      @bigscrewg That doesn't always work though. There's so much grease and junk everywhere, alot of it looks fresh. A completely clean engine block guarantees you'll find it immediately. I can't tell you how many times when I was working as a mechanic that stuff was misdiagnosed because you just couldn't really tell what was going on because of the decades of layers of fluids.

    I think you got yourself a little turned around on the base timing. The valves determine if it's the compression or the exhaust stroke, not the pistons. As long as the timing marks on the gears line up, the timing has to be correct. The ignition timing could be way off though, which could be adjusted by pulling the distributor and spinning the distributor gear to mesh in a new location on the cam. I usually figure these old engines need around 50psi of compression to run at all.

    • @BudgetBuildz
      @BudgetBuildz  2 роки тому +41

      When marks were lined up, the valves were open. When I turned it another revolution the valves were closed as the piston was coming up to the top(compression stroke) and the timing mark was opposite(on cam). Once flipped everything lined up, valves closed, timing marks and piston at TDC(just like setting base timing). As far as the distributor goes…it’s way off lol. These only have a single position to be dropped in, the only way to relocate is to drop the oil pump(or if some has the cam gear off and installed improperly). All in all though, someone had been all over it….🤦‍♂️ Thanks for watching man, and throwing in a comment! I should’ve explained a bit more thoroughly as to not mix up. Oh and the compression went from 10-20 to 40-50 with the flip, then to almost 100 with the Lucas 😅

    • @stew6338
      @stew6338 2 роки тому +15

      100% correct Wes. You did not need to rotate the cam gear.

    • @harryrimmer6830
      @harryrimmer6830 2 роки тому +13

      If my memory serves me, the correct compression for an F4 is 90-110 psi. Since you got a reading of 100 psi on at least one cylinder (after the valves were lapped), the cam timing had to be right. You would not have gotten acceptable compression otherwise.

    • @BudgetBuildz
      @BudgetBuildz  2 роки тому +7

      @@harryrimmer6830 I had 10-20 psi of compression after everything was said and done, after switching the timing I had 40-50. Then over 100 psi with the Lucas. It may all be complete coincidence and it was just slowly working up compression. In my experience, when assembling an engine, the number 1 cylinder needs to be at TDC and the timing marks need to line up. This one did not. I will mention from the get go it didn’t really try to pop off until I messed with the cam gear and it attempted to pop on atleast one or two cylinders.

    Years ago my first wife's father had a Willys station wagon that was turned into a flat bed truck! His Willys had a completely spent inline four cylinder in it, so he yanked it out completely!! After making his own adapter plate, he installed an inline 6 out of a Chevy Camaro under the hood, and cut off what was left of the body behind the front doors, and welded the hood of a 1972 LTD to the rear of the cab turning it into a pick up cab!! The rest of the drive train was in good working order, and the frame was solid on the truck, and the Camaro engine ran well in it!!
    BUT what he did to it next is what impressed me the most about it, which was a neighbor gave him a dead Allis Chalmers tractor with the complete hydraulics system still intact on it!! So he made a few brackets and mounted the tractors hydraulics system to the Willys and the Camaro inline motor!! And the truck was "ALMOST complete" less one last thing he did to it!! He then found a friend who was selling a snow plow from a 1976 Ford F series truck and modified the frame of the plow to fit the Willys, and after a trip to NAPA to have them make a couple of custom hydraulic hoses that mated the plow ram set up to the Allis Chalmers hydraulic system, he had a plow trust that to this day he still uses!! The flatbed part of the truck was built extremely "basic", using timbers across the frame rails and planks of hardwood that he sawed himself (all rough cut) to make the bed!!

    I saw two "bad idea" practices here. 1) Using fine abrasives around the cylinders with the pistons in and no good way to get them clear afterwards. Great way to vertically hone a cylinder so that compression is more difficult to achieve. 2) Lapping valves with a drill. This encourages the lapping abrasive to create rings in the valves and valve seats, also lowering compression. Hand lapping works, doesn't take long, and gets the surfaces properly lapped because of the reversing action at the end of each hand stroke that keep the abrasive from honing the seat with grooves. You don't need or want power tools to do this.
    Plus, because the cam turns once for every two turns of the crankshaft, those who say the timing was right in the first place are correct. The distributor (or the placement of wires on it) may have been 180 degrees out, though. The right way to do that is to confirm compression stroke, then confirm that the points are opening with the rotor pointed at 1 on the cap when approaching TDC.

    It had to be the ignition timing cause like Wes said if the timing marks line up on the cam and crank gears it has to be right. I think it was a combination of things from sitting so long. I had an old F head jeep years ago it had lots of Torq, if that was rebuilt it would climb a building if you keep it from flipping over

      It's nice to see something come back to life.
      Old timer tip - it was always recommended not to use sandpaper on points.
      It can leave grit which causes points to get burned.
      Use a points file to ensure clean metal... And flatness.
      2 or 3 strokes is usually enough.
      Follow with a piece of card stock to polish.
      Properly dressed points perform best and will last many years if cared for properly.

    The thing is, you’re “making do” with that weak ass 6 volt starting system. Sometimes, you have to switch to a 12 volt battery temporarily, at least until you get it running good. Then you can switch back to the 6 volt battery. The 6 volt battery isn’t always strong enough to give a long dormant engine the “push” it needs. No, if you do it RIGHT, switching to a 12 volt battery won’t burn the car down. There are a few critical things you have to upgrade to 12 volts to go with the higher amperage. Once this is accomplished, EVERYTHING in the car will work better, not just the starting!😉

    The lightening and hurricane 4 and 6 cylinder engines were great .... but heres a secret not many jeep fans even know about unless you've own one or 12 of these like I have ... the 1957 283 Chevy small blocks with the large compacity oil pan and filter will just bolt right in the 1965 302/327 with the engine mounts that are closer to your timing gear rather than in the middle of the block at freeze plugs will bolt right in and bolt up to that Spicer 3speed, if not you have a Dana 4 low with you 6 cylinder but most came with a Spicer 3speed, if ot was an auxiliary truck it would have a 3speed behind that 3speed also gear reduced auxiliaries on a transfer case that ran a PTO out the back of those trucks , most of them were Forrest Management vehicles or Fire Department off road use vehicles from 48 to 52... after that they were all civilian use vehicles, I've Owned a 1948 , 51, bunch of 55s 57s 61, 62s and maybe 3 or 4 64s maybe more , but from 1946 to 1964 it is the ONLY truck that every part and every body panels are 95% the same minus a few changes to the grille over the years 46-64 cabs are interchangeable 100% , besides body styling of the trim and lines everything is the same every bolt every nut screw , the wagons and jeepster were different for a span of only a decade but the truck , but parts were actually pretty easy to get for a while because most of these trucks were retired Forrest Management trucks , Fire departments had them, they were sought after by the logging industry, they were ex military base trucks during the Korean War and there were millions of them , up until the 80s and 90s people started scrapping thier farm junk...

    You know why that carb was so cheap? There are hundreds of thousands of them sitting in warehouses that were manufactured during WWII to keep the little Go-Devil engines running. To put it into perspective, due to wartime production it is estimated we can keep the Pratt & Whitney R-1830's radial engines in the world's remaining DC-3 fleet operational for the next 130 years. Meaning, DC-3's may very well have 100 to 150 year service lives.

    Had a 1960 pickup with 300hp 6 cylinder that was same body style. No power steering and large tires really built the arms up. They said the old Willy’s had ditch to ditch steering. Found you have to retorque the steering bolts every time it starts to travel (month to two months) . I also had a 1956 CJ-5 with the F-4 Hurricane motor back in 1990s parts were still easily available. Had PTO driven winch on the CJ ran off the transfer case cabled the front to a old oak and pulled a semi back on the road with it. The trucker said I wouldn’t have believed unless he saw it a antique Jeep pulling a full loaded semi back on the road.

There weren't too many with the W/O raised letters on the tail gate... mine has a 289 swap and T-10... what rear-end I wonder... mine has a Timkin rear-end with 5.38's.. so yea, currently working on the B/W Overdrive it has on it.. :).. oh yea... i see the tailgate now... nice.. does it have the 16" wheels i wonder... those are very hard to come by these days..

    in 1977 I saved a 53 Willys wagon from the junk yard. problem was the 4 cylinder had blown up and had been discarded already. Good news they had a 55 Willys pickup they were transplanting an Old 455 into and they had a working 6 cylinder. I paid them a little money to hook up the 6. had to remove the fan shroud 4 cylinder to 6 cylinder. The radiator was strapped to the front bumper right next to the 2 gal gas can. Fired up and I was in business. Drove it in the forest of oregon for a couple weeks then brought it back to Phoenix. What great fun.

    I had a similar problem with my 1956 CJ6. I bought it with a seized engine. But I must admit, I cheated. I converted it to 12v and put in a V4 2.2L Ford engine, with a matching 4 speed gbox
    Still got the old engine sitting in an oil skin wrap in a big air tight tub. I'll rebuild it one day, may be.

    When I was a kid on the farm? We had a 1942 Jeep. Did dad tradered off for a 1960 cabover? I think it was AC60 and that's why I learned how to drive and that was an. Nice truck and I would like to have one like that back again. I know where there's a one ton. But the guy won't sell it. And it's just sitting in the shed rusty away. And I don't know why people do that. So good luck, and we have one here. In Cedar Rapids Iowa to the guy put a 350 in it. And it is very well In great shape.

    A lot of engines are not seized-The rings are binding in cylinder ridges. If they’re not too bad you can tow the car in gear or bump the starter to free it up. If there bad Marvel Oil or vinegar mixed with diesel fuel may work.
    Shade tree mechanics must have been learning on this engine!! If you have timing-fuel/air/spark it should start! Next time cover the engine bay with cloths to catch splattering engine oil!! GITERDUN

    My dad had one of those back in the 50s. His was a 1949 2WD. His engine was a flathead 4 Cyl. It had 3-speed shift on the floor. I used to drive it some as a teenager. I always wanted to drop a small block chevy V8 in it! Never got to though. Nowadays, since I'm more mature, and assuming I still had the truck, I would put a small Ford engine with an auto tranny in it.
