the song is about the very real "little shack" outside the city limits of La Grange, Texas. it was known as "The Chicken Ranch" because during the depression, customers would pay for "services" with a chicken. it was immortalized in a movie starring Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds.
"The best little whore house in Texas."
La Grange mean "The Barn" in french if you didn't know.... it put a other fun layer on the story!!
1844 to 1972 (Damn you Marvin Zindler!)
@@jean-rochdion4898 I do JRD!😉
@@jean-rochdion4898 actually, i did not know. see, even an old geezer like me can keep learning. thank you!
He was one of Jimmy Hendrix's favorite guitarists back in the 60's. Legends
Search for the "Moving Sidewalks" to hear how talented they are.
That would be Billy Gibbons on lead guitar. I heard the real ZZTOP twice in the 70s. Check it out, you'll like it a lot more. 😎👍
Fun fact: ZZ Top are known for their iconic beards. The only member without a beard was drummer Frank Beard.
Robin Trower was another great 3 man group!!!!
@@greg2976 Grand Funk Railroad and Cream. Great 3 piece bands.
That's right!! 🤣
Didn't know his last name was Beard that is wild.
@@musicairplanes4884 👍
It's always amazed me how much sound that could come from a 3 piece band. I saw them 5 times never disappointed. Nation wide would be a great song to react to. RIP Dusty Hill
I only got to see them once. They were co-headlining with Lynyrd Skynyrd. ZZ Top closed the show. Skynyrd must have had 15 people on that stage, with all their extra guitarists and backup singers. The Tres Hombres came out, just the three of them, and filled that arena with music just as impressively.
" T.V. Dinners "
I saw the Afterburner Tour outside at Legend Valley. The first half of the show the stage was the dash of a Car with the Drum riser on the top of the "Radio", the the 2nd half after it got dark the Black lights came on and it was a Cockpit of a Spacecraft, great show.
@@marke8323 that tour was me and my late wife's first date. February 29th leap year
@@warrenburlingame1172 Great memories, sorry for your loss my friend.
I got to meet them years ago. They were playing at the Missouri State Fair in the 90's. The night before they were scheduled to play, they got bored sitting around their 3 Star hotel in Sedalia Missouri and walked across the parking lot and signed autographs in from to the Walmart. The were just chilling.
Lol I saw them at the Illinois state fair in the 90s they were so great...started raining and they kept going. When they spun their white fuzzy guitars you could see water flying off. Billy rubbed his hat and said I love it when its wet and they played another 5 or 6 songs
FYI that man was 73 years old for that performance. The band is a legend!! These guys have been hot since I was a baby and I was born in 1961.
Billy Gibbons has said they wanted to name the band "BB King" but the name was already taken. Here's what he had to say about his famous hat: "These are examples of works of fine textile expertise, woven by members of the famous tribe from Cameroon in Africa, the Bamileke," Billy explained. "Before you can wear the hat, you've got to learn how to make it. And before you can wear it, you've got to be considered a prestigious member of the community. I got lucky and upon visiting Cameroon, I got escorted over to see the Bamileke and I was wearing a Texas cowboy hat. And before the chief came around, I got the elbow and they said, 'Hey that's the chief. Give him your hat.' I said, 'No, wait a minute. Chief, I'm from Texas. We do a little horse trading on these matters...' (Laughs) So he got a nice 10-gallon Texas hat and I walked off with the famous Bamileke hat."
ZZ Top is no doubt, undisputed one of the coolest band and people there is
Can't count the time I have seen them in concert. Always fabulous!
one of the greatest underappreciated guitarists of our time.
Yes he is. when people talk about the greats they seem to forget about Billy.
The Chicken Ranch (1905-1973) - RIP.
It not only inspired ZZTop, but the 1978 Broadway musical and 1982 movie, "The Best Little Wh_reh_use in Texas.
Cheers to that "home out on the range!"
is it about the worlds oldest profession , yes , just think of how lucky everyone was that day that was at Howards show to witness a once in a life time event
Girl you are battin 1000 today , great choices and you really get the music and the soul behind it. You've very quickly become one of my favorite all time reactors.
...... Edit : Billy Gibbons ( Singer and guitarist ) is one of the coolest most laid back people in the world, just a really good guy. and yes 100% the song is about a little "fun house" on La Grange .
Agreed. She's the best, coolest reactor. Just discovered her.
Billy played a very scary Father-in-law on 'Bones'. Great fun. He was also Hank's cousin on King of the Hill.
You should do the studio version now....ZZTop is one of the all time best classic rock bands
Yes it is about what you are thinking. This is what they call Texas blues. Made famous by the three kings and Stevie Ray Vaughan among others
@@randygibson2801Johnny Winter before Stevie and ZZ. Johnny was a headliner at Woodstock.
“Is this song what I think it’s about??” 🤣🤣
ZZ Top has that “thump”. One of my all time fav bands. 65 years young here. AC/DC yep another one. The music from this era just cannot be beat.
Santana at Woodstock started his raise to fame .
77 pushing 78 and still lovin' ZZ Top!
I saw them liv here in Noway on a small scene . Simply fu...n AMAZING show . ZZ Top and BILLY Gibbons ARE the real deal . That little band from Texas .
There was a musical made about the Chicken Ranch... the movie version starred Dolly Parton and Burt Reynolds (amongst others) called 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' That sound track is LOADED with reaction gems......
The house featured in the movie is about a mile from property I own in Pflugrrville, Texas, just outside of Austin.
Billy G is a student of the classic roots of blues. He always teases that his career is built on just three chords, but he is so much more complex than basic blues. It warms my heart to see our younger generation discovering and enjoying ZZ Top - your reaction makes me happy! You nailed it when you said they are "vibing out". I remember their concerts in the 70s and the vibe was real and true. Rest in peace, Dusty.
Their motto for decades basically amounted to: "Same 3 Guys, Same 3 Strings". These guys were the living embodiment of the philosophy "Simplicity Makes Perfection"...and, yes, the song is about a brothel.
3 chords
And now, unfortunately because of the circumstances, the need for a fourth member after 55 years. I don't know if I handled the sudden change and constant turnover.
Legends for over 50 years. Simply known as Just a little ‘ol band from Texas”. Top invented Texas Blues.
Billy Gibbons (guitarist) was Jimi Hendrix’ favorite guitarist!
I'm as big a ZZ Top fan as anybody, they did not invent Texas blues. I guess you've never heard of blind lemon jefferson who live and die before any of ZZ top where born.
@@diverdown631 T-Bone Walker too. And truth be told. Dusty's brother Rocky was a rival of Steve Vaughan's...for a little while at least he was a rival. Stevie was from Oak Cliff....and T-Bone used to live there too. Stevie's big brother Jimmie was picking the blues before Stevie. I like the Top, but you're right on the money here.
@@bbb462cid And don't forget Albert King.
Mance Lipscomb
Albert King was not a texan and blind lemon Jefferson was born in 1890 and died in 1929 before most blues players people know were even born.
Three coolest dudes. RIP Dusty Hill. The only guys with no beard is the drummer, and his name is Frank Beard. They did it in Nashville with Brook and Dunst, it was legendary.
its amazing the sound they make with just three guys. guitar, bass, and drums
Blues boogie at its very finest. This and 'Tush' are my two faves.
You should definitely react to more of their music
One of my favorites has been and will always be "Sharp Dressed Man"
add 1 more vote.
Yes, thirty seconds of Lyrics followed by three to five minutes of Guitar Solo, depending on their mood, and it's one of their most iconic songs.
Sadly Dusty Hill, the other guitarist, passed away in July of 2021, he was replaced in the group by their long-time guitar tech Elwood Francis
The cap Billy wears is called a Dayshaloo Nudu, a popular hat warn by the Bamileke tribe of Cameroon. He got it some years ago while in Vienna, during which he met the Tribal Chief of the Bamileke, and the two ended up trading hats, Billy got the Nudu which he's worn ever since, and the Chief got his genuine Texas Stetson.
Dusty was the bass player. I'm sure you knew that. RIP Dusty.
I love seeing a young women that can appreciate good music that was before her time and not just all the crap of today. And your facial expressions werewow.
Amen to that - girl had her 'stank face' on!
never heard this version before, they play off eachother so well. that was fun!
One of my favorits bluesrock song, i have saw zz top live in switzerland, 40years ago ❤😊❤nobody plays the guitar like gibbons...has you listen stevie ray vaughen?
One of the most recognizable and perfect guitar riffs of all times... and one hell of a highway driving song!
Undoubtedly inspired by the great John Lee Hooker’s Boogie Chillen.
Just saw ZZTOP in Colorado USA late 2022, they were lotta fun N Rocked for 2hours .
Badass Musicians
I listened to zz Top as a kid growing up in the south and always enjoyed their music . I gotta tell ya tho your reactions are the best there is out there in youtube world . And your smile keeps me coming back also .. Thanks Britt , have yourself a great evening ..
This guitar lick, and the way it picks up speed, is one of my favorite things ever. Great song for leaving work on a Friday. And yes, it's about what you think it's about. Most songs are ;-)
It definitely shows when a band loves what they do to the point that they start vibing and seamlessly slipping from one song to another without pause
I used to go skiing with that song blasting through my Walkman, yes, my Walkman. It has the exceptional effect of increasing your skiing performance and make you do things you may not otherwise do. haha.
I grew up listening to these guys. My mom was a huge fan. Their songs are iconic. You should definitely listen to more of them.
But stay 1980 and earlier at least for the first few songs.
Great band. You should see them live. You got it. It's about what you think.
One of my favorite bands ever.
Your smile is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Love your channel.
These guys have been having fun for decades just doing what they love to do. Seen them in concert and they always killed it. People who don't know the band would never guess it's just three guys. RIP Dusty
One spring night in 1974 after doing a gig in San Antonio, the band stopped in unexpectedly to Cheatham Street Warehouse in San Marcos for funsies(actually they knew owner Kent Finlay). Willie, Waylon, Alvin Crow, and so many more music legends came there to play in Kent's place. That was the first time I ever saw them in person.....up close and personal. They were driving a Buick Riviera with a moon roof, and some hottie chick was throwing $20's out of the moon roof as they drove up by the front entry. The license plate said ZZTOP. My brother and I and a friend were standing on the front porch and saw what was going on. We went out into the parking lot and grabbed up a total of $160 in twenties between us....that was alot of money back then. We were all in college and broke, so this was like a prayer answered from Heaven. I was a soph. at that time and what a time it was to be alive!! They did not play at Cheatham Street that night......it was already close to closing time (2 a.m.) but the place was still at least half full. This is a true story. I also used to drink beers with Willie Nelson there and George Strait. George was only a couple of yrs older than me and had the Hole in the Wall band in those years. Steve in Texas.....forever.
Yep, it's DEFINITELY what you're thinkin' about!🤣 The famous Chicken Ranch.. (i.e. Best Little Whorehouse in Texas) ZZ Top is still one of the icons of the rock world, and as a 3 piece band, have put out some of the most memorable tracks in rock history!!🎵🎶 🤘😎🤘
ZZ Top and this song helped put MTV on the map back in the day. Yes ZZ Top was huge on MTV in the 80's. They still put on a great concert.
Great reaction. Channel's growing so fast because you're good at it.
I had the pleasure of seeing zz top 5 times in one year(1973) as they would be the opening band for the big bands touring coming through Nashville, TN. Got to see some great bands back then but zz top was a favorite and always rocked it out.
Absolute LEGENDS! Have heard them multiple times.... unreal talent plus 40+ years together
A movie was made about the place they are singing about in 1982. Starring Burt Reynolds and Dolly Parton. The movie was called The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas
One of my favorite groups back in the day, so many people have covered this song through the years!
the sheer range of styles and music, comedy et al and your reactions truly make and give joy to the us all. you young lady are ready for prime time.
A Tribe leader in Cameroon was admiring Billy's cowboy hat. Through the interpreter, he worked out a trade: the Chiefs hat, for his. The name of the band came from two legendary musicians. Z.Z. Hill and BB king. Billy didn't want to call the band ZZ King. After thinking about it, he decided on ZZ top because King was at the top of his game musically.
Am loving the guitar here. I've listened to La Grange many times but not this version, this was cool.
We played this in a band in high school during an assembly. Along with feel like makin love and one by one the teachers got up and left.We we're a little sheltered and didn't realize what the songs really meant
ZZ Top was my favorite band, growing up in the 80's. They have a lot of iconic hits. They've been rocking for decades. This song was released the year I was born, 1973. I still like the original best.
the studio version is perfection 👍🏻
I second that!
ZZ TOP in my opinion the greatest rock band of all times. Same three guys from the start. Now unfortunately we lost the great Dusty Hill. He played base in this video you're watching. Billy Gibbons, master guitar player. Frank Beard (clean shaven) drummer like no other.
Look up the music video's they did in the 80's. Then you will understand there almost cult following.
For a couple of years (1973-75?), they might have been the best band in the world. Anything from ‘Tres Hombres’ (like this song, “Waitin’ For The Bus/ Jesus Just Left Chicago”, “Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers”, “Move Me On Down the Line”), … ‘Fandango’ (“Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings”, “Blue Jean Blues”, “Heard It On The X”, “Tush”), … or “Just Got Paid” is a good introduction. Thanks!
LOVE ZZ TOP!!! And this is one of my top 10 ever!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yes its about a brothel. You need to explore the ZZ Top rabit hole. You gotta check out their songs Tush. Tube Snake Boogie, Just Got Paid, Jesus just Left Chicago, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Cheap Sunglasses, Bad Girl, Mexican Blackbird although you may want to do that one private, I don't think UA-cam will allow that reaction. This band has been rolling out hits since the 1960 and until the bass player died in 2022 they were all the three original band members. One of the top five Rock and roll/Blues bands of all time.
Don't forget Pearl Necklace if we are traveling down the road of in your face behind your back songs.
So glad you got to experience my favorite band. And yes, Billy is one cool cat. Behind those sunglasses are the kindest, gentlest blue eyes you can imagine. He is a true southern gentleman. If you want to really enjoy some red hot ZZ Top guitar playing, check out "Just Got Paid". An oldie but you can easily find video of them playing it live in concert. Billy's slide guitar work in that one is epic. Thanks for your vid--I enjoy seeing what people who've never heard or seen ZZ Top before react to. I see that many others have answered "yes", that song is about what you think it is. If nobody told you the whole story about his hat (aka the nudu hat, the plant on his head, etc.) let me know and I'll tell the story. Short version: he got it from an African tribal chief, in trade.
I highly recommend listening to the original studio tracks when checking out a new band. It sets a good baseline and they're the versions people most identify with, for the most part.
I would definitely get my smoker fired up if I knew ZZ Top was dropping by for dinner. Smoked brisket and Rock 'N Roll, baby!
ZZ Top LIVE is the GREATEST! RIP Dusty
Great to see your pure surprise and joy while listening to the coolest American band of the 1980s. Great reaction!
And the 70's
The place this song is about is also the place in the movie THE BEST LITTLE WH*RE HOUSE IN TEXAS that DOLLY PARTON starred in.. needless to say it is not meant for innocent eyes.
Basically lifted from John Lee Hooker, but a great steal. Great band.
Back in the 70’s most of us didn’t listen to the lyrics, just the soundscape. Love this song!
A Haw Haw Haw....
I know. I think in a big way that was because many or most of us didn't have enough money for stereo gear good enough to hear a lot of the vocals.
I was able to see then in Amarillo, Tx in early 1974 and they were clean shaven! Sugerloaf played before them and were awesome too!
Yeah, it's about what you think it's about! 🙂 The hook for "La Grange" came from John Lee Hooker's "Boom, Boom, Boom" - ua-cam.com/video/K096sx5whTE/v-deo.html
Yep, I instantly recognized it when I heard it. Paying homage to a pioneer in electric blues...
I first saw them in Statesboro, GA in 1973. I could watch Britt's reactions forever and ever.
Wonderfull ! This live version sounds so Fantastic Dirty ! I love it !
Many years ago when I was England staying at a pub with rooms, they were playing music on a loop and ZZ TOP kept coming around . I thought, here I am from Dallas and had to come to England to hear ZZ TOP.
Saw them 5 times. First time 1975 forth worth TX. It was the 76 world tour. Saw them with the rolling stones 1981. Dallas cotton bowl.
The hat was a gift from the leader of Cameroon in Africa. He was there as a guest on a diplomatic visit. He traded a ten gallon hat from Texas for it. The hat is called a Bamileke. He immediately fell in love with it. He has since collected a lot of African folk art.
"Is this song what I think it's about?" Yup!! Welcome to ZZ Top!! GREAT reaction, and yes, they are Legend!! Two guys with beards and the other one named ... wait for it ... Frank Beard. What's not to love!!
One of my favorite ZZ Top songs. LEGENDS!
I was at a concert in Little Rock years ago in my “youts” ha ha. They were playing this song and the speakers started smoking- yes literally. They finished the song and brought in a new speaker for the one that was melting down. Awesomeness!
Those guys will blow your mind!
that was 3 masters of music that could extend any song for ever long they want. Its like they could read each others minds.
ZZTOP - papers we used back in the day to roll blunts. Two different brands: Tops and Zig Zags. And yes... the song is what you think it's about. The riff is from an old blues song by John Lee Hooker in "Boogie Chillen'"... same riff used by the Stones' song "Shake your hips" from Exile on Main Street.
Seen them about four or five times at the Cow Palace! ... long before MTV.
Tickets were only $10 back then! Awesome times to be a youngster at 23 years old!
It was always great when after about an hour and a half of wailing, they took a break and came back out always with, "Now it's time for the second half!"
They NEVER disappointed!
I'm diggin' you diggin' them, girl. Great reaction, you are awesome!
Saw them a long time ago 1980. The little Ole band from Texas. Great concert!! I feel bad for the ppl next to us they probably had the munchies after the concert, lol
You played one of my favorite bands. And for that, plus the fact you’re adorable, I subscribed. Thanks for what you do.
That "Little Ole Band From Texas" is a great blues band, and they know how to rock it.
I Live in Texas........met a lot of people that have known Billy Gibbons..... they all talk about how real cool and nice he is.. never a bad word
Hey beautyfull woman!!! Hahaha. Love them, don't know if they're so good or not. But I know that they're one of a kind. They're unique. Good reaction. Greettings from Argentina
This song is about a brothel, which is a house of ill repute, that existed in LaGrange Texas from 1905 to 1973. So although I can't read your mind pretty sure that what you were thinking the song was about was probably pretty close to what it was really about.
I saw them in Hawaii when I was in the Army in 1978.
They absolutely owned that crowd and had them wrapped around their little fingers. They were absolutely amazing. Fandango remains my favorite album and Mellow Down Easy remains one of the best live party songs of all time.
I had the privilege of seeing Billy Gibbons(ZZ Top) live at Antone's in Austin, Tx in December...legend!
That little band from Texas!!! You've been hitting hard lately nothing but love from West Big TX!!!
The hat is known as a nudu, or Bamileke beanie, Billy Gibbons' traded his Stetson 10-gallon to the leader of the Bamileke tribe for it in Cameroon during a break while on tour with ZZ Top.
In regards to the hat, If memory serves me correctly, Billy Gibbons was in Africa or somehow met the leader/king of an African tribe. Gibbons had on a 10 gallon cowboy hat & the tribal leader liked it, so they traded each other hats. The African hat has been part of his style for several decades at this point.
I saw them in concert followed Lynard Skinner, i was close to a huge amp; i couldnt hear good for 2 days. Great show!!!
You were talking about his hat. I was reading an article some years ago but I think I remember him getting that hat as a gift while in Africa on the trail for rare guitars.
ZZ Top was probably the first rock band I loved.
Yes young lady, this is exactly what you think this is about and what a lovely "reaction" ... love it. I'm an old guy so was around when they started over in Dallas. TX. And when they'd come to Fort Worth for live shows, they'd stay across the street from me in an abandoned Mansion ... driving their early 60's baby blue Ford Econoline Van ... spray painted with "ZZ Top" on the sides freehand. LOL Billy Gibbons is considered in the top 5 guitarists ever ... up there with Hendrix, Clapton, Van Halen ...
Love that lil ol band from Texas! 🎸🎸💙🎸🎸
Those guys are as real as it gets. I partied with them in the 80s. the top of a Hilton was rocking with women, and they always shared.
Saw them at Austin Texas Stadium in the 70’s. They made the album “Fandango” from that concert. Inside album sleeve has aerial photo of the stadium to include the parking lot where I can see my car parked (a bright yellow Lotus - easy to notice).
One of my favorite songs, and yes it's exactly about what you think it's about. they're jam it check out the climax!!! Brown shuger
The best straight-ahead rock and roll band in the world. At least from where I'm sitting.
