Tool honored Led Zeppelin with their cover. One thing that people don't often mention about Led Zeppelin is why those songs and albums sound as good as they do. When I was a kid I drove this big ass 1989 Buick Regal that had no stereo, so I wired a boom box up to the power from the cigarette lighter. I used to drive around and listen to this song, and it was then and is now the only piece of music that while listening to it I actually feel like I'm stoned when completely sober. It did that playing through a cassette tape on a boom box wired in to a cigarette lighter on an 89 Buick Regal. Amazing.
Achilles Last Stand is one of their most monolithic tracks. It features what is easily the greatest rock drum track ever recorded. Lyrically it is another very poetic, enigmatic example of Zeppelin firing on all cylinders. I think they were drawing an analogy between the life of Achilles, the untouchable warrior who met his end in the Trojan war and their own sudden rise to fame, success and unexpected tragedies. Robert lost his son to a rare disease and just before recording 'Prescence', their 8th studio release. He and his family were in a car accident and so he delivered tbe vocal tracks from a wheelchair. Prescence is a great, underrated album, I think Bonzo's drumming was as great as it ever got on every single song.

Jimmy Page did not want to be constrained by the limitations of singles which needed to be no more than 3 minutes to get radio play (at the time). You are correct that LZ was not singles driven. They may not have had any #1 singles but they had six #1 albums on Billboard and seven #1 albums in UK. They were the most iconic band of the 1970’s. Their strategy of being an album band was a trendsetter and strategically smart.
Led Zeppelin never wanted to release singles & didn't agree to it. The record companies released some singles & the Band were not happy! And there is only one version of No Quarter I want to listen to as it's so fabulous & that is Led Zeppelin! ♥️
This was from Led Zeppelin's 5th album in 1972 - 'Houses of the Holy'... Their self-titled album was their first in 1969... it was followed by 'Led Zeppelin II' in 1969... 'Led Zeppelin III' in 1970... and then, the big 4th record 'Led Zeppelin IV' or untitled 4th album in 1971. Led Zeppelin was the biggest band in the world when they released their 6th 1975 double album 'Physical graffiti'... They were sidelined when singer Robert Plant was seriously injured in a car accident in 1975. 7th album 'Presence' was released in 1976... it was done w/ Robert Plant in a wheelchair. It is the 'dark horse' Zeppelin album. 8th album 'In through the out door' in 1979 came after difficult time in Zeppelin's career, but was a huge hit. Unfortunately, John Bonham's death in 1980 ended Led Zeppelin. 9th album 'Coda' was released in 1982 comprised of tracks not released in their career. It's true... Led Zeppelin only had 1 top 40 chart hit single - "Whole lotta love" in 1969... That was because after 'Led Zeppelin III' in 1970, Led Zeppelin grew frustrated w/ the music press and the critical disdain from older music fans. They wanted to cater to their fans only and left out everyone who didn't give a damn... So, from 1971... Led Zeppelin refused to release any singles from their records... they refused to appear on TV... Only FM radio that had supported the band since 1969 could play their music & promote Led Zeppelin when they put out a new album (starting w/ "Led Zeppelin IV") and even though 'Stairway to Heaven' became a #1 song on demand in rock radio... it never made the charts because it was never released as a single. The message from Led Zeppelin was clear: If u want to hear the music ... you had to buy a Led Zeppelin album. If u want to see Led Zeppelin... you had to buy a concert ticket. It was a marketing ploy that worked... Led Zeppelin in the 70's sold 3-to-1 more concert tickets than The Rolling Stones... As a result, their manager Peter Grant demanded promoters that Led Zeppelin get 90% of the ticket sales (They were outraged, but they gave in to the demand) Their albums sold so well that even the biggest artists like The Carpenters, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees, Abba ... could not compete w/ them.
Yes. You are correct. Several rock bands of the 60's and 70's were not interested in making hits to get money or fame, like Led Zeppelin....YES....Pink Floyd....The Moody Blues....Genesis...King Crimson, they were interested in the art of music and placing it on the entire album without time restrictions or amount of songs on the albums. The record companies hated it and threatened to cut these bands, and did....but the albums were best sellers which forced many companies to stay with these bands however the bands broke away from many of these record companies and started their own Record Companies like the Beatles with Apple....and Led Zeppelin with Swan Song Records......and Yes with InsideOut....or Pink Floyd with Harvest Records. The bands broke away, started their own label and record companies for freedom of the art of making music on their terms.
It is so much harder to create a masterpiece than to copy it. As all true artists would agree. I think Tool wanted to show their fans where they got some inspiration. 👊🏽⚡️
Imagine a band that was hard rock with four virtuoso musicians that were also creative and loved to branch out. Page was obviously the genius behind this creation but without the other three, they would have never existed. It is impossible to single out any one of their brilliant tracks as being different because so many were different. Straight ahead blues rock; subtle acoustic folk rock and then songs like this. Far and away the best rock band of all time and I feel so blessed to have lived through their career.
You can now understand how Tool were inspired to cover this. And remember, this is four guys in the 1970s. Absolute innovators ahead of their time. Live in 73 at MSG is a must!!! Best band EVER. ❤ They only ever released albums, no singles because they pleased themselves and had the support of Atlantic Records to have complete artistic control. Legendary.
No Quarter means No Mercy. Robert Plant was a lover of J.R.R. Tolkien writer of Lord of the Rings. You should do the live version of this song from their 1973 MSG concert. It's longer and amazing.
If you think this version's better you should check out the live at MSG version - it literally is the one where the live version is better than the studio version in every way

"Houses of the Holy" (Mar 1973)
"Physical Graffiti" (Feb 1975)
"Presence" (Mar 1976)
"Song Remains the Same" (Oct 1976) live album from 1973 at Madison Square Garden (Songs thru "Houses of the Holy")
"In Through the Out Door" (Aug 1979)
This song takes you places.
Led II was the one fore me. I wore out 3 8-tracks while driving my 1972 Gremlin. Yes I am that old. Than you for keeping them alive.
I remember being blown away by this song in 1973.
Another great reactions! It was fun doing the live chat earlier! Really lifted my spirits! I'm going to send you a "you got it, my friend". I hope you use it someday!
The live version from TSRTS has the greatest live guitar solo ever recorded imo.
You are correct that LZ was not singles driven. They may not have had any #1 singles but they had six #1 albums on Billboard and seven #1 albums in UK. They were the most iconic band of the 1970’s.
Their strategy of being an album band was a trendsetter and strategically smart.
JRR Tolkien is all up in zeppelin lyrics, someone else I'm sure has mentioned. Ramble on etc....
Led Zeppelin never wanted to release singles & didn't agree to it. The record companies released some singles & the Band were not happy!
And there is only one version of No Quarter I want to listen to as it's so fabulous & that is Led Zeppelin! ♥️
Page on guitar,Plant on vocals and harmonica, Bonham on drums, and Jones on every other instrument. Jones is such an amazing talent!!
As a result, their manager Peter Grant demanded promoters that Led Zeppelin get 90% of the ticket sales (They were outraged, but they gave in to the demand)
Their albums sold so well that even the biggest artists like The Carpenters, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Bee Gees, Abba ... could not compete w/ them.
There’s so much atmosphere in this song you can almost choke on it.
The live performance in MSG 73 is out this world....
If you think this version's better you should check out the live at MSG version - it literally is the one where the live version is better than the studio version in every way
One of my top TOP fave Zepp songs ever. Close the door, put out the light and have your love there ✌
My absolute favorite Led Zeppelin track. 🔥❤️
Although I have MANY close seconds.
The power of Led Zeppelin took you there. ❤😂
Being such a huge Led Zeppelin fan since I was 10. I listen to most of the tool song and now I have to stop my ears from bleeding lol!!!
Led Zeppelin is absolutely amazing Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham are Rock Gods!! Zep Rules
Bobby McFerrin's mom was my college vocal teacher
Live from the Album " The Song remains the same " is so much better !
Remember this was 1970’s and no auto tune just pure Genius! The Band and the lead singer, Robert Plant = Musical Geniuses!
Listening with your eyes closed is key to enjoying this song. Well done.
Enjoyed this reaction a bunch!
In the Light from Phyiscal Graffiti is also insanely good
Zeppelin was a LIVE band and were blacklisted by many radio stations. They were phenomenal live and I loved seeing them in the 70's.
JPJ can send you on an adventure with his key playing. A total experience on its own. Add in the rest of the band and you obviously can tell why this is one of the greatest Zeppelin songs! Hell, one of the greatest songs of all time!! Awesome reaction🤘🏼
Check out the live MSG ‘73 version of No Quarter. The jam in the middle is outstanding.
The song is from their fifth album " Houses of the Holy ".
The cover you had on your video is from a compilation album :)
That aside, this song is absolute heaven. Jimmy Page's virtuoso playing, John Paul Jones' keyboard and bass playing, John Bonham's unbeatable drumming and Robert Plant's mesmerizing voice.
Back in the day in the 70's on the 4th of July the local radio would play the top 100 songs. #1 was always Stairway to Heaven. It felt like always! My sister and I listened as we tanned. You Shook Me or How Many More Times from the 1st album.
This track really show cases John Paul Jones multi instrumental talents in the band. He could play keys, base ,mandolin .Some one said he was the glue that kept Led Zep together .A real quiet achiever.
This song was so revolutionary.
Best Band EVER! I’m going to see Robert Plant in concert for the 5th time in my life. I love this song, Since I’ve Been Loving You and When the Levee Breaks and practically every song they ever did!
The live version of this song is killer!
