  • The story of the NBA cannot be told without Oscar Schmidt, the most prolific scorer in the history of the world. But that hasn't stopped our fellow Americans from trying to do exactly that. So today, with LeBron James on pace to break Oscar's record of 49,737 career points, Pablo travels to glorious Orlando, Florida and sits down with the legend who refused to play in the league, despite getting drafted. And we find out why Oscar's impact on basketball - like his laugh - still echoes through the game today.

For us brazilians, Oscar Schmidt "Holy Hand" is beyond a legend, he's together with our all time greatests: Pelé, Ayrton Senna, etc

@@TERRYKATHCHICAGOHe is BRAZILIAN. It is funny, when something goes wrong, we're purely Brazilians. But when something is outstanding we are Portuguese Brazilians (Senna), African Brazilians (Pelé), German Brazilians (Schmidt)... As far as we are concerned, Brazil, as a European colony, was older than the USA. But beware, John Wayne is not viewed as Scottish/ Irish/ English. Or Hemingway is viewed as English, from Yorkshire - from where his mother and father families came from. Both Wayne and Hemingway are viewed as very Americans, with some ancestors that came from Europe. On the other hand, the German immigration to Brazil started in the 1820s. It is a lot of time. More than two centuries ago. And the majority of those German immigrants mixed with other ethnicities. Some white Europeans (Italians, Ukrainians, Russians, Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, Armenians, Jews...). Some not (Native Americans, Africans, Japanese). Some that were already mixed. Schmidt himself is also Bezerra, from his mother's side, which is a very common family name in Northeast Brazil (Nordeste), where he was born. Bezerra is of Portuguese origin, but in Nordeste almost everyone is of mixed stock. Therefore, his mother is probably from Portuguese and Native American stock. Anyway, it is due to this large community of descendants - hard working people, including the Germans - that some regions in Brazil are relatively wealthy. (That is why ex-Nazis were attracted to South America. Not the contrary).
