Better he be keeping himself focused on that, keep his eyes trained on that menu, so that he may never lay eyes on a later Pig-snout BMW. We all long for the days when this was "ugly," not to mention "overcomplicated" or "had too many annoying features."

17 years later and 19 (nineteen!) years after the e60's debut it looks more or less like cars produced today. That's remarkable.
it's kinda reson why people called it ugly (I was one of them). It was just very very different from what you could see on the streets back then. Futuristic but not in the sci-fi level, but in kind of industrial design level futuristic. Looking at audi and merc from 2003, these looks old as hell, when with e60 on some nice oem 18-19 inch wheels you could trick non-cars person to think it's fresh car, from outside and inside (where only infotaiment system could snitch you out lol)
And there's still more of them on the road than any other BMW ever produced. Which to me speaks of reliability and ease of repair and general affordability. Talking about regular E60s, not M5, ofc, especially the diesel models.
Too bad even the money saved on Alfa could do the same and better, because in Alfa radio works normally and you can turn the sat nav off.

@0972q8 it was great when it came out. JC was overexaggerating how difficult it was to use. The infotainment and iDrive system was fantastic and easy to use. The sat nav could be turned off. He changed the station and the volume button is on the left of the wheel. And the indicators do self-cancel!
@@64bakes This episode was filmed in early 2005 and at that time iDrive was full of bugs and inconvenient settings. Only later BMW fixed most of them during regular service updates.
@@GURken I think they changed the iDrive system from the earlier version, and this 5 would have had a later revision of it. The E65 7 series had a fantastic iDrive system (circa 2003).

The e60 m5 is a beautifully understated car. Almost every other car that will get you to 200 mph wants you to know that it can do 200 by looks alone. Not the e60 m5. No ridiculous rear spoiler or front splitter, just a few little badges and a bit of a face-lift. It is one of the greatest stock sleepers ever, just pull those badges off and none but the most keen eyed car enthusiasts would be able to spot it out from any other e60 5 series.

TheIceWarrior ... yes, and it turned out to influence all matter of automobiles, no? I think this is the first car Chris Bangle designed for BMW but I'm probably wrong. I know people here on the west coast of Canada hated the styling at first, but grew to like it (if not love it).
In 2017, this car looks like something that was designed in 2016 at the earliest. It just looks fresh. Which is not something you can cay about contemporary Audis.

@@adams7405 I have my 2007 E63 M6 nearly 10 years now it's a Jekyll and Hyde car if ever there was one , super luxurious and an out and out hot rod when the afterburners are fully lit.I also own a 2018 F80 M3 and while that is a fabulous car my all time favourite is my M6 and with only 26k miles on it , it's like new ! I agree with you 100% !

My dad has a e60, it has 2 modes.. The first one only blinks like 4 times, the other ones turn off when you start going straight again.
I drive an E60 530i. When I first got the car, I was so confused as to how to turn the indicators off.
You just slightly tap in the same direction you started to blink in, in order to turn it off.
MultiTerpen i have an e60 . It blinks 3 times.
FBI Surveillance I can confirm that. I drive an 09 M5 and yes, it's 3 times with a half flick of the indicator. It's meant to be used for lane changes

Jeremy Clarkson and co. have always despised anything to come out of Germany. They know it's usually the benchmark of automobiles, but he was digging deep in part one for flaws. Even before watching the second Top Gear/Fifth Gear/Top Gear has never given the Germans a fair shake.

The Indicator issue might be why no BMW Driver uses Indicators

The great thing about this car is I just drove a 2008 M5 for the first time in 2019, and all the computer crap STILL seems incredible. I was still surprised by the crazy suspension etc

It sounds almost like an F1 car, which is great and all but it isn't to everyone's taste. More so to people who buy a large 4 door family car like this. The fact that the car sounds and drives so unlike what you would expect this type of car to is what makes it special, but rationally this type of engine does not suit this type of car at all, it really belongs in something much smaller and lighter with probably only two seats.
Top Gear bullshiting like always... They deliberately turned the volume down when he accelerated..just after saying that the engine sounds like a diesel. And then he whines about satnav and blinkers... that was the worst top gear moment that i have seen

I loved my old man’s when he had one. Was devasted when he went from the e34 m5 to this one, but man the sound.

You could say that 3 times and it would not be enough. Everyone seems to have a cousin or a friend whose E60 M5 blew its motor thanks to the famed rod-bearing issue.
Ingaz here in russia we have a youtuber called Davidich. Back in the day he had E60 M5 called Shadow, you can google it. He changed his gearbox 6 (!!) times or so 😂 He said „who cares, gearbox and some engine parts are just like brake calipers on this car - i buy them every month”. So yeah, you can not make me bealive that E60 is a reliable car. IS-F is reliable, E60 - not even close.

I've been admiring the E60 design since it first came out. And I was so excited to get to ride in it, my dad's friends car, like 15 years ago. And up till now, I'm 25, still liking the design compared to other 5s.
The design of this car really comes into it's own as the years go on. It still looks so fresh and lithe, it makes the W211 Mercedes E Class look desperately bland and boring.

Honestly it's not ugly, But rather boring. It's almost hard to differentiate between non M and M5 for non car people except when the engine is on. There are some modifications tho which looks very cool imo.

@@lyte561 Well, yeah mine too. Its not a M car but I'm very happy with it. Its just that cars are complicated machines and can have design flaws which popup later in their lifecycle. This is one such unfortunate occurence on a, which I think, is a beautiful car. Teslas are great too in their own right, I mean no one took EVs seriously before they came along. Just that I kindof hate their pretentious fan boys who think they are better than everyone else, ha ha
To clear up some.. lies about the M5.. first off, he didn't press volume up, Volume on a BMW is a (+/-). He pressed to change preset stations. Next, the indicator DOES self-cancel after 3-blinks. There is two levels to it. Slight press for 3-blinks or full press for constant blinking, which cancels after 25* degree turn of the wheel.

@@jhssrg_lfdesrk yeahhhhh-ish. It's 400hp until you go into M-mode. IIRC, he does indeed do that later in the test (probably found in "part 2")
Now... You are correct. But the change preset is definitely on the wrong side. The volume should be on the right hand side. I've owned mine for a year now and still do this every so often

It's almost unbelievable that the E60 was introduced 20 years ago, the exterieur still looks so fresh and modern. I did hate the design when it was released though.
You know, I always wondered they would even have the time between gear changes as a setting. Why would I want a slow gear change? What advantage is there to a slow gear change? When I put my foot down to accelerate from 30-60mph/50-100kmh, I expect the car to downshift one gear and then upshift when I reach my cruising speed. When I’m going through the gears doing a pull, I can put the car into manual mode and change them by myself, again, why want it to be slow?

So many corrections to be made. As an M5 owner, this review makes ME seem stupid for owning this car which is unfair. For starters, its a beautiful car and I have never heard anyone put the words ugly and M5 in the same sentence. Second, its actually not a "shouty" car at all. Compare the hood of the E92 M3 to the M5 and you'll see what I mean. The hood is the same as one from a 528i, and the tiny decklid spoiler is barely noticeable; if anything the M5 is TOO subtle. Third, if you flick the turn signal halfway it will cancel itself after 3 blinks (or less if you change the settings in iDrive). Next, he makes it sound as if Sat/Nav is always on. She only speaks if you input a destination which, come on, half the time if we are lost its easier to just use our phones! And lastly, I have never ever had the steering wheel volume button switch stations. He obviously hit the wrong button. The left side of the steering wheel switches through presets in which he could've just pressed the down button to go back to the previous station. With that said, I will be making a few videos about the E60 ownership from an owners point of view (DD) since there seems to be a lot of negativity about it on UA-cam that needs to be cleared up. So subscribe if you want, because the M5 is a fantastic car for the money!

When I saw an E60 for the first time as a kid, it was mind blowing. It was unlike any other car I had seen, looked so futuristic. I still love this car and I'd like to own one in the future, hopefully an M5 if I can afford it.

Everytime I see an E60 M5 I always envy the owner even after 15 years. It resembles a character that that none other series have. Try park next to the new F90 and you still find the E60 looks great after so many years. Hope many enthusiast will restore them as years pass many diminishing tho.

I've owned dozens of cars, and my e60 m5 was one of my favorite cars. Repair bills sucked, but the power and ride quality were actually enjoyable.
first off, it has 507 hp not 400 as jeremy said. Second, you can turn off the navigation voice, on the left hand on the map there is list of different things you can do. the top one is the speaker/sound for navigation, if you press it, her voice is off. Third, its not m5 logo on every panel. fourth, when he was trying to turn up the volume, he pressed the radio channel changer. And fifth, you do not have to fiddle in the i Drive menu to go back. you simply press the oposite button to change back to original radio channel and the use the arrows on the other side of the steering wheel to turn the music up or down.

It IS a pain in the arse to turn off the Sat Nav. I have a 530i E60 (owned for 4 1/2 years now). You have to go into the menu and find, somewhere, "Navigate" and tick that off.
Mine is the poverty-spec system (no map, just stupid arrows), so it's maybe different.
The indicators were also a pain in the arse before I got used to them. It seemed impossible to cancel them.
iDrive IS bad design with regards to these items. The software designers should have made the items intuitive, with the navigation On/Off being easy to access instead of buried away.
I have noticed that later E60 models have had the direct-access buttons placed back in the car (as in the E39), which lets you go straight to radio, CD etc. without having to fight your way through the iDrive menu (although I have set one of the steering wheel buttons to toggle through audio source).

Of those things I’m glad they captured to history to show just how wrong they are sometimes.
This is a true m car. Loud, extravagant, beautiful and my god is it fast. Back in a simpler time when the grills were not the whole car

i hate it when Top gear says a car is"complicated". because everytime they say that its just nit true. i mean how hard can it be?
Boy my dad had this car and when I drove it, it really is complicated. The hood is too long and wide so for reversing your car is quite difficult. The signaling that Jeremy talked about is also true you really don't know how to turn if off and I could really go on to be honest. Is a good car not incredible

+patrick svendsen Indeed, the indicator if you for example go left, and u need to close manually, just hit it left again it closes. Or give it a soft touch, not a full, so it blinkds 3 times automatically turns off. People are stupid and believe a video that is financed probably by not bmw :D
Also the radio problem I never encountered, why would I hit "next" instead of "volume up"?

I love german cars and I think that this BMW is really an ugly car. It was one of the most ugly BMW they ever made, but worst was the 7 series of that time.
