Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater's pedal pusher, demos the BOSS RE-20 which nails that "warm" tape-saturated echo effect. This pedal emulates the classic Roland RE-201 Space Echo - sounds great in your guitar rig, equally sweet for keyboards.

This guy is a great salesman, in the sense that he truly digs what he's selling.
Great video.
I'm trying to understand why this guy has like 4 feet of table space between him and the synth.
HAHAHAHHAHAHAA
BECAUSE HE'S AMERICAN
Maybe Sweetwater were also trying to sell some of those tables. "I like the look of the pedal, but man!! get a load of that big table! I'm gonna get me one of them."
It's because the pedal gives you so much space.
Sport cabel
For those who are wondering; YES, the music between 0:20-0:38 is the "space intro" from the song Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller.
Great pedal...loved the Steve Miller riff.
Lovely, excellent done!
wow this synth sounds unbelievable!
Just bought this pedal secondhand online... First thing to do when I get it: "HEY RASTAMAN"
thanks for demonstrating vocals!
Great demo
great review!
Cool Stuff Dan !!!!!
Really good demo...
thank you, just bought one
god that has gotta be one of the coolest pedals ever
That's awesome!
I bought mine after watching your clip,I always wanted the 201,I've got my moog running thru it, then tru a boo instruments tremolo boutique pedal and a boss flanger rf10, very nice, thanks
such a gem this video x)
Definitely a sick pedal.
SOLD!
mine is on the way via fedex!! YAY!!!!
Now I gotta buy a Moog so I can run my voice through the RE-20!
Or a Radial EXTC-SA Reamp.
@@JulioBergo83 I ordered a subsequent but bought this pedal first ;))
Hopefully you do a new one for the RE 202.. :)
@dionreload
This is a digital emulation (reproduction) of an old tape echo machine. It produces different fading echoes and one type of spring reverb. No, it's not a loop pedal. If you're looking for one, you should look for RC-20 or RC-2 pedals also from Boss.
"HEY RASTAMAN!"
@ACDCwarmachine Keyboards of a certain vintage (like the Minimoog) don't have built in effects. It wasn't until the mid to late 80's when synths had echo/chorus/reverb effects of any note. They mostly do now of course.
@Foreignsik
thanks
@dionreload
I'm not exactly sure what you mean but I think the answer might be at 2:33.
@HammondB200 You can set the input level.
I used to use the original Roland Place echo on my Moog synth solos. It was deep, rich, and awesome. It made Rick Wakeman solos (like on Journey to the Centre of the Earth, etc) sound even better than when Wakeman played them himself. Delighted to see Roland has stepped up and produced this device, and very grateful to Sweetwater and Daniel Fisher for making this great demo.
Hi airmiami,
The DD-20 has an Analog mode as well as a "Tape" mode.
But while the RE-20 emulates the Space Echo's "fixed head" tape delay, the DD-20's Tape mode emulates a certain famous "moving head" tape delay. (Look it up ;-)
The BOSS RE-20 Space Echo ..... what any Max Headroom fan needs! Seriously though I love this pedal .... I love the tape echo sound but a real one would be far too expensive! This one is a bit costly for a pedal but at the same time if you really like this thing, it's not really that costly!
In a Steve miller band live performance Steve Miller asks guitarist before guitar solo "you got your echoplex?!" Back when echoplex was tape. Tape has such a warm layered sound. Boss Roland Space Echo is do great at recapturing the tape sound digitally. Man I miss the sound of analog.
I have one of these, but the DD-20 is on my mind now, as it has a reverse delay sound that I need. Anyone know if the DD-20 is as warm and vintage sounding as this?
@ 0:40 could you do that but than faster whit a loop pedal??? i neeeed to know this thx
The sound at the very beginning sounds a bit like the echo-drenched synth riffs in the Steve Miller Band song "The Window" as well as the intro to the song "Fly Like An Eagle"..
MrCamelneck was looking for this comment xD I think it sounded exactly like the intro for fly like an eagle!
HEY RASTAMAN!!!
FYAH PERFORMANCE!!
bless up the salsmen dem..
the vocal effects are like sigue sigue sputnik
hahaha you're right!
@verve92 Actually, it's a Voyager Old School, which was cheaper (but no longer available).

Ah, so that's how Steve Miller did it ! Still sounds great 40 yrs later !
how did you plug in the mic to the pedal? also what did you plug the pedal into to make its sound so crisp for the video? an amp? or is there a way to connect it straight to the computer? thanks
Hi Austin, to keep things flowing (I try to shoot my videos in one shot) I fed the microphone into the Audio In of the Voyager, which was already plugged into the RE-20. That way, all I had to do was turn up the Ext. In Volume on the Voyager. The pedal went directly into the Roland amp, which was set to a flat EQ and no effects. This was picked up by the stereo mic on the ZOOM camera. Sorry, there are no USB Audio connections on the RE-20. Thanks for watching!
Hi, can I use a Moog ep-3 expression pedal with the RE-20? thank you!
Hi lifeonastrings, that should work just fine. The primary difference on that pedal is that it has a knob on the side to set the Maximum Level, whereas other pedals have a knob to set the Minimum Level. Thanks for watching!
Thank you!!
no no i was just wondering if you could do that sound with using a loop pedal
Wait, the Moog is at line-level... Why isn't the RE-20 distorting?
@AlainHubert that isnt a loop pedal ? thats not what i wanted to no but thx
Does bypass cut tail of reverb/delay or leave it so you can play on top of it?
Hi MrDysio, the RE-20 is always in "tails" mode such that the effect will fade away when you Bypass it, and you can play over the top of that (dry). Thanks for watching!
at second 40 that's where my mix tape is about to drop
so wait is this digital and analog? He said that the RE-20 has a bucket brigade chip in it? Or is it emulating a BBD?
@AVasocc Moog Voyager a steal at $3000 a pop!
what kind of moog is that?
which synth is that exactly ? can't find it on Moog's current product site.
Hi FICKFEHLER. That was the limited edition Moog Voyager Old School. No screen, no presets. Thanks for watching!
Hey rasta man why is your moog so far away from you.
Great pedal..gonna have to get one now......
Hi D Charger, back in 2009 we used a single, hand-held ZOOM camera for this video. I wanted the stereo output of the Roland amp to face the stereo mic, and yet be in a position so I could hear it clearly. I also needed the RE-20 to be close to my hands yet have everything in the shot at once. Since it wan't a Moog demo, I didn't mind it being farther away for the few times I needed it. Thanks for watching!
is it analog or digital?
5:06
I'm getting one just so I can say that into it
I hallucinated listening to this without taking anything.
Expression pedal does 4 things, not 3. The 4th thing is Echo Level. Did you need a separate preamp on your mic?
Hi Daniel. I used the preamp on the Ext. Input of the Moog Voyager Old School. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Is it worth buying if I already own a moogerfooger mf-104m?
Hi Tom. The key thing about the Space Echo, and the modern RE-20, is the unique tonal imprint it gives to everything that echoes through it. So, even though I have a closet wall shelf covered in delay pedals (including an MF-104m SD), I wouldn't give up my RE-20.
@@sweetwater Thanks for the quick reply. I think I'm going to definitely check it out then.
message for sweetwater can you just plug a roland drum machine into it the use the outputs on the re20 straight into a mtr (multitrack recorder)
Yes, you can JOHNNY BAGWASH!
thanks for reply sweetwater
@AVascocc not sure most likely a moog
nice video video video video video video
ask from technicians of Hawkwind for a good demo :)
sounds like the background music from the original star trek TV series.
can't separate the two units on this demo
Hi nblfyb,
That's a Moog Voyager "Old School". No MIDI, no presets. It's all about the knobs!
0:40 damn
Indeed! Thanks for watching!
EEEEY RASTAMAN

He does. But he's attending private therapy in an attempt to reduce the number of times he says it in public.
