    New Dual Battery Mower - This NEW Dual Battery EGO 21" Self-Propelled mower provides longer run time not only because it has multiple batteries! This the EGO's first BRUSHLESS lawn mower. You will not see the word brushless on this lawnmower but rest assured it is. This lawn mower operated very similar to the dual battery snow blower with what EGO calls PeakPower technology. Basically, the PeakPower technology can determine what battery or batteries (It can run off a single battery) you have in the lawn mower and the software determines the most efficient power draw. This allows users to use multiple batteries for long runtimes and more torque or the ability to run one battery while the other charges. While this new model looks and feels almost exactly like the single battery 21" lawn mower, the difference lies in the motor and the torque it can provide. With two 5.0Ah batteries, one can see upwards of 40% more torque from this unit. that allows you to run some of the upgrades we list below with little effect on runtime!
    This is an expensive unit, due mostly to the cost of the two batteries if you buy the kit. But if you are wanting a nice, powerful and quiet lawn mower to tackle larger lawns, look no further, this is it.
    What is PeakPower Technology?
    This new mower is the second tool from EGO that will run on a single battery or also capable of running off two batteries. EGO calls this technology PeakPower and it is software that is capable of detecting the size of the batteries in the tool. Obviously, the larger the battery, or batteries, the better it will perform. The software will look at the number of cells (battery pack size) that is can pull power from and adjust the amps drawn from the battery, or batteries for optimal performance. This gives the user options if a battery was forgotten to be charged or if one were to possibly go bad. We found that there is little difference between running the unit with a 7.5Ah single battery or two 5.0Ah batteries, but all of our testing was done with the two 5.0Ah batteries that came in the kit.
    LM2142SP Features
    21 self-propelled mower
    Features PeakPower technology for more Torque
    Bare tool or with (2) 5.0Ah batteries and charger
    Variable speed control for Self-Propulsion
    Single lever 6-position deck height adjustment
    Compatible with any EGO 56-Volt battery
    Folds easily for compact storage
    LED headlights
    5-year limited warranty
    Why Go Battery Powered?
    The largest benefits of a battery operated lawn mower are the lack of pull starting, lack of buying gas, lack of changing oil and a significant decrease in noise. While testing out battery operated lawn mowers, Jeff and I are able to have conversations without yelling. Try that with any gas-powered lawn mower and you will be screaming at each other and most of the time not understanding all that is said. The largest downside to a battery-powered unit is, or was runtime. Prior to this model, the average runtime we would see with the single battery EGO was around 45-minutes. With this new unit, one will easily see 75-minutes while mowing a normal lawn. Many people start to look at a small tractor at the point where they are mowing a lawn for over an hour and a half.
    This small battery operated unit opens the door for commercial contractors to use this unit for trimming. The runtime will easily allow for its use on and off while trimming for a normal workday.
    Upgrades
    We have found that is very thin stranded grass that is cut at more than 3" that there can be strands of grass left uncut. This is because the blades on most battery-powered lawn mowers are designed for runtime, not lift. There is a high lift blade available from EGO that will lift the grass and cut better, but it will slightly reduce the runtime of the machine. This new machine will have this blade much better and still give a long runtime. We highly suggest you try this blade with the new mower! The reason why people are complaining about the cut quality is because of the balance of the mower. If you extend the handle all the way and you have a tendency to push down and forward you will push the front of the deck up, breaking the suction causing bad cut quality. make sure you push forward and not down & forward and adjust the handle to a lower position to help. If this does not work get the steel deck EGO, it's better balanced and has better cut quality or just pay $2,400 and the the Mean Green Mower.

    I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my EGO. I have LM2102SP with the single 7.5 battery and that thing doesn't die. Plus, the recharge is fast on the charger they gave me with it. I'm allergic to gas, so this new toy, gave me the freedom to mow and I LOVE THAT! I didn't go with the 750.00 because that price point was too high, I didn't want the steel deck but I LOVED the brushless. But for 500 the 2102 is good for me. I don't use the bagger or the side shoot. I do use the headlights. And the quiet. OH my gosh. The quiet.
    We replaced our trimmer with theirs as well. 2.5 battery but on bigger days, I chuck my 7.5 in the trimmer. Runs better, feels like anyway. And the trimmer charger is slower compared to the mower charger that I got.
    So excited to get the snow blower this year (fingers crossed). Being allergic to gas and now having this line, it's heaven I tell you. Heaven.

    Thanks for the review. with few genuine EGO SelectCut parts and High Lift blade set you can turn this unit into a SelectCut LM2146SP XP when using two 10.0Ah batteries and most likely getting 9.5 ft-lb of torque and 150 minutes of runtime.

    what a wicked machine... I've got on board with ego products, just got the power head + system, weed trimmer end. And 56v chainsaw and LOVE them. I need to get a larger battery tho, still on 2ah, just not enough. I also recently bought a Sur-ron dirt bike and that thing is basically science fiction. I'm so sold on electric, I would dare say, electric/battery power has arrived for 2018, meaning, truly competitive with gas powered stuff. All because of better BMS's and better more efficient brushless motors. Lithium Battery chemistry hasn't changed much but the other stuff has and it made the difference. Electric is just under 1/2 run time as gas now per weight BUT less hassle, less maintenance, easier operation and way less noise. Like I said, LOVE all my electric toys, never going back!

    I purchased an Ego 21 inch push mower (not self propelled) back in 09-2017 and have used it roughly 200-300 times including the use of it on my neighbors lawn. I like it. Not loving it. It's definitely lighter than my old Honda gas powered mower. I always mulch after the first two seasons' cuts.
    It turns out that EGO has a 3-year warranty on their very expensive 5-AMP battery.
    Well this season I learned that the original 5-AMP battery which, came with this mower, wasn't charging any longer. When I called their tech support and tried the troubleshooting tips for about 5 days they requested that I find my original receipts. During that whole time they were making me jump through hoops trying to find an original receipt for replacement if after following their tips the battery still wasn't working. I went through hell to find those receipts and by some miracle I did. I've also learned that if you do not have your receipt you will have a near to impossible battery replacement experience from EGO. And after finding my receipt it took them a little over two weeks to receive the new battery. So far the mower has been keeping up with anything I throw at it including my tall fescue lawn which at one point was over 5 inches tall and very thick.
    (Now for an Oops moment)
    In addition to this I also received as a gift their Edger and string trimmer combo kit. I am scared as hell now when those batteries start to fail. I'm wondering what kind of hell of an experience they'll be putting me through again since this time I didn't receive a receipt.
    I was thinking about upgrading to the self propelled double battery version of the new EGO 21" mower but I think I will pass on that, and refrain from purchasing any more EGO products and move on to something else until I hear EGO has fixed their replacement program.

    I replaced a 2015 5-amp push EGO with its 2021 equivalent - LM2101. What I’ve noticed is that even on the lowest blade setting, the 2021 doesn’t cut as low as the 2015 did. I suspect that they may have raised the housing of the 2021 models in order to accommodate the twin-blade configuration. Bottom line on battery-powered mowers: the longer the warranty the better. I had to have the 2015 repaired after 3 years (took 5 weeks) and it failed again into its 6th year (out of warranty). So rather than spend the $325 to repair the 2015, I opted to spend $399 for a new 2021 model. I went with the EGO mainly because of its (exclusive ?) 5-year warranty.

    Fair review, thanks.
    I just bought the AEG 58V 4AH bundle, Mower AUD$799 with 16" Chainsaw skin included, then added the Blower Skin for a further AUD$60. I chose it over the EGO 19" because I received more for the $$ spend. Also the AEG has 2 x 58V batteries on board so you can hot swap and be charging the 2nd while still mowing. Also reportedly runs up to 60min, so should cut my 300m2 (3230sqft).
    I did buy the Dewalt 2 x 18V 6AH mower and blower bundle for AUD$799 BUT.. the mower only cut 225m2 (2421.88 sq Ft) and then stopped. Great build but the batteries are a POS and most disappointed. Fortunately I used the 30day money back and took a refund.
    I like the reviews I see for the EGO but they are that bit more expensive and I read a few issues with the handles not locking and the plastic desk, hopefully I am not eating my words in 6months. cheers

    Great review as always, fellas! EGO makes the best electric mowers (battery or otherwise) on the market, and I'm glad they're refreshing their product lineups. Really wish the dual-battery was a brushless mower, but honestly - I cut residential and the current motor is fine. If I cut commercial, I might lean towards the steel deck. I love my EGO mower. I too replaced my Honda. I am currently gas free. No more buying gas, changing oil, changing spark plugs, etc... One thing to note, at around 6:55 in the video, you show it upright. You can see it tilting a little. If you raise the deck 100%, it will sit straight up (and more flush against a wall). You two may know that but I wanted to mention in case anyone else was concerned about the lean.

    I have 3000 sq. ft. of lawn so the single battery works perfect for my yard with over 25% of battery remaining when I finish. The extra torque would be better but the only concern I have is the stock blade which it sounds like still is the same issue with the new mower. Having a newer brush-less motor would be nice as well but I don't really see any benefit of those motors other than long term maintenance of the motor. The self propelled motors work fine on the series two models I find I only need to use it sparingly as per coming up hills and at time don't use it too much being the mower is light.

    You state that this is the only EGO mower with a brushless motor. I guess I had come to assume they were all brushless so I just checked on the EGO website and the only mower they claim comes with a "Hi-Efficiency Brushless Motor" is the unit with a steel deck, model LM2022SP. Most all of the cordless tool manufacturers are producing brushless motor powered tools for bump in power and run time as well as reduced maintenance. With the much touted quality and success of the EGO OPE line of tools and my love of my EGO carbon fiber string trimmer, with a brushless motor, I guess I was assuming a little to much. You know what they say about assuming.

    With a gas mower it's important to factor in the cost of maintenance and fuel. The ego mowers seem have a relatively high cost up front but the electricity to charge the batteries is way less than the gasoline to fuel a traditional mower and maintenance on the ego is just a matter of a few drops of oil in the wheel and drive axle bearing from time to time. No spark plugs, no oil changes, no air filters, no fussy carbs to tune up, no breakdowns from alcohol in the fuel supply, etc. So that extra cost for batteries can be offset within a few years by a significantly reduced cost operation.

    Gas is dead! It won't be long until we see landscaping companies going all electric. EGO makes doing yard work fun. It has made my life a whole lot more enjoyable. Dealing with gas, it would sometimes take 30 - 45 minutes to start a lawn mower or a trimmer. Not to mention it makes your garage smell like gas. I no longer have to drive to the gas station to get gas. If the battery runs out I just charge it and I am good to go in about 30 minutes to an hour. I could be doing something productive in the meantime rather than driving to get gas or spending and hour trying to get the damn things to just start. Electic all the way!

      I am a ego lawnmower owner myself though their snowblower sucks. You need to stop being delusional as electric is good for homeowners but not when you need all day power and capability through all sorts of grasses. Lithium ion batteries also have reduced performance in heat and it takes longer to charge them as the charger cools them down. Commercial companies don't have time for all of that.
      It could work for edging and leaf blowing with high capacity batteries. I have see this combination with gas mowers.

    I think more people would go battery powered if the cost was not so ridiculously high. I have a cheap gas mower, paid $150 on clearance 4 years ago. I would have to figure the cost of gas oil and maintenance over 4 years but I think gas wins. A 3-year warranty on batteries is good but if they fail after that they cost as much as the mower. I confident my gas mower will run at least another 4 years.

    I paid 800 for my Honda walk behind in 2006 and it has a Xenoy (sp?) plastic deck and no issues. It’s hydrostatic, but the best part is the lever that allows me to adjust between bag and mulch and anywhere in between. I’d love to see Honda release something battery powered. Great review! Hey on the LM2102SP, when using the rear wheel drive system, when you release the drive lever you actually have to push the mower a little forward in order to pull the mower back so the wheels don't lock, The wheel lock feature is a safety feature I guess (I hate that it does that). So my question is does this new models wheels still lock like on the LM2102SP when you want to pull the mower back and do you still have to push the mower a little forward in order to pull the mower back? We have videos out on both mowers. Ryobi will be more inexpensive up front, but in the long run, it would be more expensive because they have 1/3 of the runtime and you would need a lot of batteries. I would go for EGO here because of better batteries and a better build quality. I firmly believe you will pay more upfront but it will be less expensive overall. EGO has a powerhead that will allow for a string trimmer, edger, pole saw, and a few other attachments.

    A lot of folks would be put off by the plastic deck of many of the cordless electrics. The molding and plastic purity technology and designed structure using it for these types of plastics has come come a long way in the last 2 decades. I have worked on a lot of structural plastic framed medical machines in my 35 year career as a biomedical engineering technician for Hines VA Hospital (in suburbs of Chicago). From early on to my last few years ending in Nov 2009, the difference in structural integrity was amazing. I think these guys are wrong about uniqueness of the brushless motor in this model. Though it may be of an advanced design, EVERY homeowner grade cordless electric yard equipment item made in the last several years uses brushless DC motors.

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  5 років тому

      Sorry, but not entirely true about brushless in every piece of yard equipment. EGO still has a lawn mower that is NOT brushless and there are many other lawn mowers on the market that are brushed because of the power demands and getting a brushless motor to work in that situation. The tides are changing, but not as fast as what you are stating.

    • @billw1044
      @billw1044 6 років тому +1

      Denise, the 20 inch EGO mower you refer to, which is also $750 at HD as you point out, is the model LM2022 made with a steel deck vs the plastic deck the other two, 21 inch, EGO mowers are made with. So if you look at EGO's website you will see that they make three different models of lawn mower. The two 21inch unit are mostly identical, with the main difference being that the LM2102 ($550 at HD)
      has one slot for a battery and it comes with the 7.5Ah battery and the other 21inch unit, LM2142 (the one reviewed here & $750 at HD) has two slots for batteries and it comes with two 5.0Ah batteries. And as you point out, per EGO's website only the steel deck model, LM2022, has the only brushless motor of the group. My assumption is that the steel deck unit is aimed more at the pro-market and I think that's the one I will get.
      It also has a slightly higher rpm than the other two at 3000 vs 2800.

    • @billw1044
      @billw1044 6 років тому +1

      I should have also mentioned that the steel deck unit, LM2022, has only one slot for a battery and this unit comes with one 7.5Ah battery.

    • @msdmjohnson64
      @msdmjohnson64 6 років тому

      so which do you recommend?

    • @billw1044
      @billw1044 6 років тому

      Denise, I still think I lean towards the steel deck unit, model LM2022SP, with the brushless motor. But I also think you need to think about your individual needs. The lure of the LM2142SP, the one reviewed in this post, has the two 5.0Ah batteries for a total 10Ahs and a potential of 33% greater run time over the other models with just one 7.5Ah battery. But do you need this? How big is your yard? Another advantage to getting the unit with the two 5.0Ah batteries is that you can use them in other EGO equipment, such as their string trimmer or edger. While you can also use the 7.5Ah battery in the other equipment too, things are starting to get much heavier with a hand held piece of equipment using EGO's largest battery. So like most things in life, it's about a compromise and which compromise works best for you. Good luck and happy mowing.

    • @billw1044
      @billw1044 6 років тому +2

      I need to make a correction here. Per EGO's website, they NOW say that the dual battery unit, model LM2142SP (reviewed above), does have a brushless motor. As I and others had refuted, I could only find that the steel decked unit, model LM2022SP, was listed as having a brushless motor on EGO's own website. A week ago I had carefully poured over both the general descriptions and the listed specifications for each model, as well as downloading the manual of each, and at that time I could only find that the steel decked LM2022SP listed with a brushless motor. So either I was blind last week or EGO had failed to properly list the specs on the dual batteried LM2142SP. At any rate Workshop Addict had the info correct all along and I apologize for my error and posting otherwise.

    Compared LM2142SP vs LM2102SP. The 2142 has dual 5.0 ah batteries and 2102 has one 7.5 ah. 2142 is their only brushless motor in the plastic mower line-up. The 2142 also has a 1200 watt motor vs 1000 watt brushed moter in the 2102. Brushless will require even less maintenance than brushed motor. Brushless is also a little more efficient. I would like to see a head to head on the LM 2102 sp 7.5 ah vs kobalt 80v 6 ah brushless 600.00 mower.

    I have had my mower for over a year. I have to say I love the mower but hate the way it cuts. The problem that I and others that I have spoken with are that the front of the mower is too light and bounces when you are cutting. This causes a poor cut quality and forces you to sometimes double cut everything. I have a 15' x 100 stretch of lawn that is very bumpy and it's always challenging to get a decent cut. As I said I am not the only one who has noticed this. Here on UA-cam The Lawn Care Nut also mentioned the poor cut quality and ended up returning his unit.
    I am also disappointed in the fact that they came out with this. I emailed them last year requesting a dual motor unit but expressed my desire to see a WIDE CUT 30" to 33" mower that ran on two batts, not another 21"! I mean WTH? Even when my 5.0 or 7.5 ah batts die, it's not as if swapping a battery is hard or anything.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 6 років тому +1

      Maybe they should move the battery location to the front of the mower? Or add some weights on the front...I've noticed this will regular gas powered mowers too...but with a plastic deck there's even less weight up front so the first bump you hit the thing bounces all over the place.

    • @thebigdoghimself

      I agree the battery trays should have been shifted forward to create less of a bounce effect.

      Does no one else experience poor mulching? It’s not so much an uneven cut as it is a trail of un-mulched grass clippings along the left side of every pass. I have to mow every two or three days in order for it to mulch effectively.

    • @thebigdoghimself
      @thebigdoghimself 6 років тому +1

      I only notice that when I do 2 things. First, when I don't keep the blade sharp. Mine don't stay sharp long and I have to sharpen them at least monthly. Secondly, if the blade is not 100% and the grass is long 5-6" then yes I get a ton of unmulched clippings.

    What I hate about Ego is they lose money on the units themselves, but then charge ridiculous prices on their batteries. Guess what fails first, lawnmower or battery? So over the years you're gonna pay mega bucks for replacing those batteries.

    I am confused. Do you like this mower or not? In your video you seem to give it a four thumbs up rave review but in your comments you are disparaging EGO and hating on them pretty hard. I have a tough time having confidence in your review. Are you being honest in the video... or in your comments? I own several EGO tools and batteries but I need a new mower. Is there a mower that is hands down better than EGO. By that, I mean enough better to switch platforms.

    • @WorkshopAddict

      So, we reviewed the product and it was good. Sucks in tall grass like we said, get a high lift blade, yada yada.... Then a month later it dies. We get another under warranty and that one was dead on arrival. We have since stopped reviewing EGO items because the inverter had high voltage issues and ended up blowing up our inverter and refrigerator circuit boards in my RV. Done with the high priced junk EGO makes.

      @@WorkshopAddict There is some clear personal and/or financial vendetta against EGO. As an everyday home owner with a large yard (0.75 acre), I have had this exact mower since it came out and it has performed flawlessly. Plenty of battery life left after mowing (probably could do it twice). Watch this video & listen to the commentary from @9:21 to @9:35, then read their polar opposite comments on here. Then search the term "EGO" on their channel's main page to see how they stopped even mentioning or including EGO products in any future reviews. Something fishy for future! Did EGO refuse to send you guys free review units or something?

      @@Im2bz2p345 So, to do this video, we went through 2 early production units that had electrical problems. EGO warrantied them and life was good. Stuff happens right? Soon after this, the EGO Nexus blows up our RV circuitry and we tell EGO when it happens and they threaten to sick lawyers on us if we speak about it. We try to review the dual blade that comes out and after 10 minutes of use, it dies. EGO now pays people for positive reviews. We have been asked, but they pay you so you only can feel positive about everything. Your personal feelings do not exist. There is an Army of EGO bots out there protecting the company from the bad press. They are a crappy Chinese company that just wants American dollars.

      @@WorkshopAddict Interesting experiences you had with the brand. I absolutely despise when a company does not stand behind their product, but rather tries to offset their product and support failures by paid reviews/shilling. I own a number of their tools, but haven't had to deal with their warranty or support -- and I hope that I don't have to. I still believe EGO is a leader and innovator in the EV tools industry (other tool manufacturers often try to play catchup). Anyway, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to respond and briefly explain your side of the story.

    The EGO high lift blade should come standard with the mower. The high lift blade combined with the bag has a much better cut quality than the junk 2 in 1 blade the mower came with.

    • @EnochLight
      @EnochLight 6 років тому

      For bagging, I totally agree. But the vast majority of owners mulch, and as it stands, the current blade performs OK. Well enough, anyway.

    • @brenthill5596
      @brenthill5596 6 років тому

      Even without the bag the high lift blade seems to perform as well or better than the 2 in 1 blade. The clippings look about the same but the lawn stands up at attention with the high lift. I still use a mulch kit with G5 gator blades on my 42" mower. I'm thinking about switching it to high lifts and a bagger.

    Noise is probably the only reason someone would buy it. We all had a lawnmower and if it was a good name brand its more than likely its still alive and running well. Im curious if EGO as a company will still be around in 10 years, not to mention the inevitable battery degradation and possibility of finding a proper replacement in lets say 5 years. Its a constant debate.
    For small tools ok, you buy a drill and you are gonna change it anyway in 5 years. But lawnmower and some other bigger machines...you dont buy them every 5 years.
    Just sayin...
