Fun fact. The actress who played Idgy actually did the bee scene because the stuntwomen wouldn't or so I've heard!
She really did it ?????
There's a way to get near bees. I have accidentally been in the same situation when I sat on a bee's hive...and I was eating a peanut butter and honey sandwich. I was 7. I was covered in bees. I vividly remember the experience. My friend ran off, screaming, and flailing but I had been swarmed immediately. I got scared for all of 20-30 seconds and then just accepted that this could be how I died. Then I got calm. And it was easier to think, the bees reacted almost 1-3 minutes later. I slowly stood up. Then I just stood there and breathed, focusing on how to move carefully over the dry rivets of dirt in the field. It took me about 45 minutes to get to her house where I was staying. She had not insisted I get help, she'd been having the 4 bee stings removed. I didn't get bee stung. I had hundreds of bees on me. I told me parents about it...but asked why I didn't get stung. It can have to do with pheromones and movement. I was thinking about 'cool green grass through my feet' which had been this phrase for calm mental focus. Also some thoughts were rapid and some were slow, sluggish.
True, the actress did the scene
I heard she actually got stung quite badly.
Yes, and from what I hear she actually took up beekeeping after doing the role.
When Idgie asks Buddy "what if he[god] made a mistake?" It's clearly because she's already feeling different because she's gay, and Buddy says "God doesn't make mistakes" it's totally about homosexuality.
Facts 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The book never really peeks into the bedroom but it’s clear they were both in love. I think keeping the relationship muted is fitting because that’s the way the town accepted them. Everyone knew no one pried . Maybe that’s why the time seemed more gentle than today.
Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe is on of my favorite books and I highly recommend it with one caveat: if you are Team Idgie you might be disappointed. She isn’t quite as pure as the character in the movie.
That tender kiss at the lake, the “date” with honey, Ruth’s admission she loves Idgie in the courtroom. And that playful fight at the restaurant. I mean, how many more hints do you need! They loved each other. It’s just pure, true love.
Actual fried green tomatoes are very tasty. There are a FEW places up north that make them from time to time. They're a seasonal dish in certain restaurants. I wonder where someone could find green tomatoes to fry.
@@tenderpawsm473you can find green tomatoes at farmers markets and orchards here in central Indiana
Have you seen "The Color Purple"? If you liked this, you will like it. My favorite movie ever.
I have not. I’ll add it to the list!
It's another example of queer erasure in film (the novel is another lesbian romance)
However, these are 2 of my favourite films despite that. Two feminist films
Idgie and Ruth were absolutely a couple in the book this movie was based on. You should read it I think you would enjoy. Thanks for a great reaction!
I think there's a moment when Idgie mentionned nearly she likes Ruth
I intend to read the book. The movie was a little intense for me. The novel might not have as much of an impact, but I'm still looking forward to it.
@tenderpawsm473 I read the book many, many years after I had seen the movie. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and its 2020 sequel, also written by Fannie Flagg.
@@BostonMarcus What is the name of the sequel? And which did you prefer between the original novel and the film?
If you like sour stuff, like rhubarb, or salt & vinegar chips, you'd like fried green tomatos.
Fried Green Tomatoes is very much a 'feel good tragedy', with Steel Magnolias and others. Mixing the uplifting and empowering with the dark depths of despair and trauma. It's a tricky mix to get right, but when it hits it crushes.
For a 'feel good tragedy', but with more action - Last of the Mohicans.
and the soundtrack and cinematography in Last of the Mohicans is STUNNING
Memoirs of a Geisha does this as well! Well said, gorgeous movies.
Fried green tomatoes are delicious! Great reaction 😁
"These Buddys need to stay away from the train tracks." 😅 no truer words were ever spoken. And I love fried green tomatoes. But I love tomatoes
Yes in the book Idgey and Ruth are a couple
I have always loved this movie. I know that Mary Stuart Masterson in this and Some Kind of Wonderful did things to a lot of our sexualities :D
The book is good, too. It surprisingly takes the relationship between Idgie and Ruth out of subtext and makes it VERY text. In fact, the whole town pretty much accepts Idgie as a man. But the movie gives Ruth a lot more agency & personality. It cuts out a lot of characters & stories to focus more heavily on a few, which was a good call.
The lady writing on the chalkboard near the beginning is Fannie Flagg, the author of Fried Green Tomatoes. I think the movie was so much better than the book. I just happened to stumble upon your channel with this movie & had to watch. It's one of my favorites. I have seen it many, many times & cry every time. I really enjoyed your reaction & commentary.
I read the book too and yes, the movie is far better....same thing with Forrest Gump
Fannie Flagg was a regular celebrity member of several game shows during the 70s. Match Game comes to mind. Her Southern humor always got hige laughs.
Fried Green tomatoes are actually pretty good! And I’m not a huge tomato person.
Some of my pet sitting clients have gardens I water and I'm always on the lookout for the perfect green tomato for frying. Yuuum.
Amazing classic Fried Green Tomatoes directed by Jon Avnet starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louise Parker, Cicely Tyson, Chris O'Donnell and music score by Thomas Newman. Thank you Laura great reaction excellent TOWANDAAAAAAAAAA😊😊😊😊😊
I put this up there with the Shawshank Redemption. Not on top but close. It was not a chick flick but real drama.
This is the best reaction to FGT I've seen! I love your emotions, your potty mouth, your analysis. I'm glad I found your channel.
Hay great reaction girl.
I’ve got another girl power movie for you.
FIRST WIFES CLUB and
BEACHES. this one you will need tissues. Well for a start anyway. I’ve got lots to tell you. 😊❤️
Adding them to the list thank you!! ❤️
6:40: In case you didn't know, that woman writing on the blackboard was Fannie Flagg, the author of the book, 'Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café'. 😊
Also, the stunt-double who was supposed to take the honeycomb from the hive in the 'bee charmer' scene chickened out, and Mary Stuart Masterson wound up doing it. (No CGI; it was really her) 🐝
I always wondered about the bee scene! It looked real! Shes so bad ass for that
Fried Green Tomatoes are delicious! Savvy with a tangy taste
In Georgia, you're chance of finding them as an appetizer is relatively high compared to other states, but yes, fried green tomatoes are delicious!
Definitely read the book. Ruth and Idgie were together, Idgie had other ( female) lovers. There were lots of 'out' LGBT ppl at the time in reality. The book also goes into more detail about the poverty, racism, the attempted cancer 'cure', all of it. Also I think you missed that Ninny *is* Idgie!
Great movie, great reaction. You see the magic of beautiful filmmaking, when it taps into tears. You should watch “Driving Miss Daisy”, if you haven’t already. Another Jessica Tandy classic, it co-stars Morgan Freeman. You know you can’t go wrong with him.
You would get a kick out of Bernie. Jack black as a funeral director in a small southern town has all the southern charm.
Directed by Richard Linklater… and based on a true story!
Great reaction! This is such a great movie! I fell in love with Idgie when I saw this movie too. She doesn't take s*** from anyone and will back it up. Mary Stuart Masterson did an amazing job. This movie is always a tear jerker and is on my continual movie playlist but I usually watch it during winter time. I am not apposed to seeing it again in a few months.🥰
Idgie wasn't totally alone after Buddy died. This was a tragedy, but she still had Julian. He may have been a pain in the ass and the bond might not have been as strong, but if watching closely, he could be seen comforting Idgie after Buddy passed.
He also helped her save Ruth. And at the end of the book it was shown they had moved to Florida and started a roadside shop together.
My Mother made pan-fried green tomatoes, with flour and butter. We loved 'em....
Loved your reaction to my favourite movie. Whenever I feel down I watch this movie or in this case see if I can find a sympathetic reaction. I think my favourite moment is when we discover Smokey had fallen in love with Ruth the moment he saw her, "we all did". It wasn't just me.
so happy you picked up on the vibes between ruth and idgie immediately.
Ed said, "how in the hell can you hit someone 6 times by accident?" I counted 4 hits.
The book goes far deeper into the Ruth's and Idgy's romance than the Hollywood movie did in 1991.
If fried green tomatoes are made correctly it's one of the best things you'll ever eat!!!
Of course Fried Green Tomatoes are delicious. They made a whole movie named after them. In the South you can get them. They are tomatoes that aren't ripe yet and still green on the stem. Take them off, dip them in some batter, fry them up. They are delicious, they have a bit of a sour taste imho, but they are still delicious.
I wish more ppl would watch this one
I just rewatched this movie a week ago. It reminds me of growing up in the south. But the acting is great the story is moving and well executed. Always makes me cry.
Loved your reaction to it!
So, do you think Mrs Threadgood was really Idgie?
Just gained yourself a new subscriber loved your genuine reaction

Recipe for Fried Green Tomatoes
4 medium to large firm green tomatoes sliced in half inch rounds.
1 cup of flour
Salt and pepper to taste
Garlic powder optional
2 large eggs mixed with quarter cup of milk.
1 cup of Panko bread crumbs.
Dredge tomatoes in flour, salt, pepper and garlic powder.
Dip in egg mixture
Dredge in Panko
Fry in oil of your choice on med high heat.
Turn when golden brown
Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
These will be firm much like a cookie and will not be oily and soggy.
For extra kick, sprinkle on Olde Bay Seasoning.
For a sweeter taste, use tomatoes that are just barely pink.
When Grady called Idgie "a Goofy girl" he knew. His face when they were having the food fight, he knew. Everyone knew and accepted that Idgie and Ruth were a couple. Buddy Thredgoode Jr. Thredgoode, not Bennett.
Fried green tomatoes remind me of fried pickles- same kind of sour flavor. Great with spicy and/or creamy/ranch dips. I like fried green tomatoes about 10x as much though. I'm kind of meh on fried pickles, they're a little intense.
@LauraShawnLee, I just found your channel, and I follow a lot of the big reactors and I have to say, I just love your channel so far. I saw this one and Steel Magnolias and it got me to subscribe. You remind me of the actress that plays "The Waitress" in Always Sunny In Philadelphia, in the best possible way. Keep up the good work.
And yes, Misery was filmed the year before Fried Green Tomatoes (I think).
The book is a queer love story but the film engages in queer erasure
fun fact: the author of this book was upset they wouldn't let the real lesbian relationship be shown, so the author of the book plays the sex educator.
Seeing this movie in the theater in 1991 was a strange experience because you were surrounded by people sobbing. The first time I went to it I saw it with my husband who cried his eyes out as well. And then I took every one of my friends to it and we all cried our eyes out together. It's because we love the characters so much and they are so real. They love each other and they have tragedy, just like real life. Fewer tears, and it would have been a failure.
Found you through the Martyrs reaction, and now I'm sitting here crying with you over Julia Roberts and Kathy Bates movies. AS ONE SHOULD.
Very important queer media, and a delicious summer snack.
Saw this movie in the theater with my soon-to-be wife; it was a big hit at the time. It's one of my faves .....Your reactions are priceless! You're totally in tune with this film, though I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention their relationship at the end, though you did say Idgie appeared to be in love.....Movie trivia: both the actresses who played Ruth & Idgie said in later interviews that they wished the film had been braver and more open about them being a couple. Also....There's 2 schools of thought on the wink/wink nudge at the end, with the honey at the grave; I believe Ninny IS Idgie. She just knows too many personal, intimate things, you know?
The teacher at the first session was the author
So ichee is the old lady telling the story 😮😊
There is a cameo of the author, Fannie Flagg, of the book in it. She is the first of the teachers in her women's group. steel Magnolia's is based on a true story written by one of Shelby's brothers. Fannie is the one in green telling them to put the spark back in their marriage.
The book (which I also love) makes it clear they were a couple. They filmmakers wanted to take out the relationship because at the time they were worried about it offending audiences. The actresses decided to hint at it, I think they did great with what they were allowed to slip in. I love watching people react to this movie, it's been one of my favorites for like 30 years or so lol.
Great reaction!
Per Wikipedia: 'Idgie and Ruth's relationship is not explicitly described as lesbian'
You can love your best friend more ways than sexually, and I think it's the fandom who has shipped them. *shrug*
Did you get that “Ninny” was actually Idgie?
This was implied in the film. My understanding is that they're two distinct characters in the book.
Please tell me you got the insinuation in the movie that Mrs. Threadgoode was Idgie in the end. She's Idgie's sister-in-law in the book, but they changed it up in the movie.
girl, if you think these were many time lines...THEY LEFT ONE ENTIRE GENERATION OUT OF THE MOVIE! (big george's kids and also adult buddy "stump" jr) and also some heartbreaking parts like smokey's time on the streets and his death :( the book made me weep
You should watch Boys On The Side 1995.. Mary Louise Parker, Whoopi Goldberg, Drew Barrymore and Matthew McConaughey. No one Has done a reaction yet which still surprises me. The sound track rocks as well. You will love it
Fanny Flagg is one of my favorite everything, she is so damn talented, I watch old match games just to see her.....
How about The Devil's Arithmetic. You will need tissues. It's one of those movies I think everyone should see.
What I love about this movie is that even if they couldn't show their relationship, because they wanted but couldn't 'cause you know the 90s, the whole cast knew and they acted it like it was suppost to be. A little thing that I always love to remember, I'm from Italy and I love that in the court scene, when Ruth say "and I love her", here they translated it with the dubbing as "I love her in that way". In English you use I love you even for friendship etc.. (even if is the context that change the meaning, like here is that for sure, but is the same word), we have two separate words for that so is more specific, and they chose the "I love you in that way" one, she say "e io la amo", and I LOVE her. Thank god they got it hahah. I mean, is not a word that is need to understand they are in love but it helped me more to get it when I was little. I was like "so I'm right, they're in love bitch!"
I was also anticipating a more lighthearted film. All I knew about it before I watched it was the car wreck scene, too. I had to watch it and then write about it in 11th grade English. I was caught by surprise by the content in this film and I almost broke down in tears right in class. Then, I had to watch it a second time to gain a thorough enough understanding to write an essay on it. I don't think I hated any movie villain more than Mr. Bennet and there are rumors that the actor (Nick Searcy) is also a d-bag. I didn't really want to watch the film a second time, because it was so sad, but I had to write a good enough essay to please my teacher. This film seriously fazed me. Maybe, the book wouldn't have caused the same emotional reaction. On screen and in detail is usually more intense for me. But reading takes a lot of time.
32:28 It even brought me to you. Thank you for watching its my favorite movie
My mother had this on and I remember walking in to, "I can't even look at my own v." Maybe, Idgie wouldn't have minded looking at it instead. 😂
When Smoot says that Idgie couldn't beat the law, he was mistaken. It looks like they DID beat the law. Sipsey got him good.
If you look when Sipsey is picking up the plates whewhile Big George is cooking the BBQ at the end, she is wearing some new shoes that are a bit too big for her
I've watched 2 of your reaction reviews and I love your style, Just susbbed
Fried green tomatoes are wonderful, with a good remoulade sauce... I look for them every year but most restaurants never get em right.
I've seen this movie so many times, and I end up crying EVERY time. 😭❤
Fried green Tomatoes are awesome as long as their breading is properly crispy……. Find some classic southern recipes …… there are many ways to fry them it if the breading isn’t right it takes away from the flavor
Fried green tomato is perfect We wait every August for them
Ruth didn't say that she should visit Frank did she (at about 22.27)?
Fried green tomatoes (the food) are good! Very easy to make. You should try it sometime!
Where would I find green tomatoes? Or do you grow them?
@@tenderpawsm473 you can sometimes find them in grocery stores or produce markets. They may be harder to find outside the southern U.S. since it's a southern dish.
I feel really good that I was the 667th like :-)
I really loved what you had to say at the end❤ great reaction
Fried Green tomatoes are great, but I am from the south.
This movie is very touching.
Jessica Tandy and all the casts are amazing
My requests coming soon ?
Yes! I have it scheduled for October (:
Love Fried Green Tomatoes
one of my favorite all time movies
Such a great film!
You are on point
Hello
This is such a great review! I was cheering for them to be a couple(in my mind they are!) Sure, it can be a love story! I’m 10 minutes in and LOVING THIS VIDEO! Already subscribed, I love it that much!!!!!!
Just finished. This was one of the best reviews ever. I laughed and cried with you. Well, I’m a gay guy, that’s expected. It’s such a beautiful movie. Thank you for this.
Gawwd I love your sense of humor, lol
They were soul mates for sure!
The fact that she is actually Idgey is so sweet to me.
She's not though. It's made clear in the book but not so well in the movie, even though we are given her name in the movie _and_ she said she had a crush on Buddy. They seem to imply she is Idgie but she's actually her sister-in-law.
@@that.ll_do_pig I don't know.....'Ninny' seems to know a lot of intimate stuff
@@barryscott8041 well, when she presents herself to Evelyn, she says she married one of Idgie's brothers
They are sisters-in-law.
She is married to Cleo, had a crush on Idgie's brother Buddy, definitely not Idgie.
The old Lady was Mrs. Threadgood...Iggy Threadgood, btw....
I was wondering about that! I looked it up afterwards and the internet said in the book it’s not the same person but I did feel like the movie strongly hinted at that.
It was a WEIRD thing for the movie to do, since Ms Threadgoode married into the family and had a child.
She isn't, the old lady is Ninny Threadgoode who married Idgie's brother Cleo
@@laurashawnlee I don't think the movie implies they are the same person, I think we just forget the detaild from the beginning of the movie where she states that she had a crush on Buddy...something a little sister would (hopefully) not say about her brother. Lol
@@that.ll_do_pig She clearly say "I married her brother, Cleo" at the beginning, so either people are stupid or idk 😂. She's Idgie's sister in law.
