I went with the whole "I won't forget" method of labeling my little corms. Needless to say, I have no clue which is which 🤣 I checked last night though and one group is rooting and the other group is getting a green spot on the top of its head... So in ten billion years I'll know whose who! I'm happy I didn't put them all in the same container 🤣

My Alocasia is about the size as yours, and I finally repotted it from 4in to decorative 6 inch and the plant gave me 21 corms, 17 when I bought it and 5 more 3months later! I couldn’t believe how many she gave me, and so far I only lost 3 to rott, and the rest finally gave me roots and sprouting the 3 at top, but perlite and even moss and then mixed it together gave me nothing. So I made a box up with soil and like overnight I had roots on 11 of them, the rest I decided to move to fluval before I give up on them. Oh I did try one that wasn’t doing anything in water, like an avocado with totthpicks, and finally got some roots and put that in soil asap!

Hi Jeff, really great video. I, too, propagate my Alocasia's in perlite. I currently have five, little silver dragons, in perlite, under a bell jar dome. I harvested them last summer when the mother plant lost her will to live. I don't know why, but in about 2 days time, all her leaves turned completely yellow. I suspected root rot but didn't find it. I wish I would have rehabed her in perlite, but I didn't, and she didn't make it. At least I have the corms and they are doing great. I highly recommend perlite for props and for growing, and not just for Alocasia. I use it successfully for many different plants, including succulents, believe it or not.
Hey Tina. Alocasia plants can also go dormant and may not be dying.
@@EverythingPlants, yes, thank you, you are right, but this occurred in July, well out of typical dormancy (in northern hemisphere), and something else was going on...still not sure, and haven't seen it again in any of my other Alocasia.

@@arlenegardner8658 for one of my alocasia...YES! I have a silver dragon that got root rot shortly after bringing it home and I stuck it in perlite. It did so well that I just kept it in there...now for over 2 years.
This makes me want to inspect all my alocasia today! I've had mixed results with corms, think I "over loved" them, so need to relax and leave them to do their thing 😅

@Everything plants I found 2 Regal shields & a dwarf Cavendish at my local 99 cents only store 😂 I couldn’t believe it. As soon as my Alocasias are out of quarantine, I plan on repotting & searching for corms.

What are you potting them in?
I have them in my grow box in sphagnum moss. I think there’s a couple of Polly’s and a black velvet. I started my big elephant ears - they are at my husband’s school in the greenhouse. Probably about 20 of them. I’ll plant them around my pond.

I also have silver dragon, dragon scale, Jacklyn, and black velvet currently propping as corms! The Jacklyn has been taking it's sweet time I now see roots starting tho! All others are starting to get growth popping out! I propped all In soil, but one black velvet in perlite to see if it's easier or not.
I've been interested in just popping them into soil but so far I've had great success with perlite

Thank you so much for such informative video. I have repotted a few of my alocasia for the first time and found around 15 corms. PUt them in damp perlite (I mean, I ran water through the perlite before putting it in the container). What I am not sure about, and perhaps you have said it and I missed it, am I supposed to just leave it all alone now , the perlite and the corms, in the closed container? Or am I supposed to spray it with water/ keep the perlite moist? Can someone help ? :-D Thank you so much.
I'm gonna do this with my Sliver Dragon! The mother plant died but has two firm corms so it's just the perfect timing!

Lol I'm not even honestly sure... I have had one corm look like it was starting to push out new growth, so I'm assuming that when it's under the soil it will just produce a new sprout

Yes they pop up like a new plant in the same pot. It's happened on a few of mine! Black velvet, frydek, green dragon for example

I've had the ones that pop out at the top of the soil that I didn't cut off eventually rot on me. Maybe because they didn't get an nutrients from being above ground.
Hey, thank you. I have a Alocasia Polly and when I bought it one of the leaves was opening and that same leaf sent out a new shoot. The problem is that the two of then never opened all the way at the tip. Its still curled at the tip. Do you know what might be the problem? Thanks.
Question, If you leave the quarms in the soil will they still root and grow on there own?
I love perlite too, but it seems to get algae a lot. Next time you discuss perlite, could you also mention how you deal with it? I'm imaging you wash it w/ boiling water like others do. Yours is always so clean.
So far I haven't really had much algae, but I'm not worried about it as it is virtually no harm to the plant ..at least not that I'm aware of.
You can add and mix 2 Tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide in one quart of water and you can soak the plant roots or water the wants in this solution and it cleans and feeds your plants roots very nicely

You could Half peel a corn and then see if more roots come out one side compared to the other side
Hello! Have a few black velvet corms I’ve been trying to water propagate. Moved to perlite today and rinsed the perlite. How often should I water? Should I take all the perlite out and rinse or can I just add water to my tupperware? Someone please help! lol
Hi Jeff! I would like to hear more about your method of growing your Alocasia in perlite long term. Do you treat the perlite like soil? If so do you find you have to water more or less often? Or do you treat it like semi hydro and leave a small reserve of water for the perlite to wick up? I grow all of mine in a chunky aroid mix, but still experience rot, my plant room stays cool during the winter months so I think this is why and I am considering moving them to perlite as it is much cheaper than pon. I would greatly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

I like to sift and remove the fines from the perlite. The larger the pots, the larger the particles. ( increase air to the root zone)
I did drain out the perlite dust outside lol leave the big chunkies in there lol

Hey Joey, they don't necessarily need direct sunlight, they just need a bright sunny area. I find they do exceptionally well under grow lights as they get consistent light. I have mine on timers so that helps out tremendously. Alocasia plants do you go dormant from time to time so it may look like it's actually dying when? In fact it's just going dormant. Even something like missing a few waterings will make the plant. Think it needs to go dormant so consistency with watering and light are the most important things for this plant

Yes! Well-timed as usual, Jeff. I was busy re-potting yesterday and found a few corms in my silver dragon's pot and one in my struggling cuprea's. I wasn't sure if I did the right thing with placement, but you confirmed it this morning. I used stratum, but I might switch to perlite. I don't know. Lol. Thanks for this video. I want to check my black velvet. Oh, that elephant ear looks like a cucullatta. I have one and love it!
Stratum is a great way to grow corms you don’t need to switch to perlite

What’s the success rate of the smaller lil corms? And I see others peel the skin off the bulbs, is it helpful? Edit: nvm! I asked too soon! Lol
That big elephant ear looks like my giant taro, why do they call all alocasias Elephant Ear? At least in my plant app it does as every common name.
Do you ensure your pearlite pots have drainage too? Or do you treat it more like a semi hydro leca setup?
Do you spray the prop box once in awhile?
when do you repot into soil from perlite? I love growing them in this medium but always hear that alocasia need substrate with nutrients and can't survive in water-based media, but yours seem to be doing great!
I have a couple alocasia that live in perlite and I treat it the same as if it was soil. I water when the perlite is dry and I fertilize when it needs it.
I grew my stingray corms in Leca and put them in the mothers pot after they got a leaf and their starting to wilt what do I do

I have seven corms that I got from Alocasia Polly, which had root rot. I put them in moist sphagnum moss in a tiny nursery pot, but I didn't cover it like you did in that container. Do I need to cover it? if yes, could you explain why please?
For new growth point when can you separate them from the mother plant?

They can really go dormant at any time because if they don't get a certain requirement then that can send it into dormancy. As long as they're getting enough light and consistent watering regardless of the time of year, they should be okay. Mine have gone dormant if I've let it gets too dry for too long despite giving them consistent light even under grow lights. Just correct the issue and it really shouldn't go dormant. Hopefully that answers your question
I had to unpot my recently aquired Polly today bc she was NOT drying out AT ALL or growing. So I did that and there was nothing but black dirt in the pot, like not even a slow release fertilizer. It was soaked and I haven't watered it since I got it several weeks ago. Anyway, it tossed like 20 corms at me while I was removing the evil soil and all the rotted roots. She is now replanted in a 6 inch pot instead of a 6 inch pot and she has a ton of perlite tossed in for extra air... I didn't have much time so I put as many around the plant in the 4 inch pot as I could and then the others in perlite and gave them a mist... I am going to be sad if none sprout AND Polly dies :O If it was March I would be more confident bc I would still have heat on, but it's between 18 and 19 in here right now though the humidity is a steady 60 percent on its own... For the ones I couldn't tell which end was which I just laid that a bit on its side...

Alocasia are my favorite aroid. I’ve started a collection, I currently have 21 kinds, 22 alocasias ( two dragon scales that I’m going to pot together) and around 20 corms growing 😅 I love harvesting corms and growing them.
QUESTION: how often should one harvest corms? As in how many months/years does it take new forms to develop?
The only time I've ever harvested the corms or when it needs to be a repotted so I physically take it out of the pot or if I see them poking through the top of the soil. You can definitely pull your plant out of the pot at any time and if you don't see any along the edges then just put it back in the pot.
You can force the little bulbils (not corms because no basal plate or tunic) to all grow quickly right now by using a heat mat. Not many plants like the heat as much Alocasia. If you have any way to get more winter night heat to your bigger plants, then you can grow in soil easier without the problems you may have had which led you to use perlite. Your big ones are really losing a lot of potential in those coarse mixes. Your leaf size is too small for the age of the plant. More heat & light & dirt! :)

Guess it all depends on how much you open the box but I kind of leave mine alone for the most part. Checking on it only maybe once a week... I probably add a little bit of mist to the top, maybe once a month or once every 2 months
i was about to pot a few alocasia polly/amazonica corms and some Alocasia Fydek corms in perlite, and was wondering- is it possible or recommended dipping the bottom of the corms in rooting hormone using the instructions you showed? would like to hear if someone had an experience with adding growth hormones in this process and how it went (:
I've never done it....you could definitely try but I don't really see the need

I use maybe a 60% orchid bark and 40% tropical potting soil (promix or fox farm)

Awesome video...I have an Alocasia California and it's constantly putting out new growth, but the plant is wild ..is that normal? I get new leaves some are tiny and some are coming in larger but the plant tends to have one yellow after I get a new one...any ideas? Is it a way I can show you my plant so you can have a visual? Thanks for the great video! I thought to try to propagate the corms in water (don't know why) and its been a month or two and they have not grown any roots. I peeled back the top half of it; did I destroy them by doing that you think? Not sure if they are failed or not. Still firm!

The other day I added a bunch (like 6 or 7) corms into a pot. You can always separate them later if it gets crowded

I've never tried with anthurium but you could definitely try. They like good root air flow too

They should have their own little roots...so you can definitely divide them and take them out

No.... Maybe like once in a few months. As long as you don't open it constantly then it will be fine

I will soak the perlite so that it is thoroughly saturated but making sure there's no standing water at the bottom of the prop box.
Have you grown any alocasias in semi-hydro? I just got an alocasia bisma and put it in lecca and it completely melted from the center out. Just wondering if that is a good way to grow alocasias.
No...I haven't. Only a really chunky aroid mix and perlite. Judging by the description, it sure doesn't sound like it's a good way
Very interesting! I know very little about Alocasias. I had one years ago that would grow a new leaf, lose a leaf, grow one, lose one. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t get it to keep the new leaves. So I chucked it! Currently I have one, I think it’s a dragon(???) and she’s doing fine by the humidifier. Thanks for this thorough explanation and demonstration.
Can you tell me what specific perlite you’re using? For the life of me, I can’t find any with larger bits. Mine is very tiny and dusty, vs chunky. Thank you!
On the subject of perlite size, most of the “big box stores” only sell the fine one. Depending on which country you’re in, you may need to find an on line nursery/supplier that sells either “super or jumbo size” perlite. It’s so much nicer to work with. Good luck.

Yes! The perlite needs to be wet, but no standing water in the bottom
Do you need to rehydrate the perlite at some point after planting the corms and if so, do you use a spray bottle?
Yes. I always make sure it doesn't dry out. I use my garden sprayer to water the perlite, but make sure there is no standing water at the bottom

Yes I keep it closed the majority of the time.....I only open it for brief periods just to check on the cuttings
One way is to scrape the brown outer covering off leaving only the white corn They grow much faster.
I'll have to try this sometime but I've never really had any issues with leaving on that barky exterior

If you don't take the corms out of the soil will they eventually grow out of the soil? I replanted my Dragon Sheild and left numerous corms in there not knowing I should have taken them out. Will they ever sprout leaves from under the soil or should I try and take them out. This plant is doing so darn well for me right now I fear disturbing it to take them out now. Will they rot if I don't take them out?
You don’t have to take them out, they will eventually come out of the soil and you get another little plant :)

How often do you water?? Do you wait for them to dry out completely, halfway, 1/4? Everyone says something different and I have a few so don’t want to over or under do it. Been letting them dry out between half and fully

I was at the grocery store and they had a big what they called a pink princess alocasia had really pink stems and it had a ton of corms on the top of the soil so I took some of the corms and didn’t buy the plant 😂😂😂
Was the regal shield your wishlist plant awhile back? It sounds familiar but the one I got is a freakin giant, a scary, horrifying giant, that I one day hope to sleep under :P If so, the prices are really coming down or I got really lucky... They did argue with me that its a "royal shield" not a "regal shield" but I was adamant that a "royal shield" doesn't exist except in their heads... sooo maybe that's why it was a good price... 0.o
The regal shield was definitely a plant I wanted but I wouldn't consider it a wish list plant. I know these are fairly common alocasia and can be found at most big box stores. And they can get pretty large

How do you prevent bacteria and mold in the perlite?
I've never had issues with either TBH. I have had cuttings rot, but never really any other issues
