  • Price the DEWALT DCMW290H1 40-Volt Brushless Mower Review | 3-in-1 Cordless Lawn Kit on Amazon: amzn.to/2LmmPdm
    DEWALT Battery Lawn Mower - The DEWALT DCMW290H1 is the new 40-volt 20" lawnmower the can mulch, bag or discharge the clippings out of the rear of the mower. Currently, the 40-volt line is designed more for landscapers and contractors and the rear discharge would go along with that, allowing for easy use around seed beds and landscaping. The 40-volt battery line-up is currently available in 4.0Ah, 6.0Ah, and 7.5Ah battery packs. The battery pack included with this mower is a 6.0Ah pack. The DEWALT 40V MAX Lawn Mower is rated by Dewalt to cut up to 1/4 acre and from our testing, the runtime equates to about 12-14 minutes for an average height cut. There is a single lever that allows the user to adjust the height of the cut from 1.5" to almost 3.5". The wheels do have ball bearings in them and the build quality seems good. The metal deck is thin to be lightweight but also seems strong. The 40-volt battery used in this mower is comparable with the other DEWALT 40-volt outdoor power equipment.
    Features
    Brushless motor for high power output & runtime
    3-in-1: mulching, bagging, and rear discharging
    20 in. metal deck
    Single lever height adjustment from 1.5 - 3.4 in
    Folding handle and lift handles for easy transport and compact storage
    40-Volt Performance
    Since the DEWALT 40-volt battery is designated for commercial use in DEWALT's line-up of outdoor power equipment, we have some pretty high expectations for this mower. The large battery pack contains 3 sets of cells that each equal 40-volts. That is many more cells than the 20-volt line or even the FlexVolt line that is 60-volt. Even with the larger battery pack, the DEWALT 40-volt lawn mower is only able to run for about 12-14 minutes on one charge of a 6.0Ah battery pack. For most city lots, that would mean a homeowner would need to have at least 2 batteries. A landscaping contractor should easily be able to trim a yard and charge the battery again on their way to the next job. That would not be the case if it was a larger commercial job.
    The lawn mower power is amazing and maybe what is killing some of the runtimes. We were able to cut 12-18" grass with very few stalls and no overheating of the 40-volt 6.0Ah battery. There is always a balance between power and runtime and this unit definitely has more power. That is a good thing if this lawn mower would be used as a trimmer. Ditch banks and taller grass is no challenge for this mower. We will go out on a limb and say that this is the most powerful battery operated mower we have ever used. The long grass we cut in the video shows the jaw-dropping performance this mower provides.
    Build quality seems to be right up at the top of the pack with a nice metal deck that is both strong and lightweight. The deck is deep to allow the grass to mutch effectively and also bag well. There are two positions for the push handle that accommodate both shorter and taller users. Storage of this lawn mower is simple and effective as it can store standing up, therefore taking up a 1/4 of the ground space of a similarly sized gas mower.
    Overall, this mower seems to have the power for normal mowing but lacks just a bit in the runtime category. It is priced right, so one could pick up another battery compared to the price of the closest competitor, the EGO 56-volt. DEWALT came out swinging with this mower and constructed it very well!

    ***owner review***
    This review is spot on. It is a quality build and it feels like a true Dewalt tool that you would come to expect. It cuts very well and I was impressed with the bagging feature. However, the run time is horrible. With the bag on I was only getting 12 minutes of run time. It takes up to 2 hours to recharge for just another 12 minutes of run time. That to me is unacceptable for a $400 mower.
    I've cleaned it up and will be putting it back in a box to head back to the store here shortly. This is the first Dewalt tool I'll be returning to the store.
    Dewalt, please improve the run time. This is a great idea and really good quality but not up to speed with the run time from your competitors.

    Picked up a 2x20v De WALT, (can use either the 20 or 40 volt batteries) Jun2 2021, which mowed through 1 meter high grass without bogging down in mulch mode. Started with 2 bars on both batteries and ran for 31 minutes in the high grass. Dropped back in to charger for another bar, to finish the area being done. Ran for another15 minutes, completed and battery done (good timing). Run life is a little short at the moment. New device to me, will likely pickup another set of batteries. Good too, can share batteries with other De WALT power tools.

    much better unit than my 18v x 2 Flexvolt unit (DCMW564T2-TE) that I just returned for refund today, used once and very disappointed. Mine cut 225m2 only and stopped, with 2 bars on the batteries still showing. My grass was summer dry and way more sparse than your demo shots. I mulched and there was no zero grass left on the ground. My mower is rated 18v 6A or 54v 2A. My guess is that it runs at 54v 2A full time and then overheats. It ran for 25mins max. I used the 30day money back. I bought it bundled with the blower and loved the blower.
    Positives:
    Build quality is very good,
    the handle does NOT rattle at the hinge like so many do
    wheels have bearings so it rolls sweetly
    Packs away and stands vertically for storage
    Cuts very well and mulching is now a real thing for me
    Blower is awesomely strong
    Negatives:
    Run time is a disaster. It should come with 54v 12A battery and it would then be a killer.
    Background: I just retired my 30+yr old ROVER 2-stroke 18" mower and wanted to get into the 21st century. Dewalt has the brand image, but.......

      What are you getting for run time? All I need a 21" walk behind for really is just trimming around trees, bushes, and yard perimeter since I have a lawn tractor. I don't bag or mulch with mine.
    I prop the rear cover open with a bungee about 4~5 inches and take the plug out. It basically makes it a rear/left discharge.
    I never try to mow in tall grass. I usually mow every 3 or 4 maybe 5 days during spring. Cutting very little and often and the battery lasts the whole yard.
    Yard size is a regular size city lot, about 5000 sq ft. When the grass is in full-on grow mode I get about 90 to 95% of a mow done with the 6 ah battery. With the 7.5 ah battery, I have never used the battery up.

      I did not notice that at 3:09 I just hopped out into the garage and found that nut to be loose allowing the ball bearings to slide around a bit. I feel that these wheels are pretty fair when you compare this to other models in the same price range. If you pay more, you seem to get a more rubber type wheel where this is more like hard plastic.

      No, because they are really the same mower. I believe we reviewed the more cost effective and longer running one out of the box. If one were to have larger FlexVolt batteries, that would make the 20-volt be a bit better, but purchasing them for the mower would cost major money.

How is your mower holding up after one year? Looking at one as a gift for a older gentleman that just loves his lawn but has to be careful in not exerting himself. The lawn is smaller but has parts that slope. Thank you in advance. I have a ton of batteries 4, 6's and 9's. Happy to throw in an extra battery for him as long as it is light and easy to push and no problems with the occasional water.

    For bagging you really need a high lift blade, the blades that are on most of today's mowers are what they call a 3 in 1 blade, they don't do any of those tasks very well so its best to have the right blade for your specific type of mowing, whether it be mulching, side discharge, or bagging...side discharge and bagging you really need a good high lift blade to throw those clippings, where with mulching you want the blade to create a cyclonic action to toss the clippings up under the deck and keep doing so to keep chopping them into finer and finer pieces in which a dedicated mulching blade is the way to go.
    Could you throw a high lift blade on that lawn mower and do your bagging test again and see what it does?

  • @loucifer323

    People got to understand these battery operated mowers are small yards, these are for the yards that you really don't need a gas powered mower but you don't want to use a manual push mower these are perfect for that, the EGO is probably the best for these battery mowers but the Dewalt is definitely the most powerful, the EGO starts off using lower power and than in thick grass it powers up my brother bought the EGO he has small yard and he just is able to finish his yard but if he lets get to long it stalled a lot

    Which mower would you recommend the Kobalt 80 volt versus the DeWalt 40-volt? I am on the fence of getting the DeWalt except the run time is what kills it for me. The Kobalt 80 volt has 2 Amp Hour batteries versus the DeWalt has a 6 amp hour batteries

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому +1

      JUAN HERNANDEZ watt hours is what really matters and that is volts x amp hours. So the DeWalt has 40 x 6=240 and the Kobalt has 80x2= 160. One would think from there the DeWalt would be better. If you are researching Kobalt, they are a rebranded Greenworks. A 2Ah battery will also be a 1p battery meaning it only has one set of cell that equal that voltage. The dewat batter could be wired up as 2ah, but it would be 120 volts since it is a 3p battery.

      There is no doubt that the Dewalt is built more like a traditional lawn mower, but the runtime with it is very short. So, unless you want to invest in many, many batteries and change them every 15 minutes, the Dewalt is not much of a lawn mower and more of a trimmer. The dewalt has mad power. The EGO has a lot more computerized control and has made many, many more lawnmowers. There are small things on the EGO that helps it to perform better. They have a runtime of 45 minutes. I do not know anything about your yard or how you will use this, so I am trying to give you all the general info.

      40V for yard equipment only ( trimmer, hedge, chain saw, blower and mower), 36v for power tools only (drill, rotary hammer, saw, grinder, impact wrench), look different plugs, 36v for other countries than North America

    Why this model is not self propelled 🤔
    it is not too heavy to push ??

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому

      It is not heavy to push at all. I have to guess that the self-propelled model would cost more and use more battery. That would raise the price point higher than others on the market and the runtime is lacking.

      Two 12Ah would work well. Much less than that and I feel it might not have the power or runtime we all want.

      After seeing the 20v version of this mower I think milwaukee should make one that makes 2 m18 batteries into a 36v, 20v doesnt seem to be enough juice

    Why dewalt don’t use extra battery with more charge like on e-bikes. Voltage is not the problem, need more Amps and running time. For me this mower is not an alternative for gas mower. When they design a new deck and big battery, it would be awesome.

  • @eosjoe565
    @eosjoe565 6 років тому +1

    Interesting. DeWalt has two nearly identical push mowers, one takes (2) 20V and the other takes (1) 40V battery. They cost the same and they both get similar short run times. Seems very confusing to the consumer. I saw a review of the 20V version on another site and they never even mentioned that there was a 40V single battery version. The built quality does seem nice. It's a shame the batteries are $200.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому +2

      We opted to go with the 40-Volt version because Dewalt states those are more for commercial users and the 40-volt trimmers are way better than the 20-volt models. This mower is pretty much the same unit, it just has a different battery housing. Everyone is going over the 20-volt model, so we tried to be different.

    • @eosjoe565
      @eosjoe565 6 років тому +1

      I really appreciate that you mentioned both mowers and I'm sure others will too. It looks like a single 40V/4AH battery costs about the same as two 20V/5AH batteries. I believe the 20V mower only comes with a single battery charger.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому +3

      The 20-volt does only come with one charger. The 20-volt does currently have an advantage IF you use two 9.0 or 12.0 Ah Flexvolt batteries, but now that raises the price to well over 600 dollars!!!!!

    • @hardhittinz
      @hardhittinz 6 років тому +1

      I really wanna see 2 things the run time of the 20x2 mower with 2 9.0ah flexvolts and also the 40 volt run time with the 7.5ah battery,since you do have the 40 volt mower have you tried it with the 7.5ah battery if so how much longer did it run?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  6 років тому

      I know I have a 7.5Ah battery, but I could not find it to add it to the review. My bet is that the 9.0 or 12.0Ah batteries in the 20-volt machine would run longer than the 40-volt 7.5Ah.

      I have this mower with the 6Ah battery that came with it and I am getting more like 20 minutes of runtime. My house is on a 1/4 lot and I can cut the front and back yards on one charge. You could upgrade to the 7.5Ah to get more time but the battery alone is around $230.

      Steve Hasebroock that makes no sense. If you mean ope, The 40v ope is for pros, the 20v line is for diy...the 60v is an upgrade over 20v. If your taking tools, no 20v/18v tool can come close to the 60v line of tools...yes,Not even Milwaukee new line w a 12ah....sorry not close. It’s up to the buyer which line you want to be in....

    • @slhasebroock
      @slhasebroock 6 років тому +3

      I can almost guarantee over the years I have bought more Dewalt tools then you. I have been through just about every cordless line they have made, and then been left high and dry when they quit an alleged professional line in the past and let those of us that bought the then pro line without a source for batteries. If the 40 volt is for pros, why are they spending all the money promoting the 60 volt line to the pros. Good as cordless for the jobsite they say.
      I now have, if you count the tools I can't get batteries for, about 6 or so different lines of cordless Dewalt tools and batteries. I hope the 20/60volt line sticks, their past history has been if it doesn't sell to their numbers, they dump it and don't care about those that supported the line in the beginning. I get it, technology changes and gets better, but at least support the lines of past at least for a while, so we at least have some chance of wearing the discontinued tools out. Hard to use or wear out when you can't get batteries for them!

    • @thebigdoghimself
      @thebigdoghimself 6 років тому +2

      I agree with Steve, remember the 24v tools they had about eight years ago? They should have used the 60v batts for the mowers even if it required two of them.

      if you're a fanboy and don't know anything about DC motors/batteries.
      then yeah, sure.
      Even Makita X2 beats Dewalt in a few categories. Chainsaw, Recip, Blower, 1-9/16" SDS Max Rotary Hammer.
      Milwaukee is going to beat Dewalt in plenty of categories. And then people will finally have to face the facts that higher voltage doesn't automatically mean it's better.

    40 volts just does not have the run time of a 56 volt of the same amp hour never mind the power. 12 minutes of runtime is not worth it even if you had 3 batteries set aside most people would still not buy this, its to niche. I think if dewalt ramped down the power setting it would last longer and had a ramp up mode.
