What 'Freedom Of Speech' Really Means To Dana White And The UFC | PTFO

- At a time when so many are struggling with the regulation of expression, from Elon Musk's X to college campuses to the workplace, why did mixed-martial arts, of all things, rebrand itself as America’s leading bastion of free speech? Ariel Helwani, the sport's preeminent journalist and host of The MMA Hour, traces an evolving policy - from getting censored himself to a homophobic rant going viral - and explains how UFC boss Dana White has made a fortune in the name of “freedom.”

@@mr.brenman2132 It is removing his free speech. That is literally censorship. I don’t begrudge them; they are a company and they have an image to protect. If a fighter is making disparaging comments about said company (even if they are completely true) on their own platform, I understand they suppress that. But that is censorship, no two ways about it. And it is something else than fining Nate Diaz for using a slur; that is free speech having consequences. Also something I don’t begrudge them for.
But it is laughable to suggest that anything goes or that they don’t censor their fighters. Because obviously they do. All the time.
somehow a media company sponsored by a betting site is producing the best journalism in sports. There is zero chance this conversation airs if these 2 dudes work for ESPN

Ignorance is bliss and hypocrisy is a disease
Protecting the fighters' status as independent contractors and limiting pay, to hang onto the 80% of revenue they currently take in, is the reason for the free speech switch up.
It's the illusion of freedom: You have all the right to say whatever you want, just as long as you don't talk about your pay.
this is the central lie for "innovator/disrupters" of all stripe. Divided we maximize profit at the top, Rinse and repeat.
So tell me, how much did francis ngannou make in UFC? He already made the biggest payday ever and about to make his 2nd biggest payday ever.
The UFC is not good for the fighters. To call them independent contractors to me at least means they can organize their own outside business endeavors. If a contract restricts that, then that means they aren't independent contractors
Ariel brought in all the Jew communists I see

I have followed UFC for over a decade. The NYTs stories on the ins and outs of MMA by Draper have been very good. “Free Speech” only applies to government actors. Telling someone “hey, you represent my company, I don’t want you saying all of that it’s embarrassing” is, quite literally, not an infringement on your rights. Public accountability and backlash is one of the bedrocks of our society. You’d think those “free speech” activists would acknowledge that but it doesn’t fit their narratives.

You people who think this way just cant handle the fact that some journalists who cover MMA just want to cover MMA. Not all the nonsense WOKIES care about. Like who can we cancel today who doesnt suck up the ass of the left?
I agree but would say the same for Ariel. Ariel's hate for Dana has eroded any trace of journalistic integrity he may have ever had. True journalism is dying if not dead and not just in sports.
People are gonna come for you for exposing this. Not saying they’re right or wrong, but be prepared.

Free Speech only and ever has meant that the government can't put prior restraint on your speech.
Otherwise, speech has always had consequences attached to it, both social and sometimes legal, after the fact. This is the simplest thing in the world and they should be called on it every time they try to say that "free speech" means speech with no consequences.
Straight facts
Okay, how does that relate to this interview? You think doing journalism and reporting facts should have the consequences that Ariel has had to deal with?

I believe this is in reference to the words and action of Dana White. Atleast, it makes the most sense from that perspective.

Exactly, everyone with a brain knows the free speech line is a lie. They have no interest in free speech when it challenges them but want to use it as a shield when they are challenged.
@rickyboombotz8420You’re rationalizing to confirm your bias. If Aaron Rodgers were to not be resigned by the Jets or any other team because he espouses conspiracies, but Fox News signed him to a $20M contact, he was still cancelled. I wonder how much freedom of speech Dana White will allow the fighters to have if they was talking about creating fighters union or organizing a strike.

Dana doesn't kick media members out for being critical. He calls them out. What Ariel did was fucked with something Dana was trying to create a surprise to the fan base over. Awesome episode
This was really outstanding work by both Pablo and Ariel, and perhaps more importantly, a much needed history of the hypocrisy behind this newfound notion of “you can say whatever you want”. This is a sport that took a LONG time to gain legitimacy in the public eye-almost going bankrupt, the importance of unified rules, making the product more palatable to the casual observer, etc. Ariel is far and away the best journalist in the history of the sport, and to attempt to silence him only tells part of the story. Newer MMA fans may like the brash approach Dana has, and outspoken fighters like Sean Strickland may resonate with a select fanbase, but pointing out that it hasn’t always been this way is absolutely crucial in understanding why it’s laughable that we’ve gotten to this point. Great work.
This needs way more views
Lol funny the group of people complaining about being told to “shut up and do as you’re told” are the same people who told athletes to “shut up and dribble” at the height of the BLM movement. Also Cash is King ! Is the moral of this story 😂

The answer to "what has changed" is that they used to accept the shifting of the window of allowed speech and chose to operate within the new parameters but have now realized that the ratched only moves one way and have decided to push back to move the frame in which they can operate.
What's changed? Conor McGregor; Donald Trump; MAGA, and the sport itself is now mainstream. Now it's all about what sells. Freedom of speech, let alone doing what's "right," has NOTHING to to with it.

11:42 they miss the point that it is allowed for Dana to change his views on freedom of speech. You mature and learn. Also, his new stance is a reactionary stance against the new cancel culture etc.
“Everyone is struggling with how to regulate speech.”
Don’t regulate speech. People are allowed to be wrong. People are allowed to learn and grow through experience. That’s the beauty of life. Yes, it can be uncomfortable, but overcoming discomfort is how we develop courage, and courage is what allows human beings to find meaning.
Strickland is the one uncomfortable with a question about what he'd do if he had a gay son so he lashed out and asked if he's gay and tells him he has no backbone. There's literally zero amount of courage in that so not sure what you're talking about
The difference with dana white now is he feels indispensable because he has money now and back then he felt he needed the media .oh and his ego is much larger and I am not a casual ufc fan for the record.

I'm not a fan of Dana or UFC management at all. I used to respect Ariel's journalism work. In the last few years though, Ariel has shown his true colors and I don't respect him at all. in the last several year, the emergence of this "woke" ideology has shown us what's what and Ariel embracing cancel culture and using his platform to make unfounded accusations of racism, discrimination, etc. told me its time to stop paying attention to him. The signs were there, his whole career he's been a professional victim...gotta stop ignoring red flags.
Doesnt change the fact that Dana is a hypocrite. Are you going to address that?
First time running into this channel thank you algorithm, you guys killed it 🫡
The only reason Dana has flipped is because things have gone so far to the left. I am a big spiritual person and you learn we live in a duality so everything in reality will always return to balance, therefor change like this will happen but if you not into that you could say the ufc is way to big to fail compared to back then.

Not to be a dick or to come off rude, but NASCAR was actually one of the first sports back right about the same time as the UFC came back. Just irks me that every time someone brings up this topic NASCAR always gets pushed to the wayside. They worked incredibly hard to figure the logistics of making all the races and fitting in races from the few weeks they had shut down. Really impressive stuff imo as they had to work around the parameters of every state/ venue rather than just being able to isolate on a personal venue that will cater to your regulatory needs bc the owners of said venue run the fuckin country and are literally invested in the success of your company.
Plus it’s a huge amount more people to have to accommodate even with no fan attendance bc of the size of each crew. A lot harder to work out the logistics of having 500 dudes to work out the logistics of keeping distanced, testing etc.
Two of the best in this media space
To answer Ariel and Pablo’s question of “what has changed?” In 2013, 14, 15, they hadn’t “made it” yet. They were still owned by the Fertitta bros. They’ve been bought out, are a billion+ dollar company, so Dana and his friends cashed out. That’s why he doesn’t give a damn now
