I think the best argument against having a Sound type is that the majority of Normal-type special attacks are sound-based moves, so retyping them all will effectively destroy the Normal-type special movepool.
Pretty easy fix, some psychic moves became fairy. They just made new fairy type moves as well so they didn’t entirely cull another types move lists. Pretty easy fix. Just make more new moves for both normal and sonic type.
Many years ago, I used to entertain Rubber as more of a joke than anything serious. But as I've thought about it again and again, refining the idea of it and reconsidering what kind of Pkmn and powers it would related to, it's genuinely become my favorite new type idea. I'm still not completely happy with Rubber as a name, but Dusty got it right away that it's not supposed to be literal rubber. To add to that though, it's not just about the elastic properties, it's also about having some kind of non-porous protective layer or skin (which is a reason it resists Water, and Poison/Grass), and with a type concept like this, there's also the offense side to think about (in this case, constriction is the classic means of attack of the Rubber type). Also, I know you're not focusing on the competitive aspects, but another factor that makes new types exciting to me, is that they can get to be distinct from other types ON THE TYPE CHART. Putting together a refreshing combination of weaknesses/resistances while also trying to have some kind of "logic" behind it AND try to improve balance of the type chart rather than make it worse, is a big part of the fun of theorycrafting new types. For example; with a Wind type, people will often call it redundant because AS A CONCEPT they see it as being too close to Flying. But in my mind, if the defensive strengths of Wind types are that they resist "weather" (drastic shifts in temperature and humidity), making them resist Ice, Water and Fire, that is an incredibly exciting idea, which in action of gameplay would feel NOTHING like the Flying type
As much as I would like a new type some day I don't think we need one. Besides, some of the more popular ones don't really make sense since most of them are already covered by the other types. Sound is already covered by the Normal-type since making sounds is a normal thing most animals do. Fairy is basically already the Light-type since a lot of Fairy-type moves has to do with light, although Electric also covers some of that. Magic is basically already Phychic, Fairy and Dragon-type since a lot a Pokemon of these types have a magical theme to them. Space/Cosmic is also the Phychic-type, like Beheem, Cosmog, etc. Air/Wind is also covered by the Flying-type. And you can argue that Shadow is already covered by the Ghost-type, since some Ghost-type moves have the word shadow in them and ghosts are shadow-like. I just don't really see any of these types being added, but if they can find one that makes sense I'm all for a new type.
I've thought about Light ALOT. I think light has more of a connection to Bug and Ice than the others. Moths are attracted to lamps and thick Ice and Snow can block out the Light
Dunsparce should have always been Poison or Normal/Poison cuz its based on the Tsuchinoko which is a poisonous yokai. Also Spiritomb should have been Rock/Ghost, its 108 spirits trapped in a rock who cares if they were all evil, give it a dark aura.
Psychic is based off alchemy is why its magical mystic and otherworldly. And if any new type comes sound would def make most sense and be a favorite one for me too.
Time and space are the same thing guys. (Theory of relativity) and because of that they can both be described as ridged or fluid depending on which aspect of space or time you are referring to. Time specifically can be sped up or slowed down according to speed or gravity. You can change your time zone. In the US we practice daylight savings time. There are so many examples of time being fluid. Anyway Both time and space make the best cases for something cosmic IMO as it defines the cosmos itself 🙃 can’t have one with out the other.
It amazes me that no one ever mentions the possibility of Ponyta and Rapidash being Normal/Fire. Not only would Normal STAB be great for them, they fit perfectly within the traditional "beige mammal" design of Normal Pokémon. It just seems like such a blatantly obvious type combination for the two of them.
Re: "some people saw Fairy coming" It was one of the egg-groups since Gen2. ...along with Dragon, Bug, Grass, Flying, Ground, Water 1/2/3 (or as I prefer to call them, Amphibious/Aquatic/Marine...god I wish we had official egg-group names) You know what's also an egg-group? Amorphous or formless. HMMMMMMMMMMM #RubberTypeJustGotReal
Before I even hit play I have to say just seeing the thumbnail made me go "OMG, an episode about THE pkmn topic I've probably spent more time thinking about than half the fandom combined???!! Nice" ..and then I checked the description to find that there's links to some of my infographics 😊. OH BOI IDK WHERE THIS WILL GO but I'm sure I'll be writing some more comments down here in the coming hours XD
I think it would be cool if, in another timeline, Paldea's story would be something like this. Creating artificial types with the crystals of Terapagos. Imagine a villainous Team Star. Stars are both Light, Sound & Cosmic in their properties. Tera would make mons be that. Imagine Grunts having Volbeat, Noivern, Clefable, etc. that would be an insane concept. Imagine in Scarlet you have Light Types because InfraRed is associated with colour hues. And in Violet you would get Sound Types because UltraV is used in tele/radio frequencies. Cosmic Types would be for a 3rd version or DLC because Area Zero is alien to the region. Personally, I feel like the Rubber Type would be cool, but I'm a biased One Piece fan lol XD. I kinda want Let's Go Johto to do this now for Light Raikou and Sound Entei (volcano bark). Suicune would be Cosmic Crystal, in fact, it's a nice tie-in to Unown and the Ruins of Alph. Johto has no fossils, the Kanto ones are there, inb4 Walking Wake is a living Sinjoh fossil. Maybe the mons Ho-Oh ressurected were all part Dragon and were immortal like Relicanth.
Soul spotting Noiseon 🚨 Yeah, I tried to mimic Gamefreak's idea of hijacking the eeveelution concept as a tool for getting Pokémon fans sold on a new type. It was such a perfect idea when they did that for Fairy!
What about this kind of ”hidden type” addition to Pokemon. It is not an actual typing with weaknesses and resistances like the others, but some Pokemon have it and have some special attributes to them thanks to it. Like Sound type on Exploud, gives ”stab” to Sound type moves and gives resistance to sound type moves, maybe immunity to things like sing. Or light type, either deals like 25% more damage with any move to some specific types like dark but also take more damage from them, or types like Dark take some damage every turn (akin to solar power damage or something) when in the field with a Pokemon with the hidden light type. Some of these effects are already a thing in moves abilities etc but those, as well as so many other new effects couöd be created with something like this, without having to think about type chart balance etc. What do you guys think? And do you have any similar ideas after reading this, what other effects could be possible?
To throw in a bit of my own opinion of Cosmic: I see Cosmic as a gritty sci-fi type. where, it's not that it is supernatural in any mystical sense, but it's "super"natural in just being about the extremes of nature, physics, reality. It's about the most extreme almost abstract environments (from pure vacuum to hazardous forms of radiation from celestial bodies) and about powers that are on the edge of reality (like warping space and manipulating gravity). I also see it as... the way Flying is superior to Ground, Cosmic is superior to Flying.
Before I forget, re: PYROAR. It's not just the name, when the Litleo line was added, Noble Roar was its signature move, and I always interpreted its surprising SECONDARY Normal type as a way to give it STAB for Echoed Voice and Hyper Voice, both of which it learned by level up. So like... yeah including Boltund on the Sound graphic is just me trying to make Boltund less boring in any way possible, but Pyroar is one of those absolute top priority Sound retcons whenever I think about that.
Given the state of the world we need a digital type. Some examples for retype would be the porygon line and a computer rotom. This would also open up a whole new opportunity for designs incorporating modern technologies into the series.
Wrote this before I got to the part where you guys mentioned exactly this, great minds! I think digital would work much better for future designs rather than a retyping function.
I know this opinion maybe old hat but I think Sound being part of Normal is too baked in at this point. Apart from a chunk of mons being taken away by the Fairy type I think Sound being made up of vibration is an explanation of why it's Normal. Like Gravity it's a just an application of a type of natural forces. Also as for my 2 cents if Cosmic type exists I think it would be funny if Normal types either resisted it or outright was immune to them. Just the idea of something so outside of the scale and scope of reality not being to effect (or not as well) the mundane I think is fun.
Light is the only type I can see them adding. Sound based moves are already in the game, and it just wouldn’t make sense for things like bug buzz and toxitricity and the like. Cosmic just doesn’t make a lot of sense, like we don’t have a forest type, we have bug and grass. Its whats in those environments that make the pokemon not the environment itself. If something is from a space asteroid, its a rock type, not a space type. Magic is also just too convoluted I think. Magic uses the elements in its attacks, so there is no point in having a type like that. You can make an argument for pure magic being something special, but I think thats too limited to be an actual type. Light is definitely covered by fairy to a certain extent, but there can still be a very distinct difference between light and fairy. Fairy is about magic and cuteness while light is about both physical light and divine justice. There are also just a lot of pokemon that can get the light type. A bunch of fighting types like the swords of justice, electric types like lanturn and xurkitree, and fairy types like xerneas. I’m open to criticism
Fsiry was brought in to help buff the under whelping types like steel and poison. I think fairy should have buffed ice, bug and grass. Just thinking like tinkerbelle and other fairies are kind of seen as assisting mother nature and bugs so why not have grass and bug resist fairy. And with ice, it just seems like magical properties not being able to break hard solid ice wall.
If there's one idea for a new type that I like is what I heard in Tyranitar Tube video: a new type that only exists in a specific game, like a new type as a regional gimmick. ??? type or omnitype for Terapagos, than in Gen 10, let's say based on China, it's 3 main legendaries of new Commie, Gun and Camera types (btw, gun type makes sense), than in Gen 11 it's again the usual 18, ???, omnitype and, idk, Curry type, cos it's India.
I think a lot of confusion about which types are necessary and which are not is caused by the wrong idea of types being what a pokemon is, while they actually are more of which battle properties a pokemon has. Rock type pokemon are not made of rocks, you can clearly understand that just by looking at Onix'es weight - a giant rock snake that weighs like 200 kilos or whatever the exact number is. If it was real rock just its head would've easily been 1 ton or more. Instead, Rock type means the pokemon behaves like rock. It's trong (resists breaking), but also brittle. You hit it with a soft paw - you break the paw. But when you hit it with a bamboo stick - it schaters, hence Grass and Fighting weakness. That's also the answer how pokemon can have coverage moves: something like Mew can sometimes sorta behave like Rock types when using Rock Slide, but it's ineffective at that, hence it doesn't receive STAB. You watched Kung Fu Panda? Some of the martial arts styles mimmicks birds (Flying - maybe that's why it's Flying and not bird: it's a battle behavior, not the essence of the creature), some mimmick bugs (Bug) type. Wonder why Flying is super effective on Fighting? Obviously, birds don't eat martial artists, it's just bird-like battle style is strong against some other fighting techniques that inspired Fighting type. Another important point is that types do have multiple inspiration. For example, Flying type's second inspiration - dragon type. I have an idea why fighting-Flying is weak to Ice (bird techniques require warmed-up joints for flexibility), but I have no idea why dragon-Flying is weak to Ice, but Flying shares that with actual Dragon type. Gyarados is Flying, Charizard is Flying, even the most dragony Dragon types are also part Flying: Rayquaza, Salamance, Dragonite, while more weird Flygon and Garchomp have different secondary types. Btw, I don't agree Lugia is a dragon, but it's a Flying type. Psychic is partially a radiation type. It's a popular theory that Unown is based on Hiroshima victims, and it's a Psychic type. Mewtwo is probably partially based on n*clear weapon, and it's a Psychic type. Deoxys - cosmic rays, Solgaleo - sun radiation. I also think that maybe the primary inspiration for a type is its battle properties, must probably correlate with offensive power, while secondary inspiration is more of an essence of the pokemon, like what the pokemon is, and should correlate with defensive properties. If we take Psychic again as an example, it's weak to Bug, Dark and Ghost. If you think what is believed to survive a n*clear explosion - it's cockroaches, evil doers and, well, ghosts. Going back to battle behavior. Rock is different from Ground and Steel is because they behave differently in battle. Ground type pokemon are more offensive oriented (hence lots of types it hits supereffectively), they throw like mud in you, burrow the ground beneath you, trap you, make you suffocate and lose orientation. Rock pokemon can only smash some rocks, throw into you and hope for best. Rock is more about defensive properties, hence early Rock types were all secondary Ground types. As for Steel, I believe it's basically an armor type, and is associated with slow movement, being heavy, not hitting very hard, but being able to tank lots of hits. So, basically, if you think of pokemon types like martial art styles and less like biology of pokemon, they would make SOOO MUCH MORE SENSE
"Spearow, Ekans etc. could have been Dark type" MEWTWO! Always my fave choice for something I feel strongly should've gotten retconned in gen2. It's as close to a meaner evil clone as it gets.
You guys are saying a new eevee lution in generation 10. I'm working on a video that show all the clues in scarlet and violet that we are getting a new eevee lution in one of the dlc. I'm pointing more towards the indigo disc. Because the students in their tie in with it. I just haven't figured out which type we are getting. It looks like it might be ghost or flying
I'm not a big ocean person, but I get why Lumi likes it so much. Seashore is a very sunny and relaxing place with all the sea life. One of my favorite thing about the original anime is how much sea in it. Like all those Krabbys and Gyaradoses. Like, real life water is scary with all the jellyfish and sharks, and in Pokémon sea routes are safe, full of people to hang with, is always sunny and calm, and is just super pleasant, super relaxing.
There's no going back after Terapagos, either they would have to retcon its art, which is silly, or provide us an explanation, which is something they never do. But yeah some of the types you mentioned make sense, it would be better to see those rather than an accomodation of new design concepts through dubious reinterprations of older types.
Now for the type effectiveness Magma would be supereffective against grass, bug, steel weak against water ice and ground but neutral to everything else. Sound is strong against dream for obvious reasons and its self and neutral to everything else unless there's a Space typing for Deoxys and Palkia in which case would be another weakness. Dream will be strong against Poison and Ghost and Psychic but weak against Sound and Dark
Ok, I really need to delete my old versions of my fake types, so that only the new ones get found XD I thought it was unfortunate that I haven't managed to make my Gen-9 takes on fake types yet, but some of the images that made it into this aren't even the most recent ones 😭xD
Guys, how about rainbow typing and no typing. Rainbow typing would work depending on the area if your in a water area, it would change to a water type. If they are hit with a water type. It would be super effective against the rainbow pokemon. The no type would be the opposite
One big point I want to add in defense of the Rubber type: (Dusty touched on this already:) these infographics are meant to show that a type concept is already somewhat represented BEFORE introducing entirely new Pokemon of the type (and IMO that is one requirement for any new type this far into the series). Obviously if it did become a real type, there'd be a whole bunch of new Pkmn that are much more direct and basic representations of the type as well (just look at how XY added a dozen or so very simple Fairies, instead of just slapping the type on some old mons). I don't know how much experience any of you have with other RPGs that have monsters in them, but in a significant number of them, the "basic slime/jelly blob monster" is a huge staple as the weakest monster you encounter early on; specific examples are Slime from Dragon Quest aka one of the most influential video games of all time, but one I was personally most familiar with is the Poring and its many varieties in Ragnarok Online. It's like the Caterpie of RPGGs with a Fantasy setting, and I feel like it would be fitting if Pokemon had a more direct reference to this trope lol I always feel like the name "Rubber" is still often a big distraction in discussions about this kind of type (I wish I could think of a name that would be better...). But another main purpose of showing existing Pkmn in an infographic like that, is to SHOW what the type is about, which makes a comment like "only three of these suggested Pkmn work for it" slightly frustrating XD because the way I see it, is that the trends in the given selection should be the source of "what is this type about", rather than just going off the name and then dismissing the selection because it isn't all literal rubber creatures or something. So, optimally, looking at the selection of potential Rubber candidates, what I was hoping would get noticed is things like how there's multiple slugs, squids/octopi/eels, snakes, and then a slew of what are basically tentacle monsters.. I feel like there is SOMETHING there that's connecting these kinds of creatures (squishy/stretchy/slimy, with some protective layer), where it would make sense if they had some similar resistances and weaknesses because of it. Another way I see the Rubber type, is as a counterpart to Steel. In the sense that they're both highly physical and defensive type concepts, but whereas Steel tanks punches by ultimate hardness, Rubber tanks them by the opposite, just absorbing/deforming as a response without taking much harm in the process. I like the way you noticed Wobbuffet as a solid candidate, because it's the perfect example of this aspect!
Yup. The NAMES of types are inaccurate, vague or even misleading. In a way, types actually somehow represent MORE specific things but also a wider range of things than one would suspect, at the same time. And that's something I love about Pokemon
That said, I do not think that the inaccurate names are a BAD thing. Basically, the way I see it, each type has a name that is a very simple basic word that even a small child can grasp. In addition to that, I think type names just need to not be taken literal. More often than not, a Pokemon of a type, will have PROPERTIES of what the type is named after, rather than literally physically BEING the type. So a Steel Pokemon doesn't even have to be made of metal, let alone specifically an alloy called steel (which is a blend of materials within a certain ratio), they can simply have Steel-like properties (like being extremely durable and tough (also note how that isn't necessarily a property of all or even most metals on the periodic table)).
I don't really get why you guys say steel was balanced with the introduction of fairy. Yeah, it didnt resist dark/ghost anymore but it got a resistance to fairy and is super effective against fairy. So 2 buffs and 2 debuffs. Fairy and Dragon are two of the three best types alongside steel itself. So to resist both of them and hit dragon for neutral and fairy super effective is really valuable. Steel has arguably been the best type in the game before and after the rebalancing imo.
This is going to end up as a bit of a rant, but regardless: Personally, the biggest reason I would be against adding a new type, is that 18 is just a good number… Especially in this game where threes matter (The starter trio, legendary trios, other type trios like dark, psychic, fighting, etc.). HOWEVER! I would love to add more types. If for nothing else, it can add a lot to designs / allow more pokemon to be created for a certain design. People say sound isn’t needed because its covered by normal, but how many pokemon would currently be a sound typing? Like 15-20 out of 1008?? The same thing goes for types like cosmic/space, bird and air split, etc. And my biggest objection to people who are against adding types: it really wouldn’t make the game that much more complicated any more… I think the biggest opposition I hear to adding more types is that adding a new type adds a lot more needless complexity through needing to remember an increasing number of type match-ups. My counter argument? Remembering them isn’t that big of a deal anymore! Back in the earlier generations, I could understand, where you physically had to remember they type matchups and the type of your opponent. But now-a-days, it tells you *before you decided on a move* whether it will be immune, not very effective, effective, or super effective. And you can cross-check that with ANY other pokemon on your team. So the memory / complexity isn’t really an issue anymore because the game just gives it to you, theres no memorization required beyond… “Should I add this move to my move set, I’m already strong against this, this will allow me to be strong against that.” Tl;dr - I like the idea of more types (preferably ending the total as a multiple of three), and I don’t think memory / complexity is a reason to be against it.
Preemptively - this will be longer than my original post. Additionally, but completely separate to what I said before (Completely ignoring type-matchups because I don’t really do competitive, and don’t know whats strong or not…) heres a bunch of types I think could be in the game or should be changed from how they are currently: 1) ‘Grass’ should be called ‘Plant,’ its a bit late for them to change it, but it makes more sense. (Maybe even split with fungi at this point, but I can see reasons not to.) 2) ‘Steel’ should be called ‘Metal’ same reasoning as Grass. 3 & 4) ‘Ground’ should be ‘Earth’ and include ‘Rock,’ and ‘Rock’ should be replaced with ‘Crystal.’ Allowing for more crystalline/gem pokemon to be added. 5 & 6) ‘Flying’ should be split between ‘Air’ (as an element) and ‘Bird’ (aka normal flying). It makes sense because of how many pokemon there are with that type, as well as that bird would likely have the ice and electric weaknesses, while air would not. 7) (Completely understand why someone would say no to this, but…) ‘Water’ could be split to be ‘Water’ (as in the element) and ‘Fish’ as in the very common troupe of water types. It would just allow the oceans to be more organic than just all water types, similar to how bird would allow air to act more as the element than just flying. 8) ‘Fairy’ should split to be ‘Fairy’ (as in what it *really* is now) and ‘Light’ (as in an element? I guess, but more importantly to be an opposite of dark typing). Again, allows for more diversity in pokemon designs. 9) ‘Dark’ should split to be ‘Dark’ (as in the element / representative of TRICKERY) and ‘Demonic’ (or probably a better name) (as in EVIL). Again, allows for more diversity, but also allows for there to be a proper evil type, rather than dark and ghost kind of being all encompassing… Additionally, this could be like an end game type triangle (Fairy > Dragon > Demonic > Fairy). As fairys/heros always slay the might dragon, the dragon is strong enough to keep the evil demons in check, but the demons are foul enough to trick and deceive the hero. 10) Sound, you guys covered it well, it just should be a thing. 11) ‘Beast,’ I’ve heard a few people mention this, but with the others I’ve mentioned, I think it fits. It would likely be a split off from normal, and would be for more beastly normal types. Moves like bite, or pokemon like Khangskhan or mankey. While normal more directly means things taken right out of our world (I’m looking at you wooloo.) This is about where things get much less thought out: 12) Some kind of artificial type. I feel like it would be something that makes a lot of sense as the pokemon world progresses, and more pokemon are human built, maybe they are built to weather the elements? So strong against the base fire/water/earth/air, etc. 13) Some kind of ancient typing. Both as a duo with the artifical type as well as for pokemon that are meant to be old and or powerful, maybe it could esentially be a god typing… 14 & 15) Some kind of Cosmic typing it makes sense as they are so many from space… But if you have Cosmic it could also make sense to make it a duo with Time (Maybe Chrono so they are both ‘C’s’). This also makes it so both the god of space and time get a new type together. 16) Lastly, for this part, Fossil. It would be cool to see a type specifically for them, given I want to remove rock. But it could also work as a gimmick (like shadow pokemon from XD Gale of Darkness) where they slowly grow out of it, and unlock their original typing. Maybe only after its evolution? Or it could be like a form change sort of thing? From here it just gets more insane (aka types I’ve heard but haven’t give a lot of thought to): 17) Horror - just some kind of type that would allow for ACTUALLY scary pokemon to exist, rather than, again, dark and ghost doing all of that work (and poorly as all of them are cutesy now-a-days). 18) Rubber - Makes sense, I could see it, just don’t know what I think of it really. 19) Other gimmick or regional typings that are kind of one off, but would kind of have to be featured in every game. Like: Mythos, Food (Though I don’t like the idea of the food typing…), Energy, Rainbow, Nuclear (Like from pokemon Uranium) etc.
And to just end this off, I definitely wrote a lot more than they would ever introduce… I just want to point out, the first ten are really what I *really want* to happen.
Last remarks, I’m surprised, but you guys surprisingly hit most of the things I mentioned (especially the main ten I care more for). Especially things like the Grass should be called plant, or whatever. Also, as Dustygogoat mentioned, you can really split types into three categories. I have always called them elemental (Fire, water, grass, etc.), creature (bug, dragon, ghost, etc.), and the others, which I called archetypes, or them style the pokemon use (fighting, psychic, etc., even normal). But thats something else I tried to even out, as it currently split where there are like 11 elemental types, and then 3 and 4 of the others respectively. I also feel like if they got that split even, THAT is where I might start to suggest going into third typings, however I would probably never fully agree to that.
For me I would also alongside the new typings introduce some pkmn having third typings along with new evos for old pkmn and new pkmn through breeding from 2 different ones similarly to phione. For me I have Magma, Sound, Dream. Pkmn like Magmar,Groudon,Typhlosion Camerupt Volcarona, Heatran, Volcanion primary typing would be magma. For Sound its anyone whose lore/origin is somehow involved with sound so Jynx,Exploudred,Audino,Excadrill Meloetta And the bat pokemon because of Echo. For Dream I have pkmn whose lore or well being is based around sleep/dreams I.e snorlax hypno musharna Darkrai Cresselia slaking dusknoir technically if you want to consider the afterlife.
Steel isn’t actually naturally occurring. Iron is. And you need to mix iron with a certain % of carbon to make various kinds of steel. It’s a very human driven and curated process. Hence artificial typing
Glass, wood, and light should be the new type in my opinion. If they make sound type, some normal moves will be missing and they probably won't get special types for normal besides hyper beam.
Shadow is another one where they can incorporate ideas from those 2 console games and have something similar to the megastones something like Cypherite which is a held item use in battle that changes the moves and type of the pkmn to Shadow with the abundance of moves from Colo and XD and much like the stones theres a select few that can undergo the transform ation
Sound and light type are the ones that make the most sense. Rockruff and Lycanrock need to be pure ground type! Shouldn't have been rock. If not give it the ability 'solid rock' Or... Change up the rock type so it's not so nerfed by everything 😅
"some unexpected old mons got Fairy" YES! People often get so skeptical and resistant to "slapping a new type on an old Pkmn without super justified reasoning", but I instead see new types as potential to make some existing pkmn more exciting by essentially gaining a whole new elemental layer to them.
Fruit type Every Pokemon with fruit on it or is fruit like amoonguss cherupi etc. They could have like a healing buff be weak to elements everything except like fairy psychic fighting types which aren't elemental
The Dark Ball was so cool. Would've been cool to use more like during the second Mewtwo movie Also remember the first movie basically having an advanced Snagam poke ball with Mewtwo catching owned Pokémon and Pokémon while in the owner's poke ball Imagine if based off of tech from Orre region Sound type is most likely though think current 18 should be the final typings ever Sound because have been making more sound based Pokémon, Abilities and Items recently Can't believe mentioned Rubber type but no Breloom who ate the Gum Gum fruit and can stretch its arms MANDJTV would agree with getting rid of Drowzee just to be free of the memes Furret should be Ground type to honor Salvador's rare Groudn type Furret in the Silver Conference 😂
I get Dusty's point that we don't NEED anything, cos it's just a game. My personal problem with introducing a new type is that my favorite type, Psychic, has long been s*cking a*s. I don't want a new type, I want Psychic to be the strongest type again. If it's achieved with introduction of a new type - fine, just please don't change pokemon that we already like as they are. Like, Fairy was kind of needed cos there had been designs like Clefairy that had that something mischievous and extraterrestrial to them and didn't make much sense as just Normal types, cos Normal itself had changed a lot since Gen 1 and 2 and no longer had that additional theme of quirkiness and no longer fit the likes of Clefairy (Azumaril though makes perfect sense, so does Gardevoir as pure Psychic)
Worst part about this podcast is the anti-feline remarks! Cats are awesome and so are cat mons. Considering buying a soulsilverart HP shirt over Lumi and Dusty 😮💨
Cosmic makes some sense. Sounds makes more sense. I'm sorry Soul, but the Light type is a terrible idea imo. Its too easily already covered by fire, electric, fairy, even psychic. If there was an anti- Dark type it would be the Holy type and please do not ever. 😅😂

He just like me fr
Dunsparce should have always been Poison or Normal/Poison cuz its based on the Tsuchinoko which is a poisonous yokai. Also Spiritomb should have been Rock/Ghost, its 108 spirits trapped in a rock who cares if they were all evil, give it a dark aura.
Yes
Psychic is based off alchemy is why its magical mystic and otherworldly.
And if any new type comes sound would def make most sense and be a favorite one for me too.
This is the best Pokemon podcast bar none.
LMAO Dusty desperately scrolling the entire Bulbapedia page on Absol hoping to find the Fairy type somewhere
😂😂
Light,Cosmic, and Sound all are cool but honestly I feel like it be another eternity before we get a new type again.
Re: "some people saw Fairy coming"
It was one of the egg-groups since Gen2.
...along with Dragon, Bug, Grass, Flying, Ground, Water 1/2/3 (or as I prefer to call them, Amphibious/Aquatic/Marine...god I wish we had official egg-group names)
You know what's also an egg-group? Amorphous or formless.
HMMMMMMMMMMM #RubberTypeJustGotReal
Before I even hit play I have to say
just seeing the thumbnail made me go
"OMG, an episode about THE pkmn topic I've probably spent more time thinking about than half the fandom combined???!! Nice"
..and then I checked the description to find that there's links to some of my infographics 😊. OH BOI IDK WHERE THIS WILL GO but I'm sure I'll be writing some more comments down here in the coming hours XD
Thank you for your contributions and all these comments! Will read them all (and potentially respond in a video)
Wurmple is definitely a top tier first stage Bug but I honestly couldn't tell you why I enjoy its design so much
Soul spotting Noiseon 🚨
Yeah, I tried to mimic Gamefreak's idea of hijacking the eeveelution concept as a tool for getting Pokémon fans sold on a new type.
To throw in a bit of my own opinion of Cosmic:
I see Cosmic as a gritty sci-fi type.
where, it's not that it is supernatural in any mystical sense, but it's "super"natural in just being about the extremes of nature, physics, reality.
It's not just the name,
when the Litleo line was added, Noble Roar was its signature move,
and I always interpreted its surprising SECONDARY Normal type as a way to give it STAB for Echoed Voice and Hyper Voice, both of which it learned by level up.
So like... yeah including Boltund on the Sound graphic is just me trying to make Boltund less boring in any way possible, but Pyroar is one of those absolute top priority Sound retcons whenever I think about that.
Temtem made the digit type work really well, very similar to dragon now.
Not necesseraly a new type but I would like to see Normal be re-defined as "undetermined" or "typeless" - Do not expect this to happen
"Spearow, Ekans etc. could have been Dark type"
MEWTWO!
Always my fave choice for something I feel strongly should've gotten retconned in gen2.
It's as close to a meaner evil clone as it gets.
33:20 I nominate Spinda for the erase-list immediately.
Just realized, me and lumi have the same taste in Pokémon types
Ok, I really need to delete my old versions of my fake types, so that only the new ones get found XD
I thought it was unfortunate that I haven't managed to make my Gen-9 takes on fake types yet, but some of the images that made it into this aren't even the most recent ones 😭xD
Guys, how about rainbow typing and no typing. Rainbow typing would work depending on the area if your in a water area, it would change to a water type. If they are hit with a water type. It would be super effective against the rainbow pokemon. The no type would be the opposite
One big point I want to add in defense of the Rubber type:
(Dusty touched on this already:) these infographics are meant to show that a type concept is already somewhat represented BEFORE introducing entirely new Pokemon of the type (and IMO that is one requirement for any new type this far into the series). Obviously if it did become a real type, there'd be a whole bunch of new Pkmn that are much more direct and basic representations of the type as well (just look at how XY added a dozen or so very simple Fairies, instead of just slapping the type on some old mons).
I don't know how much experience any of you have with other RPGs that have monsters in them, but in a significant number of them, the "basic slime/jelly blob monster" is a huge staple as the weakest monster you encounter early on;
specific examples are Slime from Dragon Quest aka one of the most influential video games of all time, but one I was personally most familiar with is the Poring and its many varieties in Ragnarok Online.
It's like the Caterpie of RPGGs with a Fantasy setting, and I feel like it would be fitting if Pokemon had a more direct reference to this trope lol
I always feel like the name "Rubber" is still often a big distraction in discussions about this kind of type (I wish I could think of a name that would be better...).
But another main purpose of showing existing Pkmn in an infographic like that, is to SHOW what the type is about,
which makes a comment like "only three of these suggested Pkmn work for it" slightly frustrating XD because the way I see it, is that the trends in the given selection should be the source of "what is this type about", rather than just going off the name and then dismissing the selection because it isn't all literal rubber creatures or something.
I like the way you noticed Wobbuffet as a solid candidate, because it's the perfect example of this aspect!
rock ground could be mineral tipe, cosmic = galactic maybe, alse mecanical type could be a thing, like magerna or magnamite
This is going to end up as a bit of a rant, but regardless:
Personally, the biggest reason I would be against adding a new type, is that 18 is just a good number… Especially in this game where threes matter (The starter trio, legendary trios, other type trios like dark, psychic, fighting, etc.).
So the memory / complexity isn’t really an issue anymore because the game just gives it to you, theres no memorization required beyond… “Should I add this move to my move set, I’m already strong against this, this will allow me to be strong against that.”
Tl;dr - I like the idea of more types (preferably ending the total as a multiple of three), and I don’t think memory / complexity is a reason to be against it.
Preemptively - this will be longer than my original post.
Additionally, but completely separate to what I said before (Completely ignoring type-matchups because I don’t really do competitive, and don’t know whats strong or not…) heres a bunch of types I think could be in the game or should be changed from how they are currently:
1) ‘Grass’ should be called ‘Plant,’ its a bit late for them to change it, but it makes more sense. (Maybe even split with fungi at this point, but I can see reasons not to.)
2) ‘Steel’ should be called ‘Metal’ same reasoning as Grass.
While normal more directly means things taken right out of our world (I’m looking at you wooloo.)
This is about where things get much less thought out:
12) Some kind of artificial type. I feel like it would be something that makes a lot of sense as the pokemon world progresses, and more pokemon are human built, maybe they are built to weather the elements? So strong against the base fire/water/earth/air, etc.
13) Some kind of ancient typing. Both as a duo with the artifical type as well as for pokemon that are meant to be old and or powerful, maybe it could esentially be a god typing…
14 & 15) Some kind of Cosmic typing it makes sense as they are so many from space… But if you have Cosmic it could also make sense to make it a duo with Time (Maybe Chrono so they are both ‘C’s’).
From here it just gets more insane (aka types I’ve heard but haven’t give a lot of thought to):
17) Horror - just some kind of type that would allow for ACTUALLY scary pokemon to exist, rather than, again, dark and ghost doing all of that work (and poorly as all of them are cutesy now-a-days).
I love this discussion. The discourse around if we could ever get a new type is always so exciting and engaging.
Great work, as always, guys!
King Nido! I completely agree.
Awesome seeing you here!
With types like cosmic, light, & bird even only apply the type the move not the pokemon
As a youngster I always wanted a mist/smoke type but poison kinda takes those types of mons. Fav type always will be steel though
Steel isn’t actually naturally occurring. Iron is. And you need to mix iron with a certain % of carbon to make various kinds of steel. It’s a very human driven and curated process. Hence artificial typing
Interesting discussion, glad I clicked on your video 👊🏻
Thanks for watching! Hope you become a weekly viewer 💫
Glass, wood, and light should be the new type in my opinion.
If they make sound type, some normal moves will be missing and they probably won't get special types for normal besides hyper beam.
Fairy is the worst type. Undeniable (design wise)
We need a food type for all the food Pokémon that’s weak to only munchlax and snorlax.
Great episode fellas
I did kind of like the battle mechanic in Legends Arceus, I always wonder why they never added it to Pokemon SV.
Great video! I would love for there to be a Sound type in the game, shake up things a bit again for everyone
And I think grass so b immune to ground just to add more immunities to pokemon
Sound and light type are the ones that make the most sense.
Rockruff and Lycanrock need to be pure ground type! Shouldn't have been rock.
If not give it the ability 'solid rock'
Or... Change up the rock type so it's not so nerfed by everything 😅
My favorite type is Dragon type! Dragons are the coolest.
"some unexpected old mons got Fairy"
YES!
People often get so skeptical and resistant to "slapping a new type on an old Pkmn without super justified reasoning", but I instead see new types as potential to make some existing pkmn more exciting by essentially gaining a whole new elemental layer to them.
Sound should be called: Sonic Type
Sound type is the only type i can see them adding. Everything else is a stretch
Fruit type
Every Pokemon with fruit on it or is fruit like amoonguss cherupi etc. They could have like a healing buff be weak to elements everything except like fairy psychic fighting types which aren't elemental
i think slime type works better than rubber
The Dark Ball was so cool. Would've been cool to use more like during the second Mewtwo movie
Also remember the first movie basically having an advanced Snagam poke ball with Mewtwo catching owned Pokémon and Pokémon while in the owner's poke ball
Imagine if based off of tech from Orre region
Sound type is most likely though think current 18 should be the final typings ever
Sound because have been making more sound based Pokémon, Abilities and Items recently
Can't believe mentioned Rubber type but no Breloom who ate the Gum Gum fruit and can stretch its arms
MANDJTV would agree with getting rid of Drowzee just to be free of the memes
Furret should be Ground type to honor Salvador's rare Groudn type Furret in the Silver Conference 😂
Am sorry no matter how you wanna spin it.
Fairy Type is basically Light Type
Digital type
2nd this
Dusty 😊 no type as a new type for arceus and terapagos.
I want 2 new types to round out to 20 types
Worst part about this podcast is the anti-feline remarks! Cats are awesome and so are cat mons. Considering buying a soulsilverart HP shirt over Lumi and Dusty 😮💨
SOUL ARMY UNITE 💥
Cosmic makes some sense. Sounds makes more sense. I'm sorry Soul, but the Light type is a terrible idea imo. Its too easily already covered by fire, electric, fairy, even psychic. If there was an anti- Dark type it would be the Holy type and please do not ever. 😅😂
