The cough and chatter at the end was left in to let everyone else know that it was recorded in one live take in the studio. No layering. Kinda like a “yeah. That’s right. We just did that. Eat your hearts out.”
This is a remake of an old blues/gospel song, Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed by Blind Willie Johnson in 1927. Of course Zeppelin took that 3 minute song and made it into their longest studio track at over 11 minutes. I love Jimmy’s slide on this. The whole band is in sync. Epic stuff.
Need to check out the 70's J Geils rabbit hole!Musta got lost,Whammer jammer, look at the purse ect..Criminally underrated band that should be in the hall of fame!😎🎶🎤🎸
People didn't complain about religiosity back in Zeppelin's day. That's a modern cancel culture thing. Zep was just paying homage to their blues heroes and taking it to another sonic level, which is why it still sounds fresh four decades later.
Told you, Biz! Physical Graffiti loaded! “In My Time of Dying” is straight thunder. Watch it live to really appreciate Jimmy’s slide here. AMAZING! Dude, “Trampled Underfoot”, “Wanton Song”, just groovin’. “In The Light”, “Down By The Seaside”, “Bron-y-aur”, put on the headphones, close your eyes and drift away. Beautiful. AND “Kashmir”? They are unrivaled. Then and now.
🤦♀️Holy crap!! I wasn't expecting this one tonight and I gotta get to bed dang it!!😖 BUT I'll be back tomorrow to rewatch (and actually pay attention this time!! lol!!😜) I have SO MUCH to say about it!! Awesome surprise tonight and holy hell I LOVE this one!!😍 From what I could see, or rather.... from what I caught (in between brushing my teeth and getting my jammies on!! lol!!).... the look on your face as you were trying to process that intro was priceless!! Be back to rewatch tomorrow.😉 I guess now that ur back in action, I gotta remember to be ready for ya at 8pm sharp again!!🙃😂🤣 So great having you back Biz.... you rock!!😎❤
To me, it was Jimmy Page and Bonzo who totally drove this song. That is just some staggeringly astonishing drumming. And he shows such discipline when he needs to and then he knows how to just totally go off and then bring it right back. And he plays so hard, it's a pleasure to listen to.
in 1991 I moved to 19th and Michigan in Santa Monica, California...3 blocks away from the greatest black Baptist church on the West Coast and let me tell you, brother...they did this song up on Sundays! Led Zeppelin's skin was white...everything else was black
As others have mentioned, this song is a reworking of a song by Blind Willie Johnson. You did pick up that this song is a jam; they didn't have an ending written when they recorded it, so the coughing by Bonzo at the end was left in. They liked to occasionally leave the mistakes so the listener could feel like they were there in the studio with them when it was recorded.
😂🤣😂 Yup, everybody's a Led Head!! And agreed.... Jimmy Page IS an alien!!😜 The level of skill and talent he had on guitar AND in the studio production and engineering of their tracks is otherworldly!! You NAILED IT Margie!!👏👏👏😎
In their heyday the critics hated Zeppelin, I don't remember it being played on the radio much but we all had albums and 8 tracks. So our was played amongst friends. It was just Rock n Roll it didn't have any religious connotations.
This song is a great reminder of why you'll get so many different 'favorites' from this album. I'm sure this one and Kashmir will compete for the top spot, yet it's amazing how vastly different they were composed, arranged and recorded. Kashmir started with phrasing and drums... then got built layer after layer, including JPJ composing an arrangement for an Afghani six piece orchestra, until they created a masterpiece of composition and emotion. In My Time Of Dying was basically charted out and rehearsed a few times and then just captured after a few takes with the four guys jamming it out together... and it's just as great. It's incredible that one band could be that good at both ends of the spectrum... so I, for one, cannot possibly pick a favorite song from this album. The only comparison I could make is if you had a doctor who could go into a lab and spend weeks breaking down a genome and building DNA strands, and then go straight to the OR and perform precision brain surgery in real time without missing a beat.
So I wasn’t planning on commenting because I’m so late to this, but you had to go and mention Sons of Anarchy and here I am!!! Haha I totally agree that this is something you might hear playing in the background on that show!!! I really miss that show!!! Haha And since I’m commenting I’ll go ahead and say great reaction 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 You know I really appreciate your Led Zeppelin Journey!!!! I can’t wait for your “album ranking” video once we get to the end of the journey!!! But it’s been an amazing ride so far!!! Thanks fam!!! 💞
I love Bob Dylan's really stripped down version of this as well. But yeah, I really don't think you can go wrong with any song on this entire double album. I love how they are all different in their own way and they're all kind of mind-blowing in their own way.
This is basically a cover of Blind Willy Johnson’s “ Jesus make up my dying bed” Gospel song from the 1920’s I believe….. Zeppelin’s homage to Old man Willy …. Also note that “Nobody’s Fault but Mine” great song off their Presence album is again… Blind Willy original……. Influence over and over… one thing Zep knew was American Roots Blues …. They were just the best at electrifying the blues….
Definitely not a cover.... just an incredible homage to another one of Zep's idols. Each one of the guys in Zep were inspired by SO many different artists from many genres and era's.... I will never think of any Zeppelin song that they have been accused of "stealing" from others as anything more than epic homages! In essence, a new generation honoring their heros!! Thanks for not saying they "stole" this one like so many people have a nasty habit of doing. Kudos to you!!🤗😎
I love the way Page puts a phaser on everything on this record. This song, The Rover, Kashmir etc. In his hands it just created a powerful, trippy sound, like sounds whooshing across the soundscape. That dude was a flat out rock composing, recording genius man.
The album is a double LP, their only double LP. 4 sides of songs, some that had been around for years but never got around to finishing them. To me this is their Magnum Opus, their finest hour and "In My Time Of Dying" is their best song on the whole LP. Bonzo's drumming is so fierce as to render me unconscious. Page's almost possessed fret playing on the slide and Plant's tremendous vocals are each in rare form. JPJ laying down his usual solid, steady basslines. Bow down to the greatest hard rock band of all time.
My favorite Zeppelin song! That groove is so sick and that kick drum during the jamming parts sounds so sweet I could cry. There's nothing about this song that I don't love. I listen to it every day of my life and it still makes my heart race. I'm so glad you liked it!
This is a old gospel song that zeppelin put the Led into it and made it super Heavy! One of my personal top Zeppelin songs!! The live version from the Royal Albert Hall 1975 concert will blow you away! You should do a reaction to that!
It's a redo of an old Gospel song I believe. This song was pretty much a hidden gem. It was NEVER played on the radio and to be fair, I pretty much skipped past it for more than a decade until I got a job that I could bring my music to work with me and out of laziness would play entire cds. Then it quickly became maybe my favorite Zeppelin song for many years. Still a top 3-5 depending on the day. For me, it was like discovering a brand new Zeppelin song. You really need to sample the 1975 live version of this song and Trampled Under Foot. Both are amazing live.
I read that this song has no outtakes or overdrive. It was live in the studio straight through. The drum sound magnificent. I was eight years old when I first heard this song. I’m now 60 unbelievable song beautiful hard kick ass love love your videos.
They will never be another Zeppelin just 10 years and they reshape the whole genre of rock ,blues, jazz and whatever they felt like playing at that moment they had their foot in just like you said Mr bismatic love your show dog
You REALLY need to go back and listen to the ENTIRE track to the very end, my man! It gets even MORE epic, with a pleasant little surprise to finish it off. You won't be disappointed.
If I'm not mistaken the song come from an old religious chant that used to be sung while they were building the railroads and roads of America.. also John Paul Jones says the bass drum was ran through the bass amp while they were recording the song kickstand you get I do not exactly know how to say it but you can look it up and it should be out there somewhere. How exactly they got that sound out of the drum kit. The things this song is when I was a kid when it came out we had the Sansui turned on full blast when that first drum hit it about blew all your hair off. Everyone I know scared the crap out of them the first time they heard the song.
This, and Since I've Been Loving You are, in my opinion, the 2 greatest songs in Led Zeppelin's catalog. It's incredible to think that Stairway to Heaven, considered the most iconic of all rock songs, barely cracks the Top 5 Zeppelin tunes (I would put Kashmir at #3 and When the Levee Breaks at #4).
Hello Bizmatic, I've got a few new artists for you to add to your list, if interested. "America - Ventura Highway (1975) LIVE" this American rock band has an extensive collection of popular songs. and "Tony Orlando & Dawn - Tie a Yellow Ribbon (1973)" this song was about prisoners being released from prison being welcomed home. But in November 1979 the Iran Hostage Crisis happened and Penne Laingen 82, wife of US hostage Bruce Laingen 92, transformed it's meaning 52 Americans in the US Embassy in Tehran were taken hostage by Iranian students and were held for 444 days. And finally, "Harry Nilsson - Mr. Richland's Favorite Song/ One" (1971) (1/7)" Harry was Booed at a young age, when he first performed for an audience which frightened him so much, that it stuck with him. Which made him never perform a live concert again. But the Beatles recognized his genus and helped to bring him to the masses. A Big Thank you to the Beatles. I hope you give these a listen, I think you will enjoy them. Have a good day Biz~Take care
It's hilarious how this was played all over my neighborhood. Everybody had the badass Pioneer and the Alpine Stereo in your car and it was amped power boosted. And this song would just scream out the windows man what a good time to grow up. The radio didn't play a lot of these long songs so that's how people in those days found out was some crazy son-of-a-b**** blaring their stereo all over the neighborhood was the best ever.
I tell everybody that listen to zeppelin don’t forget to listen all the way to the end not all songs, but a lot of songs listened all the way to the end things you don’t hear on the radio. Also slide guitar.
So the content may be religious and you might feel a way about that, but it’s back to Leds roots of taking gospel or early black blues and bring them into rock and roll. This is one of my favorite songs. I’m a Christian so I’m familiar with all the imagery like Peter at the gate with his big book of names and making him check yours is there. Really is like bargaining with God when you KNOW your time is up and you feel guilty. ‘Surely I didn’t do no harm.’ And ‘I must have done somebody some good.’ I really like the first part ‘if my wings should fail me, Jesus please meet me with another pair.’ Because you know you aren’t good enough on your own and need forgiveness. Besides the deep meaning, the jam is historically awesome.
This just ONE of the monsters on this album. Please , dear God please , do Trampled Underfoot. You will experience the 'perfect' rock song. Pure POWER!!💥💥 I promise.
Anything on this album will make me get up . But my fav is Kashmir. Saw Diddy early one morning rap with this. And Jimmy playing behind him. For the movie Godzilla. I was working out and people at the gym thought I was having a seizure or I hurt myself….. Way too good to be quiet about it.
Biz - I've been away but back now and I'm so glad you've done some more Led Zeppelin! This song is actually traditional - based on several early gospel songs from the early 1900s - Blind Willie Johnson (Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed link - ua-cam.com/video/t5HaHVKRouo/v-deo.html) for one as well as Bob Dylan's version (link ua-cam.com/video/vWM6zODqBgk/v-deo.html) THIS IS EVEN BETTER LIVE!! How they weave in an out of the various riffs - so good!! You know live is so different from the studio stuff. Maybe you'll check out a live version - Earls Court from 5/24/1975 is fabulous🔥🔥. Here's the link - hope you'll react to it 😁
LZ took one genre and created a new one. They lifted whole songs from African American blues and rolled right into metal. I, personally, love this and appreciate the art of transformation. The original creators/artists could have used more credit, for sure.
If you want a truly unique experience even within the realm of LZ, check this one out live at Earls Court! I promise it will inspire your most unique reaction!!
Bro....Zeppelin was so good so respected by us...the kids who bought their albums....we did not give a fuck what the media or our parents or the Rolling Stone magazine critics. Zeppelin was our band. We knew it was the best in the world. And if Plant wanted to talk about fucking young LA trollops and Jesus and asenscion to heaven on the same album. So be it. Jimmy Page wore a WWll Nazi SS outfit on stage 1977 tour. Nobody said a word. Zeppelin is where Rock peaked.
The cough and chatter at the end was left in to let everyone else know that it was recorded in one live take in the studio. No layering. Kinda like a “yeah. That’s right. We just did that. Eat your hearts out.”
Yeah this is back when the MUSICIANS actually had to have talent, and this group had the most.
Exactly right....just adds to the epicness of the track.
Exactly!
Epic stuff.
So many of Led Zeppelin songs is a remake of a gospel or blues song.
I remember there were reviews where people mentioned it was unusual for Zeppelin to reference Jesus, but fans knew they had deep blues roots...
@@neillenet291 And thank goodness they did
They are magnificent...simply magic!
@@xytrius8194 yep...made those songs sound epic!
In my top 3 LZ songs of all timeThe interplay between Bonham and Page is transcendent. Bass line is rock solid and the vocals are immaculate.
I was 10 years old 1975 this song blaring out of every car window San Diego, California
This is an album that you can cover ALL the songs and find not a bad lick. Wanton Song, Custard Pie, Trampled Underfoot.... never get old.
Need to check out the 70's J Geils rabbit hole!Musta got lost,Whammer jammer, look at the purse ect..Criminally underrated band that should be in the hall of fame!😎🎶🎤🎸
This whole album is fabulous!
yes sir it is all killer and no filler front to back
I pretty much agree. But some of the filler songs like “black country woman”, “night flight” and “down by the seaside” I can do without
People didn't complain about religiosity back in Zeppelin's day. That's a modern cancel culture thing. Zep was just paying homage to their blues heroes and taking it to another sonic level, which is why it still sounds fresh four decades later.
Bonham's foot getting a workout in on this bad boy. Great song. Achilles Last Stand from their Presence album is another must listen.
Yes!
Epic track. The 1975 live version from Earl's Court is spectacular.
Yes!!!
The tone change when he kicks into the solos is so bad ass
Oh hell yeah Bizmatik!! Thank you once again for your Zeppelin reactions. This song 🎵 is just kick ass bro! Rock on!!¡
🙌🏿🙌🏿🤘🏿🤘🏿
Led Zeppelins Finest Hour... Bet you The Stank Faces the Producers had in the studio... They knew they were seeing something transcendal
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.....back in the f'n day it was called freedom of f'n speech! Thank You Jesus!
Told you, Biz! Physical Graffiti loaded! “In My Time of Dying” is straight thunder. Watch it live to really appreciate Jimmy’s slide here. AMAZING! This album might be the best album of all-time. Incredible music that never gets old. Bonzo and Page and JPJ are at the top of their game.

Acid Blues with the Bonzo crunch. Who could ask for anything better.

Zep IV, HOTH and PG taken together was just the deepest well of ROCK GROOVE ever recorded. It’s just mind blowing what that band accomplished.

I believe it is, or comes from a old slavery song, growing up the band loved the American blues.
NEAJ! PAGE!

Jimmy Page is a genius, I wonder how the hell he got in this guitar style
