Hi friends - A reminder that BLACK LIVES MATTER! It’s important to remember and consider BLM in all aspects of your life, including your plant hobby! I’ve created a doc that specifically considers ways to support BLM in the plant community. This is created by me, a white woman, mostly for non Black people (but all are welcome to peruse). This is an ever-changing doc and I welcome all questions/concerns/recommendations in my IG dms (@goodandplanti). The doc: bit.ly/2CrEzoA
Brava for taking this position in a public way and sharing your documents and lists to help correct systemic racism. This is brave, ethical and Right! As for differences between Amazonica and Poly (one L because the namers thought it was a polyploid), they are pretty significant. For one thing, you'll never find an Amazonica in the US. It was discontinued by the TC company, Agristarts, about 20 years ago when Denis Rotolante's discovery of Poly made it obsolete. Amazonica is much more difficult to cultivate; it holds far fewer leaves, it's leaves are smooth, while Poly's are consistently gnarly. Poly stood out because it holds many more leaves than Amazonica, making it a more appealingly dense foliage plant. Poly is much smaller than the mature potential of Amazonica -- in some cases, about half the size. I wish they'd let us post photos here, but you can messge me on fb if you want more details or other information on the large and ever-growing family of cultivars that have developed from the TC production of Amazonica.
@@jjbentley9 that’s what I’m trying to figure out I’m African American, I’m just doing plant research. I’m black & dont gaf about BLM it’s a darn scam 🤷🏽♀️
After having a Silver Dragon Scale for about 10 months, I realized alocasia thrives in my household and that I am able to make them happy! So yesterday, I bought myself an Alocasia Polly. Thanks for the care information!
I love the fact that you actually said what number you let it dry out to on the moisture reader. That definitely helps a new plant mom like me! Thank you!
Gotta add my personal experiece here: you can avoid the winter dormancy entirely if you keep temperature/humidity at relatively tropical levels, and move it to a window with more light (but be sure to move it back in the summer, as you stated it burns the leaves)
Dormancy is not normal for these in the wild. It's just an emergency crash measure to deal with cool temps. There is no benefit or reason to let them go dormant, but if you can't keep them up around almost 70F (minimum at night), then they will very slowly start going towards dormant. It can take many months, and some people don't see them dormant except in Spring, when they finally succumb the culmination of the long winter fighting low temps. They prefer it very hot. 90's F are wonderful for these if you can keep them watered, but they do ok in the 70's as well. You can wake them up from dormancy almost instantly (2-3 weeks) with a heat mat (careful to not let them dry out too much). They will also grow faster with several hours a day of direct sunlight, if it's not at midday. Rinsing the leaves at every other watering eliminates spider mites. Higher humidity is not needed at all. PS: I"ve been growing Alocasia for over 30 years :)
I just got one of these, it was on clearance, and I think I made a mistake lol I live in Montana. Always up for a challenge with a plant tho. Thanks for the information!

Thank you for all the tips, I know they will come in handy!!

So the fact that leaves go light green is normal? And I wanted to change the soil (leave in same size pot) because I saw a net around the stems can i still do this in the winter time?
I absolutely murdered mine😅 I think I watered it way too much. I’m so sad about it.. I’ve been struggling so much with my plant care, slaging so much..
I believe this is from the soil moisture, gnats love that environment, there’s lots of tips online of how to get rid of them, but I can’t remember the specific ones !
I have bought an Amajonica plant that has only one leaf and another new one is coming soon. Now I have noticed that the tips of the leaf there is a sap hanging. What is that why it is there or is it normal? Please advise me. Thanks
It’s poisonous mainly for consumption unless you have sensitive skin then there might be slight irritation. But it’s more so poisonous for small animals especially household pets
What are the brown tiny lines on your leaves? I have that to on my large Polly , it’s an insect? I have it a two different genus also . Can someone tell me?
My alocasia, polly included LOVE pon and semihydro. I hardly ever lose a leaf. My big momma has leaves well over the size of my head! I haven't had it in the winter yet, so we'll see what happens.
hi if anyone can answer this for me, I accidentally left mine in the sun, the leaves look a little droopy and aren’t waxy anymore, is it going to return? or will they look like this forever :(
Glad I came across your video, I recently repotted my alocasia Polly (2 weeks ago) and split my plants into 3 pots and recently I saw leaves (1 in each pot) turned yellow….OMG what do I do??? Help please
I’ve a stem with three leaves but the biggest leaf is turning yellow, brown and it’s soft. Don’t drooping. Got it from the store and it had major root rot but it was very green and strong. Renpotted and kept him moist because someone said to do that… Now the biggest leaf is turning yellow brown while the baby leaves just seem to grow fine no colour issue or anything Not sure if too much sun…or needs less wet soil or….new pot…idk
i’m really love this plant, but i have somehow convinced myself that i’ll kill it😭. i haven’t killed any of my harder plants like my calathea😳, so maybe after this vid i’ll look around for one.
Hi, I Just Repotted My Alocasia Polly. Now My Leaves Are Turning Brown/Yellowish 😭😭 How Do I Revive It ?? I Live In Alaska & The Humid Is Already Cold Since Its The Beginning Of Fall Season
Great video. I almost bought the Polly today at a local nursery for a decent price. I may go tomorrow and pick it up. It is such a beautiful plant. I just hear alocasia plants are prone to pests. Have you dealt with pest on them yet?🤞🏽🥺😬🥶
thank you! yes, they are SUCH gorgeous plants. i sadly have to agree that they are pest magnets - specifically for spider mites. i am dealing with spider mites on the larger alocasia polly. just something to keep in mind!
@@GoodandPlanty Oh no, sorry to hear. You seem to be doing an awesome job in caring for them because they look healthy and beautiful despite. Would love to see a video on how you take care of pest infestation and also preventative measures you use. Good luck. Love your videos!😊🪴

I believe this is from the soil moisture, gnats love that environment, there’s lots of tips online of how to get rid of them, but I can’t remember the specific ones !
Never been this early 😂 love these! Keep it up
rise and shine 🌞 thank you so much!
I have bought an Amajonica plant that has only one leaf and another new one is coming soon. Now I have noticed that the tips of the leaf there is a sap hanging. What is that why it is there or is it normal? Please advise me. Thanks
I just got one ☝🏾 from Walmart. $1.98.
Is this plant poisonous? I read online that this plant is highly poisonous so I wanted to know what your take is on that. Thank you ☺️
It’s poisonous mainly for consumption unless you have sensitive skin then there might be slight irritation. But it’s more so poisonous for small animals especially household pets
What are the brown tiny lines on your leaves? I have that to on my large Polly , it’s an insect? I have it a two different genus also . Can someone tell me?
Thanks lovey video learnt alot
My alocasia, polly included LOVE pon and semihydro. I hardly ever lose a leaf. My big momma has leaves well over the size of my head! I haven't had it in the winter yet, so we'll see what happens.
hi if anyone can answer this for me, I accidentally left mine in the sun, the leaves look a little droopy and aren’t waxy anymore, is it going to return? or will they look like this forever :(
Can I mist mine if I don’t have a humidifier?
Glad I came across your video, I recently repotted my alocasia Polly (2 weeks ago) and split my plants into 3 pots and recently I saw leaves (1 in each pot) turned yellow….OMG what do I do??? Help please
Mine is down to the bulb and a few roots. The bulb is nice and firm. Show I still keep it in the soil ?
You can!
I’ve a stem with three leaves but the biggest leaf is turning yellow, brown and it’s soft.
Don’t drooping.
Got it from the store and it had major root rot but it was very green and strong.
Renpotted and kept him moist because someone said to do that…
Now the biggest leaf is turning yellow brown while the baby leaves just seem to grow fine no colour issue or anything
Not sure if too much sun…or needs less wet soil or….new pot…idk
i’m really love this plant, but i have somehow convinced myself that i’ll kill it😭. i haven’t killed any of my harder plants like my calathea😳, so maybe after this vid i’ll look around for one.
if you can handle the queen of all queens then you can absolutely keep an alocasia alive! they have similar care so i think you would have some luck 😌

Hi, I Just Repotted My Alocasia Polly. Now My Leaves Are Turning Brown/Yellowish 😭😭 How Do I Revive It ?? I Live In Alaska & The Humid Is Already Cold Since Its The Beginning Of Fall Season
hi vanessa! it sounds like your plant is going dormant for the fall/winter. nothing to worry about!
I go to wipe my leaves and keep accidentally breaking the stems... I'm so sad idk what I'm doing 😭
Now I know why my alocasia died. Thought she was thirsty this winter. Whoopsies
very common mistake!! at least now you know :)
Is that the same as angel wing plant think what it's called seems like there was a alocasia with a nick name like that
Great video.
If a leaf has burn spots should I cut the leaf off at the base?
Yes
thanks for all this information! I think I overwatered... 😬 Because my alocasia polly has one leaf with soft spots that are a yellow/brown/green (it looks kinda weird)
oop 😬 sounds like it could be overwatering. if it is - don't worry - we've all been there! lol
Does your camera zoom in purposefully?
Lovely video ❤️
The leaves keep dropping and turning a different color. Not sure what has happened to it
How to save them in winter ??
My Alocasia has purple underneath the leaves , can anyone tell me if that’s a polly?
Thank you
Can alocassia polly be grown in water?
Where you get your plants from?
i got the larger one from whole foods and the smaller one from a plant shop in nyc!
Do you have any updates on your prop? I propagated my bulbs the same way, hope they turn out!! 😬🤞🏽
bulbs totally didn’t go anywhere! lol maybe i’ll try again one day. focusing on my caladium bulbs right now
Beautiful plant🌿🌱☘️
