The best video I've found as someone thats had an Alocasia Polly for 3 years. All the other videos I've found are people repotting brand new plants so I was struggling with what I should do with the trunk my plant developed.
You’re so casual and confident with your cutting!😀 I’ve had one of these for just a couple of weeks. Hopefully it will survive and grow this year and maybe next year I can divide. 👍
I just did this about a month ago :-) I did a lot of research and found some helpful videos before "hacking everything to bits" as you say... But this video is by far the most informative I've seen - it has all the info I managed to gather from several sources, and then some. Although I've already finished repotting, dividing, cutting and all that (now I'm just joyfully observing new growth popping up everywhere, in all my different containers!!), I really enjoyed watching your video :) Thanks for the upload!
Brilliant video! Thankyou. I've had this plant for about 3/4 years and it is growing beautifully. I have noticed the pattern where it throws a fourth leaf then the first leaf tends to die, so my plant usually only has three beautiful leaves at one time. Due to this I have often wondered if I'm doing something wrong. However, the fact each new leaf tends to be bigger and stronger shows me there's nothing wrong. Recently I noticed a new nodule growing out of the stem and wondered what this is, now I know it may be an aerial root or a baby? Your video inadvertently taught much about the growth pattern of the alocasia polly and what to expect in the future, which is the information most youtube videos on this plant lack. Now I know how to make my plant (which is my favourite houseplant) have more foliage in the future instead of just the three leaves! Nicely done!
Thank you :) They are such Beautiful plants I can understand why it's your favorite :) And yes you are very lucky if your plant holds onto more than 3 leaves at any given time :) You're a good Plant Parent :)
@@PlantzNThings Thank u! It’s doing really good so far. I’ve been turning the light on my stove hood on at night and sitting my new Polly and a few other plants on the stovetop to soak up some light. 😊
I bought some roots online and planted it but peeled off the dried leaves like you did. I am quite reassured by your video that I did the right thing, so thanks ever so much. It's about two weeks in and the roots have shoots now.
This was very helpful to me I recently bought 3 of these I put one outside and it’s done well and thrived the other 2 I put inside but it’s not as humid and they were not happy and just moved outside hope they perk up. Thanks for all the great tips
Hi, great tutorial. Thanks! I actually like the trunks on mine. Is it ok to leave them tall? I think the foliage canopy and trunks are in good proportion to each other so far.. it looks quite 'polite' lol. Indoor plant.. cold winters here. So I have a little grove of trees indoors. - Thanks again. I subscribed.
Thank you so much. Hard to find information! My stem is one foot tall and yes looks dirty and not pleasant to look at. After watching your video I am confident in what I need to do thank you again!
This was super helpful and educational. I had no idea my pollys will grow like that eventually! Now I'll know how to repot them, make more plants etc. Great video! Looking forward to the update!
Thanks for this great video! This is the first time I’ve watched your videos and already subscribed today. Your explanations are very clear and inspired me to save my plant. Blessings 💙
Dude, best video I've ever seen about Alocasia care which I desperately needed because I love my Pollys. This video made me subscribed, and I'll be looking for you on Insta, but I really hope you do a follow up video on the progress as I'm super invested now lol. I really appreciate all this info on Alocasias as I also have a Low Rider and no one else actually goes in so much depth about their longterm care.
Thanks :) I actually kept my polly too wet this summer... so its dormant right now... the tips are still firm and looks like it will start growing again soon... Low rider is such a cool plant... mine in the house is a mealie bug magnet... I have already sprayed it down and wiped the leaves a few times... I might need to fully unpot it and rinse the roots... but there are so many hiding spots on these plants...lol
@@PlantzNThings well at least with these plants having bulbs, it's like they give us extra chances to get it right. I do love the Low Rider, but it was mislabeled as a Frydek and it was really young so it was a couple weeks before I discovered it wasn't and that was disappointing. I just moved it back indoors and I've given it 2 spray downs and luckily it only had 2 leaves at the time so I'm hoping it remains pest free, but I'm keeping all my plants I brought inside in isolation for a month to be extra sure with the low rider and a schefflera, I'm begging for mealybugs or spider mites lol. Just did one last online plant splurge before it's too cold for transport and knocked out 4 of my wishlist plants, norfolk island pine, schefflera alpine, variegated fatsia japonica and a tiki dumb cane. Also got 2 pots of NJoy pothos to add to that collection. Plants are the best addiction to have! Love your videos, been going through the whole list, been wanting to get some plumeria cuttings and now I feel more confident.
If your plant is nice and full with lots of babies you can just cut back the tall trunks and replant those. :) It will take away the stress of a full hack like I did :)
I don't know if my Polly is some kind of weirdo, but mine does NOT like water. If I water it more than once a week, it goes through guttation and drips water all over (puddles of water) and immediately starts to drop leaves (they turn yellow and brown). I cut back drastically on water, letting it go completely bone dry, and it's doing much better. It grew a huge and gorgeous new leaf about a month ago, and just a week or so ago a new growth started coming out with a white end on it. This soon developed into a bud/spadix which is still emerging. I was really not expecting a bloom. All to say "evenly moist": definitely not mine. It likes it dry-dry-dry. I also do not have high humidity. About 30% in the winter, but now with the summer it's closer to 50%.
Great video with lots of info!!! I like to see hands-on videos Question: My grandson and his bed pillow had a 'fight' with my Alocasia Polly!!! Long story!! I tried to stake the leaves that were bent. Finally had to cut them off. There is sap in some of the cut off points. I thought that 3 of the smaller leaves were ok but I'm down to 1 leaf that is staying green. What should I do? Thanks!!!
Hi, thanks for your video. I have a alocasia polly and when I bought it there was one leaf opening and then it sent out a second leaf, the problem is the two leaves never opened fully at the tip area, it is still dent inward. I don't know what going on, what do you think? Thank you
thanks for this video, do you have an update? my Poly had 5 leaves and a flower (growing indoors) then the leaves started dying 1 by 1 until only one remained, i was looking for a solution and stumbled on your video! idk, but I'm going to repot it and probably place it in some water and hope for the best, the leaves were so beautiful and huge, had it for a year, no idea why it stopped growing.
after removing it from the soil, it seems that the root system was compromised... there wasnt much connection from the "trunk" to the roots i found in the soil, maybe root-rot?
These alocasia in particular are such divas.... it wouldn't surprise me that there was some root rot... be careful with trying to let it root in water and then moving it back to soil... the water roots tend to die off when you move them back to soil and they have to start fresh again... if you want to try semi hydro, that might be an option using Leca ... otherwise i'd go with a really free draining aroid soil mix... something that dries quickly so you can water it often. in the recovery process keep your plant warm and humid... for the record...lol... this alocasia is the only one that gives me so much frustration...lol... but i guess that's why the leaves are so stunning... it keeps us trying to make it happy... the one that has a somewhat similar leaf that for me is a better grower is the frydek... it has a velvety leaf rather than the shiny plastic like leaves of the polly ... Good luck on your adventures with Polly :)
@@PlantzNThings hey thanks so much for the reply, i actually took it out the soil, the root has rot in 3 areas, i have it out in a cool dry place for about 5 days now, the last leaf is still there and it seems to have slowed down its "dying". i want to cut off the rotting parts and leave only the healthy root, but its so close to the top of the root. i'll cut it, use cinnamon powder ,and put it in arid soil following your advice. i'm just hesitant, your response gave me the courage, thanks!
