They have beat...which is supremely important..they can't really sing..but they have the beat.
Layne accidentally sang better than everyone ever with his hands in his pockets
Lmao. So soooo true!!! No effort at all 🤘🏼🖤
Never meaning to outshine the guitar or drums...he shared his 🕯️
That's because it's his voice. If he covered someone elses song it would be a bit off because we are used to hearing someone else.
Omg no truer words have been spoken!!!’ Lol. So phenomenal and one of the greatest IMO.
You aren’t kidding there. Wow. What a talent.
Sean Kinney doesn't get enough praise for his drumming.
His style is definitely distinct, and it's part of what gives them their unique sound.
I love style. There is only one Sean Kinney.
Agreed! He even carried on a conversation with the sound guy @ 3:21 without missing a beat
His drumming is so fluid.. like water.. almost slippery sounding, but also very solid and tight, if that makes any sense...
The most underrated rythm section ever.
That bass line is so iconic. RIP Layne
And the guy who wrote it... Mike Starr
And she's sooo fun to play!
It's my favorite.
And to Mike Starr another taken to soon!!! ❤️🩹
According to legend (and there's no way to know if it's true because he has too much class to ever try taking credit for), Jerry Cantrell wrote that bassline and taught it to Mike Starr. I believe it's in David De Sola's AIC biography where this is revealed.
It was either one of the producers, engineers, or studio techs who worked with them on 'Would' said Mike Starr had a rough idea for it originally, but it didn't have the same oomph, bounce, or movement in it until Jerry took it over and improved upon it and taught it back to Mike in return. Mike didn't have a problem with Jerry doing this because he was becoming increasingly distracted around this time.
This was also when the band first started having issues with Mike Starr because he seemed to care more about banging every woman he saw (Mike Starr was a pin-up model and hunk during the Grunge era), and was now beginning to show up to the studio exhausted, unprepared, and lacking a clear mind. The band didn't know it was heroin he was using yet, they just knew it was *something.* Something was affecting his mental clarity. Mike ultimately conceded that, yes, his bass line could be better. So he turned to Jerry and sought his input.
Regardless, it's hard to say how much of it is truly Mike's bassline versus Jerry's. The producer was only sowing the seeds in reader's minds for why Mike Starr would be dismissed from the band the next year. He wasn't trying to trash him or anything. He was just giving readers the backstory for what was to come with Mike.
It's like Layne isn't even trying, he's just so naturally good and smooth that any way he wants to sing is at his mere will without effort. What a voice.
His vocals are also just so orginal sounding....I've never heard a voice like his and never will again.
I think the same thing every time I see them play would on unplugged. It’s like he puts zero effort into sounding amazing. He was so talented
He’s not even out of first gear and he sounds incredible
Agreed. He had a voice and style that can't even be closely imitated
The guy was truly gifted, and in turn he gifted us with that voice. 🖤🎶🎤
Will never forget ‘93 lollapalooza. Saw Rage, Primus, Alice, Tool. What a day.

Layne is wearing the most 90’s outfit ever!
The 90s uniform, long sleeve shirt under the short sleeve shirt, baggy jeans.
The Hat puts him over the top!
Yeah, and to think it was only '93.
My brain was like god i miss the 90s when i saw that attire
Yeah. I love it soo much! 🤟💜
Their sound check is higher quality than most bands performance today.
Bands dont do their own sound checks anymore lol
Yeah, indeed!
there are bands today??
Don't be that guy come on
@@timeboy8770 don’t be THAT guy. Cmon.
It's unbelievable that for the first part of the first chorus Layne's mic wasn't even on yet... Such a powerful voice
Wow. He was a force.
Layne looks healthy and comfortable and it’s heartbreaking
This was a soundcheck. Let me repeat that. This was a soundcheck. If this doesn't blow your mind about what the 90's were I don't know what will. Hopefully authentic, real, and soulful music can one day happen again. God help us all.
The robots are taking over
There’s plenty of it, but it ain’t on the radio. A few modern alt bands I’ve been listening to over the last couple of years: Helms Alee, Kowloon Walled City, Grails.
The Melvins invented grunge when they were already 5 years old and they haven’t slowed down for a second in 40 years.
I believe Mastodon is the best band of the last 30 years. They’ve also toured with AIC a few times and play Friedman amps.
Torche is another good one.
Relapse Records’ roster is a good place to start finding good heavy music.
Agreed!!!
Only a sound check.. better than most bands what if
The drums sound absolutely massive!
The good ol days. Wish I would've been alive back then lolol

Mike's bass is sick
A stack of Ampegs
Who does that?
Mike does!
Is it me or is the bass always out of tune when he plays live?
@@eliasmg9144 The bass have a chorus/flanger, so maybe that's the detune that you hear
@@borisbecker6433 maybe, but the odd thing is, it only happened when Mike Starr was playing. Whenever Inez played Rotten Apple, Nutshell or Again the bass felt appropriate. I'm not saying Starr was a bad player, it was probably the way he set up his gear

That roaring bass intro was one of the things that got me interested in playing bass as a kid.
I usually don't like 'bass intros' like this, but this is f* gold
Awesome!!
Seems like at 3:43 Layne heard Sean singing as well and he quickly turned back around and you can see Sean smiling . Such beautiful moments man, what a great musician Layne was.
To me it seemed like layne turned around so he could match the timing of Sean's cymbals

His vibrato is so non-metal/non-rock/non-grunge, something I'd hear in pop or opera, yet he uses it in this genre. It's lethally effective.
Sean and Layne at the ending was so Beautiful... Good Buds forever
Lmao that had me dying when he waited so long to hit the cymbal

My dad was born in ‘75 and he always told me how if it wasn’t for AIC I wouldn’t be alive they got him out of his addiction and severe depression as a young adult so in a way I’m always grateful for these dudes✌️
Your father understood AIC, and people like your father were exactly the kind of people Layne was trying to reach and help. One of Layne's biggest disappointments in life was that people were doing the opposite of what Layne wanted, they're were getting high listening to his work, instead of learning from his mistakes and getting sober like he wanted.
One of the most iconic bass intros ever to this day.
My God, just a sound check and killing it...
The idea is they are listening to the mix and levels, not necessarily the performance
I love how Jerry just casually strolls across the stage at about 3:00 checking things out.

The power in that voice was so amazing.
If I was a AIC technician I would be fired on the first day. I would just sit and watch the guys playing.
Hell yeah dude. I actually love this recording because it gives you a better idea of how good of a drummer Sean really is. Because of how good Jerry and Layne are, Sean's work often goes underrated, if not completely unnoticed.
You make a good point
All of them were equally talented.
I was literally just watching Sean the whole time going... jeezuz...guy is a monster. I always knew he was but watching a soundcheck, guy plays like it's his last gig. BTW - this soundcheck is like at 8am in the morning... Jerry's still in sweats.
Yea, Sean Kinney is definitely one of the best drummers from the 90's. His work is flawless 👌

I feel sad for Layne and Mike's death. I wish they could of survived their addictions and went on to help others survive theirs. It didn't have to end that way for them.
The part around 1:09 when he belts out that note and you can hear him over everything else, even tho his mic isn't turned on yet.... legend..
Yea, his voice was so powerful👌
His mic was on, just not turned up. You ain’t screaming over a live festival instrument mix no matter how powerful your voice is.
damn he looks super stylish even with casual jeans and a leather jacket
That pause before the “YOU” at the end was priceless
They simply don't build them like this anymore. When a live sound check sounds nearly identical to the studio version without even being dialed in yet... these guys rocked, in the truest sense of the word.
OMG! I was 19 in '93... an angry young man who idolized AIC. I miss Layne.
I was 13 🥲
Me too
I was 3
Lucky! Depending on what time in 1993, I was 0.00-0.01 years old, how was life?!
Same here.
Those technician dudes must have been paid quite well. I wouldn't be able to focus on my work if I had friggin Alice in Chains so close to me.
Layne is really a once in a lifetime type voice. Literally no one can reproduce it, been looking at covers
No one has ever come close to Layne's voice. No one. 🖤
Chris Cornell.
Not really true. Cornell matched him in his own way, but as far as someone sounding just like Staley, look up the song "Seasons" by Chout. That's the closest I've heard anyone sound like Staley, and it's a near 95% or so match. Then look up Brendan Maier (the vocalist from that band) on UA-cam as well. Also look up "Sober" by Skorned. Same vocalist.
The whole band is rocking the hell out of this sound check/song!!!! The sick bass intro...how Layne is just standing there singing... Jerry just doing his thing, walking up and down owning stage and Sean chatting while he doesn't miss a bit!!!!!! I love these guys!!! Can't get enough of this video!!!! AIC Rocks!!!❤
Holy shit this is so great. Layne went so hard at sound check! Love the ending waiting for Sean to hit the last note.
Alice is just one great Band. From Jerry to Kinney to Mike, and not to mention the wickedest Man to ever stand in front of a Microphone, Layne.
I was fortunate to not only see them at Lollapallooza Festival here in New Orleans in 1993, but I met them through my friend Philip Anselmo before they went on stage. Philip sang vocals on "Dam That River," with them, it was pretty unbelievable to watch. R.I.P. Layne.
did ya know Mike Scaccia
Phil Anselmo sang on Dam that River during their Nola Lollapalooza performance?? Now THAT is an epic story. I would kill for a recording of that
The damn soundcheck is better than many performances in front of paying customers currently. Layne the legend. RIP
I'm 55 and I love this band, and I've been so sad to see so many 90's bands have issues with heroin. So, so many losses. In Oct 2011 I lost my 20 yr old daughter to heroin as well.
The stuff is THE DEVIL!!! 💔
That is tragic. I'm hurting for you and your family. 💔
Sorry man
Sorry for your loss. Fuck drugs.
Was she living on her own? Did she start using while under your watch? , what age was she when she started using? Sorry for your loss but I’m curious. I have a 10 yr old and I’m already getting her up to date on what drugs do to people especially women. No way she gets near coke or heroin or even pills as long as I can draw air. God , school and family that’s what I’m teaching her right now. I told her there is a time for everything and knowing the time to graduate school, date for at least two years and then marry and start a family (without breaking that order) is the key to a happy life. Wish you a quick recovery from your loss and God bless
So much love to you my friend ❤
As a vocalist singing for 30 years i can hit the notes and grittiness of the vocals while singing this song, but it is so so fucking taxing. Layne was effortlessly good and insanely talented, his vocal chops are rare as hell with how easy he makes it sound. Also to be able to sing like this you need to be balls to the wall LOUD as hell even without mics and p.a. systems, I bet he pissed off a lot of neighbors in his time haha. Layne's voice had an evil tinge to it, made these songs have such a malicious tone, he was a god.
Graduation is Kanye’s best album
I know what you mean, I love it in the song Junkhead but also in Man in the box.
His vibrato is effortless and diabolical! What a voice. What a band! Layne, it didn’t have to be that way brother, and we all wish it wasn’t. Nothing romantic about dying that way, so if you know someone, throw a set in your pants and say something, do something. May save a life.
Went to the one in Ohio. I really can’t recall who went on before Alice but this storm rolled in so the band left the stage. Everyone went to seek shelter, the wind came whipping in, it was very dark and ominous. The moment was not lost on Alice. They came out, right when the sky opened up and came out playing Rain When I Die. I knew, at 16 that this is a moment you will never forget and I never have. I attended many many concerts, including the Blind Melon one at St Andrews where the girl jumped off the roof but, 93 lollapalooza remains my favorite.
