Thank you for this! I just got an alocasia odora bulb for Christmas and the only bulb I've ever grown was an already rooted alocasia polly! Definitely trying lecca (that's what my polly is still in)
So informative! Thank you so much! I can’t wait to try it. I also heard it’s possible to harvest anthurium seedlings from a mother plant and grow them. If you have any information on that one, I would love to watch on your next video.
So glad that I could help! I'm not too sure about anthuriums, I've only just gotten one. But I've seen people collecting anthurium pollen so its possible you may need to pollinate them in order to get seeds or seedlings?? Best of luck :)
@@ThePlantUtopia just chillin still lol 😂 well at least when I checked last ... not even a week ago. I’m gonna check them again when I get back home later!
Oh my God. Thank you so much for this!!! I have been trying soil, pumice, perlite and sphagnum and it didn't work at all. I got some Leca laying around and I'm gonna try this now. Wish me luck.
I got some recently and I kinda had no idea what I was doing. A couple sprouted and then I let it dry too much then Watered which basically over watered it. So I'm trying again and thank you this I'm sure will help. Thank you thank you thank you.
This was super helpful!! Planted 5 corms and accidentally upside-down (couldn't find any info on what direction to plant them, thank you!!). All planted in cactus/succulent super well draining soil under a plastic cover and 24hr plant light. Four are rooting and three have leave stems coming up but wonky since I planted them upside-down, but turned them a bit so hopefully they won't be too odd. So excited for more plants!!
Ah very exciting! Yeah I couldn't find any info on the right orientation either.... so that's why I provided! Good luck with yours! Sounds like they're doing great!
I placed two bulbs in soil and watered them regularly, but nothing happened for months...until last week, I checked and I saw two tiny leaves poking out. I hope they continue to grow because I had completely given up on them and now I'm invested.
Amazing that you got the soil method to work! I think I may have just been a bit too impatient with it, especially as other methods worked better for me
@Vanzful Have you been continuing to have success with your bulbs? Just wondering since it’s been a few months since you posted about them! Im getting ready to try my hand at this method and some bulbs for the first time!
@@vanzful This gives me so much hope! I'm a little nervous, but it's trial and error so we shall see. Good thing is that I can always try again in the future as well and I still have my parent plant! Thanks for replying, excited for you! :)
I treat the croms like I would treat an avocado seed, pretty much the same methods work for both, I have also grow a avocado seed many times just in soil, place in soil, leave the top unburied and showing and water often, I'm guessing if you scrape off the outer shell and left the top of the croms above soil and allowing light to reach them, they would spout much faster
Thank you for this video!! I was able to successfully get all of mine to sprout. Only 1 has rooted so far. Moving the one that has rooted into some soil and perlite.
I have had an Alocasia Polly for a few months, was giving it the water, light, drainage, etc that I needed but it wasn’t doing a dang thing. Lost a few leaves. Then I saw a video the other day that mentioned theirs was being strangled by garden mesh. Little did I know, so was mine! And during this process of removing the mesh, I got 13 bulbs! One already has its own roots. Gotta figure out what to do with them now! Very informative video, thank you
This just happened to me too! I’ve had mine for almost 1.5 years and only just discovered the mesh trapping it today and a bonus 8 corms. I hope it can finally push out some new growth now!
Seeing your video I thought maybe I put mine upside down... so I went to checkit and it has growth! Yay! It took so much time! But the roots seem solid and there will be a stalk eventually 🤗 will try in lecca net time! Thanks for those tips!
I just got my first alocasia polly the other day and I repotted and got some bulbs. I put them in soil and now I'm thinking maybe tomorrow I'll dig them up and try the shallow puddle method! I'll update if it works 👍 thank you!
Ooh exciting! They may well sprout in soil, it just depends on the conditions. But I defo prefer shallow puddle or wet pon or something as they moisture really gets the bulb going! Good luck!
Amazing video!! I used your advice and have grown 5 leaves from bulbs yay! I’m wondering how you maintained the plants in leca after they sprouted? Did you keep the bulbs half submerged in water? I noticed one of my leaf tips turned mushy and hopefully I can figure out why☺️
Woah.. I came across your channel in 2023, and haven’t come back to watch a video this far back yet.. I can’t get over how different you look and sound here!! I feel like I look like a completely different person 3 years later as well, but wow!! And it’s funny because you currently have the same hair colour that you do in this video 😂💜

I just planted maharani baby corms in bottle caps with a bit of water to get them going , I can’t wait to try my stingray . I just saw the plant and it’s beautiful- black with pink variegation . I’m no quitter if this one doesn’t work out tfs ❤
Hi Emma, great video! I have some Alocasia bulbs that I have now put in a shallow puddle thanks to you sharing your methods😊I was wondering if I should put them on a heat mat?
Hi! I tried your “shallow puddle” method & it worked beautifully!! I’m wondering when you moved the bulbs into leca? Mine have some roots and are sprouting, but I’m unsure when I should be moving them! Any advice is appreciated 🥰
OMG yay!! So glad the shallow puddle method worked well for you! I moved mine to leca after it rooted but before it sprouted too much as I didn't want the sprouts to grow sideways
Given the Brazilian origins of these plants, and the tropical weather, with possibly very heavy rainy seasons, the plants may well be accustomed to growing in shallow puddles in the wild. Very interesting, and thank you in behalf of the four bulbs I found.
Actually the Alocasia amazonica(Polly) is not from any jungle, it is a hybrid “created” by a nurseryman in the 1950’s in Miami. It was given the name amazonica because that was the name of the plant nursery!
Stratum! Never had a failed corm (bulb) in barely damp stratum with a humidity dome and warming mat. I’m sure I will one day but so far it’s been easy.
My zebrina died this christmas, it was my first plant and i was sosososo sad. I just looked through the soil and omg i found 8!!!! The two main ones that died was hard too, going to see if its going to grow - thank you so much
i recently made this also! I had my alocasia bulbs on soil for a long time and nothing happened, but as soon as i made a "germinator" they started to sprout. I made it out of a disposable plastic container (like those you buy takeaway food in) with a lid, for moisture i put paper towels on the bottom and on the top, and then added water. I kept it closed most of the time and opened it to take a look of how were the babies doing. A few days later i had roots coming out and 2 or 3 weeks later i had to put them in soil because they were getting attached to the paper. Maybe this will work for you also in another opportunity!!
Bro, i tried this 3 week back, except i did it with moss and it worked cause i see a stem coming out! but now im kind of stuck. Like, when did you take out the bag? And when should i start watering?
I had tried all the methods, leca, grit, appropriate soil, and the best and most consistent has been bulbs in a very shallow puddle in some sealed tupperware on a heat mat with my other bulbs. They always grow.
Hey! This vid helped me out a bunch. I found some bulbs and I’m gonna try the shallow puddle method. A few questions: Is just enough water to keep them wet good? And the lid stays on top right? Do I ever need to take the lid off? Should I keep it on a sunny windowsill or a dark environment like a cabinet?
Ah how exciting! I did like 3-5mm of water so like 1/2 the bulb was covered and kept the lid on most of the time. Every few days I'd take the lid off for a couple of hours to let it get fresh air and I'd change the water if it was getting a bit gross. As for light, doesn't matter too much in the beginning before leaves. I kept mine in a low light part of my shelves but it wasn't like full black cabinet. good luck!
Thank you soooo much for this video. It was incredibly informative. I just put my corm in LECA. do I need to cover the top? And do I regularly top off the water to keep it at the same level it's been? Thank you!!
No problem! So glad it's helped! I wouldn't cover the top no. As for topping off the water, you can every once in a while to keep the very bottom submerged
Thank you! My alocasia got pests from a Monstera I brought in and before I noticed the spread, they already went in between the leaves and every new leaf had damage before sprouting D: I just made the big chop and cut the tops from the rhizomes, hoping they will sprout new leaves again from the part that was formerly in the soil, but like this, I might get even more plants than I had before (I have four rhizomes and found 25 bulbs of which half already have light swollen sprouting tips)
Ugh im so sorry pests are the worst! If it gives any hope, I gave my big alocasia plant the chop like how you described and it popped out new growth again eventually! Amazing you found so many bulbs! Hopefully you can get loads to sprout! 🤞
I watched your video about a month ago and dug out 10 corms from my Alocasia Polly! I put all 10 in a shallow container with lid, but also ordered leca and when it came in put 4 in leca. ALL are growing. and honestly at least 6 started right away. Now the 6 I have in shallow water (puddle is the best word for it haha) the roots are kind of looking spidery I think I need to plant it. What do you recommend? I plan to leave the 4 others in Leca for now but wondering if I should plant the others in the soil now. At least 4 of them I believe need to be moved to something more now. (P.S. I didn't even know these plants came from bulbs..... I learn so much on youtube haha!
Ah that is so exciting! I'm glad you've had so much success! You can defo transfer to soil once they've got roots. Just be sure to keep the soil fairly moist for the beginning. It would also be good to keep it in a warm humid place to encourage growth
Hi I’ve used shallow puddle method and your video helped me so much! Now my alocasia regal shield has white roots and a small leaf do I need to wait till it grows more leaves or can I transfer it already? can do a video of how to transfer it to Leca or soil please? I don’t want to kill it by doing wrong method ! And THANK YOU for this video. When I first found the bulb I put it directly in the soil and saw no results and that’s when I found your video it helped me sooo much and I’m so happy that my bulb has a small new leaf . Keep doing more videos .
that's so exciting!!! regal shield babies are some of the most beautiful imo! I'd say it's defo time to transfer to leca or soil at this point, just be sure to keep it hydrated for the first few days and you should be fine! you got this!
Sweet video I got like 30 when I re potted mine. I put them in a cherry tomato container and cove=ed all but 2 of the holes in the lid on a bed of shredded sphagnum moss and sprayed them down w a mist bottle. 1 week in and nothing yet but im hopefull this method will work well. I'm thinking its a good consistent air water mix.
@@GoodGrowing ive got tiny roots starting out of a bunch of them, I need to check them and pot up a few and see how they take to soil. Your baby ones were adorable. I can't wait! And I think the sphagnum moss may be coming back to life if thats a thing....
I think not fully burying the bulbs in soil makes a difference too. Only bury bottom half. Keep moist. Uncovered 💚 I’m gonna try your lecca method too!!
Thank you for this info 😃 I’m totally trying the shallow puddle method because I can’t seem to find any lecca?? Hopefully they’ll do okay in just some good potting soil after they (hopefully! 🤞🏻) sprout?!?? 😊 🌱🪴💚
I just bought an Alocasia from my local Cafe and when removed it from the Dirt I found 5 small bulbs and put them into my propagation jar filled with Leca.. Wish me luck :)
I found some bulbs when replanted my Polly last autumn. Put in sphagnum moss mini greenhouse (it's just some plant based plastic container with lid 😅) and they didn't sprout just until now.. maybe it's because of winter, but I hope they will continue to grow and make some roots too. :)
Thanks for the informative video. I’m giving the leca abd puddle water a go 🤞 however, can you pls tell me if you put them in the dark or just ‘normal’ indoor light environment or even use grow lights? I’m assuming just the normal indoor light
Ooh yay very exciting! I kept mine in just normal light, nothing special. I suppose they could probably do alright in the dark even until the leaves start sprouting... but I'm not too sure
Hiiii! I love this video and it was very helpful. I have a quick question: what if the found bulbs have roots already? Should I still do the leca method (chosen method) to get more roots?
Awesome! Yeah you can totally use the leca method to help it grow more roots or leave it in leca permanently as long as you're keeping track of pH and fertiliser.
Hey Emma! Thank you for this video! So I found a baby tuber today in my pot. I’m from India so the weather here isn’t too cold for the winter, do you recommend saving the bulbs for springtime or planting it as it is? And if yes, how do I store it?
If the weather is still pretty warm you could probably go ahead and try to get it to sprout! If you wanted to store it, I'd say keep it in your plant's soil. You may be able to store it in a dark dry place like caladiums but I'm not too sure so it may be worth doing some research! Good luck
I have seven corms that I got from Alocasia Polly, which had root rot. I put them in moist sphagnum moss in a tiny nursery pot, but I didn't cover it like you did in that container. Do I need to cover it? if yes, could you explain why please?
Hello ! Thank you very much for you video ! I have been experimenting on a variety of ways to make the bulbs sprout. As you seem to have the best result with le Leca method, I'm going to try that and I was wandering : Did you close the container in this method to create a greenhouse effect, like with the shallow puddle method ? Or do you keep it ventilated while slittly immerged, like cuttings in water ? I wish you good fortune for all you Alocasias :)
Thank you for your video! I'm trying to save my Alocasia Lauterbachiana so I'm definitely running out to get some LECA today. With the LECA method, do you recommend keeping it inside a mini greenhouse or is open air fine?
Thank you for this detailed video. For some reason my Alocasia Polly that had a healthy sprout ended up dying once i transferred it to LECA. I did do this in the winter, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I am trying out your "shallow puddle" method with my Pink Dragon bulbs
Thanks for sharing... really useful video👍🏻👍🏻🌸 I grew an alocasia dragon scale tuber in water..it grew a tiny leaf.. them i put it in leca and it dissolved dead...l don't know what l did wrong..i couldn't keep it in water permanently..or could l ?🙄
Thank you for the information, mine is in a small greenhouse it’s the only way that i can keep my plant Do you have a video on calathea plant, I’m having a hard time with mine.
Thanks for vid, great to hear your experiences! Any grow lights? ok so a couple things - air flow is needed, some of the others might have worked with a little fresh air such as a break from closure or a little gap to allow flow. Second the bulbs should be washed before storage to prevent bacteria problems.
While the bulbs were in the puddle, I didn't use grow lights. Just kind of put the little box in a corner of my shelves. Once I put them in leca, they were under grow lights for 5+ hours a day. Yeah that is probably true about the air flow and the washing. I just didn't do it at the time 🤷🏻♀️

I found SOOO many when I repotted mine yesterday , put them in zip lock bags with sphagnum moss. 🤞🏼
Amazing! Ooh I'll have to try that method next time as well! :) Good luck with yours!
How are the ones in moss doing?
@@ThePlantUtopia just chillin still lol 😂 well at least when I checked last ... not even a week ago. I’m gonna check them again when I get back home later!
@@stephaneejo8208 Hi, I am thinking of placing mine in moss because I don't have any LECA! Did yours work??
@@Reannarules123 It works for me, moist long fibered sphagnum moss work wonders. Exactly 30 days and they sprout.
Oh my God. Thank you so much for this!!! I have been trying soil, pumice, perlite and sphagnum and it didn't work at all. I got some Leca laying around and I'm gonna try this now. Wish me luck.
Good luck! If leca doesn't do the trick, shallow puddle works super well!
Thanks from France !! I've found bulbs and I didn't know how to do it ! I will to try Leca method !
Ooh yay very exciting :) good luck!
I got some recently and I kinda had no idea what I was doing. A couple sprouted and then I let it dry too much then Watered which basically over watered it. So I'm trying again and thank you this I'm sure will help. Thank you thank you thank you.
I love this video, I just ordered the plant today , can’t wait for it to arrive , I will definitely check the soil periodically to see if there bulbs.
Ah super exciting! No need to check too much, just when it needs a repot
@@GoodGrowing ok, Thank you For that , inFormation
@@toniarussell5266 no problem! glad to help!
Just started mine!! thanks for the tips :-)!!
Ooh very exciting! Good luck with it!
Thanks for this! Just putting my bulbs in Leca to see how they go 👏🏻
good luck!
@@neishagoodson660 Yes! I have a mini plant with about 8 leaves. I wish it was a little bigger, but it is still growing...Good luck with your bulbs!
So glad you had success! 🙌
Very informative video, thank you
Super exciting about the bulbs! I hope you have success growing them!
This just happened to me too! I’ve had mine for almost 1.5 years and only just discovered the mesh trapping it today and a bonus 8 corms. I hope it can finally push out some new growth now!
Hey thanks! I tried this and it worked.
Ahh amazing!!
Seeing your video I thought maybe I put mine upside down... so I went to checkit and it has growth! Yay! It took so much time! But the roots seem solid and there will be a stalk eventually 🤗 will try in lecca net time! Thanks for those tips!
Oooh super exciting that you've got some growth in there :) Glad I could help!
Ok thanks for your video. I found my best method
I discovered i had bulbs in my alocasia when new plants had started sprouting from the pot! it was a very pleasant surprise
Ahh amazing! Isn't that the best surprise ever!
Good luck!
Thank you so much! Your video was son helpfull!
Aww yay! Glad to be a help 😊💚
Ahh that's amazing!! once they started to grow leaves I lowered the water level so it filled like 1/3 of the container instead of 2/3
love it, thank you
Yeah I've defo changed a lot in the last few years! Hopefully for the better 🤞
@@GoodGrowing great then and now!! You definitely seem more comfortable now and I love that for you!! I just love that you happen to have that similar purple colour currently too 💜👌🏼
Thank you so much!
I just planted maharani baby corms in bottle caps with a bit of water to get them going , I can’t wait to try my stingray .
I just purchased a pink variegated black velvet alocacia corm for 10$ I hope it grows but it’s coming from another country and free shipping let’s pray 🙏🏼 this works . I just saw the plant and it’s beautiful- black with pink variegation . I’m no quitter if this one doesn’t work out tfs ❤
Hi Emma, great video! I have some Alocasia bulbs that I have now put in a shallow puddle thanks to you sharing your methods😊I was wondering if I should put them on a heat mat?
you could put them on a heat mat. Just keep an eye on the water level as the heat will make it evaporate faster
Nice video! What temperature do you keep them at? I put mine in soil this morning but switched to leca now I've seen your video :)
Given the Brazilian origins of these plants, and the tropical weather, with possibly very heavy rainy seasons, the plants may well be accustomed to growing in shallow puddles in the wild. Very interesting, and thank you in behalf of the four bulbs I found.
Alocasias are not from Brazil, they are from South East Asia. And no, they don't grow in shallow puddle but moist mulch under the canopy.
@@kaikart123 Well, my bulbs are growing very well in a shallow puddle, which is the same water content as a moist mulch. What can you do, eh?
Actually the Alocasia amazonica(Polly) is not from any jungle, it is a hybrid “created” by a nurseryman in the 1950’s in Miami. It was given the name amazonica because that was the name of the plant nursery!
😂
I followed your instructions for leca and sprouted a baby Azlanii! Thanks!
OMG yes! Super exciting!
Awesome! Corms or bulbils depending on the size, same same but different lol. I have one for my alocasia albo germinating and I'm beyond anxious! 👩🌾😃
Ooh good luck! I hope it gets growing well!
Thanks for sharing. Really enjoyed this video am trying to rescue one I brought from Lowes and it has those bulbs in it.
Ooh good luck with the bulb growth!
Ooh yes I'll have to give this a go next time! Thanks for the cool idea :)
Bro, i tried this 3 week back, except i did it with moss and it worked cause i see a stem coming out! but now im kind of stuck. Like, when did you take out the bag? And when should i start watering?
@@ed1443 i put mine in soil when roots started “grabbing” the paper towels.
I had tried all the methods, leca, grit, appropriate soil, and the best and most consistent has been bulbs in a very shallow puddle in some sealed tupperware on a heat mat with my other bulbs. They always grow.
Yes the shallow puddle method is my favourite too!
I have some forming at the base of the plant and also the edges of the pot, little alien looking things, so cute, cant wait to see what happens.
Ooh very exciting!!
Hey! This vid helped me out a bunch. I found some bulbs and I’m gonna try the shallow puddle method. A few questions:
Is just enough water to keep them wet good?
Thank you, 8 of 9 corms have roots with sprouts using the shallow puddle method 😁 now to see how they take to spag moss .
Amazing! I bet they’ll love the sphag!!
Oooo, I’m going to try this with my zebrina. I found 3 bulbs when I repotted it!
Ahh brilliant! Hope it goes well!
How are they doing? my zebrina is dying and have just found 2 bulbs!
Amazing!! It sounds like you've got a good setup for them! 🤞 they sprout soon!
Ahh good point! Maybe I'll have to try 1/2 burying the bulbs next time
Hi! I just put my bulbs in a shallow puddle. However, I’m wondering do I need to have it somewhere with light or keep it away from light?
Thank you for this info 😃
I’m totally trying the shallow puddle method because I can’t seem to find any lecca??
Hopefully they’ll do okay in just some good potting soil after they (hopefully! 🤞🏻) sprout?!?? 😊

Ah amazing! Let me know how it goes! Soil should be fine once they've sprouted!
I just bought an Alocasia from my local Cafe and when removed it from the Dirt I found 5 small bulbs and put them into my propagation jar filled with Leca.. Wish me luck :)
omg so exciting!!
Can I give this video more than one like? 😅 It's so helpful, thank you soooo much! 😁
Thanks for the tips! I have mine in soil but will transfer it to lecca. Was wondering what kind of light conditions this method needs?
Exciting! I kept mine in medium-bright indirect light :)
I found some bulbs when replanted my Polly last autumn. Put in sphagnum moss mini greenhouse (it's just some plant based plastic container with lid 😅) and they didn't sprout just until now.. maybe it's because of winter, but I hope they will continue to grow and make some roots too. :)
Ooh how exciting! Sometimes they do take a moment if they're not ready quite yet. But I'm glad you're getting sprouts and roots now!
Thank you for this video! Can I mix soil and LECA together to grow my bulbs?
Hmmm I've never heard of people mixing soil and leca together before... so I'd lean towards no...
I kept the leca one open, but I could imagine closing the system could work as well!
Thank you for your video! I'm trying to save my Alocasia Lauterbachiana so I'm definitely running out to get some LECA today. With the LECA method, do you recommend keeping it inside a mini greenhouse or is open air fine?
I kept mine just out in the air but I suppose a greenhouse would be great to keep humidity high! Good luck!
Thank you for this detailed video. For some reason my Alocasia Polly that had a healthy sprout ended up dying once i transferred it to LECA. I did do this in the winter, not sure if that had anything to do with it. I am trying out your "shallow puddle" method with my Pink Dragon bulbs
Could be because the water was a bit cold over winter. That's a common issue of stress for leca plants
@@GoodGrowing Oooooo...I did not know that. I just started using LECA so still learning about it. Thank you for the info!
Thanks for sharing... really useful video👍🏻👍🏻🌸
I grew an alocasia dragon scale tuber in water..it grew a tiny leaf.. them i put it in leca and it dissolved dead...l don't know what l did wrong..i couldn't keep it in water permanently..or could l ?🙄
Hmmm I suppose you could keep it in water permanently if you fertilised it properly and had the right sort of vessel to hold it upright?
Thank you for the information, mine is in a small greenhouse it’s the only way that i can keep my plant
Do you have a video on calathea plant, I’m having a hard time with mine.
I do have a calathea video. You can find it in my Plant Care playlist
Hi. How long did it take for the bulbs to sprout using the water method.
I tried the shallow puddle method but my corms started having this slimy white film around them!! is that okay?
Thanks for vid, great to hear your experiences! Any grow lights?
ok so a couple things - air flow is needed, some of the others might have worked with a little fresh air such as a break from closure or a little gap to allow flow. Second the bulbs should be washed before storage to prevent bacteria problems.
While the bulbs were in the puddle, I didn't use grow lights. Just kind of put the little box in a corner of my shelves. Once I put them in leca, they were under grow lights for 5+ hours a day.
Yeah that is probably true about the air flow and the washing. I just didn't do it at the time 🤷🏻♀️
@@GoodGrowing thanks for the reply! i just added grow lights, seed mat, and even tho we’re just entering winter i got one bulb to sprout - thanks to this vid!
i did wash, not properly i guess, coz one batch of mine got moldy.
