Great car, unusual yet good choice for a rental. One thing, EDC = Electronic Damper Control. If you set it to the maximum it makes the car firm and as you say unforgiving. Go to a lower setting and the car becomes softer and compliant...

If it’s a grocery getter and work commuter, there is absolutely zero need for 500 horsepower. You’re not gonna be going 200 mph in your daily driver. The highway’s got a speed limit. My daily has 200 horsepower, and as a daily driver, it fulfills its purpose perfectly.

He was commenting on the rough suspension while in M mode, which sets the EDC to level 2 and makes the suspension MUCH stiffer. When you set the dampers to soft, it is not too bad of a ride.

E60 M5 manual started in M.Y. 2007. I remember and always wanted. It took 10 years, but found a 2008 M.Y. 6spd and love it!
This car gets slammed for reliability, but when serviced correctly, is not near as bad as some other German offerings.
Rod bearings (have not been done at 80k miles), but monitoring with Blackstone oil analysis and good old fashion "sound detection"
VANOS H.P. line can fail, throttle actuators can be rebuilt.
Most dangerous item is a leaking fuel injector. Can result in hydro lock, bent rod, and destroy engine. Again, manageable with proper maintenance and not running with MIL light.
    Very fun car!

I am the proud owner of one of the 300, E63 M6 Coupe Manuals. I've actually never had it on the road yet because I bought it already with a shot VANOS pump. I have the engine removed right now and I'm doing several things including the rod bearings. Can't wait to get that thing on the road and feel what it can do!

I have a lot of dream cars, from the likes of Lamborghini and Aston Martin and various “exotic” brands. Unfortunately, as a college student who is graduating in a year, those cars are reserved for 30’s and 40’s, if I’m lucky, with a 12 year loan. That leaves me with around $30k for a car after college that will get me to and from a desk job. I could either get a new Honda Civic that will be reliable and have good MPG ratings, but having a slice of exotic car ownership that I could theoretically drive every day is very appealing.
I’ve personally driven in one, and I’ve also driven in cars like a Huracan and Murcielago SV (in my profile pic!). I kid you not, the M5 truly compares in craziness and drama that the half million dollar Lambo’s create. Revving to 8k RPM literally feels like warp speed, and it can drift any corner with half throttle with the EDC turned off. I’ve also driven a new M4, and while it compares with power, the M5 beats it in regard to sheer scariness - it literally scared the crap out of me if I gunned the M5, not so much with the M4. You genuinely feel like you’re going warp-speed.
I think this car, as unreliable as it is, is the coolest car in the world for the money. The maintenance and gas costs are high, but to someone who wants a piece of exotic lifestyle, it’s worth it.
At the end of the day, would you rather get into your Civic and blend in with everyone else and hate driving back home every day, or would you like to come out of the office, turn on your V10 monster of an engine, rev it to 8k RPM on the onramp, and smile the whole way, not wanting to turn it off and just keep driving?

I own a 2009 M5 that I picked up a little over 2 1/2 years ago. It came with 31k miles, fully loaded for $27k. Since then I have logged about 20k miles and use it year-round including winter with Blizzak tires. I get excellent traction wet/dry/snow, unless I hit an ice patch. This is an amazing car and if you can pick one up and not go broke if you have to pay for a major repair job, then by all means, go for it! You won't be sorry. I can smoke almost every car I come across in reality. Sure there are a very small handful of cars that I meet on the road that can pull ahead, but anything that could "smoke" this car is probably not street legal.
The best part of having a 500hp car is not the off-the-line acceleration, though that is fun too. The best part is when I am in the fast lane and get behind a slow car that doesn't want to move over and is the type of jerk that will speed up if you try to pass. All I need is the space to move over to the right and about 3 car lengths ahead of the car in front. At 70MPH, I can drop it down from 7th gear into 4th gear, which pops the RPMs up in the 5k range, where the power band is. Then, before the jerk can step on the gas to try to prevent me from passing, he (yes, always a dude that does this...) is looking at my tail lights as I blow past going about 100-110+ if I don't let off the gas. Even if it is a powerful car, the delayed reaction they have means that there I have never experienced a situation on the road where I am not way past them before they react. And you can have that power too, if you have some upfront capital and are willing to take on the risk of a major repair.
Here is some practical stuff... Oil is 10W60, which Castrol, Royal Purple, and some other sell. Even in bulk, the oil is $12/qt, and you need to buy 10-12 quarts per change. 8qts goes into the engine, and then you need to add a quart every 2-3k miles, since you have so many piston rings for that oil to slip by just a little bit. Oil will last you about 10k miles though. The discussion on the rod bearings is all over on other forums. The general guidance here is that you should retain a sample of oil and can send it to a lab for metals analysis. This supposedly tells you how much metal is coming off of your rod bearings, and if it you are in need of a bearing replacement. At least there is a method to tell before your $25k engine breaks!
To be sure, I don't believe this car is for the person who saves his or her money to buy the next after market part for their Civic Si, and then does the labor themselves to save on cost (I used to be that person). This car is for the person who is looking for a $30-40k used luxury car that is willing to put a bunch of money aside to pay for a repair, and won't bat an eye at spending a few hundred to have an inspection, pay $2-3k for the inevitable new set of summer tires that you will need if you buy new, plus winter tires if you plan to drive in those conditions. If those numbers shock you, this car is not for you. If those numbers shock you, then be aware that this car comes with everything...except fuel economy. I average 12.5 mpg. If I am cruising for a couple hundred miles on the highway, I can get as high as 17-19, but that is no fun at all!

  • @OneIsDamned

I own an E60 545i. 4.5ltr V8 , 330bhp and its immense. Also the fact that you can pick up a top example for around 4k sterling is 👌. I shopped around and picked one up for 2.4k at a steal.
Would love to go bigger and better and get E60 M5 next. In my opinion the most beautiful M5 ever made. A real beast of a machine.

You'll never have a transmission issue with the SMGIII. You'll need to change the pump motor once in the life of the car ($300). The engine has minor maintenance issues that are all once in the lifetime of the car, VANOS hose, VANOS solenoids, throttle actuator gear. That's it.

    • @vrDarkone
      @vrDarkone 6 років тому +16

MrSuperawesome5000 the $300 hydrolic pump for the SMG 3 is mounted to the top of the trans bell housing and requires the trans to be dropped to put in.. So if your dropping the trans you might as well do the clutch and flywheel.. And in either case you need a very expensive computer to recalibrate the smg3 when your done. So your looking at least 2 grand to do the 300 dollar pump...

    • @MrSuperawesome5000
      @MrSuperawesome5000 6 років тому +15

vrDarkone If someone charged you for programming after they swapped your pump motor they ripped you off. It's plug and play.
And adding the cost of a new clutch to a job "just because" doesn't mean that job costs that much more it means you added in a clutch.

So many knock on the Bangle styling, and I agree the e65 pre-lci 7 series aged horribly, but the rest of BMW's lineup from his era still look great today. Modern BMW's are too conservative and don't stand out like the e60/e65/e90/x3/x5 did in their era.

    • @mcgusto82

All Bangle cars in their base model form were hideous. Horrible. They ruined the 7 for years. The went from handsome to.. idk. BMW brass had to step in and did not let Bangle mess up the 3. The M versions were decent but that’s obviously because they were redone very sporty.
In my opinion, recent years BMWs are are clean design. I like them.

Fell in love with this car ever since I raced the concept in Gran Turismo 4 and listened to Jeremy Clarkson cream himself over it on Top Gear stating how epic it is and how it was the best car he's ever driven.
Managed to get a fully loaded BMW Approved one with just 36K miles and 2 year warranty for £18000.
Within the first month clutch and diff went lol but all replaced under warranty for free...a warranty is a MUST on this beast.
That has been the only negative, the rest? Mindblowingly amazing. Geuinely incredible machine and once that SMG is mastered after a few thousand miles the partnership between gearbox and that epic V10 is a match made in heaven. I have since modified the exhaust and it is geuinely one of the best sounding cars of all time and EASILY the greatest sounding and performing M engine ever made (not that that's difficult after 2011, they all sound like shit compared to the V10 and I also own an F10 M5 so I'm not biased).
All in all I have the mentality that I own a legendary V10 4 door luxury 200MPH+ sub 4sec 0-60 supercar that unfortunately BMW will NEVER produce anything like this again that retailed for £80K (with the options I have) over 12 years ago for a fraction of the price...I don't mind if every few years I may need to put a little cash into it after getting such a bargain in the first place since steep depreciation has already taken place and having an Approved warranty means I don't ever have to worry about a thing.
If you can get a good one with a great service history that's been looked after and with a warranty then go get it, it's THAT amazing.
One of the best cars ever made. Fact.

Any car will give you hassles if not maintained well and on time. You shouldnt let this car sit for too long else things tend to go wrong. When the battery died and was replaced i had countless of errors the first few days from sensors failing to default errors that result in limp mode etc. i drove the car for 2 days consecutively and all the errors vanished. In its history its had £27100 in warranty claim (New SMG box, ECU, Shocks, clutch etc). Despite all this, i dont regret my purchase at all. that V10 sound is intoxicating and the intake noise in acceleration or at downshifts have me sold everytime. I had more headaches with my S1000RR than i had with the M5

You can get a better ride by switching out the run flats and using a tire with softer sidewalls. No spare makes that a bit scary if you have long commutes, but it works well for me on my 335. They also last longer which saves a couple grand.

@@William-Morey-Baker Not really. bringatrailer.com/bmw/e60-m5/ the avg sale price is right at 20k with lots in the 15k range, people have gotten them for 10k, they're remarkably cheap because people are stupid and will believe that the car is horrendously unreliable, without ever sitting in one. It's preventative maintenance, just like if you don't replace the timing chain on a Subaru at 100k, it will grenade the engine, all engines require preventative maintenance, and if you don't do it and expect the car to be like a plain jane 5 series that can take a million miles of beating with just changing the oil, then YES, you are going to grenade the engine.
I don't see why people can't seem to understand that this car in particular is just a little special, you can't treat it like every other car on the road, and if that's not for you, then buy another car, this one is solely for enthusiasts, not the everyday driver who's expecting every single car on the road to perform as well as a Toyota Corolla, if you're expecting that, then this is most definitely not for you, if you're the kind of person who isn't friends with their mechanic, this is not the car for you. If you expect that your 20k purchase price is all you're ever going to spend on the car, this is not the car for you.

I have a 2007 550i with the sport package and base automatic that I bought last year at 130k miles for 5k, and it's been the best purchase imaginable. I did have to spend 500 on a toolkit and parts to do the valve stem seals which is a common issue with the 4.8l 380hp v8 in these, but that wasn't that big of an issue, and she's running like a champ. It's also around 300 lbs lighter than the M5, and feels super agile, and fairly comfortable suspension while still very sporty, but I'm not sure how it directly compares to the M5's. Also the power band kicks in strong after 2800 RPM or so, so it does feel grunty. So if you don't necessarily want a ticking time bomb but still want a fast BMW, a 550i for around half to a third of the price could also be a great option.

I had a 2006 M5 SMG. With 22K on it, I decided to give it a moderate launch to explain to my uncle why this is a supercar...and he got the point. I stress "moderate". About 5 miles later, had the sprocket icon appear on the dash for the trans fault, but the car drove great. Made an appt at BMW to have it serviced a couple days later, and they told me it was an $10 sensor inside the transmission...but in order to fix that $10 sensor, they had to replace it to the tune of $8K. I had 3 days of factory warranty left at that point...thank god. But, it would have been $8K out of pocket to replace it in the following week. Got rid of that car as soon as it was fixed. Again..."MODERATE", would not qualify as abusive at all. I still get mail for extended warranties for it in the mail. I loved the car, but that was enough. Never again.

However examples in equal quality to a E60 often run above 25k. It is the best of both worlds, if you want a fast exotic like car you have it or if you simply want a car that you can take on a road trip you also have it. There is nothing like driving a 4100 pound sedan with a screaming V10 under the hood to the grocery store to pick up some milk. Repairs come with any high class sports car just plan ahead and you will be fine! Also something he forgot to mention is the MPG, I average about 9-11 mpg. The gas tank on this car is very small so you will be at the gas station at least 2 times a week refilling it. But at that point it becomes Smiles per gallon.

Dark force, it's about engagement and a certain type of control. I appreciate both. Nothing like a finely tuned manual gearbox, the e46 m3 can turn anyone into a heel toe master. My e39 has a zf 5hp19 and is one of the best auto transmissions there is. Just change the filter and "lifetime" fluid every 50k

This is the car I pretty much wanted but I couldn’t afford it at the time because it was only out for a year at the time and I ended up buying a 550i M manual and I super-charged it and it’s got the same power as the M5 and it’s much much more of a sleeper so I’m pretty happy with it

Own the 2010 version and yes agree with you, had to rebuild the engine at a cost of 17K but i also overbored it 90thou, put in sleeves, stud kit, new h beam rods, new pistons and carbon rings, and high performance bearings. Also put in a Turner motorsports racing clutch and fly wheel getting rid of the two stage flywheel which is also another failure point.

While you were praising this "amazing V10 BMW engine" I remembered something. When you wrote for Jalopnik, did you ever meet the guy who wrote this article? The title is "BMW engines are gigantic pieces of shit." And fun thing, the article's lead photo is of a BMW V10... Dude's name was Freddy "Tavarish" Hernandez. But I still think he wrote the article as clickbait , Jalopnik probably only publishes what they think will get clicks.

internal vanos failure was something a racing BMW mechanic mentioned once to me when i was pitching maybe swapping my e92's v8 for a v10. Its basically the fact that vanos lines run under the timing chain and those lines burst in racing situations. and are quite pricey to rebuild as well.

I have had both. The E30 was a muscle car, the V8 loads of low down grunt, better built. The E60 whist felt lacking low down wasn't, it was just so much more alive past 5k, build quality wasn't as good, but that v10!! Masterful when on song, supercar engine!!.... Both had faults and both have plus points

I've had mine now for nearly 5 years... Only broke down once after it decided the oil for the slave cylinder wasn't producing enough pressure to activate the clutch, it didn't break down as such (threw up a warning and wouldn't let me select a gear - it's designed to stop you destroying it so will do what it can with error warnings... And no it doesn't spit error warnings every day either).... And as for the clutch, replaced after 100k miles... And that gave the tell tale slipping at 5k revs
Didn't cost me my first born child!!!
Less than £750 with parts and I'm sure your Ford focus will cost you the same to do
