I saw this movie in the theater, twice one summer when it came out. It was a big hit. Your reaction is so honest and sweet. I love the scene when Idgie brings the pie to Ruth's house...with the music. You said "Is Idgie in love with Ruth?" Your instincts are true; yes Idgie was in love. And stayed that way. At the end you said "Friendship" between the two, but........Also, me and most folks believe that the old lady, "Ninny" is/was indeed Idgie. So much intimate, personal knowledge of things, you know

Though the movie doesn't outright say it, yes Ruth and Idgie were in a romantic relationship with each other from some time shorty after Ruth left her husband up until her death. So knowing that Idgie is a lesbian clears it up a bit further that her and Ninny are not the same person, but instead sisters in-law. Ninny was married to one of Idgie's older brothers (she says so when she first introduces herself to Evelyn), whom she had her son with. Great reaction! Secret's in the sauce!

I heard the actresses years later say, they wished the film had been braver about them. Also I disagree; for me, Ninny and Idgie are one and the same. See the winking hint hint at the end? No one but Idgie herself would know all the intimate details. Despite what was said...I'm not alone in this opinion

Here in Atlanta, fried green tomatoes are very popular. They are quite literally unripe, green tomatoes cut into slices, breaded with cornmeal, and either pan fried or deep fried in oil.

Ninny and Idgie are not the same person. Ninny was married to Idgie's brother. Fried green tomatoes are delicious if done right. Slice them about 1/4" thick, dip in beaten egg or milk/buttermilk, coat in seasoned corn meal or mixture of corn meal and flour, fry in shallow bacon drippings or oil until golden brown on each side. Sprinkle with a little salt while still hot and fresh out of the pan. Delicious! I'm in Georgia where the lake ended up and that's how we do it. 😊

They are not in the book at least. But the movie makes it very ambigous. She says in the beginning that she married Idgie's brother Cleo, but the ending makes you think they are the same person. If they're not, the ending is very strange. So I really don't know what the heck they were thinking with that. Either Ninny lied in the beginning of the movie, or she's pretending to be Idgie at the end. lol

Thanks Lisa for sharing your experience with this beautiful movie!
I loved the two story lines. Of course it's about friendship, but for Idgie and Ruth it was something more. I heard from someone who read the book, that in there the relation between the two is clearly a romantic one. In the movie only Idgie's feelings are more or less suggested by the way she looks at Ruth. It's a pity they did not dare to include some scenes that could hint somewhat more at the nature of their relation. A movie that came out somewhat earlier that did dare to do that was Deserts Hearts, also a movie I can recommend, or if you're interested in a more contemporary movie, Ammonite (can be viewed on Amazon Prime).
    Warm regards from the Netherlands!

Ninny is not Idgie, she married into her family by marrying one of her brothers' Cleo which she mentions in the beginning of the movie plus she mentioned having a crush on Idgie's brother Buddy. The movie tries to tease the idea that they could be the same person at the end but in the novel the movie is based on, it's clear they are two separate people.

It's clear in the book, but I always thought that the movie made no sense regarding this. They clearly intended to suggest at the end of the movie that they are the same person, but in that case, why did Ninny lie about who she was when she first met Evelyn? It makes no sense, unless she actually married her own brother (and had a crush on her other brother), which I can't imagine they would go for. I mean, if they wanted her to be Idgie they could have just skipped the line about her marrying Idgie's brother and it would have been fine.

Yes 100% Krispy Kreme Donuts are the best I've loved them ever since I was a kid and still enjoy them today especially fresh from their stores but from a local grocery store is still really good also even if it's not fresh😋🤤🍩 ok I don't mean to over react but BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES🐝😱ok I feel better now lol. I hate to see the abusive marriages and relation ships in movies and shows like what we see here it just hurts to look and think about also seeing people being unnecessarily mean and rude for no reason at all is just ridiculous and uncalled for. One of the truly saddest and darkest things is bad men doing things like this guy did in this movie breaks my heart😢. Ok I get standing up for yourself and not taking nonsense from anybody but I think the whole car parking thing went a little to far just a little also 😆🤣😂Wanda the Avenger Lol. and come on I was not expecting 2 train deaths in 1 movie thats just wrong and depressing 😥But while he was a terrible man I don't think that was a good way of disposing the body 🤢🤮. I agree the train deaths were big shocks, however the second was not an actual death, just a loss of a limb, but that they went after Ruth's son Buddy, was a shocker to say the least and the way they played it out was a rollecoaster of emotions on it's own. The car park scene was fun for me and I get the idea of it because she had to hold her pose for soo very long being the perfect quiet wife, not doing anything out of place and that was just how she exploded, the final straw and it was a satisfying scene 🤗
As you said, many shocking moments, but very touching and emotional movie overall❤

Well, you must try fried green tomatoes! Anything fried is good, but the way they are done especially in the South, is pretty special. Crispy Creme is good, but they are very soft and very sweet. Not really health food, but for the occassional treat they are fine. I like your reactions very much. Thanks for your thoughts. The movie shows a different place and time. There is goodness and friendship that endures, and some ugliness that shocks and challenges good people to seek a way out. Women, and the undertrodden, face bigotry, rudeness, indifference, and somehow friendship binds them together and they survive difficult times. Life has a way of teaching many lessons, we see some of them here. And as we learn a bit about others, if we are honest about how that makes us feel, we can learn a little about ourselves too.

Your reaction was well worth the wait, Lezy. I'm glad to see you enjoyed this dramatization of so much that was good and bad from those two eras of US Southern society. I agree with you that the character, Frank Bennett, was the worst. He was a brute, a wife-beater, and at the very end, a baby kidnapper. Such a loathsome character.
It's sad to admit, but the behavior of Evelyn's husband is not uncommon. A lot of American men plop down in front of the TV to eat and watch sports after coming home from work. The idea of ever being physically active does not occur to them when they can just watch other people playing their favorite sport. Of course, there are exceptions, but eating dinner while watching "the game" happens in a lot of American homes.
Did you have any difficulty understanding the southern accents that the actors were using? They were pretty accurate in mimicking how Southerners speak, although some people in the South have such a "drawl" that it sounds like a foreign language to people who live in the northern states.
Thank you for making another great movie reaction, Lezy. It was very interesting to hear your heartfelt assessment of this captivating film. :)

      Hi William, thanks.
I was able to understand them pretty well, I don't think there was anything I couldn't figure out or understand particularly.
I must honestly say, there probably are men like Evelyn's husband in SA, but I have never become aware of that, as my dad also helped with chores and cooking and most of our friends' dads have been involved in such tasks. All my friends' husbands are involved with doing household chores and tasks,so we are not really used to this. I don't know what it was like those years in SA, but it is a strange thing for most of us and for most people I know at least. If a guy wants to watch a sports game, they usually do so on a Saturday afternoon, which is the usual time for the bigger games, but then normally most families watch together, or the family would invite some other friends and then all the friends would watch together. Everybody would chip in with getting snacks and then everybody would spend that time together. There are most probably exceptions also, but this is just what my experience have been.
Glad you enjoyed the reaction 🤗

      Hi Lezy,
I'm happy to hear that kind of dinnertime routine hasn't made its way to SA. Perhaps it's just a phenomenon that happens in the US, or maybe I'm extrapolating too much from observations of my own family, and the families of friends and acquaintances. Anyway, as you saw in the movie, it is not healthy marital behavior for a husband to neglect paying attention to his wife in favor of watching something on the TV. So, kudos to the men of SA! 👍
I think your fluency in English is very impressive. The "Southern drawls" in this movie would have really challenged the English comprehension ability of people I've known from other countries. 😊

Keispy Kreme is a southern company and they are the best!! I graduated from high school in Savannah, Georgia and there was a Krispy Kreme restaurant that stayed open 24 hours not too far from downtown so when my friends and I would be driving home after going to the clubs we’d stop and get hot doughnuts at about 3 am

Krispy Kreme, they're ok, but to me they have an artificial "plastic" taste. I've always preferred Dunkin' Donuts, but it's been so long since i've had one (or a dozen) i hope THEY haven't changed their taste by now. Your taste buds may vary. : )

    • @TTM9691

Dunkin Donuts tastes pretty artificial and plastic, you'll be disappointed! I don't know if they changed or we did, but they're pretty lame. I'm lucky, I live near possibly the best donut place in New York City (possibly the world!), Peter Pan Donuts in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. In the mornings, especially on the weekends, there are lines out the door....WAY out the door. Just a tiny little Polish bakery, nothing fancy, just as cheap (if not cheaper) than a Dunkin' Donut. I'm spoiled for life! lol

We have a place that is quite far from where I live that is called Wicked Donuts and they are extremely delicious if you have a good sweet tooth, but I'll try the Krispy Creme if I can get some. As you said, all our tastebuds differ and the sad part is even here with us, most of what used to be delicious, nowadays really does taste like plastic, things are not made with the same care and passion it used to as in past years and it is rare to find something that is still authentic, tasteful & delicious when it comes to these kind of treats and delicacies.

8:37 here is the truth about Krispie Kreme.
if you can be so lucky as to taste a plain krispie kreme doughnut when it is still warm from being baked, you will believe you've experienced heaven.
There is no other equal.... just the plain glazed doughnut.
    it is perfection.
But you can only experience the perfection when it is still warm from the oven.

similar to sushi... it has to be prepared by someone who understands the process and can prepare it correctly.
they are absolutely divine when prepared by someone who knows what they are doing.

Ninny married CLEO (there was no brother named Theo). And the brother who teased Idgie when she was coming down the stairs was JULIAN. He became her closest sibling in later years, especially when they moved to Florida. Read the sequel "The Wonder Boy of Whistle Stop" to find out what happened to all the people in "Fried Green Tomatoes" (just ignore the mismatched timelines).
