I just have to say I really appreciate how much you give credit to and share channels that helped you or had valuable information, Fern. I have found that the plant tube community does seem to help each other out by giving credit and mentioning one another on their channels, but I still think you’re a stand out. 😊 I’m sure these kinds of videos are a lot of work - shooting over many months to document progress, but they are one of my favorites to watch. It’s so satisfying to see the roots grow, leaves pop up and the ups and downs. So good. 💚
I’ve propagated alocasia like this for years, so I’m always surprised to see people question if it’s possible. If you cover the stem with substrate it will grow roots and it has growth points and nodes, so it’s absolutely possible 🙂
Hi Fern, I really love this timeline video. A journey from struggle to success. The result a beautiful, healthy looking Alocasia!!!! I have learnt a lot and feel confident I could do this with my Alocasias. Thank you!!!! 💚💚💚💚
I stem propagated my alocasia around six months ago, didn’t air layer just chopped it up and plopped it in some soil without leaves. When I say the leaves on the stem cuttings made me fall in love all over again with this pant, it really did. Each stem cutting produced two growth points.
Helping everyone on a budget still have a jungle 💚 some plants are just so good you need 20 or them, & I love seeing all the different ways to propigate and multiply! My dragon scale & black velvet will hopefully love this method, I can't justify buying any more 😂
Hi Fern, thank you for your video ❤I saw at leafydiva that Alocasia can turn their leaves down when they have too much light. I had one cupera done that. I put her in a not so bright place and her leaves stand up and look normal again ❤
In the past month, I’ve gotten so many Alocasia varieties… and I’ve been wondering how I could potentially propagate them! This is perfect timing ❤ I bought a couple of larger variegated Frydeks and a small one, and then a bunch of small starter plants in plugs. I’m having issues with a couple of the tiny ones but most are doing well so far! I can’t wait until I have corms to harvest from my larger ones 💚🤍💚 I love your Alocasias ❤ There’s also a few other people I watch that have gotten me more into them recently, but I initially loved yours and added some to my list :) I’m just glad I have beneficial mites being shipped on Wednesday, because I have a thrip issue I’m trying to get ahead of, and I’m worried about spider mites with all of the alocasias that I now have 😅
Yay for getting into Alocasia - I love them so much! I find they can be difficult when they're starter plants, but they get tougher as they mature. Beneficials helped my thrips so much, so I hope they help you too!! Thank you for watching
Loved this video. Such fast roots and beautiful new leaves. The new and old plants look amazing! I have been afraid to try Alocasias because I heard they were very difficult to grow. I'm getting back into my houseplants after several years. There is a lot of great info online. I appreciate it whenever you share sources for good info. I am learning so much from all your videos. I have never grown an Alocasia, but I was wondering if when the leaves drooped when you repotted it, would it have helped any to support the leaves back in an upright position for awhile? I am wondering if the repotting just shocked and weakened it and it didn't have the strength to stand all the way up again. Maybe propping them up would have helped them get stronger and after a few weeks you could try taking the support off. Have you or anyone reading this tried that? I also wonder about when to take off the old growth - keep it to give the plant energy from it's leaves or chop them and grow new ones with the energy the plant has. Someone said they grew plants from pieces of stems with no leaves on their alocasia. I loved seeing the progress over time in this video. I would love for you to do an over all general Alocasia care video. I love them, but I cannot afford to buy plants that I may have no hope of growing and I thought that was Alocasias. Now I am thinking I am wrong and I might try one. I'd love to know a good inexpensive one to try. Can't wait for your next video! Thank you so much for all your hard work on this. ♥
I'm so happy you showed intermittent progress, with the setbacks (of leaf loss) because I've found that every little change with Frydreks results in new growth accompanied with leaf loss, and in my case, total leaf loss! Gives me hope that mine will end up as full as yours. Thanks for doing the work!
Randomly sharing this as your plant ways made me remember something. Years ago we had moved into our place we had bought from an old man (91yrs old). He and his wife had raised their two children here, having bought the house new sometime in the late 1940s. Anyway, I had been mowing and pulling weeds when i happened upon a lock of silver and gray strands of hair tied to the old wire trellis that ran the length of the disused garden plot out behind our garage. It was apparently his wife’s hair tied to the wire. I recalled from the man’s realtor that his wife had grown ill and died some years back and loved her garden. I am assuming he tied her hair there. I knelt down and just stared at it till I realized I was staring at the vegetation behind her hair. And that is where it has been for over a decade now, and so shall it stay till we leave or die.
I love the idea of air layering alocasia vs me cutting the chonk into slices having them all rot on me! It’s just not as effective as many make it out to be but the spag propagation seems way more logical to me! Love this video Fern! 🫶🏼☺️🪴
Hi Fern, this Alocasia treatment has been very similar to what I did when my Polly came down with spider mites, except that I used the opportunity to transfer the mother plant into leca and found 7 corms which I grew on to eventually join the mother in leca. So now I’m getting a lot of new growth on all the corms as well as the mother plant. It’s looking fabulous. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us and keep us updated on the progress.
Thank you so much for including the updates!!! I have a strong love for alocasias which is new to me.. I’ve been strong with the pothos because they are “easy” but my alocasias THRIVE!!! I’ve been finding so many corms.. a total of 38 😮 I’ve had it for a year
i love these long videos, bc we never know what can happen, the other video about the rare plants went so different, same 6 months and completely different results
This is amazing, thank you. I hate when the stem gets tall too, so will do the same as u. Suggestion, air dry those fresh cuts before planting to avoid rot.
I had such a beautiful Alocasia Frydek once, and also a very big Cuprea, but all of a sudden they also were not happy at all & just lost their leaves and eventually died :( I also just my alocasia dragon scale & silver dragon... they started getting really weird yellowey patches and until today I have no idea what that was. Maybe you could do a alocasia plant care guide video one day. only my black velvet is still going strong😅🌱💗
haha this is so good! I was watching the start like: yes it's possible! I've made a video! then you literally show and mention that video 🤭😅 Thank you for the shoutout and I'm so excited to see how it goes for you! (haven't finished watching yet) ❤
awesome video fern!! mine is in the one leaf club constantly, took a corm and restarted, and.... one leaf club again. I seem to have the same problem you had with your black velvet back a while ago..
Great experiment Fern. I also chopped My Variegated Frydek because I was getting less and less variegated leaves. It had also root rot from being in a glass vessel with no air holes. To anyone using Lecha and Alocasia in glass or plastic pots without air holes the plant is doomed or You have to constantly change the water. So I have stems with no roots but hundreds of growth points which if kept moist will eventually grow roots and start anew. My leaves in Nov. we’re ca. 40-45cm long!! I’ve also found that if given “enough” water, light and nourishment, they don’t go into dormancy. I suppose You can only tell how much enough is is if the plant lives, flourishes, or doesn’t go dormant, the leaves fall off, or the plant dies. I’ve also noticed that by staking the stems when young and extending the stake each growth spurt also helps to strengthen the stems and they stand up. But the main factor is good lighting. Not so the leaves burn but you’ll see when removing the stakes I the plant is happy because the stems will stand like a 1. Your plants look incredible. Keep US informed on the progress. I hope I get more variegation after this experience since I already have a green Frydek but they do grow very quickly.
OMG this is exactly i was looking for! 😊😊😊😊 I'm going to try this with the huge a*s one i have (the stem is huge is kind of pointless and heavy), so i don't have to risk and chop it and then pray for roots to develop 😅
I got two big plant books free from a clinic right... its so weird when I open it and see all the plants I get such a sense of happiness and joy. I must be a high isle druid
It's November 6, 2023, and the time frame says this video was from a month ago, but your saying April and May dates so? Oh, I see now... But anyways, I appreciate this video very much. I have two small Alocasias and they never have more than two leaves 😢 Alocasias are great. I've been learning so much about them...such as they have corms, and how to prop them, and now this too. I learn so much from you❤ I'm new to your channel and I often times binge your videos. I love all your planty videos and how you share all your plant knowledge with us. It's so cool how you experiment with your plants. Thanks for the video Fern :)
Awe thank you! I appreciate you watching :)
This was awesome to watch! You did such a great job documenting the progress and also referencing other channels with honesty. Much appreciated!!
Thank you so much 😊 really glad you enjoyed! 🌿
I ended up with 4 Alocasias in my new plant collection & Ive never grown them b4, so these videos are very helpful. Thanks!
Hope you're having an amazing day fern💯💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Lovely plants 🪴

You are so patient & gentle with your plant babies. Love the time you spent putting this together. Learned a lot Fern! Thank you.
Awe thank you so much! Really glad it was helpful :)
This was a great video! I’m going to try doing this to my woody stemmed alocasia. Love the long format focused on one plant over a span of time 😊
Oh my gosh Fern I wasn't expecting the roots to grow so fast how awesome 👏 😊❤ love ya Fern
Love these long term videos you do;
Great outcome!

This was totally like a science project! Love it and love your long term commitment!

yess! after my initial project from that video ive also started doing it without airlayering and it is so easy! they're amazing
I literally had no idea you could do this with alocasia. I'll absolutely be trying this on my frydek and nobilis in the future. Thanks for the info!
I clicked so fast!!😍 this will be such an interesting video!!
Thank you so much 😊 I hope that you enjoy!

Love the mug

glad it worked out so far
lots of information in this video..great job
That is awesome! I wonder if it will work with Agloenema? They too have those woody bare stems!! Yours looks so full and lush! 👌🏻🪴💚
Never even thought to do this how cool
Wow. Wonderful experiment. I have some alocasia that I need to try cutting and regrowing. Enjoyed the video.
Loved watching this experiment! And love that beautiful sunflower mug you were drinking from!
I love watching your videos thanks!

Sooooooooooo strange question. On the April 23 update. What lipstick brand & color do you have on? 🤭 Love it!

Great project, congrats!
It’s natural for them to droop..just put it in a planter on the wall and it’s stunning!

Hi great video. Question: with Hoyas and other plants Alocasia , due you use the same type of chucky mixture for soil?
Think above it how full it could be if your combine back with mother plant - in a much bigger pot of course!😊
Found a Thrip in my house :,(
Gonna rewatch your video for them.
I love your show
Thank you for watching :)

Would it work with a dieffenbachia? ❤
Can you use rootone or perlite to get roots on the leaves you cut off?
No, leaves won’t root on their own.

What do u think about growing alocasia in 40-50% humidity? Is it even worth a try? I do have a humidifier but sometimes the humidity drops to 40%.
❤❤❤
💜
Mine was doing this until I put a grow light directly above it
That's how I've troubleshot it in the past, but unfortunately this one wouldn't perk up even with a soltech above it. Poor guy was just too far gone!
She’s so beautiful though! I love how persistent you were/ also loved the experiment 💝
🌱💚🌱💚🌱
You can just cut them and root in water they root quick
You didn't have enough Roots When you repotted so of course the plant was sacrificing leaves because the roots weren't enough to support what was on top
🌿🌱🪴
1:00 I saw a reel by @leafydiva on this topic, basically she moved the alocasia on a spot with less light and the leaves bounced back in no time
I don't know if that was your case, but generally it can be a good tip if there aren't any other causes for the leaves' droopiness
okay but i need to know if the plants that you snipped off will actually grow corms eventually
The way she gets PTSD flashbacks to the thripocalypse every time she sees a black spot on a leaf 💀 I pray that it never comes back 🙏
I think it just needs to be staken up
I LOVE the genus of alocasia, but the constant spider mites just ruin them for me 😢
