The Goonies: What's It Really About?

  • The nostalgia of 1980’s coming of age films is an unbeatable feeling. There’s nothing quite as comforting as sitting on your couch on a rainy day and watching a good old-fashioned adventure from your formative years. And for some, Richard Donner’s The Goonies is the pinnacle of such nostalgia. The movie follows a group of teenagers who call themselves The Goonies (after their neighborhood in Astoria, OR) who embark on a treasure hunt through the town’s underground caves in hopes to find the legendary ‘rich stuff’ that local icon One-Eyed-Willy left behind. Along the way they’re in for encounters with the town’s local crime family, The Fratelli’s. They’re after the treasure themselves and they’re willing to go to nearly any length to get it.
The movie is a classic, of course, but something that we feel has been missing from the internet is speculation on the film’s many themes and what the movie is truly about. Now, even if the film holds no deeper than meeting than just being a fun adventure movie- it would still be one of the greatest films of the decade. However, we think there may be more than meets the eye with this film and today we’re going to break down the movie, as well as the filmmakers involved in making it to figure out what the Goonies is REALLY about.

Saw it age 14 when it came out. My son was born in 2006 and when he was 11 I showed him The Goonies and he absolutely LOVED it! It's timeless plot could be a famous five story (in fact i think the plot of one of the famous five stories is them finding pirate treasure and saving Kirrin Cottage from repossession) While having a total 80's feel to it when kids were still allowed to roam free......

When I was a kid, i used a tape recorder to record the Cyndi Lopers song "Goonies r' Good Enough" when they play it during the credits. It was on my bike riding cassette, which also had such bangers as the Back to the Future theme and the Fright Night theme. I liked soundtracks as a youngster.

To me, this story has always been about a specific type of kid. The one that is inspired by their parents work and stories enough to go out in to the world, and apply what they've learned from their parents. In this case, we have a historian parent who's kid applies their teachings to help "save the world" as they know it (the world being their community).

Not a bad take. There were a couple of cringe mistakes in the video that seem all too common for youtubers who work on their own (so no offense intended). "Sniff out" means to find; "snuff out" mean to kill (originally to put out a candle or fire). "Soldier" is not a general term for war fighter. Soldiers are always in the Army. The Navy has sailors.

As many times as I'd watched "The Goonies" since its release, it was only in recent years that I realized there is a seemingly subtle aspect about Clarke Devereaux, aka "Mouth," that isn't so subtle if thought about; that being the full extent of his nickname, "Mouth." Throughout the movie, Mouth is often the most knowledgeable about a lot of random things. From the most obvious being of knowing Spanish, to the smallest bits of info like knowing about Detroit (where Data is supposed to be moving to,) knowledged about coin-money dates and stamped imagery (with some exception,) plumbing systems, and even fine dining (shown when he gives his extravagant dinner order to Ma Fratelli.) Combine his exceptional knowledge with his sarcastic wit, then you realize that Clarke Devereaux is not just a "mouth," he's actually a "Smart-Mouth."

I've just realised... and sorry if someone has said this in the comments already...Rise of Skywalker stole the 'locating the treasure with artefact and a vista' thing. Goonies was such a favourite movie for me as a child and someone got me the DVD as a Secret Santa gift as it's still great as an adult. Such an amazing cast and a really underrated score. Interesting theory on the adults, but it's just as plausible that this is simply their time to be the heroes. Part of why it is fantastic is not only the adventure and the joy, but the moments and sadness and, for a lack of a better term, reality check. Cory Feldman's speech about his wish, which you played, is one of those standout cinema performances.

I guess The Goonies doesn’t get reviewed often, but hasn’t stopped people from thinking they’re smart for saying the treasure they found isn’t theirs. In my opinion, even if they can’t cash in on the jewels, it’s still a historical find. You know what they should make an official film sequel I mean back then in the 80’s after director Richard Donner left and producer Steven Spielberg left when The Goonies (1985 Movie) was a successful film 🎞 but It needs a sequel too the best film of all time like they will bring New filmmakers like Gene Roddenberry (who was a Produced of Star Trek The Motion Picture) Film Producer Walter Hill (who was a Director of Streets of Fire) a Canadian/American film producer like Ivan Reitman (who was the Director of Ghostbusters 1984 version) and New Film 🎥 Director name Don Coscarelli (the guy who directed The Beastmaster) so that way they will take over to make a sequel out of the most popular film 🎞 so that way they will call’ed it The Goonies 2 In Search 🔍 Of Monster 👹 Island 🏝 (1987 that should been released back then in that same year) so they can bring back the same actors like Sean Astin as Mikey Josh Brolin as Brand Corey Feldman as Mouth Jonathan Ke Quan as Data Jeff Cohen as Chunk Kerri green as Andy Martha Plimpton as Stef and two new members of The Goonies name Molly Ringward as Malinda (Mikey’s crush 😻 that she move to Mikey’s Neighborhood) and Leo O’Brien as Joey (Mouth’s buddy from one of his next door neighbors) but they will bring back John matuszak as Sloth (that he always said HEY YOU GUYS!!) even they will add New Bad guys known as the Drug Smugglers the terrorist group like Christopher Walken as Gary (The leader of the Drug Smugglers that he’s obsessed too look 👀 for gold and diamonds 💎 on Monster 👹 island 🏝 ) even other co stars Nicholas Worth Brion James Randy Savage/Macho Man Jon Voight Carter Wong & Gene Simmons as The Bad Guy’s Henchmen and Adrienne Barbeau as Lisa the hunch lady (that she’s always wanted Diamonds 💎 Of her own) & even they will add Stop motion animation Dinosaurs 🦖🦕 and Giant Gorilla Ape 🦍 (Like Willis O’Brien & Ray Harryhausen) like Stop Motion Animated Tyrannosaurus Rex 🦖 Triceratops Brontosaurus 🦕 Stegosaurus Pteranodon Dragon 🐉 Woolly Mammoth 🦣 & The White Pongo (a.k.a The Giant Gorilla Ape 🦍 ) but The Dinosaurs 🦖 🦕 Dragon 🐉 and White Pongo (Giant Gorilla Ape 🦍) are going to be stop motion animated by Jim Danforth even Creature Animatronic by Carlo Rambaldi Special Visual Effects by John Bruno and Jon Berg Sloth Make up artist by Thomas R. Burman Jungle setting and temple setting Production designer by Peter Lamont Music by Dave Grusin Writer by Philip Kaufman Screenplay by Chris Columbus & Stuart Gordon Producer by Ivan Reitman & Walter Hill executive producer by Gene Roddenberry Directed by Don Coscarelli so The Goonies 2 film will came out in March 6th 1987 it will opened against Angel Heart in that same year but in this movie sequel the Fratelli’s are going too be out of the picture in this Movie 🎥 but the film critics Siskel and Ebert might give The Goonies 2 Movie 🎥 two thumps up 👍 or down 👎 if The Goonies 2 movie will be a good sequel or a bad sequel but the film 🎞 critic Leonard Maltin will think 💭 that The Goonies 2 Movie 🎥 might be a Terrible film 🎞 sequel but it turn’s out to be a knock off of other films in the past like King Kong (1976) and The Blue Lagoon (1980) but it will be still from Warner Bros but this Film Sequel called The Goonies 2 will have special visual effects are going too be filmed in the special effects company called Boss Film Studios Film 🎥 Company but this time The Goonies Never 👎 Say Die!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No offense to anyone but I have to ask something MAD magazine pointed out in their spoof of this movie. How'd they get away with the following stereotypes?:1.The Asian kid of the Goonies can't speak proper English,2.the crooks are Italian,3.the fat kid of the Goonies is Jewish,4.the maid is Hispanic and dense,5.the adults are WASPS.Remember people, MAD Magazine pointed this all out first so be mad at them not me for asking this.

The 80s were a different time. That's it. Period. We could get away with a whole hell of a lot more back then when I was a kid. Nobody cared, nowadays, everyone thinks they're so "woke" meanwhile they pick and choose what to be "woke" about.

Hot take, it is a lot of screaming kids and just really really loud movie overall. Loved it when I was a child, now I find it shallow and loud and exhausting - much like kids in general.

Since the child actors were not paid a lot Donner actually paid for their college tuition for them out of his own pocket

Note that Sloth is also an adult, who, while ugly on the outside, is still a kid on the inside, that's another facing adulthood factor. As we all enter adulthood, we worry about fitting in as adults, it's only the outliers, the standouts, who still can retain their childhood, no matter how weird it appears on the outside.

It's about Short Round time traveling to the 80's to have an Indiana Jones style adventure with other kids. Also, I'm decisively on Team Andy. Her taste in boys was questionable at best, even when she was effectively the same character in Lucas and chose Charlie Sheen, but she had a warmth and kindness to her that's very endearing. I never rooted for Mikey more than when she planted that kiss on him.
