That's Exactly Why Led Zeppelin & Black Sabbath Are Known As "The Founding Fathers" Of Hard Rock/Metal Music & They Would Influence So Many Bands To Follow After Them.
"No Quarter" is an old English term meaning "no mercy." Eg; soldiers slaughtered a village, therefore they "gave no quarter." I know, it doesn't make sense, but that was old English.
@@jimbenson3926 - Yes, that is what "Quarters" means. "No Quarter" means no mercy. It's not an American term, it's an old English term. Some British still use it to this day.
"No Quarter" means "take no prisoners/allow no surrender/no mercy". There are a few competing theories as to what it means. Regarding the prisoners part the one mentioning "quartering" people is relevant, i.e. don't house any prisoners just kill them. Another theory is that "quarter" refers to an agreement thus referring to the no surrender. A third theory is that "quarter" refers to the ransom of a captured officer was a quarter of their pay.
That one is good and some of the P&P ones live as well. But the CDay 2007 No Quarter is the best rock song performance I have ever seen. It is memorizing, even for Led Zeppelin. Great concert start to finish.
Yes, these lyrics take more of a fantasy aspect; most likely from Lord Of The Rings. The "winds of Thor" don't reference the god of thunder, but instead Mount Thor, a real mountain range in Canada. In the Lord Of The Rings, the group of good guys were temporarily trapped on a mountain range where they faced a blizzard and avalanches of rocks (the snow falls hard and don't you know and the snow drives back the foot that's slow). To ask no quarter means telling your enemy to take their best shot. To give no quarter means you will give no mercy.
Any zeppelin is a good day the live msg version will give you chills zeppelins inspiration was mythological and the lord of the rings viking, Norse men ect...
Physical Graffiti is my favorite Led Zeppelin album for all the diversity and creativity that it had, the production was epic! As well as the proficiency of the musicianship which the band displayed on this double album is just legendary…

Hey Bizmatik. I just think this 🎧 song is haunting. Also along with what you said bro, it’s a unique song, just like the three you mentioned. Rock on brother!!¡
Hey Biz - the term "no quarter" means you have no shelter, there's no room at the inn. Quarters can mean living space, or a place to sleep for the night. So this poor group has a mission to get important information to someone somewhere, but the winds of Thor are blowing cold, and they might die. Cool song.
Andrea Rodriguez just reminded me: if you dig this tune, you must listen to Pink Floyd’s ‘Echoes’, live in Pompeii, and if you do it, you MUST do Parts 1 AND 2. Doin Part 1 alone is literally playing half a bloody song. Drives me batshit when folks do that. Plus, some of the most legendary, wicked bits of that tune are at the end of part 1, where it turns into part 2.
"No Quarter" means that a fight will be to the death... Take no prisoners. It's common to read or hear the phrase "No quarter was asked, and none given" in tales of fierce battles. Wikipedia mentions that pirates used a black flag to indicate that they would "give quarter" if the victims would surrender promptly, since they wanted to keep the captured ships, and their own, in good condition... "No Quarter" would be bad business...
