Great and well rounded review ! I grew up in Astoria, Oregon. Got to slightly tour-invited by my friend then whom was a friend of the family homeowners of The Goonies house to see the house then ( must have been the early 90's then ). I also lived a mile from Young's River Falls where part of Ninja Turtles III : Turtles In Time where the waterfall-japan scene was shot-filmed. Also took violin lessons next to the house used in Free Willy. Also must admit, used that bathroom as featured in the fight scene in Kindergarten Cop.
I would also recommend on this theme-review of great 80's family films would be Explorers, Monster Squad, Flight of the Navigator...

"Truffle Shuffle", "Goonies Never Say Die" and a whole lot more! Yeah, An Excellent 80s Adventure Classic with an outstanding cast, wonderful direction and amazing setting where the boys found a treasure map that will get to a ship with a pirate named, "One Eye Willy" and then, with joining in with the rest with the bad guys chasing them into the cave and the fun starts! Seen it many times and have it on both DVD and a Blu-ray Triple Feature with the "Gremlins" films!

Great film, and all time classic for sure! After first two Lethal Weapon films, it's my favorite Richard Donner film, and it's definitely one of his best. Good review Mike!

A classic! it was one of the first movies i saw in theaters at age 3 with Black Cauldron and Ghostbusters 85 re-issue when i lived in Flordia, my big brothers were 13 and 10 back in 85 as they saw it first and i saw it in a dollar theater in August 35 years ago.
Happy 35th anniversary to a classic adventure.

I will say this about the deleted octopus scene though, it is probably one of the few times in the film where you actually do sympathize with Mouth.

Awesome review Mike The Goonies is a classic and one of my favorite films I watch over and over, I might pick up the 4K Blu-ray (which comes out today) soon.

The way you feel about this movie Mike, is pretty much how I feel about something like: "Toy Story". Because I'm a big Toy Story fan. Toy Story's actually my all-time favorite animated movie. I just adore Toy Story. I love/adore it so much, because it contains a lot of things that I feel are really lacking in animated movies nowadays. I feel animated movies nowadays just don't manage to accomplish what Toy Story accomplished back in 1995.

Corey was pretty breakout in Gremlins-- which also gets a reference in this. He might not have done much, but he WAS pretty well known.

Not on the same level he was after this film and The Lost Boys.

Great review Mike, lost count of how many times I've watched this timeless classic. Have to be honest Mama Fratelli creeped me out more as a kid than Sloth did.

I was never that much of a fan, same with Monster Squad I don't enjoy juvenile terror movies I think you either take to them or you don't. Only thing I do love in it is everything with Chunk and Sloth, they're an awesome and hilarious team!

You know what they should make an official film sequel I mean back then in the 80’s after director Richard Donner left and producer Steven Spielberg left when The Goonies (1985) was a successful film 🎞 but It needs a sequel for the best film of all time like they will add New filmmakers like Italian Film Producer Dino De Laurentiis (who was a Producer of King Kong 1976 Version and Conan The Barbarian 1982 Version) a Canadian/American film producer like Ivan Reitman (the guy who made Ghostbusters 1984 version) and Director Don Coscarelli (the guy who made Phantasm & The Beastmaster) so that way they will take over to make a sequel out of the most popular film 🎞 so that way they will call’ed it The Goonies 2 In Search Of Monster Island 🌴 (1987) so they can bring back the same actors like Sean Astin as Mikey Josh Brolin as Brand Corey Feldman as Mouth Jonathan Ke Quan as Data Jeff Cohen as Chunk Kerri green as Andy Martha Plimpton as Stef and two new Goonie kid’s name Molly Ringwald as Malinda (Mikey’s girlfriend that she move to Mikey’s Neighborhood) and Leo O’Brien as Joey (Mouth’s buddy from one of his next door neighbors) but they will bring back John matuszak as Sloth (that he always said hey you guys) even they will add New Bad guys known as the Monder day pirates 🏴‍☠️ like co stars ⭐️ Christopher Walken as Gary (The leader of the Modern day Pirates that he’s obsessed too look 👀 for gold and diamonds on Monster island) even Nicholas worth Brion James Randy Savage/Macho man Michael Berryman Carter Wong & Al Pacino as The Bad Guy’s Henchmen and Adrienne Barbeau as Lisa the hunch lady (that she’s always wanted Diamonds 💎 Of her own) & even they will add Stop motion animation Dinosaurs 🦖🦕 like Tyrannosaurus Rex 🦖 Triceratops Brontosaurus 🦕 Stegosaurus Pteranodon Dimetrodon Spinosaurus Kaprosuchus 🐊 Woolly Mammoth 🦣 Giant gourd sloth 🦥 Gigantopithecus (a.k.a The Giant Ape 🦧 ) and The Minotaur but The Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕Gigantopithecus giant orangutan ape 🦧 and The The Minotaur are going to be stop motion animated by Jim Danforth & The Chiodo brothers even Creature Animatronic by Carlo Rambaldi Special Visual Effects by Ernest Farino Sloth Make up artist by Rob Bottin Music by Dave Grusin Writer by Philip Kaufman Screenplay by Chris Columbus Producer by Ivan Reitman & Charles band executive producer by Dino De Laurentiis & Gene Roddenberry Directed by Don Coscarelli so The Goonies 2 film will came out in March 6th 1987 it will opened against Angel Heart in that same year but in this movie sequel the Fratelli’s are going too be out of the picture but the film critics Siskel and Ebert might give it two thumps up 👍🏽 or down 👎but film 🎞 critic Leonard Maltin that The Goonies 2 Movie 🎥 might be a Terrible film 🎞 sequel but it turn’s out to be a knock off of outer films in the past like King Kong (1976) and The Blue Lagoon (1980) but it will be still from Warner Bros Or De entertainment group, but the worst part in The Goonies 2 Movie 🎥 Mikey (Played By Sean Astin) and Melinda (Played by Molly Ringwald) went Swimming 🏊 naked in the lagoon and they have sex but they got them a PG Rated in this movie Sequel.

Solid job on the review, Mike. A classic flick from the 80s. Always found it weird that the Chunk character is kinda away from the Goonies for a huge section thus he doesn't get to experience as muc of the adventure as the others. But yeah the score is well done, the cast work well together and the movie is still fun to see nowadays as it was back then.

I can deal with Chunk being away from the group for so long because it provides some classic moments like the tell all with the Fratelli's and it sets up the epic moment when he returns with Sloth to help save the day.

I will always say the film is overrated in my opinion
