This is a review and demonstration of the NEW (2020) DeWalt 20-Volt Max XR cordless brushless foldable string trimmer (aka, weed whacker or weed eater) model DCST922B / DCST922 with 14" cutting swath, .080" (2.0mm) Trimmer Line, and QuickLoad spool. I got this from The Home Depot as a kit model DCST922P1. The kit comes with a 5.0 Ah XR battery DCB205 and charger DCB115. This tool can also be purchased as part of kit DCK0222M1 which comes with the DeWalt 20V MAX leaf blower (reviewed here: • TOTALLY "MEH!" DEWALT ... ).
This DeWalt weed eater has many pros and cons, so it may not be for everyone. This trimmer has two speeds and the folding design makes it easy to store and transport. In the video, I'll also show you how to replace the trimmer line (it's so easy) and demonstrate the Rhino-Tuff Universal Flex Strap model # 17090 (not included). #dewalt #stringtrimmer #weedwacker

I have been using this exact trimmer for more than a year..... and I have zero complaints and I would recommend to anyone. So much easier than a gas trimmer.....👍👍👍

Your con list is pretty interesting. All trimmers can damage things the string comes in contact with. The warning about 30 degrees is to keep bits of debris or string from hitting you in the face.................probably. They have to say that for liability. The loose folding joint seems pretty finicky since I have not noticed that on mine. I love this trimmer for what it is and that is a light use grass trimmer. Not a brush cutter. I have a gas powered one with a blade on it for brush. Just my 2 cents. Good organized review and pleasant and clear voice.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree that trimmer damage is not a con, it was more of an FYI. I've damaged lots of things with gas and battery powered trimmers. LOL. As you pointed out, this trimmer is best for light use or maintenance. I recently used this trimmer to cut down a 10'x 10' patch of 3' tall thick grass, and while it survived, my gas powered trimmer would have been a better option. Thanks again.

Good video and great yard. Yes I think the guard was designed to lock the lower shaft when folded. I solved the balance issue by attaching my left hand grip below the hinge area and reversing it. I am 5'9" and it now balances just about right for me. As far as edging I have a McLane 4- Cycle gas edger for that job. I have St Augustine grass and it has a very tough root structure. I live in Florida. I got the edger blower combo box for $299 and like you I have some other DeWalt tools with 20v.
Flipping the handle is a great idea for balancing the tool. Thanks for sharing that! A McLane 4 cycle edger is hardcore! Lol. I’d love one, but not sure where I’d store it.
I think the string trimmer and blower combo kit must be a relatively new offering. Someone else mentioned they got it as well. It wasn’t around when I picked up the trimmer and blower. I’m not a fan of the blower because it burns through 5.0 aH batteries much too quickly and power begins to fade after 5-10 minutes. Do you like the axial blower?
I’m definitely going to try it. Does it also work better when you flip the trimmer over to edge? I’ve found I get smoother edges with my CORE and gas trimmer.
I got mine yesterday, I'm five six and I'm going to do the same thing. It's just too unbalanced with it up by the trigger.

In my humble opinion, neither of the tools are my favorites… they’re fine, just not as good as others… and I have a lot of lawn tools. 😃
@@BruceAlanR If I may ask, what would you recommend in a similar price range? I've narrowed it down to the DeWalt (because I have extra batteries) and an EGO kit (trimmer+530cfm blower). I never imagined picking lawn tools would be this difficult 😃
I went with DeWalt because I had batteries for days; however, if I could start over in the battery operated lawn tool category, I’d go with EGO based on performance and run time. For me, the best investment would have been the Power+ multi head system and the 650 CFM blower and mower. They just weren’t available when I started. Had they been, I’d have been able to get rid of all my gas powered equipment. 😃

Great review here. I have this weed eater and the 20V blower and really like them both, except for the weed eater hurting my lower back after awhile. I'm 5'9", going to try mounting the handle below the hinge and see if that helps, also have a sling on the way. I can usually finish an acre lot on a 6ah battery, I keep it in low and feather the trigger. Honestly don't know why high would be necessary, low gets things done just fine. Maxpower Twisted .08" line runs great in it, just don't wind the head backwards or the line all comes flying out as soon as you hit the trigger 🤣🤣 I'm guessing all heads do that if you wind them wrong lol. I've found it to be much better without the guard, it cuts the string too short and doesn't really keep anything off of my legs anyway, there's no difference without it other than faster cutting with longer line. I must have been letting the head scrape on concrete, it's already wearing through at 1 year, a replacement head isn't too bad at $28 though

The trimmer really isn’t modifiable and even if it was, I doubt the motor would hold up cutting brush with a brush blade. In a day or so, I’ll be posting a follow up to this video where I cut down a 10’x10’ patch of 3’ tall grass and weeds with the trimmer... once you view it, you’ll understand what I’m talking about. The larger space around the battery is so you can use the larger 60v 20v flex volt battery in the tool

10/10 review - Loved your part about "not recommended for edging" Quick question, I edge with my Dewalt and the string gets sucked up into the head. Does that happen with you as well?

I usually keep the line pretty long though and if it gets too short I bump it. I wonder if you were to remove the line and try re-spooling it if that might help.
I have seen others post the same thing. Like it retracts.
I just bought the $220 special electric string trimmer with the five amp battery that I charged up fully before using and I got about 15 minutes of use by the second battery it would stop I’d have to let go wait a second or two and then re-press the trigger for it to work again and then it would continue to do that pattern until the next battery had died and which I stopped. I’m assuming this is not normal but considering I just heard you say that in the last about 50 minutes on low. I did not install the guard I don’t know if that’s causing it to act different otherwise are used it just like I would any other weedeater around and like the current echo srm225 that I have. I currently have probably 10 5AH batteries a few 10 a H and then one or two flex volt as well as the new power stacks I wonder if the 10 AH wood could be compatible or caused the problem. Sounds like there’s an issue with the trimmer or the battery. If you’re using it in very tall grass, occasionally blow out the vents, but that wouldn’t account for the short run time.
I like mine but wish it had a strap mount.

I slipped a hose clamp above handle added a ring now I have a strap ring works great.
Will have to get the shoulder strap for mine. After a half-hour of trimming my arms feel like noodles LOL!

For quick jobs... the design is poor. Not ergonomic at all for me. Forward handle should be adjustable and battery pack/trigger should have been tilled a bit more Ike a riffle or pistol...something. Super uncomfortable to use but it does work surprisingly well.

Bruce, your trimmer is near spotless for a 3 month old weekly runner. My DSCT922B looked worst than that after the first use. We got mad weeds on bankings that can only be taken out with a trimmer or a sickle bar mower off a tractor PTO. My only issue with the product was with the head #DWO1DT995 that came with it. It wore out in less than six months. It is designed flat and wide so the plastic wore through on the bump face edge and it didn't take long after that the mechanism was all impacted with dirt and grass. I just bought the bulkier replacement head # DWZSTH999 and fear the same fate after seeing a few videos showing that same problem. I'm trying to think of a way I can reinforce the face with metal or tough plastic.
BTW - I took the string guard off mine. It makes the view for trimming better and allows you to make the diameter of the flinging string any size you want. The larger string diameter would have easily taken out the old dry weed canes you had. I can take out full sized curly/yellow dock plants or even burdock plants.
Ha! The videos are shot over a period of months so you'll notice it looks different throughout the video (for example, it was new when I shot the segment on how to respool it). Having said that, the trimmer was only being used for weekly yard maintenance at that point which is why I eventually made the goofy followup: TITLE FIGHT! The DeWalt 20V MAX Weed Wacker DCST922b vs Tall Grassua-cam.com/video/jE-o_sTJhi8/v-deo.html). Goofy for my kid, so no need to check it out. Regarding the bump head, I agree that it wears quickly. I've had the same experience with my CORE, RYOBI (R.I.P.), and gas powered Husqvarna. I'll have to check out the # DWZSTH999 replacement for the DeWalt.
Good tip on removing the guard. I've done that with my gas trimmer, but I'm always concerned about debris hitting me in the face. Luckily I always wear safety glasses. Thanks again!
While I like the idea of a folding trimmer that folding latch which seems to be some sort of ABS or glass fiber resin material makes me wonder how long till it breaks
I agree with your assessment. This isn’t my favorite trimmer.
When I try to edge with this the string seems to retract back inside a bit and not keep a long string going. My previous Ryobi 18v did the same thing, so I use a Black and Decker electric edger. Works perfect for me as a trimmer though. In my application, I don't even need high mode. Just curious why I always have this problem. It works as an edger for about 5ft before it started acting weird. I know it says not to use it as an edger, but I assumed it was a disclaimer so you didn't sling stuff up at you like you was saying. Maybe They have made it to where if you try to use it like an edger, it won't work correctly? But he seems to not be having problems with it. Also I haven't loaded the string in, it is the pre loaded string that came with it new.
Thanks for sharing that experience. I have a gas powered edger, but since going to a battery powered string trimmer, I don’t use it. The .080 trim line isn’t that strong and will wear down quickly when hitting hard objects or if the ground is really hard. I don’t seem to have much issue maintaining edges with this trimmer or even my old single line Ryobi. If you notice it acting strangely, make sure the vents are kept clean. Edging kicks up a lot of dirt, which can clog the vents.
@@BruceAlanR hmm...I guess I didn’t think it would be eating up the line like that. My old line on my ryobi was .065, so maybe it was eating that up too. This was my first time using it out the box, so it was clean.
I agree it shouldn’t be eating .080 line unless you hit rocks, pavers, stumps or are channeling new edges (not recommended). For weekly maintenance of edges, I don’t usually have to bump the head more than once or twice. I also don’t extend the line out to the full cutting swath to avoid it from being cut off by the blade. I have deep edges on our flower beds and run the tool on low speed. The line isn’t hitting anything other than grass that way.
i bought it for my wife so she didn't have to pull start my STIHL gas trimmer! it's hard for anybody and she likes doing yard work! i too have several dewalt 20 max tools so i have 6 battewries including the biggest battery and three chargers including the fast charger that will charge my biggest battery from one bar to full in 20 minutes! they alll fit and work well! I'm not completely sure ill use my gas trimmer anymore unless i have runaway huge weed issues! i'm big on dewalt and still have a corded circular saw thats been running great for 30 years +! and some basttery powered 18volt tools that use the old style battery thats no longer available and im down to one working 18V battery grrr!
Thanks for sharing your story. I had a bunch of 18V DeWalt tools. I considered getting 20V adapters, but eventually decided to upgrade everything to the 20V platform.
As far as corded tools, I have a bunch of oldies-but-goodies by DeWalt, Makita, and Craftsman, which were my dad’s of I picked up at garage sales when I started out. All served me well for decades. Makes me sad knowing they’re all unemployed. They just sit in their cases waiting for the moment all my batteries die. 😂 It’s frustrating how corded tools would last for decades and I wouldn’t have to dump any money into them other than the occasional set of brushes. Corded tools would just work until they didn’t.
Regarding string trimmers, I still occasionally break out my two cycle Husqvarna because it has all the attachments (pole saw, edger, hedge trimmer). Feels good to have all that power! Ha! The only comparable battery operated string trimmer I’ve tried is the DeWalt 60V, which can be used with FlexVolt batteries and allows for universal attachments… unfortunately it’s also as heavy as a two cycle.

I had a DeWalt trimmer 2021. Battery powered. They have fully replaced it once. Darn thing would not advance string.

You can use line by another brand as long as it’s .080” and spiral shaped. Of course, DeWalt prefers you use their line to ensure proper winding and feeding.

@@BruceAlanR when in doubt. Save some of the stock dewalt line. As long as you can get the other line out to replace with the Dewalt line you should be set. ;)
Anyone have any help on fixing why the motor won’t spin but motor and wires look good and the two power wires that go to the motor get power when trigger is pulled. I’ve not taken handle off to see if there’s a fuse or something that maybe I can bypass or replace. Any help would be great

According to DeWalt the trimmer is not modifiable... although anything can be modified for better or worse. In this case though I don’t recommend adding a brush cutter.

If you used it as much as you say how is it so clean? How do you clean it to look like new?
I'm pretty OCD when it comes to my tools. That means brushing them off and sometimes scrapping off debris before returning them to storage (I don't store expensive tools in our potting shed when temps may reach 100°F). I should also point out that while my wardrobe is consistent when I'm narrating in the workshop, videos are captured over the course of many months (I make it a point to try and wear the same clothes). For reference, the segments where I'm installing the handle and guard, and changing the line were shot 4 months earlier when the tool was brand new. Then I captured footage throughout the early spring and again in summer.
In the next few days I hope to post a followup video where I tackled a 10' x 10' area of field with 3' tall grass while on a quarantined out-of-state vacation (I even work during vacation). In the video, the trimmer looks pretty 'tired' when I'm done. I had to do a fair amount of work to bring it back to my OCD expectations. 😃 Thanks for the question!
Yeah same I just spray em down or use shop towels and wipe em down. It’s simple and keeps things lasting longer

Mine stopped wrkn. Power wires down to motor get power at the motor. There is bunch of tiny waited as well that go to motor they look good all looks good. Is there a fuse or anything up in the handle that good have blown witch would allow pier to go down to motor but not allow motor to spin. I took motor all apart seem look good. I have not took handle part apart yet. Is there anything in there that I could bypass or fix myself.
Does it click and turn a few cm when you pull the trigger?
How about using a larger dis cord, say .095 ?
I don’t recommend it with this trimmer. For best results you gotta stick with .080
Is it variable speed or only two speed?
It has two speeds (high and low) and a variable speed trigger.

I wish I could tell you. My other half chooses the plants and I just plant them. She said she just went to the local nursery and got a variety of large leaf, similar sized (when grown) hosta. I tried to look online to identify the varieties, but quickly got overwhelmed. So many varieties have similar leaf patterns and coloring, yet different names. It’s as if the folks who name paint colors and millennial crayons have taken over naming Hosta at the local big box store. The paint color of our house is called “Classy.” That is not a color! Next time I go to the nursery I’ll try to make a note.

Has anyone swapped the string out for a brush blade like a Renegade or Forester blade? Does it work with this model of trimmer?
I wouldn’t do it since the manual says this model shouldn’t be used with blades. Not my favorite trimmer!
When I turn the head with the machine turned off, it makes gear noise, is it normal?
Mine clicks when I turn the head so not sure without hearing yours.
personally i put the handle on the lower part of the shaft as for me its more confortable

I'm using a 6ah battery and runtime is alot less, even on low. Run it on high I may get 25 minutes and that being conservative
Thanks for sharing that experience! Just curious about a few things. How many years have you had the 6 Ah battery? I’d be interested to know how many times it’s been cycled/charged. Also, is the 6 Ah battery part of the XR line or an earlier 20V Max line? Have you ever used that battery in hard driving tools like the 20V Max Circular saw? What charger do you use? For example, have you ever put the battery on a DeWalt Fast Charger?
My 5.0 Ah XR batteries are all new so they’re likely at peak performance so I’m interested to know what to eventually expect. Thanks!
@@BruceAlanR The trimmer is only a month old 20 V XR same as blower, it came as a combo with a leaf blower. I should add it came with a 4ah XR which would only run trimmer for maybe 20 mins between high and low. The leaf blower 10 mins. I upgraded to 6ah and bought 3 of them. only use them in trimmer and blower and they are all XR. They are keep in a cool dry place and looked after properly. They have been only cycled half a dozen times
Thanks for the info. Is your string trimmer the same model I reviewed? I wasn’t aware it came in a combo with a blower and batteries. The run time of my DeWalt Axial blower (2nd gen), which came with a 5Ah battery is horrible, but not the trimmer.

@@BruceAlanR I have 2 batteries that I rotate with my old 20v DeWalt blower. One is a 6Ah 20v max, the other a FlexVolt 6Ah@20v/2Ah@60v, so basically the same 6Ah capacity. I charge them on a regular 20v charger. Many, many charge cycles on them and I notice shorter run times & slightly less power recently. But, no complaints, this blower (720) & those batteries have given me several years of fairly heavy use. I've got a bunch more new batteries ready to replace my aging ones.
I burnt the motor up in mine. Although I am saddened, this weed eater had seen some grueling days when I am home using it. I've put it through hell and back. Wasn't expecting too much from this product as it's a residential trimmer but I must say if this is a common reoccurrence, I might have to look elsewhere the next time I want to spend $200 on a electric lawn tool.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Two questions, 1) Did you regularly clean out the vents? (That’s how I burned out my old Ryobi); 2) Did you use flexvolt batteries in it? (DeWalt says it’s OK to use them, but they do put out a bit more power).
Same like me..not even 5 mnts i used it..burnt out my motor..just sent back for repair
@@BruceAlanR I didn't clean them much to be honest but I've never had a cordless trimmer before either. I used the dewalt 20v max 6AH batteries. I suppose it dosent help either that I would cycle 6 fully charged batteries through the trimmer at one time to last longer.
Interesting. Running it for long periods shouldn’t be an issue. My guess is the vents got clogged so the motor got too hot.
This is my third summer after moderate use and the trimmer just took a dump on me in the middle of use. I'm pretty upset

Just curious. What charger are you using? I have multiple DeWalt chargers and the 5.0 Ah battery fully charges in 1 hour and 23 minutes. Even the DeWalt rapid changer can’t charge a 5 Ah battery in 15 minutes.

It has happened. Removing the cap of the spool makes it easier to fish out.

While the DeWalt isn't my favorite trimmer, it's a "good enough" option for folks on the DeWalt 20V platform. If I was starting from scratch with cordless/gasless lawn care tools, I'd likely go with the EGO Power+ multi-head or Milwaukee M18 FUEL Quik-Lok system due to their versatility. I have a Husqvarna two cycle, which I got before battery powered tools were the norm, and it has a bunch of universal attachments I use a few times a year (string trimmer, hedge trimmer, pole saw w/extension, edge cuter, sweeper). Unfortunately, neither the EGO nor the Milwaukee power heads are compatible with universal attachments. I believe the DeWalt 60V, Toro 60V, and Hart 40V, will allow for universal attachments, but only the DeWalt 60V would appeal to me. Two considerations that should not be overlooked when choosing a system are the quality of the batteries, and the cost of replacing battery packs. Most reviewers don't mention this. Battery packs start to loose capacity over time and depending on the BMS (battery management system), packs can start to "fail" within 3-5 years. Some of my larger Milwaukee M18 battery packs (specifically HD12.0's with older 21700 cells) have become unbalanced (unbalanced = different voltages between cell banks) so the packs only charge to 3 out of 4 bars even though the individual cells still test good and can hold a charge (PS - I don't recommend opening a lithium-ion battery... it's dangerous). Milwaukee's BMS system, specifically in the HD12.0 batteries, stinks, but other platforms are known to have this issue as well. Using the Milwaukee HD12.0 as an example, when the cell banks in a pack become unbalanced the charger shuts off once a single bank reaches 4.2 Volts to avoid overcharging (there are 5 cell banks wired together in series and each bank contains three 21700 cells wired in parallel, so 4.2V per bank x 5 banks = 21V). Anyway, sorry to get so technical. All that is to say the battery platform is important because the cost of replacement batteries is equivalent to buying a new tool. My two cycle trimmer has been going strong for 10 years and I attribute that to using TruFuel 50:1 pre-mix, which is expensive... I just don't like inhaling the fumes.

Only issue with this trimmer is the balance.. never had a moment issue when locking the hinge correctly

What difference between 922 vs 925?
Thanks for the question! The DCST922 has a 14” cutting swath while the DCST925 has a 13” cutting swath. The 922 folds for easier transport while the 925 does not fold. Shaft length is the same. The 922 has a quick load spool while the 925 does not (you must remove the spool and wind .08 line by hand). Neither tool recommends using accessories like blades or brush cutters. As far as battery life, I haven’t used the 925, so I can’t say whether run time is equivalent, but the 925 allows better visibility of the batteries fuel gauge... of course when it’s “out of gas” you’ll know it’s time to swap in a new battery. I’ve got the exact trimmer. Lasted one summer. POS!like every other trimmer, gas or electric that I’ve ever had. So frustrating!!😡🤬😡🤬🤬🤬

I bought this weed eater. It lasted about ten minutes before it completely stopped working (yes, the battery was fully charged). I would highly recommend not buying it.

I wouldn't count the balance as a pro, all the weight is in the head and you fight it the entire time you hold it. Mine died on me too.

However the spool head is very weak and gets grind away super fast..even the replacement one still horribly weak quality..so be prepared to spend $40 bucks often,,,unless you are cutting lush grass…then it should last longer…but if you are going to be battling rough terrain, rocks, ,,,,perhaps consider something with more durable head…otherwise the device is very good….my only gripe is the poor quality plastic that DEWALT used to make the spool head

Loved mine until the warranty expired, then it broke. The head stopped turning. Big waste of a lot of money.

I like Mac tools and dewalt are together as I work on cars and my Mac tool dealers have been the same persons I like their 30volt battery 1/2 inch impact and underwood light etc pretty good stuff for airless/cordless. I like dewalts 20 volt stuff for most all home use and convenience of same batteries for tools at work and home. ( might have repeated myself). But!!!! What moron designed this weedeater? Works pretty darn good... for 20 volts I honestly am happy except design. You trigger hand is bent horribly (right hand for most people) the battery pack casing is against the bottom of your forearm. The support hand is to high up and not adjustable. If you move the handle below the fold pivot then you better be 4 foot tall. Whomever designed this should be fired and made to pay the company back to supply everyone free replacement "adjustable handles". Other than it is painful to use the machine works really well.

50 minutes on high my ass... maybe 25 minutes. And you probably won't ever use low. My advice is to have extra batteries and make sure to get other tools that use the same ones.
Ha! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. My method of timing is not an exact science, but I definitely got more than 25 minutes. Could have been the battery was brand new. Also, I didn’t have it under load the entire time. That would certainly make a difference.

Your complaints are extremely nominal and trivial. It’s a weed eater, not an edger. It’s not even marketed as an edger. Everything else with the weed eater seems to be very functional and a great value over the PIA 2 stroke gas engine weed eater.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’ve owned many weed whackers over the years and I think this DeWalt places at the bottom of the list… just below the Ryobi. I also think DeWalt’s 20V blower is equally as mediocre. I’ve used both EGO and Milwaukee trimmers (and blowers) and I’d go with them if they were more affordable.
Many folks don’t edge, so edging may not be important to many… so fair point on that. My two stroke has an edger attachment and I’ve used it twice in 10 years A string trimmer works just as well for edging.
The only issues I have with my two stroke are emissions and noise. I used to think it was a pain to mix gas and oil, but then I switched to using 50:1 TruFuel. While TruFuel is more expensive, it makes the tool purr like a kitten. Also, takes me just as much time to fill a tank with fuel as it does to retrieve a battery from the shop. Thanks again!
DEWALT 20V MAX 14” String Trimmer It got a nice folding handle to fit in the trash. It the worst thing Dewalt ever made.

Among the negatives, the price and the proprietary trimmer line makes this a poorly designed product. DeWalt is banking consumers will overlook these flaws and figure that they already are locked in to the brand because of previous battery purchases. 👎
