How a Video Game You’ve Never Played Changed the Biggest Sport on Earth | PTFO

- Sports video games pride themselves on their simulation of reality. But the most popular ones that Americans know and love - Madden, FIFA, NBA 2K, MLB: The Show - cannot compete with an intensely specific and uniquely important game called Football Manager. Which got so good at simulating soccer that it converted a worldwide army of real-life players, coaches, and executives into genuine obsessives - changing the multi-billion dollar soccer industry itself. PTFO’s London correspondent, Kieran Morris, embarks on a global quest to explain the Football Manager revolution… and jeopardizes his impending marriage in the process.

FM is the most ruinous, addictive, aggravating game in the world. It is spreadsheets and emails. It will obliterate your marriage. It will destroy friendships.
And I love it so.
Spreadsheets and emails! 🔥🔥🔥
MATE, I love this pod and I'm a fifteen year FM player AND a long time supporter of Clayts, who you've used to introduce the game in this video. Worlds colliding. Totally awesome
I meant introduce will still. Still.
As a sleepless 70 yr old who's lost his Madden skills, FGC sounds like it would b right up my alley.
*FGM good start
@@jimadams8795 my one tip, if you give it a try, is that you can delegate responsiblities to your team and you absolutely should as a new player. Let your team coordinate training - there's always a little advantage to doing it yourself, but from a time investment perspective, delegations help the game move forward and new players can add those responsibilities back once they get the hang of the basics.
Play Franchise mode in Madden and simulate the games.
@@Bruss813 oh I've done that. I think this would b to Madden as the universe is to a rock
If you're sleepless already, you are the target audience.
I think as time goes on, games like Football Manager and Out of the Park Baseball continue to grow in popularity because of the stories you can create for yourself with them. I do the same thing when playing the NCAA games. The way that many of us learn of these games are these UA-camrs who are able to convey powerful stories about certain players and teams through these games. I know I would have never played NCAA Football if I never saw Not the Expert on UA-cam, and now i'm a full fledged NCAA freak, who never went to a school with a football team.
Out of the park is the same thing for baseball fans in terms of simulation have lost countless hours playing that
OOTP is REALLY close to FM. Very addictive.
Makes me wonder why the NFL head coach game never took off
Football manager is a role playing game that puts you in the middle of your favorite sport and surrounds you with realism that career mode/my gm players can only dream of
I'm in on this one. I play way to much FIFA, and watch some football manager videos. The Pentagon challenge 😅
How nuts is the impact of this game? Having played the first 6 or 7 versions of FM, my connection to this game is so absurd that I've actually purchased 3 of the last 5 versions, and Never actually played them. Why? The appeal is there, but so is that lingering fear of sleepless nights...
It's a serious consideration. I have a life! I need to exercise! Just as soon as I get through this transfer window.
Great work again Pablo & company played FM since the days of Cherno Samba and Julius Aghahowa, had to give up for for my gf now wife. 😂
Aghahowa and Isaac Okoronkwo. I was never as happy as I was when I had both those guys.
Pablo and Co! If you're looking for a game that directly relates to the competitors, you gotta do an episode on iRacing and how some of the best drivers have used it and its Sierra/Papyrus precedessors to earn chances in NASCAR.
Current NASCAR driver William Byron started his career essentially from the game. The awesome Rajah Caruth story has roots in it. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is an active member of the dev team. Max Verstappen Twitch streams while playing it. It's crazy, it's awesome.
Awesome episode. Form TRL to Football Manager, this show has it all.
I am a dumb american who knows nothing about soccer. I fucking LOVE these games. I love playing as some dogshit lowest division english team and importing some 40 year old brazillian to smurf on the entire league
Isn’t that the best? Just ruin the Vanarama National League with a man who’s never left Rio de Janeiro. The very best.
One time you should try playing a dogshit lowest division Brazilian team. Someone asked me for an interesting FM save after wearing themselves out in the usual European locations. I told them to try the lower Brazilian leagues.
They asked me how the schedule worked and I had to say "I don't really know, I've only been there six years."
@@mrbismarck I love the schedule part because it's VERY true. I have no idea how that works.
Europe: We get the summer off
Brazil: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Thank you for yet another great episode, which reinforces why this podcast is my favorite.
Will “Erik Spoelstra” Still
You could pretty much do the same exact episode with iRacing and William Byron and the way they’re using it for car and track testing.
Roberto Firmino was signed by German team Hoffenheim in 2011 after the Hoffenheim director of football discovered him on Football Manager. At that time he was playing in second division in Brazil.
Will Still is the Lawrence Frank of football
I'm sorry, but Lawrence Frank is the Will Still of the NBA.
Had never heard of this and dont think I really started to understand it until halfway through the episode. Wonder if its growing in the US. Great job Kyran, really interesting.
Shoutout to the originator OOTP
championship manager (FMs predecessor) predated the first OOTP by 7 years
i played quite a bit of FM20, i basically tried to build the USMNT in the prem
brilliant episode
Fantastic story yall !! Loved it ! #ptfo
This is a really cool story that I had no idea about and I’m glad I listened to this full segment. It also reminds me of my madden franchise days. lol smh
Fantastic episode
You can play as manager of the Philippines National Football Team, Pablo
this is such a incredible cross over for things im interested in lmfao
All the real ones remember Total Extreme Wrestling
This is really a great podcast
"It's a work thing" 😆
"Sure, Jan."
I love football manager, but I've never played it😂😂😂 i personally have always love Franchise/Association modes in 2k and Madden but im always disappointed in madden cause they stripped the depth it used to have. They are slowly bringing it back but i enjoy watching Zealand and other FM youtubers create teams and struggle with them
Will reached the "I'm too old for this shit" phase the moment those cameras came on for this interview. I wonder how much trauma bonding was done after this episode because MY GOD DAWG
So fun!
All FM fans running g there hands basically passing on another addiction
To see that madden was biting their style with head coach
I haven't played FM in years but just because I want to have a life..
That thing is crack
Any FM players that are like me and have reverted to the dots instead of graphics for matches?
Daniel Braathen! Orri Freyr Oskarsson!
How many hours do you have in your most recent version of Football Manager? For me I have 980.9 hours in FM24. Last played on March 8.
March 8? Slacker!
@@JonathanTully001 Yeah, Helldivers 2 took over, and then came Balatro.
Me 53 seconds into this video: "Oh no. This is the wormhole I thought It was..."
lollujo, I love you, but DAMNIT Hours of this game I have....watched!
It's the best/worst
spreadsheetmanager
Playing FM rn
Streets won't forget my 2007-10 NAC Breda team
I am currently in the 2043-44 season 😂
I love how Americans never know anything about the world outside of America and then they discover it and are like yo that's crazy. When's Pablo finds out about the FGC?
So one guy (Pablo) not knowing something about a certain game based around one of his countries least popular sports turns into "Americans", as in the entire 300+ million lot of us....
Ted lasso did it
Madden made it obvious the NFL could/should change to exploit spacing and speed WAYYYY sooner than the stodgy douche bags running the teams did. We had to watch them waste the likes of Mike Vick, Barry Sanders, and so many others that could have exploited the heavy, inside run game and outside pass game focused rosters and schemes of those days. Run and pass can both use the whole field, as they do more these days and on any Madden screen since the 90s.
Mmatl
soccer and spreadsheets...we OUT !
Pablo talks about FIFA but shows clips of EA Sports FC24, that is not FIFA. completely different title.
I've played 2000 games of EAFC, We all still call it fifa brother.
the players don't love this game b/c not all the players are allowed to be in the game
