  • In this video, House One editor and DIY expert Jenn Largesse installs a low-maintenance fence around her yard to bring it up to code.

House One editor Jenn Largesse's backyard renovation project continues to progress. With the new shipping container pool installed, code requires the entire yard to be fenced in. Opting for low-maintenance, she decides on a 6-foot vinyl fence product that more than meets code requirements.
    Difficulty: ⅗
Cost: Varies based on size of yard
    Time: Several days
    Where to find it?
Jenn and Jon from Southway Fence (www.southwayfence.com/) install a Chesterfield Smooth White Vinyl Fence. The fence is manufactured by Bufftech, a CertainTeed Brand (www.certainteed.com/). Jenn demonstrates how to dig a post hole with a post hole digger. John sets the vinyl post in quick-set concrete and uses a level and string line to finalize its position. Jenn and John insert the steel-reinforced bottom rails between the posts, and then tap the vertical panel pieces into the groove with a rubber mallet-making trims to their height and width with a miter saw and table saw as needed-before capping them with the top rail. They use a drill driver to install a set screw and then secure the caps with PVC adhesive. Lastly they hang the gate hardware and gate using a drill/driver.

One thing no one ever tells you about vinyl fencing? It makes a lot of NOISE in high winds! The fence creaks and groans in the wind, especially with some age.

There are loads of pros and cons.
Almost maintenance free, sure. Pretty high initial cost. My problem was that my particular installation from one vendor was just brittle. Obviously, I'm just one homeowner with one neutral experience in a cold climate but I'll be sticking to conventional wood or composite fencing from now on. It is really hard to beat the low/no maintenance and the clean aesthetic but it just didn't work out for my particular situation/or my fence make was just not good.

The fact he used a torpedo level on a post that long is a bit discouraging. I feel a 4ft level is needed at the least.

Vinyl is about as straight and true a material out of the box or off the truck that one can use for fences. If the torpedo level says it’s plum/level to a dude that’s been doing fences for 19 years, trust it and go on about your life.

Where i live you're required to have an alarm on the gate for the fence if you have a pool. There's a black market of about 3 or 4 alarms in the entire town that are traded between anyone who is getting a permit inspection. No one keeps the alarm, they just pass it off to the next person who is getting an inspection done. I love it.

Wood fence has been up for 12 years, in FL. treated it with preservative before installation, some spots still look new. termites attacked some spots. Big installation difference between Old House video and Lacey Family Farm, must be why some plastic fences fail faster.

I've seen a dog go through a fence with solid wood, but thin, slats and almost not notice it due to the must catch ball excitement, how does this vinyl stuff hold up?

Let me just start by saying fences are a P. I.A I did my wood dog eared fence in three sections on a large property. The Pennsylvania company was the best of the best.! Quality fence material. South Jersey wood rotted in five years at ground level. Plus the wood rotted and various locations.. not with the Pennsylvania companies would which is still tight and intact… This will be my second multiple panel and post replacement within seven years. Maybe I have a soil remediation problem I don’t know.. I’m so sick of it!!!! The only thing I can do is continue on replacing post and panels every five years as they rot out either ground level where the panels themselves tend to rot, except for the Pennsylvania company. they are still brand new and panels are tight and close together rot anywhere or fencing. 12 years now. they were more expensive. They told me about the jersey installers.” fence before they started it they called it(jersey thing). I don’t wanna go with plastic fencing I see how they’re down all the time with the same issues. Somebody hits it kick the ball against it they break. My problem may be compacted soil, and it rots the post at ground level. Not the Pennsylvania companies just the jersey. now my shed, which is eight years old rotted at the bottom from water splashing up. Now I have to get that sided to preserve it.. it was bought before Covid and the price is double for what I paid. I’ll shut up now just disgusted aggravated with things that don’t last anymore. My original air conditioner lasted me 59 years. I’m on my second one after 10 years a high-end high-efficiency Lennox. Installers told me they only last 10 years.. my Bradford white water heater was in for 26 years not one issue. I bought the same one last week Bradford white defender Hydro jet for 170 more from the big stores.s I went to a plumbing supply house called Ferguson. They said you’ll definitely get 10 to 12 years out of it no more 20+ years.. I never even drained the original water heater.. my house was built in 1961 and I have a heater air conditioner work for 50+ years with minor maintenance was amazing.. just an old man complaining at 60 years old.
Good luck I hate to give up my big beautiful, beautiful corner lot property, but maybe I should just go to retirement condo . Good luck guys homeownership is an itch!!!!- the B

    • @penguins9645
