The E60 BMW M5 is an amazing car -- but it's horribly unreliable. Today I'm reviewing a 2008 M5 with a 6-speed manual to show you why the E60 M5 is so cool -- and also why you shouldn't get one. I'm showing you all the key quirks and features of the BMW M5, and the most interesting things about the 2008 BMW M5.

Just did rod bearings on an 08 m5 with 140k miles and let me tell you the previous owner was persistent on letting the car warm up before beating on it and that makes all the difference. They had a ton of life left on them. Key to this cars longevity is letting it warm up before play time. It’s 10w60 which is syrup when cold.
Great comment. I have a manual 07 with 85k miles. It seems the warm up period is the difference. Mine apparently had a rebuild at 37k miles due to the bearings. New oil every 3k miles and proper warm up should make the difference.
The problem with BMW M cars with high revving normally aspirated engines is that they were bought on finance and ragged to death from cold then given back.
Finding one that's been looked after is rare because so few of them were bought to be owned long term. They all seem to have 50-150k miles now. Find an exotic car like an period Ferarri and most of them are barely broken in.
@@matthewnicholas6365 very true used car prices are insane now though.
Totally agree, I do the same, 10 miles warm up and then gradually crank it up, same with the cool down, last 5 miles let it glide and take it easy. My SMG pump failed, probably the electric part, can't wait to get it back in the road.
Also doesn't help that BMW decided to link the warm up lights to the coolant temp, which is boiling in about 2 minutes, whereas the 10w60 oil takes about an hour 🤣
I think the M5 and my ex wife are related somehow.

As an ex owner of a 2006 M6 (essentially the same car in coupe version) I have to agree fully with Doug’s review of the M5. Loved driving it...when it actually worked. I had the proverbial love hate relationship with it. I’ve moved on to a 911 which stirs my soul even more.
I was a salesperson for BMW when this car was new. It was a long time ago, but I remember on top of the $105k price, there was a $5500 gas guzzler tax, a $5000 dealer markup, and no test drives. Seriously, you had to overpay, and buy it on reputation alone... no test drives for a car that cost as much as modest condominium in that era. I still love that car though... so much that occasionally I consider buying one now that they're dirt cheap
Why weren’t test drives allowed? Is that common with expensive cars?
Damn I remember a few months ago I rented a brand new 2023 M5 off Enterprise. Now I see one down the street at my local dealer 2010 M5 pristine with only 120,000km on the ODO no accidents all maintenance done for only $10,800. They got a 2014 Corolla for $12,500 and the dealers been pushing the cheaper BMW on me for days now. I REALLY want one but know the hassle and headache that comes with it. Honestly, I know he keeps trying to cover his tracks, I can't help but feel that he's just biased. He didn't mention the exhaust note, didn't even really explain the MPower mode well, nor the styling or performance bits like the front splitter and wider fenders. I think he went into this with his mind made up. He said it was all around better than the e39 but the final score doesn't really reflect that. He also didn't mention that the seats adjust while driving to keep you in your seat. The bolstering actually adjusts from side to side while taking high speed turns.
SamiDullard10 Doug is clearly NOT biased he straight up says how great of a car this is in the beginning but he just points out the obvious flaw of this car and that is reliability
This is Doug's Homage to Regular Car Reviews

The rod bearing issue is what happens when you give a car with a racing engine to plebs to drive .
In order to have a motor like this rev as high as it does , you have to run tight bearing tolerances .
They also run a fairly heavy weight oil so that when up to temp the oil can protect the engine correctly.
So if the car isn't warmed up very gently, watching the oil temperature and not gunning it AT ALL until up to full temp , you will damage the bearings
If the oil is not thin enough to flow through the bearing , ut cannot protect the bearing.
Most normal car drivers just wouldn't understand this at all .
I fully agree on warming up the engine. 10W-60 is sugar syrup when cold.
I've got an S54 which has the exact same issue. It takes an eternity to get the oil up to temp. After blowing £1200 on new bearings though, I'll be taking that eternity to warm it up EVERY damn time
@Matthew Nicholas
I work on old aircooled Volkswagens and build larger aircooled performance engines for them , 2.3 litre 200 hp sort of motors as well as 2 litre ish ones for campers .
They all have bigger sump extensions , full flow oiling and external oil coolers and henceforth hold about 7 to 8 litres of oil in total .
I have Autometer gauges in them and the oil takes a fairly long time to get up to temperature.
I make it a rule of thumb to not give them any more than gentle driving till past 150 deg Fahrenheit and no full throttle till at 180
Most people are shockingly stupid.
So I have a question I know how the problems with the rod bearings are very complicated somebody explain to me so if the clearance is very tight then why they couldn't use a thinner engine oil to prevent that problem but then when gets warm then is too thin to protect at high rpm
NOW have any bmw brain out there have tried the Shell Rotella oil like the T4 15w40 or even the full synthetic T6 5w40 ? Because that is a great oil who knows we might had the solution for those problems on front of our nose and we were busy looking for something else

Just picked up one of the beauties (w/SMG) and absolutely love it! And I am a BMW fanatic who currently owns a E39 540i Sport, E53 X5 4.8is, and F30 328i. EVERY car has its issues and I have a list of them for the aforementioned cars. It's funny though, I am not sure how someone would equate a 507hp, 383ft lbs, 8250RPM redline, and 205mph top speed car with being reliable? If you want a sporty reliable car, get a Honda Accord GT. If you want an amazing one-of-a-kind vehicle, you have to be realistic about what you are getting into and be ready to maintain it.
So stunningly beautiful yet so unreliable... reminds me of my ex girlfriend. 💔

A friend of mine had one of these. Drank gas, used oil right out of the gate, but was near perfect when it ran. He bought it new, suffered the depreciation, had it for 3 years and poured money into it. He replaced the vanos and the bearings . On his way home from the dealer from the repair, a guy in a truck blew a red light and totaled it. My friend didn't get hurt until the insurance company settled with him. His next car was a lexus. He hates it everyday, but it's never let him down.
What Lexus did he drive?
I hate my Lexus too. Miss my Beamer.
I had the rare opportunity to sit and hang out in one of these, and it actually was one that ran! I even got the rare opportunity to hear it running! What a great sounding engine, when it doesn’t blow up!

Honestly it just depends on how it was cared for you can tell right away based on how the seller or owner warms it up. I passed on three different m5 because the sellers didn't warm the v10 up properly once I ran into a seller that was more worried about warming it up and pre trip care prior to test drive I knew I was at the right place. 10w 60 Liqui Moly Race GTI highly recommend 👌

LOL....Just bought a 2016 M5....you guys are scaring me. but really...I have noticed it as well.
@McLarenBMW ...My husband tells me "It will get great mileage if you would stop switching to manual and dogging it." He is exaggerating a bit but isnt that the whole point in owning a car like like that? I live in South and having a car with a turbo boost engine demands a little petal to the metal show off. If not, you might as well sell it. LOL....blessings!!!!
@McLarenBMW ...Thank You!!!!
And the reliability issues with the E60 are the reason I bought a W211 AMG... I had a chance to drive one of those E60s with the SMG gearbox back in 2011 and I was downright impressed with the road manners and how light the car was on its feet. It's an impressive package if you've got $$$ to throw at it.... judging by the number of E60 M5s I see on the road these days, they've mostly gone to the cutter's yard. I see more E39 M5s being used than E60s in a place like LA County, and that's a pretty telling observation... My independent mechanic who does Merc and BMW had an E60 M5 stuck on his lift for 6 months because the owner couldn't come up with cash for a new engine for a while... These are not cars you see advertised with high mileage. Whereas, go over to the manufacturer from Stuttgart, and you've got AMGs with 200-300k miles being sold all day long on Craigslist. Tells you all you need to know about the reliability... but the E60 is a far superior dynamic package to the W211, especially if you enjoy canyon carving...

Francesco Vicenza No we only have the Elmore expensive models
Francesco Vicenza I think it's the same for how Mustangs and Corvettes seem overrated here in the states. They're so ubiquitous, and 75% of the time the mustang driving by is a v6
"Which extended warranty should I get?"

Manual + Wood Trim = perfection
Just like my X5:)
@@carmadnab You did a manual conversion in your X5? This I gotta see...
Opel Vectra A had the most fuel efficient 121 cubi inch (2 liter) engine in the world by 1992 and the GSi trim (with the then-new sequential "air-mass based" fuel injection) had real wood in the doors, shift knob and consoles. It made 150hp and 155lbft of torque without turbos. In '92, that was pretty much as good as a regular car would get.

This car has had the same known problems for about 18 years. If you haven't figured that out yet, dont buy it. It's cheap to buy but expensive to maintain. If you're not a mechanic or dont have disposable income, STAY TF AWAY. the parts alone can get expensive fast. The name of the game is: preventative maintenance when owning an s85. Im at 97k 😂 in the next year ill probably spend like 10k on parts just to keep that check engine light at bay. Im not trying to scare anybody but i want you to know the truth. Another truth is: if you can afford to have this car dialed in, it is the greatest sedan of all time. The sound this car makes is a drug. If you own this car or have driven it, you know what i mean!
Honestly I’ve been dying to buy a 2010 BMW M5 up in Canada for only $10,800. No damage clean title everything’s maintained and the dealer has been pushing me to buy this vs a 2012 Toyota Corolla for $11,500. Seriously THANK YOU for this wake up call! As a university student only 26 I don’t think I could afford to put $10K to prevent that engine light. That’s the one thing I’m scared about too as the car looks perfect and throws no codes but in the back of my mind I’m concerned it’s going to go once I buy it. This might be enough persuasion to go pickup the Corolla next week or maybe look at Lexus or Acura. I want something sexy and nice as I’ve saved up so much for years but, I think I’ll have to walk away from my dream car for now. Maybe another 10 years down the line when I get my degree and make bank. Thanks for the warning honestly you probably saved me an additional 10K on top of the purchase price every year!
@JuliasCesar 2010 is literally the best year to own. How many miles does it have? Does it have service records? Do you want to daily it?
@@whiskylitt8880 seriously?! I never knew it was the best one to own I might have to move fast on getting that car sooner than later! It only has about 110,580km on it! Quite an impressive service record as it was mainly used to and from the office with the previous owner. Only downside is the fuel lines need to be replaced soon. Not a big deal as it’s not needed right away still life left in the older ones. I also do plan on driving it as a daily any idea on if it’s a good idea or would it be better to buy it store it in the garage and use it as a weekend or holiday car? Honestly I’d buy it just to store it and get a clunker Honda to run as my daily if that’s what it takes it’s just so beautiful! No body damage or anything! Thanks for any advice btw! I appreciate it!!
@JuliasCesar it sounds like a well maintained car. If this is what you want, then yes, do it. But if you're on a budget this would serve best as a second car. Buy a something cheap to drive on bad weather days, etc. My daily is a suburban. My m5 is a 2006 which is the worst year to own lol but it was my dream spec. Black exterior and wheels with red interior. All the problems it had were fixed years ago. I also have an f10 m5 competition but nothing beats the v10!
@JuliasCesar just so you know, the rod bearing situation is over blown tremendously. Whenever I'm going to use the car, I wake up, turn the car on, and then take a shower and get ready. By the time I get in it, the oil temperature is good, and I can get on the gas. I had fun learning the SMG transmission and how to get it to drive smoothly. Remember this: if you drive the car fast and do a lot of gear changes, you have to cool down the transmission by driving moderately. Example: I'm on a back road ripping through gears for about 40-60 miles. On the last few miles before I park it, I'll just cruise to cool everything down. The TCU sits on top of the transmission and if you dont cool the tranny down it will over heat the TCU and you'll start seeing fault codes. This is how the smg nightmare stories began for most people but they didn't know it at the time lol
