Let me share my theory: There can only be a certain number of Les Paul guitars in tune in the world. So each time someone tunes a Les Paul onother one goes out of tune. This number is not known yet, but it's estimated to be between 10 and 37. In the early days, with fewer guitars in circulation it was les noticiable, but with rising production numbers it's impossible to keep one in tune.

@@jimmyjams5038 Look I respect the point you have made, he's played on some fantastic songs which counts for a lot, but let's be real, he had all the possible advantages of production, an entire team of studio professionals. The problem with Kirk's playing has always been there. He brought up a specific Genesis tune (Turn it on again), said he 'learned it', and then simply played the wrong chords, wrong voicings, and the wrong rhythm, he sounded scrappy at best and frankly, he demonstrated the problem he has as a musician which is a lack of detail and commitment to his craft. Music is wonderful thing and I have spent my life working at it, but it isn't magic, it's an ordered system with rules, no matter the genre, no matter the style.

My point doesn't diminish Kirk's achievements it's just an observation that his attitude towards the instrument has held him back throughout his career. Success is often specific to the individual right? It doesn't revolve purely around the money or the size of the crowd, getting better at what 'you' do on the guitar makes everything easier and sound better, more enjoyable, it keeps you interested in doing it. I'm not suggesting that Kirk should take up modern jazz or become Malmsteen. I'm just honestly shocked that his ego has got in the way of him really taking advantage of his insane luck. When you see how slow Kirk is in the studio, it really brings home what I'm saying. I work as a musician fulltime and I do some work in what remains of the "session industry". He is, remarkably slow as a recording guitarist and a sloppy live player.
As long as he has been doing it and Kirk knows he does not know everything and is PASSIONATE about trying to learn. I have always loved Kirk's guitar playing. This is great stuff Rick.

I remember when I was in 6th grade sitting down with my trumpet and watching the TV show called Strike Force and teaching myself the theme song for the show. I went into school on Monday and started playing it and the other trumpeters were very impressed but then starting criticizing that I was missing a note here or there. The point is, it's so cool to see that musicians outside of what band or whatever music they are supposed to play love to tinker as well and that is what keeps them enthused.
I’ll be honest, I never got into Metallica as a preference. But Kirk’s enthusiasm is so infectious. I mean I am completely impressed! I also like how he is impressed with other’s work as if he is a kid in a bedroom. Also how he is perfectly fine playing in a clean tone and not trying to impress. I’m impressed!☺
Finding out about Jimi's strings sent me down a rabbit hole, spent a few years not even learning a new song or anything really related to playing because I was swapping strings just to play a few riffs at least a few times a day.

I wish I had started listening to Jeff Beck earlier, I only became interested after he passed. Big mistake. I bought a few albums recently, and they freaking scorch. I'm a massive heavy metal fan (for my weight class) and Beck isn't metal in the current sense in 2024, but he's still totally fucking metal.
Kirk and Jeff "r.i.p" are the reason I picked up a guitar. And 20 years later I am still as inspired as the day I picked it up. Its great to see kirk with the same enthusiasm!
All guitarists are always learning. Remember, he became famous on stuff HE WROTE. As a guitar player myself, things you come up with on your own is much EASIER to play than other music. Also, alot of these guys never play it the same way twice, there can always be some variation, to keep it fresh!!
It'd be easy to be critical of this, but he's talking about trying to play things that he's not accustomed to. He's pretty honest and open about this stuff not being his thing (clean RnB/Jazz chords are obviously not at all what he does in Metallica) so, I can't help but like him and respect him for still wanting to learn things outside of his comfort zone.
The man has been a reference for so many for decades, and yet he doesnt care if the chords are not perfectly played, he doesnt take himself too seriously. He is just there, guitar on his lap, and excited to be talking about his passion.
He and Robert are the nice guys of the band. And because they are the nice guys of the band they get shafted by the a-holes of the band. But they have LOTS of money to comfort themselves and Kirk seems to be happy doing what he does, make and play music.

I play mainly hardcore, with some leads and a rare solo. The Dean Markley 2558 set are my jam. I don't use the 10, so my set goes high to low at 13-17-30-42-52 and I tune to drop-C! The beef and chop on my Charvel really make me happy!
Interesting seeing Kirk look so uncomfortable playing a Genesis riff - but I love it! It goes to show that a lifelong pro guitarist can also keep learning . . . and that they have struggles that put them out of their comfort zone too. It’s so funny seeing him strum like that period, but also seeing him try complex fancy fingerings that we’d never see him do in Metallica. Btw, I’d love to see all the guys try some solo work that’s different from the Metallica I’ve loved my entire life. It would be cool to see them try new things. I personally loved Lulu and St. Anger, but I realize that’s not the popular opinion lol. These guys should be able to explore and experiment!
Old Les Pauls has to be worked, not super easy players, and even if being a pro player anything unfamiliar is just that: unfamiliar, like it is for everyone. Nice sounding stuff has to be practised, and Kirk said this was stuff he never had played which he loves but yes it was hard for him. He really struggled LoL but nothing strange with that
They got into playing their own material at such a young age and have been touring and recording. I can imagine this all develop you in a very specific way regarding muscle memory. In the end it all comes down to practice and the scope of it. Also kirk was never a rhythm guitarist, even if he plays the riffs hes way sloppier than james. Still love the guy and his playing has shaped my own also.

As many have said, I just love that he’s still SO in love with just learning and playing and stretching his abilities. It lights up his brain the same mine (did) when I’d learn something new.

While not a big fan of Kirks playing, I have always thought he was a very down to Earth guy. I'll give his solo work a listen. Rick, you always pull cool interviews seemingly out of no where. Thank you.
I liked his playing in the early years, but they have been going for so long he starts to repeat himself sometimes I think. And they totally lost me after the Black album anyway, But I appreciate that the mighty Met is still around, even if I can't be bothered to listen to their stuff after say 1996.

I listen to maybe 4 songs off S&M. What is this Outlaw torn you speak of? One of their country songs? I can't be bothered friend, they lost me, it's just not heavy enough.
In '96 my tastes had changed to heavier heavier heavier. Believe it or not, at this point in time, Metallica was going radio friendly, radio friendly, radio friendly. For those that are under 50, "radio" was how we listened to music before the Internet, usually, or on CD / cassette / vinyl. And it was sellout culture aimed at the least common denominator, which is what Metallica pivoted to. Loved them when they where my band, but they aren't anymore.

I remember when I was in 6th grade sitting down with my trumpet and watching the TV show called Strike Force and teaching myself the theme song for the show. I went into school on Monday and started playing it and the other trumpeters were very impressed but then starting criticizing that I was missing a note here or there. The point is, it's so cool to see that musicians outside of what band or whatever music they are supposed to play love to tinker as well and that is what keeps them enthused.
I’ll be honest, I never got into Metallica as a preference. But Kirk’s enthusiasm is so infectious. I mean I am completely impressed! I also like how he is impressed with other’s work as if he is a kid in a bedroom. Also how he is perfectly fine playing in a clean tone and not trying to impress. I’m impressed!☺
Finding out about Jimi's strings sent me down a rabbit hole, spent a few years not even learning a new song or anything really related to playing because I was swapping strings just to play a few riffs at least a few times a day.
Kirk loves music and horror and has so much knowledge...dude is awesome...this is much appreciated sirs...

I wish I had started listening to Jeff Beck earlier, I only became interested after he passed. Big mistake. I bought a few albums recently, and they freaking scorch. I'm a massive heavy metal fan (for my weight class) and Beck isn't metal in the current sense in 2024, but he's still totally fucking metal.
Kirk Hammett had a column in guitar world and he always talked about how Schenker was a massive influence on him
Kirk and Jeff "r.i.p" are the reason I picked up a guitar. And 20 years later I am still as inspired as the day I picked it up. Its great to see kirk with the same enthusiasm!
All guitarists are always learning. Remember, he became famous on stuff HE WROTE. As a guitar player myself, things you come up with on your own is much EASIER to play than other music. Also, alot of these guys never play it the same way twice, there can always be some variation, to keep it fresh!!
It'd be easy to be critical of this, but he's talking about trying to play things that he's not accustomed to. He's pretty honest and open about this stuff not being his thing (clean RnB/Jazz chords are obviously not at all what he does in Metallica) so, I can't help but like him and respect him for still wanting to learn things outside of his comfort zone.

The man has been a reference for so many for decades, and yet he doesnt care if the chords are not perfectly played, he doesnt take himself too seriously. He is just there, guitar on his lap, and excited to be talking about his passion.
I actually use a Hendrickx set of strings on my Strat with those gauges I stay in standard tuning, but still. Amazing. He knew what he was doing.
I never was a Kirk Hammett fan, but watching his interview I can definitely tell why he has mass appeal to the crowd.
He and Robert are the nice guys of the band. And because they are the nice guys of the band they get shafted by the a-holes of the band. But they have LOTS of money to comfort themselves and Kirk seems to be happy doing what he does, make and play music.
Well Lars comes across as a bit of a knob, but James seems like a nice guy tbh. I saw some live footage recently where kirk completely screwed up a part, a James put his arm around kirk like a loving brother, as to say its all cool bro. @@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623

I remember a few months ago watching this whole interview and I don't remember him saying he had his own album out! So I just listen to it, (Portals) and I think it's fugin awesome! Dam Kirk! I play mainly hardcore, with some leads and a rare solo. The Dean Markley 2558 set are my jam. I don't use the 10, so my set goes high to low at 13-17-30-42-52 and I tune to drop-C! The beef and chop on my Charvel really make me happy!

Kirk has always been wildly underrated as both a guitar player and as a person.
Interesting seeing Kirk look so uncomfortable playing a Genesis riff - but I love it! It goes to show that a lifelong pro guitarist can also keep learning . . . and that they have struggles that put them out of their comfort zone too. It’s so funny seeing him strum like that period, but also seeing him try complex fancy fingerings that we’d never see him do in Metallica.
Btw, I’d love to see all the guys try some solo work that’s different from the Metallica I’ve loved my entire life. It would be cool to see them try new things. I personally loved Lulu and St. Anger, but I realize that’s not the popular opinion lol. These guys should be able to explore and experiment!

Old Les Pauls has to be worked, not super easy players, and even if being a pro player anything unfamiliar is just that: unfamiliar, like it is for everyone. Nice sounding stuff has to be practised, and Kirk said this was stuff he never had played which he loves but yes it was hard for him. He really struggled LoL but nothing strange with that

They got into playing their own material at such a young age and have been touring and recording. I can imagine this all develop you in a very specific way regarding muscle memory. In the end it all comes down to practice and the scope of it.
Also kirk was never a rhythm guitarist, even if he plays the riffs hes way sloppier than james. Still love the guy and his playing has shaped my own also.

I literally learned by ear, no lessons. I love his enthusiasm to just figure things out. Never stop the love for learning. I've written songs to the rhythm of the dryer, everything is in the ear of the beholder.
