People shouldn't rip on Phil's vocal here. Layne had a voice nobody could duplicate. This is more about emotion. Phil did great!
Phil has an unique voice as well. Layne is my all time favorite vocalist but I can't imagine him singing songs by Pantera. Yeah, Phil did it great (imo)...in his own style.
Its the same for Phil no1 can duplicate him especially in his early PanterA years..
Awesome
i thought he sounded really good on that song.
@@MLCrow VERY true statement. They are both very unique vocal styles and hard to duplicate.
Phil sounds like hes a monster stuck inside a human body
That’s the best description of Phil’s voice I’ve ever heard.
Excellent observation!
That's the voice of Marlboro reds
The voice of anger, soot and sleep depravation. I am actually impressed by how well he handled this song. You go Phil!
He sounds like a man with a heavy heart.
phil really poured his entire soul into this performance, could tell that this meant a lot to him
Love Phil, he has a pure heart.
Plus the emotions are hard to sing through. 💖
I agree
@@avalondreaming1433 Pure lol. His idol is Aleister Crowley lol. Phil is cool dude with tons of talent. But pure of heart no.
he always does
Phil impressed the fuck out of me with this cover, Layne had a very rare unique voice and he did so well.
bingo
Totally! I was thinking the same thing
1 in 7+billion.
Imagine what prime Phil could have done with this song. Jesus Christ that would be something worth seeing.
And with such a deep ass voice as Phil has... It must of been really tough to get Layne's highs omg!!
Somewhere out there Layne and Dimebag are playing a version of cemetary gates to a crowd.
@M Via neither can Phil tbf
ShadowKiller571 youre acting like he could never.
@M Via what makes you say that
brysonz 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you're corny af!
:))))
Can we just give Cantrell his credit already?..
TheFutureIsFucked Cantrell is genius.. and what a freaking sound. Nobody sounds like AIC
Word.
TheFutureIsFucked YESSSS!!!
Cantrell is a bad man! I saw him in like, 96, alone, booked as AIC. But Layne was sick and couldnt play. So, instead of cancelling, Jerry played that shit without Layne and it was still amazing!! Sik
I did, like almost 30 years ago lol
You’re late to the party...
Both of these guys had lost brothers who they had spent years playing with. Through pain and loss, they come together to deliver an ode to their fallen. It’s quite poetic honestly.
Not Duff
@@williamberry8895 apparently they weren't talking about duff.
Absolutely, its only about brothership and honoring
and that the song is written as a tribute to Andy Wood of Mother Love Bone. Poetic Justice.
@@williamberry8895 Scott Weiland
I personally like Phil's energy. His voice is rough and imperfect, but he sings like he means it. His version is a fitting tribute to Layne's truth and unique genius.
Imperfect? What are you talking about?
if there is one thing you can say about Phil, its that hes genuine
Not going to lie. When I was around 10 I thought AIC had ONE SINGER. Layne & Jerry's voices melted into one voice.
I thought the same when I first got into them, just recently found out it’s only Jerry on Don’t Follow up until the chorus
AIC IS BETTER THAN NIRVANA SPYFOX!
Absolutely
Obviously Phil is a genius at singing like Phil Anselmo, but I'm damn impressed by how many of the original notes he hit, and how clear the words were.
Agreed 100%
I think it would have been 100 times better if he would have been more Phil and just let it rip! I think was trying to be respectful and keep it Lane-ish but Phil’s gotta be Phil! Not to shabby though, har act to follow, Lane is one of the greatest of all time.....
@@ZO5150 yeah I clicked, because I assumed he would do it "full-Phil", and it would either be amazing or a total train wreck. Maybe if Layne were still alive he would have been willing to take a bigger risk like, but I don't know, a lot of 90s bands wrote lyrics that were just words that were supposed to sound cool together, but Pantera and AIC songs usually sound like they are about something or somebody in particular, even if you cant tell what or who. Maybe that demands the more conservative interpretation.
The disappointing thing for me is that there was a time when he would have had a flawless performance hitting all the notes while still using his heavy style but the guy killed his voice before he even left his prime
Absolutely!
I think Phil did a damn good job. I was concerned when people were ripping on him but I'm a Pantera and Alice in Chains fan so I think he did good.
dude sounds killer
Phil could sing as high as Chris Cornell when he first joined, you can hear it on a few songs on Cowboys from Hell. It's just from Vulgar Display of Power he started singing lower and wrecking his voice more over the years. Drugs didn't help much either.
I'll say this; Phil didn't sing his best here, but what he did was transfer the emotion very well, which in this case I feel was better than technique or prowess. You can tell he felt this song, when he sang "so I made a big mistake, try to see it over my way" you can feel that he feels that too. There couldn't have been a better aic song for Phil to do, and it was great. Cool to see duff rocking with them as well.
Plus this ain't 1991 Phil Anselmo either, cause if it was....
@@darkriff777 And that black tooth grin that got him blackout drunk.
Jerry's voice is like a hot knife cutting through butter. So fkn smooth.
When a tribute is done by bandmates and friends.... it doesn't matter what it sounds like. This is awesome.
Exactely :-)
Exactly,,finally someone understands!!
well this actually sounds amazing...
well put!
It kinda DOES matter what it sounds like. I LOVE all these guys onstage but Phil doesn't fit. It pains me to hear him try to make his voice go along with AIC. I love the theory just not the execution.
Phil looks so focused, he want to pay good rispect to layne
My thoughts exactly. You could tell he was taking this seriously, and wanted to show respect.
cause Layne is white
@@oBryanResende huh ?
The dude has been through a lot and has done of bunch of dumb shit but hes always had a side of him that is calming and gentle. Thankfully nowadays hes been out of trouble and focusing on music and himself.
@@oBryanResende LMAO
I'd love to hear an album by Phil and Alice in Chains. That shit would slay

Phil did this song justice, he has power, control and his voice is amazing.
Honestly I love the way Phil sings this he puts his own style with it and it works very well

And Andrew Wood. The song was originally a tribute to him.
Have you noticed that all of them can create a band in heaven or whatever they are?
And Demri..

Phil Anselmo is brave to even attempt to sing Layne's parts.

Phil nailed this. Those are real vocals, and he channeled Layne.
So difficult to sing, shows what a goddamn musician Phil is.
I was surprised when I saw him play guitar on a Metallica Cover when Dimebag was singing, too.
Quit playing 😆😆😆
Невероятно хорошо спел.
@@seanknox8962 nah, this is good chit. 👍 raw music is far better than autotuned BS
This is not perfect, but it would take a voice impersonator and a lot of work to replicate the sound that was the way that Layne used to sing. And the person that was singing is just that, a Singer. And he did a damn good job.
Alice and Pantera. 2 amazing bands I can not get enough of.
GUNS ROSES 💙🎵
@@wagnermenezes6576 nope
Layne was one of a kind. The power, range and clarity is about impossible to match. Phil's got some guts to get up there and get after this. Good job considering.
Meh
No one can replicate Layne’s voice, but this guy approximated it.
He did it in his own style and made it work, that's why he's great.
As much as I know James Hetfield is good, it really pains to hear his cover. 😭 Phil gave justice to this.

I was at this gig. They had to record it twice because Mike had the wrong bass on the first take, I think it was tuned down for Them Bones. He got pissed and threw it off the stage. It was a pretty cool rock moment.
Wasn't this the VH1 special where AIC was looking for their new singer? I thought it was pretty cool and different. I can only remember a few of the guest singers but Phil Anselmo and Ann and Nancy Wilson were a couple of them.

I love Phil's vocals! Layne was wonderful and nobody is trying to duplicate him.
I think Phil did a fine job filling in, he did his best and put it all into the performance👍🤘
Lol
People seem to forget that this was when Phil was past his prime and was still battling alcoholism and other drug problems after he got out of his horribly bad heroin addiction. If he sang this back in 1992 he would’ve dominated it. He had so much range back in the day
He sounds a bit different now that you say, but really, the first thought was that all this is so powerfull, I thought I was listening to Pantera. Phil sounds so great, I really loved his singing. As I said, it just sounds like Pantera, so cool.
Looks like theres something going on with the monitors in his ear. Either way he did really good.
People on about Phil’s voice but I guarantee a prime Phil would smash this tune. He is well out of his prime here.
Yeah, like the voice he had in Cemetery Gates.
This was when he wasn’t taking care of himself and was addicted to drugs and alcohol, his voice was super strained like a deeper voiced Steve-O up until recently, that being said he sounds 100xs better now.
If this was 1990-1994 phil it'd be insane
Phil always was garbage live
Dirk King you cant do better so shut the fuck up hater
There will will never be another voice like Layne but Phil did a hell of a job paying tribute.
Sean is killer on drums. What a great piece of the band he is. 👍
highlights of this performance
0:38 first time jerry/phil harmonize together
3:02 the way he closes the "Left you here aloooone" in that Down-style, southern/bluesy way
3:22 "IF. I. WOULD." the raw power in his scream while hitting perfectly those notes is unbelievable
IF I WOULD gave me chills
0:33 let's all take a moment for both AIC and Pantera and acknowledge the chills we got when these two blended their vocals.
That totally got me too.
Right!! Phil nailed it and their vocals Blended so well. Phil did a great job on this song. He tried to make it a point to hit as many of Layne's notes as possible. Well done
Damn Phil’s voice is monstrous..
Lets all just appreciate that……1. Both Phil and Layne are (were) powerful & talented frontmen-each in their own way. 2. It takes guts to sing another’s original song - knowing how amazing they were and be able to pass on some of that same emotion. 3. Jerry, Sean , and Mike are, pure and simple- rock Gods. 4. Duff is one of the sweetest fellas out there.
Wow, crazy good comment. On point. And i want to add that Duff is not only sweet fellas but very good bassist, also singer, drummer and guitarist. Preety amazing talent.
Such a fitting song for Phil to sing. He's been through it all and has also lost people. That was awesome.
You can tell this really meant a lot to Jerry by the way he hugged Phil at the end. Extra squeeze❤️
Fuckin' A, man. They got history.

Personally I think he's horrible.
@@christar9527 It's your oppinion. I respect that, obviously Phil's style has nothing to do with Layne's, but I like the result.
@@elenaevenflow5280 I like it too, hard song for Phil and the fact that he doesn't sing that often, he nails the tone of the song.
Great tribute to both Layne and Dimebag... R.I.P. to both... A crossover you'd never expect to see... Phil and Jerry poured their heart and soul into the performance... you can tell it meant a lot to them!
We should all appreciate the power of Layne's vocals because it's not easy hitting those notes for even a good singer
Layne is my all time favorite vocalist. Phil did pretty good. Singing like Layne is dam near impossible, but Phil’s version is not bad.

Dude, Phil is way past his prime here. We never got to hear post-prime Staley, so we don't know how bad it might have been.
Everybody saying "this just shows how good Layne was if even Phil's struggling with this song". I am not taking anything away from Layne or from the difficulty of performing this song properly, but Phil Anselmo was well beyond his prime here. He recently got off the heroin and his voice was completely destroyed after heavy shouting and careless incorrect singing over many years. If Layne sang the type of music Phil was singing, his voiced would have burnt out a long time ago and he wouldn't be able to reach those highs either. Phil Anselmo would have NAILED it perfectly if he performed this in 1988 - 1996.
Exactly. Phil is still with us also, we should give him his credit too
That's the real problem, that he didn't learned vocal techniques and blew his voice thinking it was normal
He was recovering from spinal fusions and years of being inactive after dimes death .
What if he didn’t practice this song enough before this show! This type of songs needs proper rehearsals to master them.
lol, Layne was more powerful singing then 90% of the musician who were around his time . Remeber people saying you could hear his voice over the speakers if you were close enough . Sound just came out of him strong and he was just a power house vocally
Phil did great. There's a reason why Layne is a legend to many of us where his vocals are concerned.
Phil Anselmo is an absolute legend.
Phil is a metal God 🤘 Cantrell is a musical genius 🤘
Phil did a fantastic job. This song is really different from his normal vocal style and out of his range but he nailed it. I would love to see Phil from the 80's and early 90's during his prime sing this song.
The amount of lives I've seen of Phil I have never seen him 1. look like this on stage 2. perfect a cover like this. insane \m/
Jerry is always amazing! His last solo album is also fantastic! Love him so much and miss Layne Stayle every single day!

No offense but I don’t see it that way! I’m pleasantly surprised big time! I saw the Alice with Phil and thought no way! But upon watching and hearing it I thought he pulled off! Listen to the cheering crowd at the end! That kinda says it all! Is it layne? No not even close but it’s not bad at all! Phil aside from singing a way different style of rock did a great job in his own style! I never heard him fall out of tune or hit a note that tortured the ears! Is he on the level of layne ? Hell yes he is! Is he a better singer ? Hell no! But he is still a great singer!

When band members get on stage with other band members to pay tribute to other band members that we have lost over the years and still continue to pay tribute is the most honorable and respectful thing they could do to honor those that are gone no matter if they can sing their songs almost as good or not good at all is besides the point of what really matters and what really matters is that not only to honor them and their memories but to keep their life and talents alive because of what they gave their fans to honer their talents and who they truly were in life and not death and when I see and hear all these different brands all these different voices singing the songs of those that have passed truly brings so much joy to my heart and makes me cry every time no matter who is performing them it's love for their friends and brothers and sisters that's what it's all about even the ones who sing the lost ones songs like shit it's still beautiful last week Gavin Rossdale and Bush did a performance in Vegas and when they left going thru Reno Gavin got on stage with Breaking Benjamin and Korn to sing in Layne's honer sang Would ? And did a very good damn job at it
Perfect rendition.Straight from the heart.

So much of the credit for AIC has gone to Layne, but, come on, do not underestimate how much of that credit should go to Cantrell.
You can see that in the newer AIC as well.
True. Talking about AIC (Layne era)...way the most Jerry and Layne wrote (alone) or co-wrote (sometimes with others) the lyrics but Cantrell wrote almost all the music (more than 90%).
