Unfair to folks who made a commitment after the first announcement! But I know you will get many hours of pleasure giving her a run from time to time (or all the time!). Great addition to your collection Zach. I felt the same way after I joined Lionels Century Club in 1999 so I could get what I thought would be a limited number of engines but Lionel seems to have made more than there was a demand for. The value of these engines is half of what I paid.
This really kicks ass brother and I like the 3985 Challenger and 844 big boy. Congratulations on getting your 4014 big. I would love to get the 3985 Challenger.

I agree with you about the certificate of authentification. It looks pretty cheesy. It should look very professional with Mike Wolfes hand written signature on the certificate. Pens aren't that expensive to sign with!
Months before UP announced which Big Boy they were going to repatriate for restoration, I bought my first scale BB at the York meet (I had a RailKing version -- and a Lionmaster Challenger, back when i figured I'd never have an 072 loop). Just by coincidence, mine was #4014 I was pretty tickled when UP announced its selection :D I passed on the first edition of the restoration BB because well, I had a 4014...it was just a pre-resto coal-burner. Maybe I should call that one the "Pomona Edition". Under the circumstances of the second announcement however, I pulled the trigger. As I type this, mine is on its way from MrMuffins' Trains. As I learned from them at the just-concluded 2022 TCA spring meet in York, PA, they had to special order a bunch of shipping boxes from Uline as MTH had packed the BB's two to a carton rather than individual shipping boxes for each unit. It's definitely my most expensive locomotive to date. This purchase was edged out only by my order for five (!) Amtrak Viewliners from Golden Gate Depot (they totaled up to $10 more with the $120 shipping added in)
By the way, did your BB come wrapped in paper inside the plastic sheeting inside the box? Mine did, and I was puzzling over how I'd re-box this thing (since my bare bones loop doesn't have room to keep it on there indefinitely once I run it). As you might have experienced, unboxing this beast will do a number on the paper inner wrap. Why MTH didn't use their usual foam sheet inside the plastic is a head-scratcher, but I suspect it has something to do with the glossy paint. In that light, I don't want to re-wrap it with just the plastic sheet, and the paper was wrecked by all the pointy ends as I unwrapped it for the first time. For a few days I puzzled over a solution till I ran across some 16" square microfiber sheets on Amazon. I plan to use two for the locomotive and a third for the tender. Given the typical use case for microfiber cloth, these should make for an adequate non-scratch barrier between the paint and the plastic wrap. The brand I chose is "Magic Fiber Microfiber Cleaning Cloths" (extra large pack)
I'm currently rebuilding my layout with 72" curves with the dream of owning a big boy. Would you mind sharing the distance from center or side rail you had to cut the trees back? Trying to get specs right before gluing track down so I can avoid cutting walls back. Ha. Thanks!
First engine outa the shop had a busted drive rod, made me a little nervous. Amazingly though MTH had the part in stock and was overnighting it. That’s a good sign at least.

I'm going to pickup a MTH Gauge 1 Big Boy #4014 (70-3049-1) PS3 from a gentleman who was nice enough to set it aside for me. They don't make these anymore or at least I don't think so. I was waiting for USA Trains to come out with the rerun of their Big Boy, beings I already have their J1e Hudson which is beautiful. I'm not really to anal about scale much, as I have LGB, Aristocraft, USA Trains(Charles Ro) and MTH locos and cars. The timing was right and it was available and I wanted it. You made a great decision and shouldn't think twice about it. The short time we spend on this Earth should not be full of "What if's" when we reach the end of our journey. Great Video.

Thanks! I’d love to do Atlas O. Seems to be in short supply though. Have had great luck with my MTH Realtrax personally, so I stick with it. Fastrack looks nice but seems a little pricey to me. Menards has the good old tubular, but notice a lot of power drops using it.
Almost. It was in Louisiana I believe last summer, but was not able to go see it. Need to venture out west one of these days to see it. Same here! Only been able to enjoy it through UA-cam.
Beautiful engine. I ordered one too, but I got the coal version. Always wanted a big boy and mth's big boy is 3 inches bigger than lionels, so I decided to go with mth. Didn't want a big boy to be the same size as my challenger. I was also disappointed that it was changed to BTO. Having a limited numbered run just made it special to me. Any word about the coal version? We're they shipped at the same time as the oil versions? Keep up the great videos.

Crying shame that MTH is calling it quits. Mike ain't even that old. I guess Atlas and ScaleTrains are going to take over most of the O and S stuff, and Lionel is even taking a bit... but MTH was the only one I know of making true scale (1:32) 1 gauge American Standard Gauge trains. All the others model it around visual compatibility with LGB, and that's around 1:25-1:29. Makes it look narrow gauge-ish. And nobody's taking over MTH 1 gauge that I know of. Bachmann has their hands full with slowly resurrecting Aristocraft which was 1:29.
I'd like to have one. But when I spent $1000 on a MTH DAP PRR 2-10-4 set with 6 hoppers and caboose I said that was my limit.....I have stuck to it!!!!! Thanks
Awesome engine though I find the sounds disappointing. The whistle sounds like fog horn, starting out, there should be cylinder synchopated sounds by the two drive trains and the air compressor sounds like a single one rather than dual cross compound units.. But that's just me. Congratulations on a great engine and another fantastic video.
Beautiful steamer overall …. extreme detail, but there’s a couple of reasons I would mainly the whistle ! Sounds more like a tug boat ? Never quite heard the sound this locomotives screams and the dyna chuff seams to be falsetto ? But the primary reasons I’m gonna pass is I’m into the old school actual sounds and a Lionel loyalist thru and thru ….. no one can compare to 5-6 different whistle and bell choices and the sound boards are authentic recordings not a studio recording ! Enjoy
Whistle is definitely different than what’s normally out there, but think it sounds pretty close to the real thing. Lionel for sure hands down is ahead in the sounds department. I have the 4014 now! Originally my intent was to get the CPKC 6644 (the D Day locomotive) at Just Trains but Santa brought the 4014 by mistake! Duh!

Isn't the diesel on the excursion train just there to provide electrical power for cars? I don't think it assists the steam engine for pulling.
