- They were raised to chug whipping cream and turn every meal into an all-you-can-eat buffet. But somehow, America’s most popular New Year’s resolution is most embodied by the extreme transformation of none other than offensive linemen. In retirement, these pioneers of gluttony have reverse-engineered themselves physically but also evolved mentally. And as former 315-pounder Mike Golic Jr. peels away the layers beyond the six-pack, with reflections from former colleagues Joe Thomas and Nick Hardwick, he reveals that sustainable personal change goes way beyond the weight.

Need a Part II on how retired running backs blow up when they’re done playing
Thank you for answering a question that I did not know that I want answered, but I did want answered after I saw former Bears linebacker Mike Singletary on a 49ers sideline around 2005 as a slim-downed version of his former NFL self. It was great having Mike Golic, Jr and "Fat Joe" Thomas on to take the audience inside to see and hear how linemen put on the weight, and how former linemen use workout habits from their playing days to shed the now unneeded weight.
It’s just after 5:00 am ET on January 2nd. I’m 30 seconds in and Pablo is trying to convince us that they recorded this on January 2nd. That was hilarious. Nice try PTFO! 😂 Love the show though. Never change
It was delightful to hear you on Unexplainable, Pablo!
“Mike Golic is 230 lbs” is going to be a motivational poster in my home gym.
Pablo has the most interesting and funny subjects.😂 Gracias!!
Haha surprised they didn’t cut to Pablo coughing everywhere on the Christmas episode 😂
I learned that PB&J sammies are undefeated
I didn’t know we were up to 72k. Wow, maybe this is becoming the biggest podcast! Hope you hit 1 mil this year.
the Masters jacket! lol
Such a great premise for a new years show
Great ep. Gojo has a great way with words.
100%! I need to seek out more Gojo content.
I think a major change in the physique of NFL offensive line occurred as a direct result of the rule change in 1978 that allowed O-lineman to extend their hands and essentially hold (as long as they keep their hands inside the shoulder pads). After that, the speed and balance of O-linemen took a back seat to having the largest and strongest (even if a lot of that weight is fat).
Golic jr. is so good, v happy he's a part of the PTFO universe!
One of the things that leads to the success of former large NFL linemen is that they did not yo-yo on the scale, but only added or maintained large weight numbers. When they decided to lose a lot of weight, their bodies did not fight against the goal, and was willing to reset the "set-point" of their metabolism more easily. But it was a great and informative podcast. Especially the sense of identity and the lineman's "best self" or which self do they dream as "fat kid" or the "new triathlete."
Finally, the photo of Joe Thomas with a ripped swimmer body was absolutely breath-taking. Simply breath-taking.
Cortez gonna get the Izzy treatment...gonna wish him happy new year in like June.

that’s señor bum to you 😎
I love this podcast but you need to start time blocking the topics for UA-cam or social media. It's too long for people to sit through an entire conversation, especially if they just want to hear a select topic.
I find this story kind of misses the mark. There are plenty of NFL big men who still struggle with weight. All this story does is portray O lineman having magic trick to lose weight but that isn't the real story. Its easy for top tier athletes who aren't big by their own natural habits to lose weight as the tools it takes to be a good pro athlete can be adapted to weight loss. People who play in the NFL but are prone to being overweight (of which there are many) actually tend to struggle the most post playing because their ratio Calories burned to Calories in spike massively in the wrong direction when they no longer are practicing for professional football. You should have covered both sides of the struggle.
41:03 He sights his father's issues with what you are saying
Didn't watch the whole thing, huh?
This Cortez guy isn’t really bad, he’s just there. Completely unremarkable. Weird choice as someone to put on camera.
