I'm using a 10ah battery that came with my mower though. Even with that there is a lot of room left in the battery compartment. I feel like these were designed with the flex volt batteries in mind even though they have a different model for the 60v batteries.
It's because he installed the handle on the top section instead of the bottom section and then didn't take time to adjust it. Mine is on the lower section and it balances fine. Also, the trimmer guard has a latch built in to latch the head in place when folded, it was intentional.

Just bought mine in Aug. 2024; hope they fixed whatever causes it to die. I had the same problem with the trimmer being too back-heavy. Was really muscling it. @@Kitearmy I'm not quite clear, why do you see visual access to Power meter as issue at all? While using tool you are doing exactly that - using tool to have a job done. When battery is dead you simply replace the battery and you move on. How many bars is left or used ... that's irrelevant. But if you are so interested in battery status you simply take battery out, check the level, plug it back and keep doing your job. I'm sure no one expects DeWalt to change complete engineering of their battery operated power tools just bcs of this particular trimmer. I have several DeWalt power tools and was never interested in battery status while working with my drill, impact drill, 50-90mm nail gun, Brad nail gun ... and a couple of other DeWalt tools. It's simply pointless remark.
I just bought one. Yes it's un balanced where they say to mount the handle. After 5 minutes I said screw this and mounted the handle below that swivel joint. MUCH better now!! Give it a try.
@@Kitearmy Come on. You are just getting better money off ECO. The battery lights are not relevant to anyone. You need to come clean and start doing biased reviews based on your pocket book. I hate it when people mislead others.
@@madmarlinlodgeguatemala233 so how do you explain all the comments from people who hate this trimmer - I guess they are on ECO payroll too? Please don't mislead people - this trimmer sucks
I purchased this yesterday and tested it out. I noticed that it was perfectly balanced and wondered why. Looks like I stalled the handle a little lower than you did, on the opposite site of the folding point. This was not how the manual recommended I do it. Works well like so, so I'll likely keep it in that position, hah
Thanks for the review, I just bought one of these trimmers from homedepot yesterday and stumbled across this video in my UA-cam recommendations while I was putting it together (very strange timing)! After watching the video, and evaluating your critiques with the trimmer I decided to take it back before I used it, and picked up the 2021 ego trimmer from ace hardware. I'm very grateful that I saw this video, it saved me from making a mistake.
@@Kitearmy I really like how balanced, and light weight the ego trimmer is. The Dewalt trimmer felt like it was fighting me because it's so unbalanced. I'm sold on ego lawn equipment after using this string trimmer.
@@MrMecrob1 I’ve owned two ego trimmers. My last ego power load barely lasted a year and I bought the Dewalt. I’m also wondering why ego no longer carried at Home Depot.
I use two of these for my lawn and tree business. I use 6AH batteries (the added weight helps with balance) and I have installed the handles below the knee turned around backwards so the grip is over the knee and it balances almost perfectly. I believe they still weigh less than echo gas weed eaters.
That was soo helpful! I'm a DeWalt gal, so I go with DeWalt, usually I'm happy with that choice. Re-stringing is such a hassle. Thanks to your video I have it down. Mine came with a blower at a discount, so I guess DeWalt is trying to make up for its many deficiencies. Fortunately I have a small area to trim up. I'll be sure to work it hard to see if it quits like some of your listeners are finding!
I have RA and 3 acres that need trimming between fence line and ditches plus around the house and barn. I can use mine without issues. That’s saying a lot with my joint issues. So I guess when the handle is in the right spot it works just fine. No worries about a plastic head cracking. I need something tougher in my yard.
LOL. Every complaint you mentioned was EXACATLY my issue with this folding unit. Unbalanced. Runtime of the battery on high is ~20 minutes. Good job! The model before this had a MUCH larger battery (one hour runtime on high), the remaining battery capacity faced you, it was balanced. There are many, many negative reviews of this on Home Depot's website pointing out exactly our gripes. A plethora of complaints regrading the string not advancing when bumped. This folding unit feels like it came from the toy section of a Dollar Store....cheap, flimsy. Mine is going back to Home Depot.
The fold up feature is nice.... That's handy. But I'd I've learned anything from this.... Buy an ego with power load. I picked up the carbon shaft trimmer at the beginning of the season. Great choice.
Wow, I’m just skimming UA-cam videos. Looking for a real review and finally found one. Almost all my portable electric battery powered tools are Dewalt and I’m glad to know that I won’t be buying one of the weed whackers. Thank you for your review sir. It’s much appreciated. Some of the other channels are just reading the manufacturer nomenclature and that’s it
Great video! I haven't met too many balanced string trimmers. A 6ah or 10ah would probably offset the balance issue. I've never needed indicator lights to know my power tool is running on low charge. Weed whacking is based on light resistance. There isn't a true need for a charge indicator. Lack of performance and awareness of runtime should offset that.
Just bought this yesterday. I really hope it doesn’t burn out on me being that the housing for the motor has those slits filling up with dirt/debris. Wish DEWALT would’ve put some kind of screen around those openings.
My suggestion is to get the 60v DCST972. It accepts all of my accessories like edger, blower, hedge trimmer, pole saw and tiller and the 60v battery can be used on my 20v tools.
Though the added weight isn’t ideal my last trimmer broke due to the cheap plastic parts. I’d take the extra weight for metal parts which hopefully hold up.
If you want to balance the trimmer, MOVE THE HANDLE. The reason the trimmer is imbalanced is not because of the battery or motor but because you put the handle in the wrong place when you assembled it.
Okay.....I'm going to be as kind as possible. The only way to move the handle to correct the problem, and not make it worse, would be to move the handle forward. Please notice in the video that it is as far forward as possible. I'm going to pin this comment, just in case anyone else thinks this would correct this engineering oversight.
You can place the handle below the hinge. This fixed the balance problem for me, but it means I have to be a little more hunched over to trim - fine for detail work as I usually like to get close anyway, but not ergonomic for long durations. Additionally, when you fold the trimmer, it snaps into the string guard - it appears it was designed to do so even if it does feel a little forced. With the handle on the lower end and the battery compartment snapped it, it transports very nicely when carried by the handle.
@@bandaid8992 Okay - I guess you could - another comment is that if you do this it makes you hunched over. And Dewalt indicated this is the proper place to locate it. OR you could just buy another brand this is better engineered - IMO
When you have to start searching for work arounds it really doesn't bode well for the design when there are so many other options out there. No thanks.
Andrew you are making this very tough for me! I have the Milwaukee Multi-head system with trimmer, hedger and pole saw (and blower) but haven't started using it yet. The EGO Multi-head kits are sold out everywhere, or at least the string trimmer kits bundled with a battery and charger which keep the complete kit from being crazy expensive. The DeWALT Flexvolt Multi-head is really nice but not panning out as a complete system. I got some serious need of a full kit that includes trimmer, hedger and pole saw.
Okay - so here is my advice, if you will NEVER EVER NEVER need any other attachments the Milwaukee is okay. If you think you might want a blower or some other EGO product like the cultivator attachement.....well you know what you need to do. Try Ace hardware too - they have some discounts over Lowes
@@Kitearmy I did check out ACE, and only one at a store that's very far away. I do want a blower and the Milwaukee is good enough for grass clippings but not for the ton of wet leaves I get every fall. You should sell me your powerhead trimmer. I mean, how many trimmers can one man own??
Thanks mate... re the imbalance with tipping towards the head, do you think the handle could be mounted below the hinge or would that muck up the reach.
Excellent review. It's puzzling that so many companies fail to consider weight and balance in their trimmers. EGO got both right, especially with their carbon fiber version. 💯💯💯
There are other things to consider. Dewalt has 90 days return policy if you aren't happy with it. They offer a 3-year warranty. It is the same company that owns Hanson tools, Stanley, and Blacken Decker. Would you buy something just came out on the market. Or a tool business that been around for over 50 years?
My biggest question with trimmers is: How do you edge with them?? My old B&D lets me push a button and flip the end, so I'm still holding the handle and trigger the same way, and I can cut a dead-straight line along the sidewalk at a fast walking pace. I'm really confused and sad to start shopping for a new trimmer and see this feature isn't on hardly any of them! Am I missing something? I see a shot at 4:40 where you are edging, but I can't see how you're holding it. I tried to hold this trimmer inverted in a store and it felt very awkward.
@@Kitearmy yeah - I had no issues using the DCM571 and am actually happy I got the 54V and not the 18V version. I have a video online on it if you like to take a look. Anna
I have this trimmer also. Bought it cuz I have several large capacity DeWalt batteries. It’s true that it’s unbalanced. I’ll move the handle down to get a better balance point. I don’t really like the hinge for two reasons: when I would fold it in half to store it in my shed, by hanging it from the handle, it sticks out from the wall a little too far for my liking, also when folded I fear breaking the plastic shroud when it contacts the battery housing. And a third, after a year of ownership, I can feel “play”, looseness in the hinge while trimming. “No bueno”!
If you take the battery out it folds down pretty neatly into a perfect location on the guard. Makes a huge difference. The biased review did not demonstrate that correctly.
Great video! I saw somewhere that this particular unit would be well suited to certain trades where you may need to trim to access electrical and plumbing areas. But for the homeowner I agree the imbalanced unit doesn't make much sense
Of course you could just take an Allen wrench and relocate the handle forward of the hinge clasp. The small standard battery only lasts for about 10 - 15 minutes so you're better off with a bigger battery too. Balance problem solved. Duh!
It’s really good for acres of fence line and around ditches etc. I think that ego would not hold up the way my Dewalt has d/t the type of areas I am trying to trim. Regular houses in a neighborhood would probably not need something constructed like the Dewalt.
My dcst920 Dewalt lasted 1 year. The Dewalt before it lasted about 1 year. Both are used lightly. I have lots of 40 volt Dewalt batteries for my other construction tools so I tried to stick with Dewalt. Will have to go to another brand weed eater.
Ego the best? That’s very subjective, I’ve seen the comparisons and other reviews from this channel and Kite Army always seems to pick the best Ego model against the low and mid tier competition, and never include the powerful Makitas XRU17 and XRU18.
Mine is vibrating uncomfortable to use junk. The hinge is located where the handle should mount. Not ergonomic at all. Worst Dewalt tool I have ever purchased.
Great video! Can these dewalt batteries be used interchangeably between the power tools and outdoor tools? So many dewalt models I don’t even know which one is current anymore. Any videos on these for beginners like myself ?
So I had the 60V for two years. Not bad. Got the 20V as a replacement since I can run both 20 and 60 on it. Thing isn’t even powerful enough to to cut the string when it’s too long on the head. It immediately shuts the motor down. Piece of junk. Kept the battery, tossed the tool. Got a gas powered Husqvarna.
I don't mind the balance issue and the handle is where it should be. For some moving the handle on the otherside of latch works, problem solved. In my opinion it is a great trimmer but to each his own.
Just bought one new in box with a 5amp hr battery for 80 dollars! The screws for the garden don't seem to be threaded...was hoping you showed you puttingnyours on.
Actually, they does have a bigger battery it’s the 15 ah 60/20v volt battery, and they have 120 V flex volt battery too. But that’s not compatible. In fact, the tool is big enough to fit the 15 ah battery.
Mine lasted less than a year. White smoke coming out of the motor/gear box. Dewalt says not to use as an edger, not to use at a steeper angle than 30 degrees. I was edging when mine got smoked.
The balance issue is exactly why I would stay away from the units with the motor on the bottom by the head. That gets old for your arms fast. Unless you have a very small yard. For that price, look elsewhere.
@@Kitearmy I'm still trying to figure out the reasoning for the folding feature on some of these things. One more step to get frustrated with. I want to pic it up and go trim. It doesn't even fold flat and or lock. You pick it up and the other side swings out.?? At least make it lock in the folded position.
Paid £149 in a sale online . The battery compartment is extra wide to fit flex volt . 3 Yr warranty uk . Would like a hook for storage .no probs so far .
Can I change the head on the dewalt 20v to blades ? I just want something small for weeds in the garden. I tried my angle grinder but . I don’t want to be on the ground.
I didn’t even watch the video, and I smashed the like button! I didn’t even watch the video and I comment because this man is a genius!! Watch all his ego videos. You’ll end up buying all the products. Also the $99 dollar #2 pencil is a must have haha 😂
I've been pretty disappointed in mine. The guard is useless and it spins the wrong way. The stock spool is a dumb design and the handle needs to be 2 inches lower but there's a huge hinge there. Thinking about returning it. Wish I would've watched this video before I bought it lol.
It looks like you have the grip mounted in the wrong position. If you mount the handle below the hinge, the tool will fold completely together and will be better balanced.
I just got the same one and use a flex volt battery and it's still very heavy on the front. I love all of my DeWalt tools..... except this trimmer! Lol. I have a bad shoulder and it's so unbalanced that my shoulder on the arm I'm holding the front up with ends up feeling like I've been carrying 100lbs straight out in front of me for 3 hours lol.
Thanks...I reloaded for the first time with dewalt string...problem is once I start the trimmer the string just unspools without bumping it...any thoughts on why? It loaded just like you showed. Thanks Carl
Same problem. Made sure it was locked but string just shoots out. Thought maybe I'd upgrade to the 60 volt model but it does the same thing. Getting my money back. Maybe Stihl but battery and charger don't come with Stihl and costs as much as the weed trimmer itself.
@@jeankutzer1556 ya....I went with Dewalt because I have more than several batteries from other Dewalt tools....I wish it would work....I called customer service as my warranty was running out....did the "we will call you back" thing....never happened....I'll probably get the out of warrant response when I do reach them....
Nice vid. Did you know that if you remove the battery, you can lock the unit closed? Dewalt also has a new 15Ah battery that may alleviate the balance issue. I also thought I'd let you know that Dewalt released 2 new string trimmers, this one and the DCST972X1. The second one is 17" and 60v. You can also change the head and use other attachments like a chainsaw, hedge trimmer, curved gutter blower, string trimmer and edger
Mine works smooth but when cutting tall weeds or briars they get tangled around the top of the trimmer motor shaft. Huge gap between the motor and the trimmer head.
I wish I would have read this before I bought mine!! its VERY hard on the back. One other thing, I haven't found a shoulder strap that works because of the weird balance point! Has anyone had ANY luck putting a strap on this?
I bought mine for the same reason, already have those batteries... I have 2 ECHO trimmers, one I've had for 12 years and the other I found at the dump for parts. The ECHO did its job but now am tired of storing old mixed gas and such, time to go electric.
I’m at one year & the string won’t stay on , you talking about minor edging even went using the recommended size . I like the convenience of grabbing it & go , but things use to actually last for years at one in time . What happened ? I love it but it’s got to go .
I was considering upgrading my kobalt 24v trimmer with a dewalt one. Today I checked them at a store, damn both dewalt trimmers are too heavy. I'll stick with my kobalt trimmer.
I have a Milwaukee string trimmer. I hate it because when I edge along a chain link fence I cant slow the rpms down low enough to keep from breaking the string. The trigger is supposed to be variable speed and it is but the lowest speed (rpms) is still to fast. Can you tell me if there are any other trimmers that you can slow the rpms way down if you want to. As far as I can tell this is there weak point.
I just got one from a neighbor and I’ve never used one of these before I can’t find out how to extend the line I saw a video about bumping tried it but nothing happens I thought I needed more line but the spool is full I’m lost
I just put mine together and took it out for a try. What a heavy, uncomfortable POS. The motor kept quitting, making me think the battery died. But it started right back up, so I don't know if the brushless motor was getting hot or what. Doesn't matter: I just ordered a corded Black and Decker ST8600 from Amazon.
Hey, so great hands on review. But.. it seems like all I hear is negative review factor this. Bottom line from me is regardless of a 5ah vs 9ah battery. The performance seems the same.
All in all, battery performance surpassed my expectations for what I needed and more. Recently I've transitioned to battery tools and I've never looked back.
I feel like the cons in the review are a little nick picky. But It was right to point out all of them. As far as the other weed eater being lighter and better balanced I wonder which one will last longer since Dewalt builds all their tools to hold to commercial use compare to the rest that cater to homeowners who use tools on a once in while sitsuation.
My only complaint with the Ego line trimmer is the direction the head turns-it runs clock wise-you end up with stones grass etc on your shoes and pants and I have gotten stones hitting my face.
And if u own it for a while youll see that it quits working overall ( my experience)

Good tip
I have one but haven't used it yet. I thought the same thing: move the handle!

I actually checked the instructions - they should fix that
Thanks for the review, I just bought one of these trimmers from homedepot yesterday and stumbled across this video in my UA-cam recommendations while I was putting it together (very strange timing)! After watching the video, and evaluating your critiques with the trimmer I decided to take it back before I used it, and picked up the 2021 ego trimmer from ace hardware. I'm very grateful that I saw this video, it saved me from making a mistake.
Wow - really smart move - so what do you think?
@@Kitearmy I really like how balanced, and light weight the ego trimmer is. The Dewalt trimmer felt like it was fighting me because it's so unbalanced. I'm sold on ego lawn equipment after using this string trimmer.
@@MrMecrob1 That's what happened to me
@@MrMecrob1 I’ve owned two ego trimmers. My last ego power load barely lasted a year and I bought the Dewalt. I’m also wondering why ego no longer carried at Home Depot.

On my Dewalt Trimmer is a 8ah battery, combined with years of using their products in a industrial setting. Great service life.
I use two of these for my lawn and tree business. I use 6AH batteries (the added weight helps with balance) and I have installed the handles below the knee turned around backwards so the grip is over the knee and it balances almost perfectly. I believe they still weigh less than echo gas weed eaters.
I was wondering why by “bumping “ was not working . Thanks for showing the right way to load the string
Glad to help
I have the Ego 56v. Works great. If battery shits the bed in 4 or 5 years, I'll never buy another battery trimmer. I'm giving it a try.
Been using the first gen ego trimmer for years now. Still going strong!

@@Lee-lb9qh I tested the 40v - maybe I got a lemon
I bought it and I love it works perfectly for my half acre. I will say I do hate how you can’t see the battery charge level.
it's the little things

Some of the other channels are just reading the manufacturer nomenclature and that’s it
Glad it was helpful
I purchased the combo deal with a blower. The blower was the real tool. The trimmer serves its purpose for small yard work.
Thanks mate
Just bought this yesterday. I really hope it doesn’t burn out on me being that the housing for the motor has those slits filling up with dirt/debris. Wish DEWALT would’ve put some kind of screen around those openings.
My suggestion is to get the 60v DCST972. It accepts all of my accessories like edger, blower, hedge trimmer, pole saw and tiller and the 60v battery can be used on my 20v tools.
Though the added weight isn’t ideal my last trimmer broke due to the cheap plastic parts. I’d take the extra weight for metal parts which hopefully hold up.
I had an embarrassing day today with this trimmer for a client. Thank you for sharing.
You are so welcome!
@@Kitearmy You can place the handle below the elbow.
@@Allen-bm6tz I always judge a man by how many trimmers he owns :)
Right on
why not just move the handle to the lower part of the shaft, below the hinge?
There are other things to consider. Dewalt has 90 days return policy if you aren't happy with it. They offer a 3-year warranty. It is the same company that owns Hanson tools, Stanley, and Blacken Decker. Would you buy something just came out on the market. Or a tool business that been around for over 50 years?
50 years and this is the best they could do? shame
I bought the 54V version (model 571). It is certainly better balanced but also has the motor at the front 🙋🏻♀️Anna
The motor at the front is okay - but all that metal and gearing seems overkill
@@Kitearmy yeah - I had no issues using the DCM571 and am actually happy I got the 54V and not the 18V version. I have a video online on it if you like to take a look. Anna
Just bought 1 from home depot for 129.00 for at home use it works great
I have this trimmer also. “No bueno”!
Well said
If you take the battery out it folds down pretty neatly into a perfect location on the guard. Makes a huge difference. The biased review did not demonstrate that correctly.
Great video! I saw somewhere that this particular unit would be well suited to certain trades where you may need to trim to access electrical and plumbing areas. But for the homeowner I agree the imbalanced unit doesn't make much sense
Thanks mate - they will get it right next time
Of course you could just take an Allen wrench and relocate the handle forward of the hinge clasp. The small standard battery only lasts for about 10 - 15 minutes so you're better off with a bigger battery too. Balance problem solved. Duh!
@@philipgrice1026 Yup, that's what I did. Perfectly balanced and the reach for the new handle position actually seems more comfortable.
It’s really good for acres of fence line and around ditches etc. I think that ego would not hold up the way my Dewalt has d/t the type of areas I am trying to trim. Regular houses in a neighborhood would probably not need something constructed like the Dewalt.
The handle mounts below the joint for a perfect balance

For better weight distribution... Install the handle on the other side of the hinge mechanism.

Yes the 20v tools have interchangeable batteries
So I had the 60V for two years. Not bad. Got the 20V as a replacement since I can run both 20 and 60 on it. Thing isn’t even powerful enough to to cut the string when it’s too long on the head. Thanks for the vid. Did not know how to change the thread. Now i do.. Thanks. Regards from Holland. Love my dewalt..

This is a dud
Are the stihl kombi attachments compatible with the other?
It looks like you have the grip mounted in the wrong position. If you mount the handle below the hinge, the tool will fold completely together and will be better balanced.
