Spurs fans look at the benefits, at least we got a HITC documentary and secondly it wasn’t a ‘What on earth is going on at Tottenham Hotspur’ 😊😊 (Add that to the trophy cabinet)
The most baffling decision to this day was sacking Mourinho days before the League Cup final. They basically sacrificed an opportunity to end their trophy drought for stupid reasons. They should of waited until after the final to decide Mourinho fate, had they lost, then sack him, had they won, keep him around for a few more months at least to see if there is an improvement in League form off the back of the Trophy win. What they did was one of the worst choices they could of made.
@@r4h4aldo you not think having the manager who is a serial trophy winner to pick the team, tactics and control the game would have been preferable as opposed to Ryan Mason who had never managed a game in his life when spurs were already the underdogs?
I was talking to a Wigan fan the other day (myself a Pompey fan) and we both agreed that we wouldn't swap our respective FA Cup wins and subsequent relegations for remaining in the top flight. Both clubs have been in serious trouble since those days but the high of winning the FA cup couldn't be forgotten.
Spurs have won the FA Cup 8 times & have never played in the 3rd tier of English football in their entire history as a professional club. Despite the memes & banter I'd still rather be in their position as opposed to Wigan's or Portsmouth's
Pompey and Wigan both went into administration recently, I wonder if at that time you had asked the same question you would have got the same response. It was by no means certain that either club would exist, although being fairly well supported concerns, it was of course likely that someone would come in with a rescue bid after ditching the vast majority of the debt. I wonder if those creditors too would have swapped those FA cup successes for their money back? Very easy with the benefit of hindsight to hark back to better times, safe in the knowledge that administration would end up being a mere inconvenience.
@InternetVegetable8541 @raquille1 you guys definitely did not understand the comment. He didn't say he'd swap Tottenham's entire history for Wigan's/Portsmout's. Just the 1 cup win for the 10-15 years in the top flight
@@Galstaf Of course, it's just a thought exercise. Why are you taking it so seriously? It doesn't need to be set in reality. It's just a comparison between 1 trophy and 10 years in the top flight, winning nothing.
6:40 Just to emphasize your point about Spurs' "Big Five" status in the early 90s: when they won the 1991 FA Cup, they actually set the record for the most FA Cup victories (8). That tally has since been beaten by Arsenal and Manchester United, equalled by Liverpool and Chelsea (who had only won it ONCE before 1991), and Manchester City are only one win behind them.
@@mza5817 True. I think that domestic cups no longer have the same weight in modern football than they did in earlier decades. Now they are a bit of a distraction to teams pursuing European places. Personally, I think that the FA and league cups should be limited to premier league teams that finished outside the top 7 the previous season.
Also came off the back of a decade where Spurs had won back to back FA Cups and a UEFA cup, had finished in the top 3 three times in ’85, '87 and '90 (in 86/87 Spurs were seriously challenging for a domestic treble) & had just broken the british record transfer fee to buy Paul Gascoigne. Spurs were definitely amongst the elite clubs of England at this point.

Saying it was Poch who made us a consistent top 6 club is not only false, but also incredibly disrespectful to Harry Redknapp. It was Redknapp who took us from the relegation zone to Champions League qualification in not even 18 months (also our first ever time qualifying for the UCL). From that point on we finished top 5 every year under Redknapp.
Big 6 not top 6, there is a huge difference. Newcastle and Leicester have consistently finished in top 6 in the league in recent years but are not part of the big 6.

I actually admire their ability to get to the stage where they are now very organically. It takes great players and little bit of fortune to be consistently successful, Spurs are well placed to do so with a manager for the long term, signing promising players like Vuskovic and Bergvall and growing revenue each year. The time for winning will come eventually.
I could not have said it better myself. I personally think that if Postecoglou is backed and that he stays for a long term, Tottenham will eventually go on a crazy silverware streak. Klinsmann on loan from Sampdoria makes you realise how hard they fell, there was a time when Sampdoria had the likes of Vialli, Mancini, Gullit, Pagliuca, Mannini, Pari, Vierchowod, Mihajlovic, Carboni, Briegel, Toninho, Jugovic, Atillo Lombardo, Montella and Angelo Palombo. How far they've fallen. Even they have won a European trophy more recently than Tottenham.
On one hand, italian football as a whole fell, Sampdoria fell within it as well. Also talent was a bit more spread out back then than it is today. Just do the same for Fiorentina, Parma etc.
@@clarenceonyekwere5428 yep, very true, in the case of Parma, Napoli and Fiorentina it was financial mismanagement though. All 3 of them went into administration.
It really is mentality. And I think we’re seeing it now with Kane at Bayern. He’s said how it’s “different” in Bayern…how losing even one game is a “big deal”. But *thats* how you win titles. In the words of Mourinho “When you start accepting defeats just because your team plays well…big clubs stop being big clubs” and Tottenham just never reached that mentality
I agree. It seems like the entire organization, from the top management to the players, is striving to be competitive, instead of winning every game, every season. I think that was what Antonio Conte was referencing in his final meltdown.

Spurs - much like Liverpool in some respects, and Everton too - had the worst sense of timing when it came to the dawning of the Premier League era. If the Premier League had begun in the 1980s, the notion of 'The Big Five/Six' would be more recognised for the fluid idea that it always was. Instead of Man Utd and Chelsea, you'd have had Everton and Forest. Tottenham also had a poor sense of timing in regards to their renaissance in that it happened just as Man City were being super-charged financially. All clubs found it hard enough to compete during the 'Sky Four' era, Man City joining and quickly surpassing that group just made it all the more difficult. Under the 'bad luck' ledger, I think 2016-17 stands out. A points tally of 86 would have covered the vast majority of 1990s Premier League winning teams - for instance, Mad Utd won the title in 1997 with 75 points and a G/D of nearly half Spurs' effort in 2016/17. And they didn't just win the league that year, they won it by a clear seven points ahead of Newcastle. Arsenal won the league the following season with 78 points, Utd won it in their treble year with 79 points. Becoming English champions is more difficult now than it has ever been, Leicester City's miracle notwithstanding. Part of Spurs' fans gripes with ownership is that they didn't capitalise on momentum at the time and finance a couple of signings when Poch had the team purring. The stadium move, while ultimately beneficial, probably happened at the worst possible time too in a football sense - again, that poor sense of timing. The 2019 CL Final was also one of those days when you knew that it wasn't in the stars. Having a marginal penalty awarded against you in the opening minutes of the game really sucks the air out of the occasion.
Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers were able to win the league and a domestic cup, they aren't oil clubs and have been in far less cup finals than tottenham. Stop making excuses for perrenial failure.
@@helicoptersrkool Blackburn won the league when they were close to the biggest spenders, but rage on. My observation was broad. If you can point to a particular year or competition that Spurs 'ought' to have won, but 'choked', I'm all ears.
On the one hand you have to respect how organically those Spurs teams of the late 2010's were built. On the other, you have to agree that Tottenham are only considered a "Big Club" because they play in a super modern stadium in London and make a ton of money. Being a money-making football club in one of the (if not THE) financial centers of Europe and having a major rivalry with Arsenal that is now competitive in the wealthiest league in the world really can't be overstated from a revenue generating standpoint. But you don't get a trophy for finishing top 4 and that's certainly more of a priority for Levy and ENIC. Problem is that I think that type of mentality permeates through the club culture and by extension the playing squad. Look at Real Madrid; if they make it to the Champions League Final everyone (including them) knows they'll win because, well it's Real Madrid and it's the Champions League. I think that lack of winning mentality and a culture of profits over trophies is more to blame for Spurs not winning anything than bad luck or poor timing.
Honestly as a spurs fan i can truly say that getting a whole video from hitc 7 dedicated to us is a trophy in its own right...and thats the depressing part.
How is that a shock to you? Levy doesn’t invest in football and sack the managers who can’t win for him under his cheap way. I have stoped buying anything from Spurs as long as Levy is around.
Class video, I was fearing the worst but it basically explains where we have actually come from and how we are in a better place to challenge in the future. We’ve organically become one of the supposed big 6 and as a fan who has seen relegation battles in my lifetime I’m looking forward to see what can be achieved in the future
I have the curse of being both a Pittsburgh Pirates and Spurs fan. Both of which are run as organizations the same way - Make The Money, first, second and always! Winning titles is well down the goal list. Daniel Levy = Bob Nutting.

Haha I have the curse of being both a Phoenix Suns and Tottenham fan 2 teams that are remarkably similar in having a lot of success, but not winning titles
Plain and simple. We've got an ownership handicap. Our owners have done the maths and worked it all out, that as a return on their investmant, aiming to actually win the trophies is not a better financial return for them than just being in the mix .
Very very simply and succinctly put in the video. The club isn't there to win trophies. Its there to make money for Enic. That's all. Look at the lack of investment when Pochs team needed one or two players to really challenge. And net transfer spend is low. We also fail to pull the trigger on players like Fernandes who we were linked with for ages. Lost coint of the amount of targets we fail to buy and bigger clubs swoop in and take them. There js also the "jam for tomorrow" transfer policy. Jed Spence and Bryan Gil anyone? We buy four or five players at 15 to 20m and hope one sticks who we then sell for massive money a la Bale. We sold Kane. Not replaced. We should have had a replacement lined up. Ee never had any intention of replacing him. Can you imagine a big club doing that I cant. I repeat. The club is merely a business. Its not run to win things. Simple as that. A per the videos initial synopsis.

Very good video, thank you.. If this has been the Levy plan all along and that he has now put the club in the position to be realistic possible winners of the big trophies, then its safe to assume that we will see evidence of this in next summer's transfer window. From here on in, there can be no excuses to not build a squad that can possibly win every competition that Spurs are in.
Was annoyed at first when I saw this, but you did an excellent job with putting everything into context. It makes no sense to me that when Man City, 🎉the richest club in the world, put their tickets up 5% this week ,nobody even said a word about it. But Spurs put up their tickets for the first time in 5 years and everyone loses their shit. Not that agree with the horrific high ticket prices,I don't. As you said many clubs in the PL have long trophy droughts, but generally they deflect that fact by mocking Spurs. Not that we should be happy that we've lost so many finals and semi finals, but they were mostly lost to better teams with higher wage bills and more transfer spending. Now there is a chance to break that cycle with the young exciting players at the club, with top talents like Bergvall and Vulsovic to still arrive. Hopefully Levy and the board stick the landing by finishing the squad with some top class additions next summer.
Ownership is Everything in Football & unless they are willing to buy high priced Stars the club is not winning any Trophies...... this is why I'm shocked we have so many brainless younger Chelsea supporters who fell for the con artistry of the crooks who recently captured our club & sold these dummies the dream that we're going to buy 2 dozen 18 y/o's & they're all going to grow together & dominate the League in 7 yrs - which of course is Never going to happen.... in fact, we've got a much better chance to be relegated than win any Silverware under current ownership
Who is this 'everyone'? No one gave a shit about Spurs prices outside of Spurs fans. Just like no one cared about Arsenal raising their prices outside of Arsenal fans, obviously. Why would they?
To be fair, when it comes to consolidating your financial position for future success, Tottenham has really been the most successful club in the Premier league. I say this as an Arsenal fan.
As a big Spurs fan and HITC Sevens fan, I’ve been waiting for you to tackle a Spurs video for years now. Like almost all your videos, I think you did a great job Alfie. Thank you for all the quality content.
Aside from the (genuinely humorous) jokes we all make about Spurs not winning everything, or Spurs fans themselves agonising about it, see how their record since around 2009 or 2010 has been so solid otherwise: Multiple Champions League knockout stages A Champions League final appearance(2019) 14 of the past 18 seasons - top six finishes (as mentioned in the video) Harnessed some of the best players of different positions in our generation - whether it be Kane, Bale, Son, Lloris, Eriksen, Vertonghen and Alderweireld Surely fans of let's say Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa and Wolves must be quite envious of that. Or for that matter Wigan and Swansea too, they may have won a trophy each in 2013 but look where they are now compared to Spurs...
Because he's a wanker and should've been sacked ages before. Levy just realised that in the very very slim chance he won that final it'd be harder to sack him. Silly timing as it should've been done after that disgrace of a showing in Zagreb but absolutely the right decision.
I know I’m 5 months late but reason why tottenham haven’t even won a trophy is because Danny levy can’t manage the managers It sounds stupid but he can’t promise the manager a good player or a good budget Look at man United, although the glazers are horrible they still give the budget to get some trophies , same can’t be said about Chelsea though, champions of europe 3 years ago and in the conference league But levy doesn’t do any backing for ange, he gets a good season and then becomes small club after that, barely to no improvements It is like ea but I hope we get a good owner with good money
Kat Lucas, a Spurs journalist, made a good point on the podcast Football Travel by Outside Write in that you have to compare Spurs with teams like Aston Villa and Everton instead of Chelsea and Manchester City on terms of lesser revenue and historical significance. As an American Spurs fan, I think it's better to support a team that can match its football results with its financial revenue; you might win the league one season and get relegated the other (look at Leicester). Appreciate the insightful video Alfie. P.S. It'll certainly be nice to see Ange becoming the first Spurs manager to spend a full season in the Spurs dugout since Pochettino in 18/19.
There's some great use of images in this episode. I particularly like the '12 man' Manchester United champions League team photo and Wayne Bridge consoling an upset John Terry.
Arsenal has only won ONE (proper) European title; the Cup Winners´Cup in 1994. The Fair Cities/Inter-cities Fairs Cup trophy the won in 1969/70 wasn´t an UEFA competition. It was organised and ran by "some FIFA executives". Initially a cup competition only open to cities that hosted trade fairs, but from 1964 they invited teams according to their league position. It is well worth noting the following: While the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is generally considered to be the to the UEFA Cup, it was by UEFA and ran under different regulations; consequently, the confederation .
In the modern era only Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United ever win trophies. There's been odd exceptions such as Leicester, Swansea and Wigan. But those teams dominate finals and trophies. Has to be down to mentality, they got rid of Mourinho just before the league cup final which says it all. I would also argue lots of mid table teams could really go for it in the cups but just field weaker teams. The executive decision has been made to preserve top flight status over a cup run which is sad. Would you remember that season when you finished 14th and won nothing or 18th, went down and won the FA Cup.
Tottenham's misfortune and bad luck has been a long running joke. They even made it as a line in a Chas & Dave song with the now classic and unfortunately accurate "Tottenham Hotspur couldn't get one in". I say this as a lifelong Spurs fan
Speaking as a non Spurs fan, I have to say there is plenty to be positive about. A well run club with a large supporter base, and a fabulous new stadium. Try being a fan of Reading FC with a disinterested owner responsible for the liquididation of a club in Belgium and Thailand. They may not exist next season.
It's also important to remember that Spurs fought near bankruptcy for most of the '90s, right after the Premier League was formed. This set the club back a great deal and it took up to the mid noughties to put the club back to a safe financial footing.
When Spurs last won the FA Cup in 1991, they arguably won it, in one of the last seasons, it was a big deal for all clubs, from top to bottom. Eight years later, Manchester United thought the FA Cup was that valuable, they withdrew from the competition to participate in a Club World Cup. And the FA Cup has been on the backfoot, ever since. When Spurs last won the UEFA Cup in 1984, the competition was almost on a par with the then European Cup - with more high calibre clubs in the competition. Spurs were never a ‘league winning club’, they were a cup winning club. A similar club to Chelsea in the years leading up to the Abramovich takeover. The FA Cup and UEFA Cup were the two competitions they looked to for silverware. Not even the League Cup was taken as seriously - a competition that didn’t increase on stature, until English clubs were banned from Europe in the late 80s, and top clubs needed to hype it up to recoup lost revenue. Both the FA Cup and UEFA Cup are highly devalued now. Especially as you get a CL spot for finishing 4th, now possibly 5th. Not for winning the FA Cup. Moreover the Europa League, is now a glorified qualification competition for the Champions League itself. It’s the European Super League Championship division,. Tottenham are now a club content qualifying for the UCL. That’s now their raison d’etre. Even if that means winning no silverware. There was always a risk that once the UCL was reformed to include four clubs in 1999, a club like Spurs would have happened. And if it wasn’t Spurs, it would be a similar sized club like Everton or Villa.
Man. United didn't withdraw, the FA took them out, because the FA has the arrogant stance that a club representing England and Europe in the Club World Cup isn't worth accommodating one or two matches from that club in the cups. Just ask Liverpool about it, as well.
This is probably more articulately put than I could try. I’m from the eighties so it was all about the FA Cup for me. We have never been marathon runners - more cup sprinters when it mattered. It no longer matters. We need to reinvent ourselves as marathon runners and that could happen based on financial foundations and a change in mentality
@@_Ali. “devalued“ trophies are the only trophies Arsenal seems to win. - They won the Fairs Cup just before it got replaced by the UEFA Cup/Europa League. - They won the Cup Winners Cup at a time when the final was being played in half empty stadiums & only a few seasons before it was scrapped entirely. - Arsenal only started winning the FA cup more regularly when teams no longer cared about it. When clubs like Portsmouth, Wigan, Cardiff, Stoke & Hull City were getting to FA Cup finals - they last won the league when their closest rivals were starting players like Eric Djemba-Djemba & David Bellion, Liverpool were nowhere to be seen & Chelsea still had Ranieri as manager. Arsenal are like the grim reaper of trophies. Anytime they win something, that trophy is either about to die or the competition is laughably weak.
@@John_Smith_101 exactly. It was never going to be a popular decision but utd's hand's were kind of tied at the time. England were bidding for the 2006 World Cup at the time, and the Government and FA advised the club to go to the World Club Championship (or whatever it's called) as it may help their bid with FIFA, as skipping it or sending across a very weak squad filled with youth players and some backup squad players wouldn't please FIFA. So when the FA gave Utd the option of just skipping the FA cup that year, it made the most sense. As Ferguson was quoted as saying at the time (taken from an article on the Independant website : "We had to think of the situation regarding England hosting the World Cup," Ferguson said. "No one wants to see them not get it. I dare not think of the criticism we would have received if we had refused. That was unthinkable - and that's a Scotsman talking." What makes it worse though is that England didn't win the World Cup bid and it went to Germany so Utd playing in that tournament meant fuck all in the end lol

They managed to somehow lose every important match. They also settled for 2nd place several times and lost 2 major decision on home soil when everyone assumed they'd get an easy win. It's been 15 years of shame, pain and overall embarrassment for their fans. I'm one of them. And I had to watch our arch-nemesis, Grêmio, bring both national and international trophies home while my team got demoted the second division for the first time since its inception. We got booted out of the Libertadores by Fluminense, a then average team with ZERO international trophies to their name. This year things are looking dire. Our team failed to win the local cup (it's been 8 years without a title) and barely survived through the group stage of the Sudamericana (LATAM's Europa League). We have one the best teams in LATAM and only lost 2-3 matches yet failed to impress anyone. Only in the Premier League era have Spurs not been successful. 2 Leagues, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 Cup winners cup, 8 FA Cups, 5 League Cups. They were always called a cup team.
I love this video, and I'm not a Spurs fan. From me it's only ever been a good natured ribbing when it comes to teasing Spurs fans, because I started watching football in about 2000 and their transformation has been incredible. They've got a seat at the table now, and I've never understood the serious mocking of their lack of trophies. Absolutely didn't know everything in this video, but fundamentally they've only been financially successful in recent times. When I think Spurs and trophies I think Jimmy Greaves and photos from the 60s. If they don't win something in the next 5-10 years it'll be a failure, and I'm convinced they should back Ange, but frankly while he rubs fans the wrong way Levy has done a fantastic job building that club up. And honestly they've been a fun club for most of the last 20 years with lots of ups and downs, heartbreaks and some big wins. It's the real football experience that someone who supports an always successful club doesn't get.
George Graham won them a trophy and a week before the FAC semi final v Arsenal they sacked him. One of those managers who always found a way to win. Reckon they may have beaten Arsenal.
Not a bad plan. Since being relegated from the Premier League in 2010 (and then twice more) Portsmouth have won League 2 and the EFL trophy. Currently first in League 1 now so might win that too!
They should've taken cup competitions more seriously during 2016-2019 period, they had their best squad in the last 40-50 years during that period but have nothing to show for. Even Leicester have a league and an FA Cup.
Fantastic video, however I can't help but point out the error in the grammar of the title. It should be "Why Doesn't Tottenham Win Anything?" As Tottenham is a singular object (in this case: a single team), you would use "doesn't" instead of "don't" when referring to it. Yes, there are multiple players in Tottenham, however the organization itself is singular, not plural.
This may be a hot take, but I think we're much closer to Chelsea losing their big six status than a lot of people think, and Spurs are in an excellent position to keep their big six status even when Newcastle make the jump. And the reason is simple: that stadium. Spurs did a very good piece of business financing the stadium via low-interest, long-term loans, and they're already reaping rewards via other events as Alfie mentioned in the video. Chelsea, by comparison, have squeezed every drop of value out of Stamford Bridge that they can, and their ability to compete in terms of matchday revenue with the other top clubs is simply down to absurdly high ticket prices, which are only sustainable if they continue to compete for trophies and finish in the top four. That is by no means a guarantee for the foreseeable future, and the long-term contracts that they are on the hook for could end up preventing them from being able to sell players on when they need to cut wages to meet future PSR figures. Spurs have so far been cautious when it comes to spending, but their long term prospects are much rosier due to their matchday income which is only projected to climb. And even if Chelsea think they're close to finding a new site for a stadium that can keep up with the competition, the new economic reality makes that very difficult. The post-2008 freeze in interest rates was an excellent time to re-finance or re-develop your stadium, and Spurs just managed to get their business handled before the 2022 squeeze and rise in interest rates. Chelsea are much more likely to end up in a situation similar to Arsenal, who had to arrange financing for the Emirates only a couple of years before the 2008 crash, where their new stadium bills cripple their ability to keep pace with the rest of the pack. Boehly and his consortium have deep pockets, but financing a stadium will make things so much more difficult, but they also cannot afford to stay at Stamford Bridge and will struggle to justify the ticket prices if they continue to finish outside of the European places. It's a tough spot to be. Honestly the best chance I see for Chelsea to keep their position is for the Premier League, UEFA, and the U.K. government to decide to drop the ban hammer on Man City. And hard.
lets be real here tbh big 6 clubs have their moments tbh sure arsenal finished mid table 2 years in a row out of champions league football for almost 8 chelsea have more money too but you could be right if they get done for like ffp or something
As a Spurs fan, yes the lack of formal silverware is a source of constant heckling from other teams, but I’m always mindful that it could always be a LOT worse: We’re a solidly upper-tier club who compete at the highest levels of the English game. We’re not at risk of relegation out of the Premier League, or dissolution like less fortunate clubs. We have one of the largest stadiums around. We can attract big name players to come to us through significant pulling power. And the Levy Administration might be annoyingly austere and penny pinching at times, but they’ve allowed Tottenham to grow as a club without the pitfalls of a grossly inflated wage structure like Man United & Chelsea, or becoming dependent on the cashflow of dubious sportswashing owners like Man City. Despite the lack of success measured in trophies and titles, Tottenham are a secure and well-run club enjoying good times, and it behooves us fans to appreciate that things are much worse for fans of other teams jn England and the world who don’t enjoy the same cushy conditions as we do.
Ronaldo:" I won 5 champions leagues and the 2 first major trophies in my country's history" Messi:" I won the world cup" Gareth Bale:" I won a trophy with Spurs" Ronaldo and Messi:" 😨
It isn't that hard to figure out. The only teams who have won things since Spurs last won something in 2008? Are the ones who have half a billion pound net spends (MC, MU, Arsenal, Chelsea) or have a good manager (Liverpool). Spurs haven't spent as much and can't attract elite managers. Of course the exception is Leicester who came from nowhere with great recruitment.
Although my club - Forest is much smaller - I imagine most Tottenham fans would trade our last 50 years for their own (?). Forest ; Champions of England - 1, Champions of Europe - 2 - League Cup - 4, European Super Cup - 1 ......in that time, Spurs have won 1 UEFA Cup, 3 FA cups and 2 League Cups. Of course, Spurs is a much bigger club......but we have our memories !!
As a Liverpool fan, I feel like that 86-point season is never given any credit. Most people don't view any non-individual achievements that are not trophies as achievements at all and would chalk Spurs not winning the PL in 2017 down to Spurs being "bottlers". Yes, the Mourinho sacking was inexplicable, to the point where it felt like Levy DIDN'T WANT to win a trophy, but Spurs have been on the up steadily for the past 15 years or so, (they did peak in 2017, yes, but they didn't come and go like other teams) and with the new stadium and Ange, who I rate, there is a lot to look forward to for Spurs fans.
yeah, because everyone is hyperfixated on trophies. The UCL Final run should also get more credit, even despite the contentious Llorente handball call and just luck
At this point, when you're a Spurs fan like me, you just accept that you're always going to be considered a joke. But I still support them regardless. And hey, at least we have more European silverware than Arsenal has.
Tottenham Hotspur are the Chicago Cubs of the English Premier League. But even the Cubbies finally won the MLB World Series. Spurs will eventually break their own curse and win something huge. And I am saying this as an Arsenal fan. Spurs will eventually win something and rub it in our face. But until then, they’re just Spursy.
Only in the Premier League era have Spurs not been successful. 2 Leagues, 2 UEFA Cups, 1 Cup winners cup, 8 FA Cups, 5 League Cups. They were always called a cup team.
If England / Gareth Southgate can continue to be praised for "making it far" then Spurs can surely also take some credit for regularly making finals too. Update : okay I made my comment before I saw Alfie make exactly the same comparison 😅
It's a bogus comparison though. There are so few opportunities to win an international trophy, and so much fortune goes into concerning form and fitness of players, and no one has control over one's pool of players. There's no selling the unneeded and signing to fill a key gap. With that in mind getting e.g top 4 in the World Cup is an achievement worth celebrating and remembering in a way that top 4 in the league isn't (barring a team punching hugely above their weight).
500m is old news they now can hold 30 events annually, this will increase revenue by at least 50% so that 500m will be 750m or more in a year"s time. Spurs is a cash cow for the two sharks at the top, who don't pay tax, are building a 30- storey hotel and have stopped pensioner discounts. Greed GREED AND MORE GREED
As a Spurs fan I love this video, 36min explaining how Tottenham being in their current position shouldn't be possible. In football history, Nottingham, Leeds, or Newcastle should be better... and it's a club that doesn't go out buy their success like Chelsea or Man City
As an American this is hilarious because our Spurs (the San Antonio Spurs NBA team) are the polar opposite of Tottenham. They are a small market team that puts professionalism over commercialism and is highly successful. They have won 5 titles over the last 30 years (the second most of any team during that stretch).
The primary reason Spurs never won anything under Poch's golden era at the club was a lack of investment EXACTLY when they needed it most. The timing of the new Spurs stadium was so unfortunate and possibly the most spursy event in recent memory. Back in 16/17 Spurs had an incredible first xi. They went undefeated at White Hart Lane and got a historic 86 points in the league. All they needed was squad depth and they could make a genuine title challenge. However, as Spurs stood on the precipice of success, THAT was the moment Levy and co decided to build a new stadium. As a result, Spurs went 2 transfer windows without buying a player and over the next couple years that incredible core of players gradually declined or left the club, never achieving the success they deserved. In a way, it's the perfect analogy of Levy's leadership. Trading short-term success for a stadium that will grant them strong revenue in the long-term
Well they'd been wanting to build the stadium for years and that was when they could. The construction of the stadium actually started in 2015 apparently so I highly doubt Levy and Lewis could have envisioned that they'd have an incredible team waiting to be capitalised on just 2 years later when the project is very much underway.
Chelsea's inability to move out of SB is going to cause major pain. Tottenham is way ahead of the curve on the new stadium. Handled it way better than Arsenal/Emirates as well.
This is a nonsense comparison, If Arsenal had moved into the Emirates at the same time that spurs moved into the Armitage Shanks, they wouldn't have needed to sing younger players a pay lower wages in the late Wenger era to fund it since the EPL money is astronomical compared to 2001 (when the process to move started). The money would've been there from the time of planning due to the revenue.
Football fans aren’t known for being reasonable, that is a given. But even by the low standards of reason that exist within football, Spurs seems to be an exception in itself that they just say. You’re big, win something or you’re shite. I’m a Spurs fan and so I know all about this and it just seems so fickle
Im American, and Ive been a tottenham supporter since 2009. When they come to America I go to the game. In my, I guess limited opinion, runner up in the champions league, the biggest game to determine the best team in the world (Europe) that season, will always be bigger to me than winning the FA cup or Caraboa Cup, or even the Europa league. I almost sure the whole no trophy statement is almost meaningless to actual Spurs supporters, Kinda like us caring about Arsenal. our games against Man City or Chelsea are way more important to us.

Spurs have won the FA cup 8 times lolz. I’d take winning the fa cup 8 times over winning it once and getting relegated.
Also the FA Cup was as prestigious as the league back then.

I actually admire their ability to get to the stage where they are now very organically. The time for winning will come eventually.

It sounds stupid but he can’t promise the manager a good player or a good budget
Look at man United, although the glazers are horrible they still give the budget to get some trophies , same can’t be said about Chelsea though, champions of europe 3 years ago and in the conference league
But levy doesn’t do any backing for ange, he gets a good season and then becomes small club after that, barely to no improvements
It is like ea but I hope we get a good owner with good money
As a spurs fan, loved this video! Hopefuuly good things to come

One of the best and that is some statement given the quality of your output. I would be very reassured if I was a Spurs fan
I know I am 😊
Definitely make the part 2 of the video Alfie.
I'd love to see the second Spurs video that you wanted to make but didnt have time for
When Jose got sacked right before the final I knew the reason for spurs eternal drought is the owners .
Yup, Levy will win nothing in football, just rich.
It is well worth noting the following:
While the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup is generally considered to be the to the UEFA Cup, it was by UEFA and ran under different regulations; consequently, the confederation .
Being a London club automatically doubles your size in the eyes of the media. Just look at West Ham.
As a Football Manager player a love seeing perfectly run club like Tottenham. I appreciate it as a form of art.
It’s Levy, not misfortune, he doesn’t invest in football, not wining is logical, not luck.
Great video Alfie as always 💯
So what you’re saying is Spurs devalued these competitions by winning them 😂
When clubs like Portsmouth, Wigan, Cardiff, Stoke & Hull City were getting to FA Cup finals
- they last won the league when their closest rivals were starting players like Eric Djemba-Djemba & David Bellion, Liverpool were nowhere to be seen & Chelsea still had Ranieri as manager.
That was unthinkable - and that's a Scotsman talking."
What makes it worse though is that England didn't win the World Cup bid and it went to Germany so Utd playing in that tournament meant fuck all in the end lol

Meet SC Internacional, a once great football club that hasn't won anything of importance since 2010!
They had a brief winning spree from 2006 (when they managed to beat Ronaldinho's Barcelona in the FIFA World Championship) to 2010. After those 5 magical years, SC Internacional failed to win at all.
SC is infamously known as a "Paraguayan Horse", which means it is always running as the favorite but ultimately wins nothing, always finishing in second place.
So yeah, I feel for the Spurs fans out there.
God knows we have suffered a thousand years worth of punishment already. But what we lack in trophies we more than make up for in passion.
Ours trophies will come on Thoroughbred's back.
*TL;DR*

Thanks Alfie. As a spurs fan. Your research for your videos always impresses me. And that is as someone who works in research!
Excellent as usual. I knew Birmingham City would get several mentions in here as well as their own recent HITC special about why the fans are so happy despite relegation.
Daniel levy got a 100million world record out of selling bale and managed to win nothing in 11 years. That's a flex
As a Spurs fan of 30yrs, seeing my team lift Two trophies in my lifetime, there's a few things, but, the Main reason is: Daniel Levy.
He requires nothing from the players and manager other than "just get top 4".
He's even been quoted saying trophies aren't that important but being at the top of European football is.. The irony in that line.
2nd, the washed up soft boiled bellied fanbase we have.
Years and years of seeing the same thing like Groundhog day, but our fanbase will Always say: "Wait till the summer/winter, I'm sure we'll get the players we need", and every summer, we don't.
We'll turn down the likes of Bruno Fernandes and buy Gedson Fernandes and sell him 1yr later because they wete 4th or 5th choice and because they were cheap or free transfer.

He never said that, he was asked is it a win if they finish fourth. He said "fourth is not a win". This sounds pretty painful because I am Iranian, and I have been watching Tottenham Hotspurs. Yet their performance resembles more of our country's miserable record. Alfie, when will you make a video about Iran's decades of football failure since 1979? We just could not go further in World Cup and Asian Cup despite our status as an Asian powerhouse and World Cup participant.
Well I just left this video with a massive amount of respect towards Tottenham

One mildly positive HITC sevens video, you'll never sing that
George Graham won them a trophy and a week before the FAC semi final v Arsenal they sacked him. One of those managers who always found a way to win. Reckon they may have beaten Arsenal.
Maybe Spurs should intentionally relegate themselves so they can at least win the championship 😭

They should've taken cup competitions more seriously during 2016-2019 period, they had their best squad in the last 40-50 years during that period but have nothing to show for. Even Leicester have a league and an FA Cup.
Best…. Thumbnail…. Eveeeerrrr!!!!
Still find it mad that the teams that left for the super league never faced any sanctions
Another entertaining and brilliant analysis - thank you so much: 👍👌👏!
Ronaldo:" I won 5 champions leagues and the 2 first major trophies in my country's history"
Messi:" I won the world cup"
Gareth Bale:" I won a trophy with Spurs"
Ronaldo and Messi:" 😨
Because their fans would rather stop arsenal winning the league than qualify for the champions league.
They are the definition of tin pot.
I’m looking forward to part 2.
I couldn't give less of a fuck I wasn't alive for any of that
Thanks Alfie!!! Great analysis🙌
Football in North London just works. Arsenal for the glory, Spurs for the memes. The world in perfect balance.
Go lower and pick Blue one for european pedigree
Chelsea had no pedigree before the stolen money, everybody knows they are tainted like city
There are plenty of Arsenal memes in recent years. Even last year.
Tottenhams ground is pretty nice, you can do another one of these in a decade

As an Arsenal fan, only by seeing the title I knew I'm in for a treat ❤
As a Spurs fan I love this video, 36min explaining how Tottenham being in their current position shouldn't be possible. In football history, Nottingham, Leeds, or Newcastle should be better...
and it's a club that doesn't go out buy their success like Chelsea or Man City
As an American this is hilarious because our Spurs (the San Antonio Spurs NBA team) are the polar opposite of Tottenham. They are a small market team that puts professionalism over commercialism and is highly successful. They have won 5 titles over the last 30 years (the second most of any team during that stretch).
Spend too much cash to build a stadium & too little cash to assembled a great team. No wonder a failure!
@@yourmum955 Oh yeah of course. But what I’m saying is the timing was just so, SO unfortunate for that group of players
European soccer is far to dominated by a few clubs. Why even bother being a fan of any of the lesser clubs
Chelsea's inability to move out of SB is going to cause major pain. Tottenham is way ahead of the curve on the new stadium. Handled it way better than Arsenal/Emirates as well.
Don't even place spurs in the same sentence as arsenal.
Arsenal are european minnows
This is a nonsense comparison, If Arsenal had moved into the Emirates at the same time that spurs moved into the Armitage Shanks, they wouldn't have needed to sing younger players a pay lower wages in the late Wenger era to fund it since the EPL money is astronomical compared to 2001 (when the process to move started). The money would've been there from the time of planning due to the revenue.
Now do one on how Arsenal in their more than 100 years of existence has no European pedigree.
Opinions?!?!
They remind me of the england national team always overhyped and expect to win everything before it's even begun.
