My brother introduced me to Led Zeppelin, and John Bonham the day Physical Graffiti came out on February 24th, 1975. My brother came in and hooked up a dual headphone jack, and said "You're going to remember this day for the rest of your life." I was 8 years old. We listened to all 4 sides, and I was as into the albums packaging as I was the music.
H.R.was right. My life was changed that day. FOREVER.
He bought us tickets to the 1980 "Zeppelin into the 80s Part 1" tour stop at Buffalo's Memorial Auditorium. On September 26th,1980, I showed my Mom the huge, full-page ad in the Courier Express. Then I went to the obituaries, and to my utter horror, saw the headline "John Bonham, Led Zeppelin drummer found dead at 32."
I remember that like it was yesterday, and every time I think about it, I take a long deep sigh.
RIP, Bonzo.

Saw Zep live 8 times starting in 1972. The 8th time was Dec 10, 2007 at the reunion concert in London. I was one of 9,000 people selected to buy “up to” 2 tix for the concert. It was like winning the lottery. Jason sat in for his dad for the almost 3 hour show. It was incredible.

I saw Zeppelin 8 times from 1970-1977.
The 2007 recorded version of "Kashmir" is the best sounding live version in existence. It reflects the power and the Glory that I experienced in Ft. Worth, on the night of May 22, 1977.
If Zeppelin had continued after 1980, they would have been performing as a LZ tribute band. The creative force that was LZ went to the grave with John Bonham.
It took me many years to come to that realization. But now, I know fully well, that John Bonham was Led Zeppelin's Biggest Fan. The very Heart & Soul of Led Zeppelin.

I made a playlist of Led Zeppelin songs to listen to when I take my daily two hour walk. Half of this playlist is just Bonham's drum track. He transmits a force, a power so strong, it's fascinating!

If you've never heard it listen to Down By The Seaside off of Physical Graffiti it shows his immense feel and love of playing to the music and song. I think he followed in the path of many great swing drummers and early recorded drummers like Hal Blaine etc. Rain Song off of Houses of the Holy with Bonham playing the brushes on the snare at the beginning shows his versatility. He knew how not to over play but then he knew when to kick it in. The only big ego schmuck in this was Ginger Baker. Bonham had swing in spades!!!!

@@anthonybrewer3413 Very few with the same feel and how many drummers would over play it? Bonzo's feel and sense of time is what is hard to duplicate.
Baker a good drummer. However to say that Bonham was ‘strictly average’ (which he did in another interview not showed here) and that he couldn’t swing, is just plain ridiculous. Bonham had swing in spaces. In fact it’s his feel and groove (as well as power) that he just had within him, that gives him that distinct sound.
For me, it's Dazed and Confused...just all over the map, powerful...that blippity fill at the end of Pages solo, right before going back to the original, opening riff...still gives me the chills.
As good as the album version is. The early live versions are even better. Ever listened to this one he did at the BBC in '69?
@@marktaylor6491 Yes Mark, I have...and even that gives me chills...the power of that band in their early stage was breathtaking...they were one of those bands, for me, that blew away the "flower power" genre like a chainsaw in a daisy garden.

Favorite Bonzo moment: Watching "The Ocean" live (1973)..... Bonzo singing harmony in falsetto. At that moment, I really had seen it all.

Baker thinks being a jazz guy first, that he was the originator - he didn't like the lack of perceived recognition. Even though he was already hugely respected in the music community.

People talk about Good Times Bad Times and When The Levee Breaks all the time.... But, listen to his incredibly understated, yet absolutely perfect drumming on Kashmir, where the band revolves around the drums in different time signatures. Bonham was a titan. One of a kind.

My all time favorite Bonzo groove is Fool in the rain. Absolute master class. Of course the opening of good times, bad times where he starts inserting triplets on the bass drum from almost the beginning... like this is the world's introduction to John Bohnam. Then there's the legendary earth shattering stomping groove that is When the levee breaks. And don't get me started on his odd time signature mastery. The man was a true genius and is and will always be a legend on the kit. R.I.P. Bonzo. May your memory live on forever.
Zep was so far up in the rock god heavens, that no one drummer could have replaced him. Unlike other bands that have a multitude of replacement revolving-door musicians, Zep was not that kind of band. Imagine replacing Mick in the Stones, or Keith? Even Ronnie Woods took decades to become a full-share member of the band. That is how good Zep was and will always be, even young kids still love their music
I think I'd have to go with fool in the rain if I were to pick Bonzo's best drumming. When i heard Bonzo Isolated on that song I was blown away.

Was introduced to Zepp by a new class mate in 1974 being 11 years old at the time playing guitar in my fathers accordion folk music band I was totally floored with the energy of Bonham and the band. Led Zeppelin is why I have continued to be in to music and played in band and studios all over and still are whithout Zepp I would have had a very differient life experience with a boring 9 to 5 job so all in all thank you for everything.
Every beat , fill, roll note the man ever played or recorded is Astronomical!
My favorite is "The Wanton Song" from "Physical Graffiti" - how the snare lands between the break in Page's riff. Also when they come out of the bridge section and he holds back on the bass drum 16ths pattern when you think it's coming. Can't explain it - you have to listen to it.

Almost at the end of track the wanton song, John Bonham dose this thing on his snare drum I don’t know the technical term, but it’s quite simple but brilliant, and only John Bonham could do it like that, you just know it’s Bonham when you hear it .

John Bonham is so incredibly amazing it’s hard to put into words. He had a groove as wide as the Grand Canyon, his triplet fills with the bass drum were astounding. Led Zeppelin certainly did the right thing by disbanding after his untimely death. He was the heart and soul of that band.
Individually, all four were the heart and soul of the band and equally indispensable. JPJ, the least likely to earn the distinction based on his personality, clearly was, though many 'fans' never realized what he did - usually out of the spotlight and rarely discussed.
High Castle, beautifully said. And perhaps the most tragic premature death in rock history. Four people who love each other. Only 32 years old. Devastating.
Very few recorded drummers had the magic air around them. Certain nuances, Bonhams foot pedals, creaky and clear were signature like his tunings, and delicacies they put on his snare drum like, teabags.
Everyone talks about his Bass drum, while I really like his ride hand. Whether it’s on the high-hats, the ride cymbal, or even when he rides on the crash!
That is where he feels the groove! Then with the bass drum and snare drum, he plays around that groove!
as a drummer myself, i think that constant emphasis on his kick is because what he did with it, is just literally physically impossible to ever be emulated at his level. His right foot alone was a virtuoso! When you hear the live stuff it's got so many instances where he makes it sound as if he's got a double kick. To be able to play triplet and quadruplet and quintuplet rudiments at 32nd note speed using a quick one-footed double, sometimes triplet, in combination with the snare and toms in any pattern imaginable is already on a stratospheric level..but then you gotta factorr in the difficulty of the perfectly placed accents required to get those sounds with just one kick pedal and to top it off, the sheer powerful sound he does it with and the stamina to do it f*ckin drunk over the course of a 3 hour show, including your own solo thats at least 15+ minutes = "how the fuuuuuuck is that physically possible?" and the chances of anyone ever coming along with the ability to play those licks matching every single one of those Bonham-cemented specifications...maybe somewhere in the neighborhood of another quarterback matching Brady's 7 Superbowls? ...nah it's gotta be even less than that lol
@@GreatCornH0Li0 Bonham's kick drum is overrated. It's innovative and probably the most featured kick drum of all-time, but the technique and technical skill is vastly overrated. There's plenty of drummers who can play single foot triplets like him. That's not what made his right foot special. What made his right foot special was the dynamics, as well as the musicality. Within is overall greasy field, as well as his ability to accent, ghost and standardly play the kick drum is what made his kick sound so great..
Was he fast? Yes. Fastest ever? No. But his kick drum work was so featured, that it grabbed your attention, and the musicality of his bass drum work is what made him special, not his speed. Listen to the live performance of Celebration Day in 73. He plays those fast bass drum triplets. But REALLY listen to the drums, hi hat and tempo. Bonham's kick drum in the song is precise. Different notes are louder than others. Bonham had such dynamic control of each limb that he could musically emphasis different portion of his drum bit. Whether it was a break beat snare rhythm, an obnoxiously quiet ghost note on the snare...the breathing organic pulse of his hi hat work, or the accented kick on the 1 to roll into a more gentle triplet on the kick, he emphasized everything he did. But the fast double kicks? Not the fastest ever and not impressive technically by today's standards. It's the way he featured them, placed them, and incooperated them that made him special.
Bonham was a wizard. A legit technical pro. There were more skilled drummers then, technically, and there are a lot more skilled drummers now. But anyone who focuses on Bonham's technical skill misses his drumming. It's the decision making, the dynamics, the feel, the time feel and how he got each cymbal, snare drum and kick drum to flow like a piano. He played the drums like a musical instrument. His combination of pulse, dynamics, control, decision making, and general musicality is what made him truly great and what separates him from today.
There's no reason to be impressed. The man just SOUNDED so much better than any drummer ever

Baker was a good drummer. However to say that Bonham couldn’t swing is just plan ridiculous. Bonham gave Zeppelin a great groove and lilt like feel, whilst also giving them the momentous rock feel of a
fright train. Plus Moon could swing. My Generation (recorded version) has a swing ride pattern, if you listen to Live At Leeds and Live At Hull everything he plays is so musically appropriate and Moon just instinctively knew what to play to compliment - enhance and add to the music he was playing and reacting to. So if there was a musical moment where he needed to make it swing he could make it swing. Moon was heavily influenced by Gene Krupa and you can see/ hear that within his playing and showmanship and many jazz drummers were impressed with Moons improvisational abilities and innovation.
“My Generation” doesn’t swing at all. It’s a straight 4/4. Moon couldn’t swing to save his life.
Bonham could and did.

Levon - soulful voice - feels every word he sings to his core! I had to musically mature to understand artists like The Band, Bob Seger, Springsteen, Little Feat etc. These are bands / artists with deep soul and subtle arrangements, true chemistry and interplay among musicians. The words matter, the music is saturated in rock and roll history and roots! The Band takes me out of this too frenetic modern day and brings me to a more spiritual, more dignified place - Levon Helm was a beloved artist, he was a musicians musician! Not easy to drum, let alone sing, and ALL at the same time....brilliant🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶!

I love Zeppelin even more for disbanding when JB passed away. They paid him the ultimate respect and he will remain forever as he was, his art untainted and in the annals of greatness forever. Legendary 🥁🎶
My favourite is the often maligned The Crunge. A bizarre funky groove in 5/4? That speaks volumes on his versatility. BTW, hearing you pronounce Carmine Appice's name hurt my soul a little.

I'm not a Led Zepplin fan, however I am a fan of their rhythm section. Bonham and John Paul Jones were the true stars of that show.

Wanton Song, almost 50 years ago, was phenomenal groove and power, but never overshadowed the others.
Besides every other quality that you can point to, the reason Bonham was the best was that he had the *perfect* snare sound.
Kudos to Tommy Lee every single word he said was about John Bonham and his son at the end not one word about Tommy Lee totally giving it up what a cool cat the real deal

I always found it odd that Baker would carry out about being a jazz drummer and how Cream was a jazz band. Baker/Cream are high on numerous lists of the best rock drummers/rock bands, but he and they will NEVER be mentioned as even a competent jazz drummer/jazz band. The only thing about Baker that was greater than his talent was his ego and it was undeserved.

Led zeppelin were the first band to have the drums and bass lineup with vocals and guitar
good times bad times. first track of first album. drum style was killer and he just had it all. drive, groove, soft or loud and melodic all in his bag.
They got it right the first time, all of them. No better opener from any other band... it was like a revelation - how could you not become a Zep freak for life, hearing this... I was 11 when I first heard it, in 1971 .. 🥳

Really respect Carmine Appice🙏 Some great drummers with different journey’s and personalities, the good ones weave some of themselves to serve and be present in their music. Be interested to hear or read Mitch Mitchell’s comment on JB.
Yeah, Good Times Bad Times has the foot ruffs... Moby Dick has the hands solo... Since I've Been Loving You has the squeaky pedal... When The Levee Breaks has that ungodly and titanic sound AND an incredible groove... The Crunge almost has no time signature... Kashmir is the second ungodly and titanic one of course. But have you listened closely to Bonham on Achilles Last Stand? TIght beyond tight and propulsive to the max with a snare roll at 1:19 that sounds like he's ripping sandpaper.
That is very well spoken and I agree with it all. In fact....it could have been me saying it! I was 16 when I placed the tone arm needle of my crappy little stereo down on the vinyl album in March of 1969, having my socks completely blown off, by not only the sonic ambience of the recording, but Bonham's foot, his clever beat in GTBT, Page's cool riffery, Plant's stratospheric vocals, and Jonesy's soulful bass work. I'm so glad you mentioned Achilles....it was Page's favorite song and Bonzo is absolutely on fire during all ten plus minutes of this masterpiece.....galloping along like a full posse of rhythmic warriors!

It's sad that the day before he died he was insecure about his drumming confessing to Robert Plant that he "wasn't the best" anymore. This self-imposed burden and the stress of being separated from his family for yet another tour (he was burned out with tours and being a superstar) caused him to try drinking it away and the world lost him.
Love every story possible, Makes you that much closer to him.
D'yer Mak'er made a Zeppelin fan. Even though Bonzo didn't like it, lol. I loved looking at Zeppelin posters, for the most part, it has the Vista Lite kit. He had the most awsome kit. Drums, gong, tympani.
I started playing drums 🥁 when I was 5 , My Dad and my two uncles all played guitar 🎸 I started taking lessons about 8 but it was when I first heard houses of the holy. I was hooked I went threw my uncles records and found zeppelin one and two. I found the drummer I wanted to play like ! amazing triplets heavy on the foot just making his presence known on each song. Definitely not Charlie watts or ringo. There style works for what they were doing with there band kieth moon was all over the place. John was ready steady go. I owe my experience and the pleasure I got playing because I discovered the greatest drummer and style of play that touched my soul. Peace ✌
The subtlety of I'm gonna crawl
I used to love the Zep. Then got over it. But never got over Bonzo. If he was alive today I'd go see him before a Zeppelin reunion without him, even if he was in a marching band. There is something remarkably inimitable about his drumming, it lives and breathes all by itself. Ever hear those mixes of Whole lotta love without him ? Well, It sucks. I subscribe to the Bonzoleum channel on YT, that bloke really understands all the finer features of Bonzo-isms.
Hmm, I've loved Zep since I was a teen (many moons ago). I will never "get over" them.

I don't recall having a "never get over" moment when I really liked them and learned how to play their songs (even), "when the levee breaks" I could handle, maybe "how many more times", "four sticks " once in a blue moon. It just slipped down on my regular listening, when I went back, just didn't do it for me. BUt Bonzo still rocks.

I was heading down to Van Nuys, Ca around 1981 (I think) and listening to Led Zeppelin (physical graffiti, I think) on my brothers Kraco stereo in his Jeep CJ-5. Man, life was good. I kept listening to that cassete over and over. One of the tunes that I remember vividly was Carouselambra. Later, I took up the drums myself, and never got good but enjoy playing still. But, the first time I heard Good times, Bad times I was just amazed. I didn't know those kinds of feels and sounds could be made on the drums. John Bonham ✌
Guess you don't remember it too vividly since Carouselambra in on "In Through the Out Door". 😉 But yeah there are many Zep songs and/or albums that remind me of specific times and places. Like driving up the snow covered mountain pass to Lake Tahoe listening to Achilles Last Stand.
@@coinraker6497 Yep 🙂 my memory sucks...used to have a memory like an elephant. You talking about Tahoe reminded me of a ski trip I took to Mamoth with a high school buddy. We listened to the Beach Boys the whole way there and back....😟...still don't like those guys.

What hasn't been said about John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham!
Has to be the king of rock drumming. John actually loved many of best jazz drummers of the passed and of his time- Rich, Kupra, Jimmie Vincent (basically created heavy drumming), he also incorporated into his solos, a certain style created by John Morello, and of course a drummer that has also left us but a drum master bar none- Hud Jahnsen. Hopefully those that read my comment do take the time and watch Vincent, Morello, and Jahnsen; through watching and hearing these masters and innovators that influenced John Bonzo Bonham to be the master drummer he became and still is, though sadly R.I.P.

I seen LZ 2 times at MSG in NYC I believe 75 and 77 and what most sticks out is the opening song for each concert. Rock n Roll was the song. Bonham would bang the crap out of the symbols at the start and bang the art of Zeppelin played on for two and a half hours. My best memories of my concert goings.
One of my top most favorite Bonham moments is listening to his playing during the last few minutes of 'Dazed And Confused' live in Vienna, 1973. It's just mind blowing the stamina and power/energy that he had and it shows in everything he played....but in particular, this live version of 'Dazed' - throughout the entire song, but especially toward the end of it.

Agreed. It doesn’t matter how good the singer or guitar player is; if the drummer sucks, the band will suck.
It's bending the time that creates the tension, which is what a great drummer does. Think of Bruford on Yes' 4th & 5th albums.
Carmine Appice who played with Vanilla Fudge, Ozzie Osbourne, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Cactus. Was a big influence on John Bonham.

Alls I can say is Nobody, I MEAN NOBODY moved around the kit like him. I mean it was like watching a perfectly choreographed dance. He was so fluid, & fast, yet he had a very fine touch, devastating natural power, blinding speed, & looked bloody fantastic moving around his kit! Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer in terms of God given talent, but Bonham was born to drum. Rich was also fluid around the kit, had the fastest single stroke rolls, & power, but had a hunched over posture which, to me, didn't look as good & proper as Bonzo's great form.
