Amazing, but still, a BMW from same year with a 2.9 L engine. Made 200 hp 👍 I always thought it was funny how those big engines made so little power, compared to European cars 😅🤷 But, nothing sounds like a good old American V8 💪😉
Last time I dealt with a low compression cammed up Ford big block it liked 38-40 degrees total timing all in by about 2600-2800 rpm. So I think you’re on the right track there. But the biggest help was a stall converter to keep the rpm’s upon acceleration to compensate for the anemic compression. But being a Jag owner, you know this already! Haha!
My folks had a 69 ford station wagon when I was young . It had a 429 in it... My cousin was living with us while he attended a tech school for auto repair... When the wagon started running rough , my cousin volunteered to fix er'. He put a Holly 4 barrel , and a few other go fast items.. My dad was Not about wasting money on such , but my cousin got all the parts for free... My dad roated the "snow treads" when he drove it .. Then looked seriously at me & my cousin & asked, what the hell did yall do to my wagon ?? A few yrs later I rebuilt that 429 & dropped it into my 72 F-100 , short box with a 4 speed outta something.. Man, I always loved these c'atrucks. Ford or Chevy flavor. I had a 71 Elco 350/350 a couple years ago but it was in really bad shape body and floor wise. Ran like a top though. Taught me a lot about carbs (thanks Thunderhead298) . Had short gears, I really hated going 70 at 3300+ rpm. I am more of a cruiser guy I guess.
@@PoleBarnGarageThat Ranchero may have a smog Era timing chain in it which retards it 8 degrees at the cam if you put a 69 back timing set in it it should make about 300hp with a mountain of torque even if it's dove-3 heads with dished pistons if it's dove-c heads with dished pistons it should be around 370hp
Love to see more of this Ranchero, Dalton! You know, being it's a '73 engine with dished pistons, it may be a case of too much cam and not enough compression. Also, those stock exhaust manifolds are restrictive. Probably wouldn't hurt to throw some cheap headers on it. 36 degrees in by 3 grand is pretty spot on. Looking forward to the next vid!
Rancheros especially and Ford and Mercury in general are great deals for people looking to buy a classic car. They sell for about a fourth of the equivalent Mopar. You would not believe how cheap I got mine.
I had a 1973 Ford Ranchero with the 351 V-8 engine and automatic transmission . That was in Wisconsin where there is allot of road salt used . I had to do allot of work such as replaced the floorboards in the cab and replace the entire bed floor with support members . Plus a bit of body replacement along the bottom sides of it . I even switched the seats in it to better and more comfortable seats . And I loved my Ford Ranchero and drove it for many years ! That was the most comfortable riding almost truck vehicle I ever owned back in 1985 and onward . It had a real frame under it and I beefed-up the rear suspension and added heavy-duty air shocks to it so it would carry a bit more weight , like a small pick-up truck but drove and rode more comfortable like a car . I have a 67 Ford Ranchero with a 289 Hi-Po attached to a Muncie 4 sp rockcrusher transmission. Picked it up in 88 outside of Ft. Bragg for $200. It was a basket case with the motor and tranny sitting in the bed. Over the last 36 years, I've replaced/repaired the floor boards, cab corners, new after market fenders, the motor, tires, brakes, steering and suspension, refurbished the interior with bucket seats (to accommodate the floor shift), new exhaust and a coat of primer. I had the engine bored .30 over, got a valve job done on the heads, put new bearings, pistons, rings, oil pump water pump, mild camshaft, and a new holley 650 carb. The only thing I did to the tranny was put new gaskets and seals on it. I have no idea how much I spent on it. Most of the work was done in the 90's after I got out of the Army. My best guess is I probably spent around $3K on it. It still sits in the barn. I drive it on occasion during the summer. It's fast, it's loud, it gets looks, and most importantly, it's exempt from NY vehicle inspections because of it's age. Neighbor keeps bugging me to sell it because he had one in High School and loved it. He's up to $12,000, which is a pretty fair price for a modified/custom. I can't sell it though. I know I would suffer from Seller's remorse.
The '73 429 only produced 211 bhp @ 4450 rpm and 327 lb ft @ 2600 rpm. So, a total rebuild would make this beast live up to it's potential. Who knows what cam is in it right now, but with the right one and other parts, this legend will show what it was truly made for, BIG HORSE POWER!! I think it's worth hanging onto!
Hahaha the "hot for teacher" exhaust note for sure! You looked so excited when she first fired up... genuine. Awesome video, loving the content Dalton, Thanks!
It looks like the deal of the century. It was cool watching you guys and your shenanigans 😎 you definitely need to do more work this ranchero. I'm glad the safety buzzer works 😂✌️🇺🇲
OMG, you guys found my dream Ranchero. Put a real carb, fuel pump, distributor and give her one of your pole barn special paint jobs. I am soooooo jealous. I really miss my 72 Ranchero, even if it had an anemic 250/3 speed manual combo.
Back in the late 1980's when I was in college my dad picked up a '70 LTD convertible, triple white, with a factory 429. It didn't sound as cool as Basura Blanco does, but when you kicked it into passing gear and all 4 barrels opened it sounded like it was going to inhale the hood. My buddies and I had a great time road tripping it with the top down.
Not sure the yr of that block but even with D0VE-C heads it probably has the taller deck block with dish pistons that don't go to the top & could have a very wide quench distance making it unusable & possibly a lower compression ratio. Very early 71 (D1) blocks were still short deck at 10.300. By 72 all of them were 10.322. So that might be some of what's holding it back??
She is a beast my friend.My uncle had a 72 Grand torino,with a 302.Quarter vinyl roof.No speed demon.Just a big cruiser,me and my three brothers and sister,could sit,side by side.
I'm so excited that this channel is growing so well, you definitely deserve it. Definitely the most entertaining dude doing this style of video. I mean the only channel classy enough to drive a jagg
Where I live (N42W77.5) bugs get bad in summer. Back in 90, my first summer back here, I bought one of those bug lights b/c we had bought a house with a pond (and a whole lot of acreage) not 100 ft from the back door. The first night it was out there I had to go out the next morning with a grain shovel to pick up the pile of dead ones under it. I ordered 2 more. By the next summer we could actually enjoy our back yard and pond at the close of a work day. They are still out there all three. Never taken down form there 10 ft tall post for the last 23 yr. I have bought other to put else where and I have never had one of them fail yet. Veery Very will made to this day. Bought one this yr and one three yrs ago. both doing well.
This timing is sooo good! I just got a new job and am going to be saving up for this exact model year of ranchero because they’re just badass, rock on brother 🤙
The 73's came with D3VE heads with much lower compression and a different chamber design. They also went from adjustable screw in stud mounted rockers to pedestal mounted non-adjustable. So out of the box with a simple swap to the older heads brings back alot of the power. He needs to date code the bottom end, the newer ones had different deck heights I believe, but not sure on the years of those changes. There were also different push rod lengths for different years.
I had a Nike battery behind my house in New Jersey. It was so wild, all these busted up concrete buildings and rail tracks. They just dumped asphalt over the silo doors to keep people out of them. Love the channel!
Dalton, this seventy three year old man has reached a limit like the "gentlemans truck" Ranchero as I just was placed on hospice. Like you, your chevy and I am ford but any and all rigs have a sweet running rig that convinces ya to drive the other kids rig. I am now stuck using "91" octane or not run so dang good... trust me... I have a language for this that is stronger than the "PG" rating!!! I sure do like seeing the truck or car truck as not too many of these toy pickups look good even to me, a ford man at that. I am sure that you are not fond of all el Camano's that they made. As long as it got me to work, and safe, comfortable, plus made it kinda fun, well I drove a damn rambler. I do believe they called them AMX and son... that was one fun S.O.B!
When it fired up I totally understood the giddy laughter. When I bought my 2wd 76 short bed Silverado (500$ from a friend of a friend), I knew it was rusty, and probably needed alot, but it would start. I put a battery in it, and 5 gallons of gas, and a pair of front tires and drove it home. It seemed to run kinda crappy at first, the baffles had blown out of the mufflers, and pushed up against the back and choked it. , It also had a 600 Edelbrock on it..... So I put on a 750 demon, and cut the rotten mufflers off and slapped on a pair of cheap knockoff flowmasters. It didn't sound stock. When I took the seat out I found a receipt from a speed shop for a rebuilt 454, .30 over flat top Pistons, "torquer stage 2" iron heads, Holley street dominator intake, "performance" cam......and then another receipt from a year later from the same speed shop saying,"metal found in trans pan" customer declined repair. When I was done with the th400 it came off the back of the motor ....with all the bolts still in the block. Broke the bell housing all the way off.
Oh and by the way you started talking about timing.... I set mine up at what the timing light said was 50....but it was because of the Ballancer slipped
Honestly since this thing is so clean I'd like to see you take this as far as you are planning to go with the Silver Dollar. Get it running real nice and do one of your good body and paint jobs on it. This thing would be a fun thing to cruise around with. Great video as always.
I had a '70 Torino with that 429 and a Hurst 4 speed from the factory. That thing made awesome torque. Didn't even need 1st or 2nd. She'd pass anything but a gas station.
Hell yes!!! Love it. My ex father in law had a 68 or 69 el Camino SS that was just awesome. Red with the black racing stripes down the hood and roof. I think you have something here and it looks like fun
Yes, more please. I had a 73 gt that we transplanted a 460 from a mercury Marquis. Had to convert it to electric fuel pump to keep it from vapor locking, but it was awesome to drive.
Let’s see everyone lose their mind. I have a 1977 F150 short bed 4x4 with a factory 429 -4V if I remember correctly it’s a 67 Thunder Jet maybe wrong on the engine year. But all factory all with a factory 6” lift. It was a BigFoot thing they did with 10 trucks. Dealership tried trading me a new for it, back around 2000. Getting ready to put it back on the road for my son. Factory Bigfoot blue. Lol Nice ride you got there! Great show!
Wow you got a great deal on that Ranchero! There is a former Nike Ajax missile site a few miles from my house. They made an elementary school out of the barracks and the silos are still beneath the parking lot. They last opened it in 2005 and inspected them for environmental safety. It was featured in all the local papers at the time.
My Dad bougt new in California 1973 Rancheo 500 Metal flake green and GT Wheels nice one Nice score on that Ranchero always wanted one with a 429. I had a 65 Deluxe 289 hypo. And a 72 ranchero 500 with a 351 Windsor and had a 79 Brougham with the 351 Cleveland.
Great video as usual. I love this Ranchero already. Im not 100% sure but that year of 429 i think has lower compression and more restrictive heads than previous years. The best years of the 429 made around 360 horsepower stock. But with some work it can be snappy
Ahh noo bro u sold out to solder sticks just kidding I would have to it is not cheap trying to keep up on all the rides .love the show and how u spend time with your son keep it up man
Score! You were close on the axle ratio...mine had 2.47:1 until I bought a big heavy boat and put 3.50:1 van 3rd member in it. That was fun unless it was raining. 780cfm vacuum secondary (Holley) works good if fuel injection is not an option. The stock axle is good if you like cruising at 105mph with the AC blasting. Leir Sigler 9 way power seats from a Cobra Mustang will brighten the interior up. Once that couch is gone there is enough room for a B&M shifter and you could still land light aircraft in there.
I am from Dillsboro Indiana and we have one of those old “Nike Bases” here. PBG was correct about the elevators, and it’s funny how he said how cool it would be to make a shop out it. That’s exactly what was done with ours. It was purchased by a local family, and they converted it into a home, and garage/ shop where the elevator is located.
yes yes yes more please my very first car was a 1973 Ford Ranchero Squire Deluxe now there is a hidden compartment behind the seat under the front part of the truck bed you get to it from inside the car should have a spare tire and all the jacking tools but there might be some hidden treasures in there . that car brought back so many memories thank you very much,
12:55 - Ah man, the cap, only ever seen the damn things in pictures... So cool. Absolutely smoking deal, couldn't imagine anything this good or cool up here in Canada.
I know I'm a newer fan/subscriber, but goddamn the Jag jokes are NEVER going to get old! 😂 It makes me want to find my own V12 XJS and, y'know, modernize literally the entire thing and keep the V12, so I can make the same dumbass jokes all day. This Ranchero is SICK!

Genuinely LOL'd at "I don't feel tardy..." "We're going to come back, WITH BEER, and..." Excellent suggestion, the latter. The VH callback was gold Jerry. Gold.
I had to giggle….my Dad bought many a Ford at Fair City Ford in Pomona🤣They had great candy for us kiddos while Dad was wheelin’ and dealin’🤣 ……and I was born at Pomona Valley Community Hospital, Pomona, Ca in 1963👍🏻 Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend😊
Really cool ranchero honestly, clean it up some more and a lil paint and it’d be pretty sweet. It’d be cool with the Torino anyway, keep up the great work.
You mentioned a couple of times that you're in Indiana. Is it hot out there? My Grandpa told me that they moved there during the depression to get away from the riots and civil unrest in Chicago. He told me that one day in 1930, it got so hot that all of the corn in the fields started popping, and the cows all thought it was snowing and they froze to death. You don't have anything like that happening there now do you? I figured if you did I would have seen it on the news.
@@PoleBarnGarage OK, my mistake, I must have heard you say you were in Indiana while you were on a road trip (?) Still I couldn't resist passing along Grandpa's joke. Maybe you could try it out on somebody you know from there. Grandpa could rattle off stuff like that all day. He was pretty good.
I remember having problems with a 396 that I put in a square body. I couldn’t get any hp out of it. Vacuum advance hose was the problem but the transmission was worn out and I didn’t have time to resolve the problem.

OMG, you guys found my dream Ranchero. Put a real carb, fuel pump, distributor and give her one of your pole barn special paint jobs. I am soooooo jealous. I really miss my 72 Ranchero, even if it had an anemic 250/3 speed manual combo.
Absolutely look forward to seeing another video of this, an nothing saying you can't flip it once you get the fuel system sorted
Definitely looking forward to seeing more on this rig. I have a feeling that a new carburetor will really make a difference.
I found myself watching all your old videos. Absolutely love your comedy and JDs attitude. Good stuff man
Not sure the yr of that block but even with D0VE-C heads it probably has the taller deck block with dish pistons that don't go to the top & could have a very wide quench distance making it unusable & possibly a lower compression ratio. Very early 71 (D1) blocks were still short deck at 10.300. By 72 all of them were 10.322. So that might be some of what's holding it back??
Oh no doubt it's a smogger. Was really hoping to see some flat tops in there at minimum
NICE THANK YOU! Always loved the Ranchero!
A 600 cfm carb is knocking that thing down to small block potential
That engine from the factory made a whooping 201hp lol
impressive
The 73's came with D3VE heads with much lower compression and a different chamber design. They also went from adjustable screw in stud mounted rockers to pedestal mounted non-adjustable. So out of the box with a simple swap to the older heads brings back alot of the power. He needs to date code the bottom end, the newer ones had different deck heights I believe, but not sure on the years of those changes. There were also different push rod lengths for different years.
Definitely more on this gem! Hope you can bring out all her horses!
Awesome car! Can’t wait to see more on it.
Niiiice. Most excited I’ve seen you when it started and I don’t blame you, that thing is sick.
I had a Nike battery behind my house in New Jersey. It was so wild, all these busted up concrete buildings and rail tracks. They just dumped asphalt over the silo doors to keep people out of them. Love the channel!
Careful burning off those tars. You might start a far. 😊
Love the Ranchero, would love to see more. Keep up the great work!
I dont think ive seen you as excited over a car than this one. That was pure joy & excitement when she turned over. :D
Paint this thing red like the "striped tomato from starsky and hutch." The 70s one... obviously...
I like original patina! With a little oil or wax!
Love it. Been finding myself saying it. Because,I have a Jag
Dalton, that Ranchero is fantastic! Please please restore it!!!
She's a keeper! It would be cool to see it restores and painted. Follow that list you guys found!!
Great video. In my opinion for $2500 that peach is the deal of the month.
I agree!
+1. 1973 was early smog years. Restrictive intake, restrictive heads, low compression ratio. And 385 blocks LOVE to breathe.
@@Nick-ue7iw yeah I thought so since it was an early smog era engine.
A well prepared 850cfm sloshbowl and some rear diff attention, would change its temperment a bit, i imagine. Cool find
Absolutely love those old Rancheros. My friend's dad had one when I was about 17 and we drove the crap out of that thing.
I like bench! Comfort is key
Inexpensive big block ford content? that sounds great.
I watched this video a week ago. I can't get this line 7:23 out of my head since. Classic!
yes yes yes more please my very first car was a 1973 Ford Ranchero Squire Deluxe now there is a hidden compartment behind the seat under the front part of the truck bed you get to it from inside the car should have a spare tire and all the jacking tools but there might be some hidden treasures in there . that car brought back so many memories thank you very much,
I guess it’s cool for a ranchero. Wonder if that 429 would fit into the blue Torino or the red topless l t d ?
I enjoy watching people do things I can't do. But you make it even more fun! ❤❤❤❤❤. Happy Mother's Day!
Sure. Show us more on this car. It's cool looking. And of course you want to keep her. It's you!! I love the door decals.
12:55 - Ah man, the cap, only ever seen the damn things in pictures... So cool.
Absolutely smoking deal, couldn't imagine anything this good or cool up here in Canada.
we need "I have a jag!" tshirts and window stickers haha
I know I'm a newer fan/subscriber, but goddamn the Jag jokes are NEVER going to get old! 😂 It makes me want to find my own V12 XJS and, y'know, modernize literally the entire thing and keep the V12, so I can make the same dumbass jokes all day. This Ranchero is SICK!
That was a Great Year, Mr. & Mrs. Cole we’re Blessed with Me. I Wish I Held up like She did that is a Sweet Gem. In my Mind, Fairly Rare 429 Factory Big Block Original Car.
Genuinely LOL'd at "I don't feel tardy..."
"We're going to come back, WITH BEER, and..."
Excellent suggestion, the latter. The VH callback was gold Jerry. Gold.
I had to giggle….my Dad bought many a Ford at Fair City Ford in Pomona🤣They had great candy for us kiddos while Dad was wheelin’ and dealin’🤣
……and I was born at Pomona Valley Community Hospital, Pomona, Ca in 1963👍🏻
Thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend😊
Nice to see this one back on the road, now get it back to its former glory with a Pole Barn detail!!
Really cool ranchero honestly, clean it up some more and a lil paint and it’d be pretty sweet. It’d be cool with the Torino anyway, keep up the great work.
I love how you reference Hot for Teacher. I thought I was the only one who made that reference. It does sound pretty amazing.
Watching this as I build the 351 Cleveland for my 71 Mach 1. Keep the Ford stuff coming!!!!
I have a 68 429 and a 5 speed to put in my 65 country sedan station wagon. This makes me itch to get going on her! Love the content!
Stand back, men. He knows what he's doing. He owns a Jag(TM).
It never gets old 😂
Around 1975, mom had a Mercury Marque wagon with a 429 in it. I loved that car.
I never get tired of you saying “Jag” 🤣
You mentioned a couple of times that you're in Indiana. Is it hot out there? My Grandpa told me that they moved there during the depression to get away from the riots and civil unrest in Chicago.
He told me that one day in 1930, it got so hot that all of the corn in the fields started popping, and the cows all thought it was snowing and they froze to death. You don't have anything like that happening there now do you? I figured if you did I would have seen it on the news.
I live in Missouri, definitely never said I've been from Indiana lol
@@PoleBarnGarage OK, my mistake, I must have heard you say you were in Indiana while you were on a road trip (?) Still I couldn't resist passing along Grandpa's joke. Maybe you could try it out on somebody you know from there. Grandpa could rattle off stuff like that all day. He was pretty good.
Great video. It would be great to see more on the Ranchero
I remember having problems with a 396 that I put in a square body. I couldn’t get any hp out of it. Vacuum advance hose was the problem but the transmission was worn out and I didn’t have time to resolve the problem.
Vacuum advance just advances the timing at and just off idle. If your initial and centrifugal advance is set correctly it won't matter
It would idle fine but it wouldn’t pull itself up a hill
That's centrifugal advance. You set, base, then total timing with that. Likely the vac advance was just crutching other issues
