    I just bought this mower. I'm pretty invested in the 20V DeWalt battery system as well. The weed wacker is great, and of course all of the hand tools have worked very well. I have a normal size urban lot - front and back yards are about 40 x 50 feet each. I can do both on one charge and still have two lights out of the three. Lots of juice left over to power the weed wacker and blower, although I do have extra batteries for them. This mower stand on its end nicely out of the way in the garage. I've been very pleased with it.

      Which 20V batteries are you using, to get this performance? Are you still happy with this?
      Do you own a mix of 20V and FlexVolt 60V batteries? If so, could you possibly try running the mower with a mix of them, to see whether it's happy with that?

    I bought the DeWalt lawnmower for my home and it's great. Smaller lawn than yours but I never wait until it's so friggin long like yours. Mow often and it's great.

    Dewalt should : Sell the mower with zero batteries, and the 9 Amp hour x 2 with dual rapid charger kit separately.
    If you already have Dewalt tools and batteries, you don't need the two 5 amp hour batteries.
    Also, if it's an open lot, just remove the bagger - you are not maintaining a golf course, and it will run longer without the extra weight.

    I really liked the video, you're the only one I've seen who's shown us what the different batteries are capable of with this mower. Totally agree that if you're not already invested in DeWalt then there's not much of a point. That's DeWalt's thing though is they want you to invest in their platform and they reward you for it by having compatibility between their lines of products.

    I'm thinking about buying one of these. But if I do I'm going to get some flex volts because I'd like to be able to use them with my dewalt drill / impact gun. I'm gonna have to check them out in the store first. But you are right. That is ALLOT, allot. Of money. Just in batteries alone. That you could buy a good lawn mower with .

    Really helpful review in some ways, even if it’s probably nothing like the size of lawn or the extreme length of grass that most people push their mower over. Would be interesting to see what you thought of it if you tried using it before the grass got so, so long. I think the fact that the first set of batteries overheated rather than went flat says a lot about how much they were being overworked - but at least the cut out design saved you from toasting them permanently! Watched your other video on the Dewalt strimmer / weedwhacker which you were impressed with. Made me think that, if you bought the mower for the ditch then either (a) use it to cut the ditch and your grass before it gets beyond "normal" length, or (b) if it’s 12 inches long then use the strimmer / weewhacker to cut it down and then go over it with the mower to cut and pick up the grass you’d cut down and maybe it would work better?

  • @terryhastings1695

    Good review - to be fair that's very thick. and you have a rode on - so surely you would use that for the bulk flat. and the 2 9Ah you have would do the ditches in 3 or 4 intervals - assuming you keep it short through the summer

    My lawn is about a 1/4 of your lawn so this dewalt mower would be perfect for me since I already own 2 flexvolt 9Ah batteries. Looked into the EGO but I hate charging different batteries. I would use the 5Ah batteries that comes with the mower for my Dewalt blower, string and hedge trimmer.

      Joseph Tirado I think this would be a great mower for you then ! I also reviewed the string trimmer and so far keeping both !

  • @superspeeder
    @superspeeder 6 років тому +1

    You should look at the Ego mowers. 18/20V platforms are not up to the power requirements of lawn mowers, that's why your batteries got so hot. Ego designed their batteries to stay cool under load, so they're cool enough to charge right out of the tool when dead. Their fan cooled charger charges them immediately.
    I have Makita 18V tools and they're great, but I skipped the Makita 36V (18x2) lawnmower and went for Ego, and that was the right choice.

  • @davidderfus3462

    This was a good review. I have a lot of DeWALT 20v tools, so I was very interested in this lawnmower. However, reading up on it, I went with the 40v DeWALT Lawn mower. It came with a 40v 6Ah battery, but I purchased an additional 40v 7.5Ah battery. I don’t have a huge yard, but the the 6Ah battery fell just a bit short, thats why I got the 7.5Ah battery. I love it, light weight, easy to push, and easy height adjustment. I have a corded Black & Decker that I used before, and got tired of dragging the cord around. I can completely understand why you might want to go with gas for a bigger lawn though. My wife really likes the fact that it doesn’t need gas or oil. No starting issues, no winterising, just put the battery in and go.

    • @ksong1496
      @ksong1496 6 років тому +1

      Well... Actually, 20Vx2 mower and 40V mower both have the same motor. Same part number and everything the same, except the battery compartment parts.
      40V model comes with bigger battery (240Wh vs. 100Whx2) so, 40V model should last about 20% longer for the price, but that's about the only difference.

    • @davidderfus3462
      @davidderfus3462 6 років тому +2

      Kyong Song Ya, you are correct. But there is one other difference that I'm a little disappointed about. My 40v doesn't have that nice power gage on the back of the mower showing the power level of the battery. It's not like it is very difficult to open the panel and look, just would be nice not to have to stop.

    Ya u have to be in the Dewalt platform to make this purchase worth it. I have the propelled Ego with a 56v 7ah battery and I can do my whole property without the batteries dyeing plus it looks like that Dewalt bag is kind of small. Maybe they'll make a 60V lawn mower with two 12ah batteries in a kit so the price of the batteries. Btw I have the 60V chainsaw as well and I also love it. Not going back to gas lol

      Your right being in the Dewalt platform all ready is the key, I have a total of 24 20v batteries ranging from 2 to 9 amp hr so for me it was the logical choice. Rather then getting into another batter platform, I absolutely love mine, it cut every bit as nice as my 6.5 briggs and stratton, and with all my batteries I could mow the entire neighborhood

    I wonder if a liquid cooling system for the batteries would extend lifespan enough to warrant the additional/cost/complexity vs just adding cells. The airflow as the blade pushes cuttings into the bag could provide cooling for fins, so only a small pump would require power. The more thick/wet the grass, the better the cooling.

    much better unit than my 18v x 2 Flexvolt unit (DCMW564T2-XE) that I just returned for refund today, used once and very disappointed. Mine cut 225m2 only and stopped, with 2 bars on the batteries still showing. My grass was summer dry and way more sparse than your demo shots. I mulched and there was no zero grass left on the ground. My mower is rated 18v 6A or 54v 2A. My guess is that it runs at 54v 2A full time and then overheats. It ran for 25mins max. I used the 30day money back. I bought it bundled with the blower and loved the blower.
    Positives:
    Build quality is very good,
    the handle does NOT rattle at the hinge like so many do
    wheels have bearings so it rolls sweetly
    Packs away and stands vertically for storage
    Cuts very well and mulching is now a real thing for me
    Blower is awesomely strong
    Negatives:
    Run time is a disaster. It should come with 54v 12A battery and it would then be a killer.
    Background: I just retired my 30+yr old ROVER 2-stroke 18" mower and wanted to get into the 21st century. Dewalt has the brand image, but.......

    I mowed the 1/2 acre yard of my youth each and every week. My ol' man wouldn't tolerate any 'hay' lines or piles of cut grass anywhere. Sometimes I would do a quick criss-cross pattern to help alleviate the problem. The rake was my last, regrettable resort.
    Anyway, the one thing I ALWAYS did, without fail, was to overlap my cuts by about 1/4. One-half if the grass was particularly heavy. I notice everyone on UA-cam barely overlaps at all. No wonder so many lawns look, well, not so great. Go a tad SLOWER and overlap more. My guess is the lack of resistance due to the previously mown grass will balance out the additional time on the batteries.
    Your lawns will look much better.
    Just sayin'....

    I've almost convinced myself to buy this, but I was planning to use a mix of batteries with it - A new 6Ah FlexVolt, and a collection of 2Ah 18Vs that I already own.
    I asked Dewalt and they "advised against mixing batteries", but didn't give any concrete reason. And obviously they're incentivised to get me to buy 2 new FlexVolt batteries :)
    Have you tried running with mix-and-match batteries? Did it power the mower? Did it seem to cause any problems for the batteries?

    Did you charge the 5amp-hour batteries while using the 60v ones? Or where you just letting the 5amp-hour ones cool down? It sounds like a thermal cut-off. I just got this mower myself and those batteries get very hot.

    • @IMRgarage
      @IMRgarage  6 років тому +2

      Nyall I pulled them out at the point I could not use them anymore ! Put them in the shade and did not charge them .i cut with the 60v 9.0ah tell the 60v ran out then I grabbed the 20v 5.0ah batteries that were allowed to cool and got maybe a min out of them !

    • @Nyall
      @Nyall 6 років тому

      I've since got a pair of 6amp-hour flexvolt batteries (came with a circular saw). Their power delivery is much better than the 5amp-hours that came with the mower and the flexvolts run a lot cooler. Which is what I'd expect given how much bigger they are. They are a noticeable upgrade to the mower.

    I think your 5 amp battery would have done better if you mow every week like you should. Plus it looked wet which you said it was . You should mow weekly and mow a dry lawn. If you do it weekly it will not put the strain on the mower unless you like to put the strain on the mower but you will just burn out your batteries faster and it will just cost you more money.

    I've come to a conclusion after having looked at all the options out there. For my 1/2 acre property, a $275 gas mower with a 160cc Honda motor and 22-inch blade made the most sense. You can't really find a sub-$500 battery mower that is capable of doing a decent sized lawn that's cut just weekly on the 2 Ah to 4 Ah batteries they come with. And extra batteries cost hundreds. I see promise on the horizon though -- once the manufacturers put those $600 80V mowers and bump the battery up from 6 Ah to 9 Ah in a kit for around $350, that's when I'll pull the trigger on cordless tech. For now it just is too lame and pricey.

BTW got the mower for $20 at a yard sale with weak batteries...and had picked up 3 more left in the trash with dead batteries.

    You CANNOT expect these things to perform anything like a gas mower in thick/tall grass. And even worse when it is wet. You answered your own question when you said it wouldn't start up in tall grass, you had to tilt it back. And seeing you doing that ditch made me laugh. You need something heavy duty if you plan on letting it get that tall. I used electric for years; you have to mow more often since they aren't great with tall grass. A cordless mower is worse. This thing might be great for someone with a VERY small yard but it is way too pricey if you have to invest in a slew of batteries.
    All the advantages and pros you mentioned for the DeWalt don't make up for the downside issues.

      Spare battery cheaper then that but one battery alone a 4 amp will do more then both your 60v together and u know what the best thing is that the 4 amp battery charges less then 30 min trust me I have all the ego tools your 60v takes days to charge

    Battery operated lawnmower is a terrible investment, if you own a large lot, since it has minimal power and takes much longer to complete the task when compared to a gas mower.

    This is why diy guys should not give reviews. You knew exactly what the outcome would be based on your lawn conditions, before you did the test.
    Do an honest review or don't bother. Misinformation is worse thing you can do....you clearly don't know anything about tools,ope, batteries or pricing..your statements are false.

    • @IMRgarage
      @IMRgarage  6 років тому

      watch the whole video. DIY lol ok buddy lets slap the lawn mower on a bench and read out the specs and cheers to a beer. The first cut with the 20v was pretty close to your avg lawn. If you watch the whole video you will see that when i stopped at 4:49 the grass was about 2" higher then the mower deck. If this mower cant do this its junk.

    • @joeframer9642
      @joeframer9642 6 років тому

      IMR they didn't claim it can do tall grass. The specs are based on normal grass length from week to week, read the disclosure. Obviously your not a DeWalt fan and choose to bash them,it's your right but it's completely a lie. DeWalt makes some of the best tools ever made.

    • @IMRgarage
      @IMRgarage  6 років тому

      dude i have so many dewalt tools it would make your head spin. I have 10 flexvolt batteries alone. Im going to retest the lawnmower this week. The first 3000 sq ft was normal dry grass and if you look at the other reviews they got 7min too lol.

    • @bajamike3803
      @bajamike3803 5 років тому

      IMR I am also a huge fan of dewalt but the mowers need the raw torque of gas. I couldn’t get through a yard and especially if the grass was wet. The thing won’t even start to spin unless you lift it off the ground and that is dangerous.

    • @stupidwapdaggo
      @stupidwapdaggo 5 років тому +1

      that's rich coming from you.
      This mower is a dud. It doesn't matter how the reviewer tested it (not that you even watched the video or listened to what he actually said anyways.) It's also been verified by Workshopaddict and just about every other tool reviewer out there(some of whom do landscaping professionally) that Dewalt has sent this mower to. Those people got free mowers and still had trouble recommending it. It also has bad reviews on Dewalt.com and middling reviews on Amazon.com.
      The fact of the matter is that this thing is an inefficient dud that eats batteries for breakfast. An Ego (and most other battery powered motors) will accomplish more on a per watthour basis.
      Idk why you have to be such a pussy snowflake about it either. Dewalt makes a few duds, just like every other company, big deal.
      Just stop being such a braindead idiot for once. It's sad how you are literally incapable of separating your personal identity from a power tool brand. And that's why you're constantly crying in comments sections whenever somebody shows something that makes Dewalt look bad.
      I can only imagine how bad the power tool industry would become if everybody behaved like you.
