallica) so, I can't help but like him and respect him for still wanting to learn things outside of his comfort zone.

Knowing a chord is one thing but playing it correctly is a whole different story.
That first one sounded like the beginning of the song “This Charming Man” by The Smiths!
I play mainly hardcore, with some leads and a rare solo. The Dean Markley 2558 set are my jam. I don't use the 10, so my set goes high to low at 13-17-30-42-52 and I tune to drop-C! The beef and chop on my Charvel really make me happy!
The rhythm section on that Genesis song is so badass along with the vox that the guitar part gets highly overlooked. Great song!!!
Cool video, but, at no point did Kirk say "these are my three favorites" he just gave examples of some riffs he was playing with.

Interesting seeing Kirk look so uncomfortable playing a Genesis riff - but I love it! It goes to show that a lifelong pro guitarist can also keep learning . . . and that they have struggles that put them out of their comfort zone too. It’s so funny seeing him strum like that period, but also seeing him try complex fancy fingerings that we’d never see him do in Metallica.
Btw, I’d love to see all the guys try some solo work that’s different from the Metallica I’ve loved my entire life. It would be cool to see them try new things. I personally loved Lulu and St. Anger, but I realize that’s not the popular opinion lol. These guys should be able to explore and experiment!

Old Les Pauls has to be worked, not super easy players, and even if being a pro player anything unfamiliar is just that: unfamiliar, like it is for everyone. Nice sounding stuff has to be practised, and Kirk said this was stuff he never had played which he loves but yes it was hard for him. He really struggled LoL but nothing strange with that

They got into playing their own material at such a young age and have been touring and recording. I can imagine this all develop you in a very specific way regarding muscle memory. In the end it all comes down to practice and the scope of it.
Also kirk was never a rhythm guitarist, even if he plays the riffs hes way sloppier than james. Still love the guy and his playing has shaped my own also.

Well this is crazy. When I started playing guitar I was into metal. Played with some friends. But I would always love playing jazz. It’s the scales. It’s the timing. It really helped me in playing all the other stuff. Jazz was just really fun. And hearing an idol of mine say that is crazy.
Kirk is so enthusiastic, it's always pleasant to hear him talk.
