The scene where they are walking up the hill to the restaurant always stuck with me, and everytime I see it, it gives me chills. Idk why. The dark setting, music, and ambiance? Love it. Actually the while Oregon setting is amazing.
I watch the Goonies, for the first time in 1988 on a rainy day, at the Boys and Girls Club, in Northern California. I hadn't known how close in proximity I was to Astoria. The movie matched the weather outside that day spot on. My neighborhood felt very much like the Goondocks. I'll always remember this movie with that nostalgia feeling. I was the same age as the kids.
Those commentaries are much more in interesting and enjoyable to listen to than your earlier ones with the two other guys. I used to skip those whenever a notification came up because of the silliness but now I'm eagerly waiting for new ones! Keep up the good work!
I remember going to the Canterbury Cannon cinema, Kent in late 1985 with my brother and my mum, I was 12. A typical saturday matinee flick, right after lunch (sic) at McDonalds. I later purchased the video game (a cassette tape!) for my Atari 800xl which was not bad given the capability of home computers back then. The movie really defined a generation like mine. Gremlins, Karate Kid, Ghostbusters, Beverly Hills Cop, Back to the Future, Breakfast Club. We were so fortunate, kids today would not understand. In the 80s, we had no internet, no cellular phones, no cheap laptops, no coffee chains, access to 4 channels on TV (at least in the UK), cable or satellite was a luxury and a remit for hotel chains, VCRs were expensive (even renting), only source of entertainment was going to your local cinema and hit the mall on saturdays....
@@bjrmagic1 Amazing movies, amazing music, amazing fashion. So much creativity. And the UK high street was alive! Today, it's gone. The Internet killed it. Just walk through any city centre in Kent, it's shocking....
I just watched The Burbs again (second Saturday of July is "International Burbs Day") with the commentary by Oliver and Brad (yes, I did buy pretzels, brownies, plenty of beer cans to crush AND called the pizza dude for the occasion) and at the end Brad said he wanted to do Explorers commentary next. So you did The Goonies instead. Would still love to see you do Explorers too, I love that movie and I miss the 80s.
My mom took my brother and me to see Goonies when it came out, and she liked it quite a bit. The TV version cut out a number of things, including the scene with the kids banging on the pipes and causing the water pressure in the showers/toilets to go crazy. She took us to see Explorers, too, and we loved that as well. Nobody ever talked about that movie, so it always felt like we'd discovered some secret no one else knew about. The thing about Explorers is that a lot of people don't care for the last act...
The last act was made up on set! The script didn't have an ending, but the studio persuaded Joe Dante to just start shooting, and figure that out. He had an interest in Collective Conscious and sharing of intelligence telepathically, which he wanted to incorporate, but never really came out. The Dick Miller character was supposed to return, and yes he'd had visions like the kids do, when he was a kid. The studio also cut the shooting schedule, and forced Dante to just hand in what he had so far, which may have impacted on the final act.
The TV version of this in the UK was cut to ribbons. Oh my God becomes Oh my Gosh, any swearing is taken out, the tongue scene is removed, Mikey seeing Sloth is removed, the discovery of the body is taken out, the entire scene of Chunk having the threat of his hand being blended is removed, the discovery of Chester Cobblepot was removed ... the entire thing becomes a mess in it’s stripped down form.
The frightening scene which they find Chester Copperpot's skeleton was in the 1988 ITV broadcast but it was cut in the 1992 ITV broadcast. In the 1992 broadcast of the movie, it cuts from Mikey saying "Hey! you guys. There's a lantern. Someone must had been here before us." as The Goonies approaches Copperpot's skeleton to Chunk continuing to cry telling his life story to The Fratelli's. In the 1988 ITV broadcast, Sloth growling at Chunk was trimmed. It cuts from Chunk introducing himself to Sloth to Sloth giggling and bouncing in his chair.
You know what shits me? Ollie JUST puts out new content and there's already comments for "do this movie next" Geez people, be happy with what you get fer chrissake!!
Can’t wait to listen tonight. Probably my favorite movie. Never noticed until I was an adult that mouth says you wouldnt be here if it wasnt in response to thats my moms most favorite piece.
@@zachthezombie Sadly, I believe the missing footage is lost. Also they were forced to stop filming before they were finished, so some stuff was never shot.
@@zachthezombie Yeah, a new management took over at the studio, and as often happens they want the films greenlit by the previous management to fail, so their stuff can look better. As such they moved up Explorers release date, and said "doesn't matter how far off finishing you are, just give us the footage you've got". To add insult to injury, the release date they choose was the same weekend Live Aid was held! Unsurprisingly, the film was a flop.
Goonies sequel has been mentioned along with another movie I'd like to see it's Labrenth 2 there has not been any previews on them so I am not certain if they will really happen at all .
anyone remember the first time you saw the 12 minute long 2 part "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough" Music Video featuring World Wrestling Federation pro-wrestlers Captain Lou Albano, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Wendi Richter, The Fabulous Moolah, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, Freddie Blassie and André the Giant (part 2 only); Steven Spielberg; David Wolffe (Lauper's manager); The Goonies cast (except for Kerri Green, Anne Ramsey, Joe Pantoliano, Robert Davi and John Matuszak); and the then relatively unknown Bangles as a group of female pirates. Lauper's mother appears as "Catrina, Cyndi's mother" and the "sea hag". Part 1 of the video debuted on MTV before The Goonies opened in theaters and Part 2 premiered on MTV after the movie opened. On the DVD and blu-ray of The Goonies, both parts have been spliced together to form one video.
Adults didn't like it because it wasn't for them. It was for us. It was our time. Our time, down here.
This movie is like hot chicken soup when your not feeling well. It just makes you feel good. Classic.

Just discovered your commentaries. Fantastic work, guys. Listening to them all. :-)
1:10:08 - Chunk says "You smell like Phys. Ed." Phys. Ed. is short for Physical Education class or P.E. Basically Sloth smells like a locker room.
Soda Pop. Oh! Boy! I'm thirsty. Damn it!

54:36 The most frightening scene in the film.
"I love you Chunk" - yes Brad, it tears me up too. Lovely commentary guys, thanks.
I can't sync this up with my laserdisc because there's a side change.
I remember going to this as a child thinking I was going to see Ghoulies , this was better.
Great commentary, Great Movie.
do you take requests?

Im a former American football player. Rudy is iconic for football fans and catholics
The movie is more fiction than anything. His older brother and the black guy , didn't even exist.
I love this movie.
Does anyone remember Data's self inflating jacket... Never to be seen again?
Do Ferris Buellers Day Off
This movie typifies kid's excitement for adventure and fantasy, just before they discover sex.
Sooooo disappointed you didn’t start with “hey you guys” rather than “hello everyone” as usual!!
Do Gremlins 2 - The New Batch
Gremlins 2 is so underrated
@@dannycruz5446 Definitely & unfairly bashed. I've always liked it 👍
I believe Oliver did a commentary on it way back in the day.
It would have either been a very tricky golf course, or they'd need to do some serious levelling out - it looks pretty hilly around there.
It’s my mums favourite piece
"It all starts here!"
Explorers retrospective/commentary when?
I wonder if we will ever see an explorers director's cut release

It's season 2 mate..
Come on Oliver Season 2 👽👻💙:)
Oliver, what has happened to all your commentaries? I can't find them anywhere.
The podcast specials without video you mean? If I go to his channel and search for "commentary" I find over 60 of them, so they're still there.
think they should reboot this movie loved it as a kid
1:11:47 For the rest of the film we see Mikey with only one hand.

Same with me! I was a teenager before I appreciated it.
I'm calling the police.
@@jacobturnerart I still can't stand it 😀 I always enjoy Oliver's commentaries though.
I thought I was the only one. I was 14 when it came out, and I've never really understood the love for this movie..
Please do a retrospective and review of Titanic 1997.
It's My Birthday on Tuesday and I am going to be Age 27 Oliver ok
Goonies rule.
